the animated Hellboy kicks ass. Actually, Hellboy is the only Dark Horse property that has made it to the screen unscathed. Let's hope for an R-rated animated Goon movie.

30 Days of Night had nothing to do with Dark Horse
by Sledge Hammer
Mar 17th, 2008
07:42:35 AM
...it was published by IDW, as young mr Grayson pointed out above. And technically neither did they have anything to do with Alien vs Predator, as Fox already owned both those properties and the full rights to do whatever the hell they wanted with them, and merely licensed them out to Dark Horse for their various comics.

You know it's coming - Universal Studios Orlando and Hollywood will probably announce new rides based on Dark Horse movies. Ride the "300" roller coaster where you and other Spartan riders take on Xerxes. Or battle supernatural creatures with your vehicles ray gun and score the most points on "Hell Boy - The Ride".
You know what they should adapt?

Do they still handle the Aliens and Predator properties? I wasn't really into their original stuff but I did enjoy their movie tie ins like the Aforementioned Aliens and Predator, Robocop, and of course Star Wars.

You would of course have to make the Hunter Rose story first, but Warchild would make an awesome second or third Grendel movie. I can totally envision a Grendel movie... maybe I should send Matt Wagner a script...

Is apparently the shit. If one really believes Dark Horse had nothing to do with 30 Days of Night, I'd happily enjoy the same level of involvement so I could roll nekked in the mounds and mounds of Benjamins such non-involvement generates.

I've been in Mike Richardson's office a few times. That's the shit too. I saw the mask from The Mask, all manner of other signature movie props and enough original comic art from across the spectrum of the medium that Linda Tripp advised I put my skivvies in a safe deposit box, just in case.

Sometimes they make good stuff. A lot of the time they just cash in on movie and TV licenses and pound a property into the ground. I absolutely hate what they did with Predator, Aliens, Star Wars, and a few others...

They took canon and fucked it with a giant, bladed strap-on.

Sherlock Holmes II
by ZeroCorpse
Mar 17th, 2008
01:24:28 PM
What ever possessed you to make yourself the sequel to one of my old user names on AICN? Yes, I, ZeroCorpse, was Sherlock Holmes during a period when Moriarty was in maximum bannanation mode (get it? I was mad at Moriarty, so . . .), and I stayed that way for a while until Doc Pazuzu offered to re-integrate my two personas and return me to AICN glory and legend.

So I'm kind of curious why you would come along and pick that name (common enough) but then see that it was taken, and so decide, "Well, hrm, I guess I'll just slap a "II" at the end of it, so as not to be confused with the other guy who chose this name."

Or did you just pick "Sherlock Holmes II" straight-up, and never knew there was another on here? I could see that, I suppose.

Just curious. We don't see a lot of "sequel" names or names with numbers popped on the ends of them around here-- That's kinda AOL's thing.

And yes, I've been on AICN entirely too long. I'm an old-timer, now.

Dark Horse Aliens Comics

I love the Alien movies and I think Dark Horse has done a really good job managing the property. Most Aliens comics are actually pretty faithful to the original themes. I have been re-reading my Aliens comics collection recently and I'd say two out of three Aliens comic series are well worth reading if you like the property.

Little hard to fuck up Predator canon. There wasn't really much there to fuck up in the first place: alien hunter who loves to pursue prey on alien planets. How do you fuck that up? In my opinion, casting Danny Glover in Predator II fucked up canon more than Dark Horse ever could. Ol' Arnold gets his ass royally beat the fuck up by the Predator yet Danny Glover can go toe-to-toe with it? Fuck that continuity. I'd rather watch an hour and a half of Gary Busey doing blow with Bill Paxton screaming "Let's Dance" then turn my brain off for another Danny Glover action romp.
Predator 2

If you haven't seen it in a long time, give it a try. I watched it on DVD with a buddy a while ago. We were both really impressed with how things built and the solid 40 minutes of action at the end. Danny Glover never goes to to toe with the thing the way Arnold did though. He's mostly just pursuing it, nearby and scared shitless when it's killing people.

What I meant was I was way more disappointed when I watched Predator 2 for the first time. Like most people I thought Danny Glover could not stack up to Arnold Schwarzenegger. That is flawed thinking. These movies are about the creature, the hunt. Their prey and the surrounding characters can be many different things, they don't all need to be Rambo special forces types.

The comic was never all that great. When it came out in 1993 or 1994 I actually thought it was an improvement on the comic book and one of JCVD's few watchable movies.

Star Wars Legacy in particular has been getting great reviews, and even popped up on Wizard's Top 5 picks. One of the few non-Whedon media spin-off comics to rank decently within the top 100 selling comics each month. Knights of the Old Republic has been pretty solid too in both quality and sales. The first Dark Times arc had some of the best artwork you will ever see in any comic; it's only Rebellion that's comparatively weaker, but even that had a solid second arc.

Legacy is great, too. I just get the trade paperbacks. I wish Dark Horse could get the Galactica license because the people who do it now are terrible.

Star Wars...bah!!!

After Mass Effect, Star Wars is pretty much dead to me. The fleshed out universe of ME is amazing, the creatures psychologically real, and it's a new take on the Sci-Fi genre. In other words, it isn't the same retread of Star Wars stories (Dark Side vs. Light Side redux with a pathetic Dark Side character). I do still love the original trilogy, and Bioware's Knights of the Old Republic is excellent. It's just that the movies and stories now are so childishly fictional or poorly written it's pathetic. Palpatine switching bodies, Sith and Dark Jedi popping up everywhere (or Jedi for that matter who somehow survived the purge but never thought to help overturn the Empire), an Imperial remnant that won't die (because new villains are TOO hard to come up with) and don't even get me started on that lame "living planet" and how some animals are immune to the Force. The Force is in ALL living things. Christ. Unless these creatures are anti-matter, they have to be part of the Force! This is a sad rant, but it's true. Star Wars should be about fantasy, discovery, fun. The tales don't have to be epic. As long as it has heart, I love the stuff. The heart is gone.
Timecop is Jean Claude VanDamme's best film.

That's not a compliment, by the way.

Yeah, Dark Horse does a damn fine job with Star Wars. Better than Lucas anyway. It's a passable property. Although, it has pretty much eaten up the entire Dark Horse line. Goon and any Hellboy related comics are still their best original properties.

Here's hoping for The Goon
