...then let's at least do it right.

During the next Academy Awards or Golden Globes, we warn all civilians and a few select celebrities (the list would be short). Then we set off a small nuclear device and wipe them all out. The entire fucking industry. Actually, it'd have to be closer to the People's Choice Awards than the Oscars, so we can get Michael Bay and Bret Ratner. We'd have to get all the studio suits too. I leave that plan up to you, I can't think of every Goddamned thing.

Then, whoever replaces them can make all the remakes they want. Except they won't, because whoever replaces them will have original fucking ideas.

The number of criminal corporate enterprises we've seen exposed in the last 10 years proves Robocop to be a visionary film. They've privatized everything in our nation, and now they're auctioning off the airwaves for total privatization (instead of doing the smart thing for the country and leasing them). Blackwater supplanted much of the police in New Orleans. How much longer before we see a Robocop America? Fight the Power!!

And Owen Wilson as Officer Murphy!

Bah! Like Merrick said...

First off, I have the X-rated version of this movie on laserdisc, and the film should have been released like that in theaters. It's unfortunate that nearly every film Verhoeven has made has been cut up by the MPAA. The man knows how to make a film that can shock, provoke, and excite it's viewers. Leave him alone, MPAA.

That being said, there really is only one way to create another Robocop movie. That is by allowing Verhoeven to direct, and Weller to play Robocop. However, that statement assumes that both men would be willing to do it. I'm fairly certain Verhoeven would not touch another Robocop film, unless he had total control over the entire production, and was being paid a gazillion dollars to do it.

Weller, on the other hand, I believe, would never ever ever do another Robocop film. There were just way too many hours getting into and out of the suit for it to be worth his while again. That's a shame, really, because, by God, NOBODY can play Robocop like Weller. He had it all down, even putting emotion into the character when you couldn't even see his face. THAT is the mark of an actor. The viewer actually felt sympathy and sorrow for the character of Robocop without even seeing a face.

When this movie came out, when, in 1987? ...it was shocking and violent, and nobody had ever seen anything like it. This can never be reproduced or reinvented. It's something that happens and then never happens again. If we can't have Verhoeven and Weller again, then the film just isn't worth making.

There is no way "Robocop" could be remade in today's PG-13-centric world. The original is one of my Top 10 favorite movies ever... I can quote it backward and forward.

It's interesting how marginalized Hollywood is these days... there's no desire to take a chance on a new idea or franchise... they'd rather strip mine something that people recognize. In another 10 years, we'll probably see a remake of "The Matrix".

I never read the comic but the game was pretty good. I mean for a side scroller, 15 years ago.

So yeah, they should totally adapt that. Because the complex an nuanced theme of a robot trying to kill a woman and her kid can't fully be explored with only two movie trilogies and a TV show.

(I actually like the TV show)

Continuing the franchise is fine, so long as it's not a remake. Think you can do one better than Basil Poledouris, Paul Verhoeven, the meanest stop-motion effects in movie history, and pyrotechnics and sound that brought splatterpunk to action cinema? Without the satire, Robocop would have been a landmark. With the satire, it's a goddamned masterpiece of action cinema, and as fun as Starship Troopers is, Robocop made all the salient points first, and made them more honestly. You gonna remake Alien or Terminator? Isn't it time we remade the Matrix? Write something. If you can't write something, read something. No risk equals no reward. If you can't afford the risk of new content, expect someone else to take the brass ring. Be content with your mediocrity and your crappy financial performance, and stop sending out press releases about the "new" company you're building. Robocop is about the dangers of bureaucracy and the importance of taking risks for the good of others. Instead of remaking it, try watching it! The message of the film is not subtle. If you missed it, you have no business making movies at all.

A re-boot is a terrible idea. I can already picture Hayden Christensen VOLUNTEERING for the operation, getting some go-go-gadget suit of ADDRidiculous Armor, and shooting criminals in the leg below the knee in the name of the law. Nope, I don't think a re-boot would work (unless they plan on amping up the satire and violence).

