The Aptera car
by tough_times
Mar 18th, 2008
02:31:07 AM
since its set in the future, perhaps the Aptera is like the hippie VW bug of the future. All these profs are driving these old classics around looking cool, scoring with their students.
Because if its not and that car is in the Star Trek movie posing as a future car, my suspension of disbelief will be ruined and I won't be able to enjoy the rest of the movie. C'mon JJ don't get lazy with us now. We are Star Trek nerds. We are into technology. Don't bust out present day crap and try to peddle it as "future" car. Seriously, we will destroy you.

Well just color me nerd, because I just realized that car will be out before the movie. And everyone (if they haven't already) will know about it. It will be like someone driving a '08 Mustang or a Chevy Suburban across the Starfleet campus. I mean C'MON! I hope they cover it with CGI or something. Seriously, what a short-sighted thing to put in this movie.
about the arrowhead
by slkboxrman
Mar 18th, 2008
02:40:01 AM
if this movie is indeed a prequel...the arrowhead symbol would ONLY be the enterprise symbol..anyone that watched the original series and knows any star trek history knows every ship had its own insignia....they adopted the enterprises arrowhead symbol because of enterprises historic missions and significance to starfleet.

Don't the graysuits look like young Admiral Ozzels?

I'm hoping we get a car-chase scene in the parking garage using that hybrid car. Spock can nerve-pinch the driver while Kirk slides across the hood, commandeers the car, and eludes those drunken Klingon thugs from Kappa Kappa Jajvam.

This feels like a viral campaign...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Mar 18th, 2008
02:58:40 AM
The cynic in me says these were purposely leaked to the internet. Otherwise, Paramount would have demanded that they be taken down by now. Notice that there are possible clues for us to pick at and obsess over: The license plate on the futuristic car and the banners hanging from the light poles. This all smells like something that the studio WANTED us to see.
@skywalkerfamily: I thought a V remake, too...
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Mar 18th, 2008
03:07:40 AM
The gray uniformed people look quite a lot like Imperial officers from Star Wars. And the air car looks quite a lot like an updated version of the Visitor shuttle. But, alas, the familiar Starfleet arrowhead emblem on the banners strongly over rides the possibility that this is a V remake. (Now if the banners had the Visitor Nazi-like emblem, that would totally seal the deal.)

As for the continuity regarding the arrowhead (which was originally designated for the Enterprise NCC-1701), perhaps these extras are, in fact, the first crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701. In other words, what we are seeing here is what will be a commencement ceremony for the NCC-1701 crew. I'm willing to give JJ Abrams the benefit of the doubt that he is respecting the basics of Trek continuity here.

Establish and crowd shots
by Jim Jam Bongs
Mar 18th, 2008
03:25:50 AM
I can confirm that this was second unit work done for crowd and establishing shots. This is for a commencement event for the first crew of the Enterprise. The red people are the ship's crew, and the grey people are the ones who built the Enterprise. It's some kind of graduation ceremony where the ship is symbolically handed over from the builders to its first crew. The futuristic car will be cloned and appear as several parked flying cars surrounding the area -- they moved it from one spot, filmed the crowd, then moved the crowd and car to other spots, repeat. This was second unit work. I know this because I have a fellow professional colleague who was there, so that's all I can say. I do think that Bad Robot "leaked" this to AICN on purpose. It's their standard MO for teasing the Internet community.
Maybe the car ain't in the film at all.

Star Trek didn't need a reboot....BUT
by The Biomind
Mar 18th, 2008
04:21:57 AM
Star Trek doesn't need a reboot, revamp or whatever. But it needs good stories and movies that are not treated like tv episodes. The last two TNG movies simply weren't good movies - that's the problem. People are not tired of Star Trek. But they are tired of Data discovering his emotions AGAIN for the 100th time. And nobody wants second rate villains when after First Contact everybody wanted to see a Borg aramada on the silver screen. Plus, the last movie had ridiculously badly staged action scenes. Remember how silly it looked, when Worf landed on his stomach while firing a phaser rifle? Jeez. And the last tv series Enterprise went off the air because Archer and his colleagues were the most wooden and boring people whoe ever traveled through space. It also wasn't necessary in the last movies to hold on to characters like boring Geordi, while they should have better used somebody like Janeway, Seven or Quark. Star Trek has so many characters, and nobody over at Paramount ever realized it.

the writers are fishy. The director made a godawfully expensive first feature that looked like a glorified TV pilot, the cast is controversial to say the least... And the Trek franchise doesn't interest the mass audiance anymore, just the fans. Massive bomb in the making, Stardate: May '09.

Giant sfx bluescreens with dot patterns in background. Some special effects are being planned! And as someone who watched classic Trek when it was first broadcast, sure I'm a bit iffy on this whole recasting reboot, but unless some one is going to rejuvinate the cast like in the Tales of the Darkside episode, "Distant Signals", then this is how to go. And about the ONLY person I would trust to do this is JJ Abrams. Don't let us down JJ!

If the red and dull gray are the students at SF Academy, where are the professors in the crowd? I guess they'll be added with the blue screen.

What? No bumperstickers for the Rocket Car?

"Spock Happens"

"Ass, Grass, or Kobayashi Maru: Nobody rides for free"

"Don't blame me, I voted for Chelsea"

"No blood for dilithium"

"You can pry my phaser from my cold dead hand"

"Caution - This vehicle stops for tribbles"

Kudos for remembering "Distant Signals". That was a great 30 minutes of syndicated television, made all the betterer by the inclusion of the great Darren McGavin. And I'm sure the bluescreens in the pics are to show the GIGANTIC STARSHIP ENTERPRISE that's been BUILT ON THE GROUND, because apparently somebody thought it was a cute idea to have an enormous, top-heavy warp driven starship built on the ground and not someplace more practical like, oh I dunno, SPACE.

The Good News & The Bad News

The Good news - if this relaunch turns out to be an utter disaster, it should finally put a stake through the STAR TREK heart.

The Bad news - if this relaunch comes off as even remotely servicable (with a modest B.O.), then it will force this tired, overwrought franchise to limp on as yet another incarnation that continues to water down its past glories.

Damn.

The level of nerditry present every time the words Star and Trek come up in the headline. I'm a huge fanboy as well, so I can understand the level of obsession that comes with things. But oh my God...."this picture here clearly violates the canon established in episode 2, season 1, scene 24 frame number 24:45 that shows that'....it's just awesome. I've had my moments similar, so I'm not exactly innocent when it comes to this myself, but it's still funny.

...back to Star Trek, I dunno. The commencement ceremony is a good save, because indeed, the insignia is wrong otherwise. Trekkies are notoriously sensitive to minutiae, and they don't forgive the way Star Wars fans do. Jeez, SW fans really save Lucas' ass a LOT. I like both franchises, SW a little more, but I'm all for going back to TOS Trek, even with new people...just not sure about this cast. I was all for Damon and Sinise as Kirk and McCoy. Dunno about Pathfinder being Bones...

...like that lame-@$$ Deep Space Nine episode. Yeah let's make the uniforms for space explorers miniskirts as if that would make sense... why? Because that's what they had on classic Trek forty years ago. Let's have the Enterprise built in Area 51... why? Because Area 51 is "edgy". Uh, no... Area 51 was "edgy" in 1993! Well, one plus to this abortion will be that it'll kill Trek forever... at last.
