was quite good, with the 'voices' just right. but what the flaming hell are you on about about the cover? It's a fine cover, Optimous. Sheesh, if you're going to go questing for SOMEthing to gripe about, how about the less-than-futuristic truck design on an inner world where things should be spiffier?

uh, it's clearly set *before* the movie Serenity (Walsh is clearly alive). Indeed, it appears to be set before the last Serenity comics(c.f. Book and Inara are still on board).

Otherwise, good review. BETTER DAYS #1 is a solid start.

Originally my review was about 1000 words, but you know what, we write these reviews so the Talkback folks will enjoy them, so I scaled back my rant trying to be cognoscente of past feedback

My problem is less with the actual art and more specifically with the characterization, specifically Captain Reynolds.

The grin on the man’s face look like it stems from blunt head trauma or a learning disability. Reynolds is the type of guy you would walk up to in a bar. He is a man hardened by a lifetime of combat. He is a man of grand gestures and extremes. He is not a man that would ever pose like a fucking Sears underwear model with a dopey shit eating grin on his face, no matter how much money he fell into.

Even the main artist agrees, when they open the case at the end, does he give a grin? No. He’s already thinking ahead to the repercussions of this gross amount of mad duckets they now have.

The art was good, although the photo-realism of the faces immediately made my mind think of the stacks and stacks of books that sat under my parent’s coffee table with Fabio’s face plastered across them.

Just after eeing all three episodes,. If the writing continues in its presnt vein then we might have the best animated comic book adaptation since the Batman series in the late 90's. I love how they build upon the continuity ( are you listening chief editor Joe?) and making Peter/spidey struggle with their problems. One question though , why cant the animators get a proper feel for Spideys body language and movement. If computer gmes programmers can do it, then why not the animation house?

UNLESS you happen to have a SERIOUS love of Spider-Man period. I am an animation afficionado and I check out EVERY new animated show that premieres in the US. Unless you've got some serious love of Spidey rattlin' around (I don't, he's all right but Superman will always be cooler in my book. Hell Cyclops of the X-Men is cooler in my book) this show will suck the life out of you for every SECOND you watch it. As Jinxo said the theme song is downright fucking AWFUL and honestly, the stories and dialogue aren't much better ( I actually forced my self to watch the first 3 eps in one sitting to make sure it was as bad as it first seemed. It was.) The animation style is a weird mutant love child of anime and cartoon stylings that gives NOTHING new (or even interesting) to the concept of character design. The non-Spidey portions of the episodes literally reek of a ham-handed attempt for the target audience to relate (Hey kids! Pete's JUST like you 'cept for the whole cool superpowers-n-bad-guys-to-figh t stuff!!)to the main character. Don't get me started on the strangely inconsistent frame rates throughout either. All in all it's piss poor attempt to suck yet more advertising revenue out Marvel' 2nd moste over-exposed character (Wolverine taking the top spot for YEARS now) that does NOTHING but add yet another lame-ass and clunky 're-interpretation' of the Spider-Man mythos. Grade F for fucked.

Ok since you've decided to take the snarky tack, I'll return the favor: Maybe you ought to take a remedial english course so you can comprehend the words "literally reek of a ham-handed attempt" and what they actually mean in relation to the sentence structure as a whole. I wasn't saying JACK SHIT about alter egos and their part in superheroic stories dumbass, I was criticizing THIS SHOW'S piss-poor usage of said plot device. Next time try actually comprehending what someone is sayiing before you decide to 'school' them, buttmunch.

Yeah, I've sunk to name calling. Get over it ya pansy ass, this is what happens when you fuck with someone running on 3 hours of sleep from having to deal with Methed out neighbors and the cops, 'kay? 'kay.

You named three specific things that you didn't like about the new show. 1 - The art. 2 - The non-Spidey portions. 3 - Framerates. And you didn't go into any detail about WHY the non-Spidey portions were bad. Therefore, it's implied that the mere existence of these is what you didn't like. This has nothing to do with my reading comprehension. It has everything to do with your writing skills. They need improvement. Here's a tip, a television show can't "literally reek."

Apparently you need some vocabulary work as well because it's quite apparent that the 'euphemism' isn't part of YOURS. Also, you 2nd post directed to me only reinforces my point about you needing some actual reading comprehension skills because the very sentence where I address the non-spidey portions is also where I say exactly what annoys me about them. Now that I think about it, what grade are you in again? 5th? 6th?

Eeuphemism. N.

1. the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt.

In this instance, the euphemism "literally reeked" was substituted in place of "Sucked shit-covered donkey balls" if you will.

D'oh! There were cameos? Sadly I am lacking in Gargoyle geek knowledge. And crossover stuff is supposed to be my thing. the shame, the shame...

But what is with the bashing? I mean, I didn't come out and throw love alll over the show. I was osrt of middle of the road. I DO like the writing. Again, compared to the Spidey I grew up with they are putting an impressive amount of advanced thought into what they're doing. But it isn't Batman The Animated Series by any stretch. The art isn't a crime butI'm not sure the style is a match for the material and that's a problem.

And actually glad you brought up weird video. Something I forgot about that WAS incredibly strange. The second episode in? I swear they accidentally gave the video an animorphic format. Everything was just stretched and thin. I adjusted my TV to stretch it to wide screen andsuddenly it looked perfect. I thought maybe it was just a quirk of the animation, like maybe it actually could look okay either way. But then I tried it with other episodes and, nope, just that one episode hit the air screwy. Very odd.

I mean, (FOR ME) the show was flatter than it's color pallette (and what was up with that anyway? so many technical aspects of the show just seemed so half-assed y'know?). I think the spirit of my frustration is fueled by how much I WAS looking forward to the show (Like many I LOVED the 90's Fox Kids show and loathed everything they'd done since ESPECIALLY that MTV atrocity) and was severely let down by what I watched in those 3 episodes. And like I said, Spider-man is somewhere in the mid-range for coolness so unless either the story (to cite the 90's show for example) OR the animation (which, let's face it has pretty much sucked for damn near every american super-hero show) draws me in, then it's a major 'meh' for me. (well, and I may be channeling some rage at the 'mis-fired for much of season 1 and cancelled with season 2' mess that is the LoSH 'toon)

Anyone else feel the opening titles are a throwback to the old 60s show, a retro homage?