A sequel probably wouldn't be any better unless Miner and Neumeier come back to write and Verhoeven directs. Even then, it better one hell of a script.

The bold sarcasm that made Robocop great isn't popular in cinema anymore, sadly. I'd love a new sequel that would introduce an American global-police force, with commercials promoting it as "Kickin' ass and takin' names around the globe! Join today!!!"

Oh, and if Weller isn't willing to comeback for Robocop, I elect Phil Lamarr. I'm only halfway kidding.

That is unless a horribly titled Bond film with a bunch of teenage love interests for an ugly old Craig fighting against Pacino's latest phone-in performance turns out to be some groundbreaking masterpiece, but everything I hear just turns me more and more off this one.

Maybe there are some secret negotiations going on. I wish.

You know, this could be disastrous, but if it was done right it could be a thing of beauty. I've been saying this for years: ROBOCOP was made before Rodney King! There's so much more to address, and yet so much of the movie is still relevant: the privatization of everything, the militarization of police weaponry, amoral corporations fucking everyone over for money. I would love to see how Verhoeven would approach the material now.

As for the PG-13 thing I don't think we should worry about that unless there is actual evidence. They already killed the original series by doing that, I don't think we should assume they are stupid enough to do that again.

It's one of my favorite movies. There's Nothing like seeing that kind of violence at the age of 10, totally blew me away. Someone mentioned that nobody thought to shoot Robo in the exposed portion of his face. I recently picked up the Collector's Edition and watched the behind the scenes stuff. It was explained that his face was not actually his skull, muscle, and skin tissue. When they built him they actually wrapped synthetic skin over his cyborg skull. He had a brain and some spinal cord but his head was all nuts and bolts and synthetic tissue. Including his eyes and teeth.

They said the purpose was to leave a bit of humanity with him so it didnt drive him mad if he were to see himself. Furthermore it was an indication to others that he was in fact a human in a cyborg body. Bringing on the creep factor. If Paul directs the reboot (he has already expressed interest) then I dont mind at all. If anyone else does I hope it goes down like a drunk 80's blonde bimbo at a Poison concert.

"hyper-sensitivity and over-amped political correctness"? Ugh .
by The Wolf at the Door
Mar 14th, 2008
12:09:51 PM
Just to throw this out there, I really don't buy the whole "oh, our society's gotten too sensitive and PC" line. What the hell is "hyper-sensitive" or "politically correct" about the wave of torture porn we're currently suffering? How about 24? Or Ann Coulter?

I'd say in response if anyone is "hyper-sensitive" these days, it's the corporations. All this consolidation of market wealth and media ownership we've seen in the past two decades gives the corporate board room WAY too much power. And you think any of them want a movie that calls out the American Corporation for moral corruption and inhumanity? There's your PC right there. ("Pervasive Corporatism"? Or is that too cute?)

Not to go all political rant here, but I tend to think the "PC-police boogeyman" supposedly censoring all of us is really just a strawman distraction when the real problem here is media monopoly. Sorry, but you really can say or do just about anything you want in America ... but if you're expecting the major studios to throw it on screen, you better not breath a negative word against the suits. (If the "PC police" claims a Don Imus every other year or so, you can just hold your breath and he'll be back on the air before you exhale. But a Robocop movie that makes corporate control of public services into the main villain? I wouldn't hold my breath for that.)

WTF!?! Robocop, and yes, Robocop 2 still stands up to current scrutiny. What the hell needs to be updated about either film? Not the special effects. Not the social commentary. If they need to milk this particular cash cow some more, just continue the chronology from the end of the second picture.

