...Didn't seem as conceptually wowing as his other recent work, and it was odd seeing the remanants of a narrative wedged in there...But I still found it immensely enjoyable. Aside from the nostalgia factor, it was incredibly beautiful and very authentic. Not just in the literal details but he was able to nail exact moods with little more than one slow motion shot. Like the scene where the older street kid borrows his board, as he sits about watching everyone else skate, and the way the street kid smiles, you know your going to do something you don't really want to do and know is wrong but feel pressure to go through with. Meh. Most people will hate it I guess. Still, I hope more check it out. Plus hes got a "proper" movie coming up anyway. The film also reminded me alot of Wassup Rockers, even the strange idea of jamming a traditional story into something that feels like a documentary, but I think Rockers attempt at being natural kind of slipped into being amateur too many times, which never happens in Park.

I didn't read it as "sweet" or "puppy love". I don't think he was interested in her at all. And her "interest" in him is presented as something artificial and ritualistic. She's a vapid teenage girl, the mindless variety that takes her boyfriend to the mall to play dress up and calls her girlfriend to gab about losing her virginity seconds after doing it. Maybe she wouldn't seem so shallow if she wasn't next to Gabe Nevins, who is playing someone staring into a deep well of emotion. But I don't think Van Sant meant to portray "tentative puppy love" or sweetness.