I don't think the reason a new RoboCop would lack the edge and balls of the first one has to do with the times (or audiences) being especially "politically correct" or sensitive. The reason it won't have any balls or edge will be that entertainment and politics don't get mixed very much anymore. Not because they can't be mixed, but because our entertainment has become more bland and less provocative. I wouldn't blame the audience for being too sissy or soft for it, I would blame the studios for blanching at anything that suggests opinion. (The first RoboCop has a pretty distinct point of view on the subject of privatizing public services.) Maybe that was Merrick's point all along, but I felt like the distinction was important.

pokadoo, Frank Miller's original screenplay for Robocop 2 was recently adapted as an 8-issue comic book mini-series. It's been collected as a trade and can be found on Amazon here: http://tinyurl.com/ywgkwa. I have a copy but I haven't read it yet. Has anyone else read it?

They just said they're continuing the franchise. Hollywood logic dictates that by continue they mean reboot and remake, but we've yet to see that being said though. I'm hoping for (if they must do this) then a Rocky or Rambo like sequal. Years after the first two movies, Robocop is called into action once more. With the big twist in this one being that his son is now some kind of crime lord or something who he must now stop, no matter the cost.

It was one of those classic movies the result of everything coming together perfectly at just the right time. Director, actors, score composer (Basil's work here is excellent), special effects, shock value, social critique of capitalism, corporate greed, etc., and everything else that went into making this movie a classic. This movie had guts and unfortunately these days very very very few films do or are allowed to. The Robocop movies got progressively worse and if the pattern continues we'll all have to be high on Nuke to enjoy Robocop 4. Haha.

Wasn't that more or less re-worked into the pilot to the Robocop TV series? Based on that it probably wouldn't have been too great. That said, I think the TV series was the only thing after the first film to actually give some thought to man inside the suit, rather than Robocop just being a walking killing machine like he was in the sequels and Prime Directives.

Personally I think they should get Weller in the suit and Verhoeven behind the camera again to do one final Robocop story, and have it set further into the future where the possibility exists for medicine to recreate Murphy's body and the struggles Robocop has over whether he can go back to being "human" or not. And whoever scores it needs to extensively crib from Poledouris' magnificent score for the first film.

I've always wanted to see Robocop rebooted for 2 reasons only: 1) Correct all the mistakes made with Robocop 2 & 3, Robocop: The Series, and the handful of Canadian produced tv movies. 2) Add a storyline that allows Peter Weller to return AS "MURPHY" -- maybe modern technology allows him the option of having a human body again and in the transition, trains a new batch of modern OCP fighters. On a side note: I would like to see Nancy Allen back as well and turn ED-209 into a comic relief sidekick, a true ally to Robocop!

And when a director's artistic eye can blend interesting camera angles while utilizing shadows and silhouettes, in addition to the action and movement within a story, we can be quite surprised by the results. BATMAN and the PUNISHER are two characters that just SCRRREEEAM for such visual impact. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for a director to take full advantage of the visual power that such characters offer.

The only way you can continue or reboot a popular franchise 20 years later is to have a superior director and a superior script. Hell, even Verhoven may not be able to do it justice after 20 years... They should just leave this franchise alone. Robo1 was great, Robo2 was entertaining and the rest was dreck. The only way I can see continuing Robocop is to: 1) place it 40-60 years in future 2) Have whatever foreshadowed diasters (now) happen 3) Have whatver surviving cities remade as corporations who offer protection from the outside world but at the cost of personal liberties (sorta-kinda Hopper/Pittsburgh-Emerald Tower in LOTD) Maybe then, they might use Murphy as a template or just a law enforcer who tries to keep down insurgents or outsiders. He discovers his humanity and fights against his programmers....

I truly don't understand the hate vomited on both of these sequels, especially where Predator 2 is concerned. I thought predator 2 did everything a good sequel was supposed to do: provided more of the same of what was loved about the original, while not reguritating what was already done and adding new settings, plots, and characters. The opening sequence with the fire fight between the columbians and the police was broken. Harrigan was a bad ass. The predator was obviously a young buck who brought all his cool gear with him, as opposed to the grizzled veteran who was "toughing it" in the original. The worst crime that Robocop 2 should go to movie jail for was an unremarkable music score, which can change the enjoyment level of a movie bigtime.

The director just wasn't up to the task for most of it, and he had just as interesting a cast to work with. The final chase in the film was fucking fantastic, but the conclusion was strange and flat. Robocop 2 was just a different beast from the original. It was an action comedy. Not a satire. It had moments that were satirical, but it decided to mostly go with vulgarity and cheap offensiveness instead. I thought it did those things as well as you could though. But also, it had an odd, sudden and flat ending. I didn't dislike either film though. In fact, I thought they were pretty solid. Shit, put Robo 2 next to Robo 3 and its a masterpiece.

No more Robocops, please. The first one was great. Unless they do it as a sequel with Peter Weller (and pretend the second one didn't happen). This one can focus on the human portion of Robocop deteriorating and going senile. The old Robocop eventually goes on a rampage when they try to put him in a retirement home, and the only thing that can stop him is a new Robocop - a young Tobey Maguire that's critically injured by the old Robocop. The new Robocop can transform into vehicles, fire hydrants, and even sexual toys. But can all his new-fangled technology overcome the wisdom of senile Robocop?

Although I get a kick out of that movie for the nostalgia factor, it doesn't really hold up as well as say, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. However, the "meta" that surrounds it (i.e. Hong Kong Cavaliers, Blue Blaze Irregulars, Hanoi Xan, Perfect Tommy, Big Norse, etc.) is pretty damn funny. Methinks more so than the actual movie.

Yes Hollywood why don't you remake Predator while you're at it...only with smart arsed kids who have knowledge of science fiction films and claimed George Lucas raped their childhoods. They could get out of dangerous situations in the film using text messaging on their cell phones( mobiles ) The younger audiences will love it. Maybe they assemble an army and join forces using podcasts, YouTube MySpace & Facebook, to defeat the Predator. Yes I think it will be a winner. Is Rob Zombie available to direct it? Fill the soundtrack with lots of death metal or whatever kids call it today. Oh yes! Ya gotta have a famous rapper or R&B star in the film. Does 50 Cent or Nelly have some space free in the next few months? Woahhh! One more thing...what if we show the Predators torturing the captured nerdy kid or the black kid in a torture dungeon? It could be like the Saw movies only science fiction. Yes we're onto a winner here.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy certainly SHOULD be a classic, but I have a feeling that they won't end up that way. I guess we'll find out in 20 years. I think Peter Jackson is a good filmmaker, but that he only did a good job with a brilliant story. Kind of how it works with a great joke. A joke that anyone can tell and get a guaranteed laugh, but if someone truly funny says it then it's even funnier.

Cornponius, how 'bout Hugo Weaving?
by Frietag
Mar 14th, 2008
05:54:44 PM
Peter Weller was terrific as Murphy, of course, because he's a great "mask actor" (that's actually an acting technique). But so is Hugo Weaving -- as he proved in V FOR VENDETTA (in fact I think he's the only reason that film worked at all).

And no matter how much Weller says he'd never come back ... I'll bet he'd come back if the suit were redesigned, and if Verhoeven asked him to. But first you'd have to get Verhoeven on board, and why would he come back to work in America at this point? He's having too much fun doing stuff like BLACK BOOK, which I thought rocked.

If you couldn't get Verhoeven, I think Zack Snyder wouldn't embarrass himself; that's worth a try. But you'd better get someone halfway hardcore on it pronto. Because otherwise, in a few years, you're gonna get some horrible crossover piece of junk like ROBOCOP ACADEMY 5. Don't you just know it!
sigh... I smell a PG-13 Ben Stiller project...
by br1947
Mar 14th, 2008
05:57:28 PM

I love the original, but I always wondered what it would be like if they completely lost the campy humor and made it even darker. Something delving deeper into the "what is the value of a life \ corporate slavery via technology" dark dreary mind fuck that ends with Murphy killing everyone at OCP that resurrected him and offing himself at the end. It'd be a serious downer, but interesting.

Unfortunate ly, we'll probably get a Ben Stiller & Micheal Bay PG-13 monstrosity.

Robocop 2 and Total Recall
by BrandLoyalist
Mar 14th, 2008
06:25:39 PM
Total Recall was of course Verhoeven's next... both came out in 1990 & both pleased, err, shocked me with their incredible disregard for human life. Bystanders were mown down by the dozen in action scenes that made no attempt to depict their senseless deaths as anything other than exciting. But although Robocop 2 had a higher body count (just how many people did Cane kill in the final fight?), it was Verhoeven who raised the violence to such an extreme level that it just had to be more of his coy satire: Arnold picking up that machine-gunned bystander on the escalator and using him to catch bullets - first from below, then above, then below again - is still one of the most outrageous acts of movie violence I have ever seen. Bravo! Meanwhile, there Robocop 2 was, the sequel in the franchise he left behind, serving as a perfect unironic example of extreme action movie violence. I liked Robocop 2 a lot, though; great action movie. I'm glad we don't have companies like OCP in the real world today (*cough* Blackwater *cough* Infragard).

RoboCop was ahead of its time in more ways than one. What other originally X-rated films ultimately spawned a kid-friendly TV series? Really-- He was the only reason the first one was any good (And it is very good. It's great social satire.) Without his unique voice, Robocop is a rather stupid premise.

I can imagine the remake will have all sorts of pop and rap music tied-in for the soundtrack, and will star a bunch of 20-somethings because, from the way movies look today, there are no protagonists over 28 years old.

And Robocop will have a MySpace page.

Americans love violence, always have, always will. You better watch out, though, because if there is a nipple slip it may be rated NC-17. The only bit of late 80's early 90's badassness that comes close to that is Ronny Cox's speech in Total Recall, right before he was going to scramble Melina's brains. "She will obedient and subservient, like a woman should be". Amen, brother!

Robocop 2 wasn't tame, but it still wasn't great
by Drath
Mar 15th, 2008

The brutal mean-spiritedness of Robocop 2 was a big part of why the franchise dwindled. It was so far in one direction when the character was becoming a kid-franchise character with toys and cartoons that they went and neutered the franchise in later incarnations. There has to be a balance. Also I humbly submit that the original Bladerunner-esque setting that was intended is very crucial to setting things apart from the lame lame LAME movies that have come out since Robocop 2 (which at least had a hell of a cool answer to the ED-209 in "Rococop 2"), so long as it doesn't come with a Judge Dredd Stallone crapiness. Also I liked the Mr. Burns quality of The Old Man in Robocop 2, and I was sorry it was never revisited again.

Robocop influences

I'd definitely list Judge Dredd as an inspiration for Robocop, but the other heavy influence has to be Frank Miller's "Dark Knight Returns." The news spots as social commentary, a decaying metropolis, the 70's cinema Death Wish/Taxi Driver style intro to the main character character, pulling bad guys through walls....started (in a way) with Dark Knight Returns.

For the most part after seeing the first movie, all I can think of was Judge Dredd meets Deathlok.

It's quite obvious that the cyborg findig his humanity in a dysotopian future was influenced by Marvel's Deathlok the Demolisher. As much as I loved the first Robocop, I was pissed that one of my comic based icons never made it to the big scree.A Deathlok movie would kill, but too many of the "uninitiated" would accuse Deathlok of being a ripoff of Robocop.

Ed 209 was inspired from the Robotech mecha,so would it be far fetched that the name Robocop came said Anime?

Regardless of what you may think, Equilibrium was a good scifi film, not only better than that mess called Dredd, but even that last wretched Matrix sequel.

The message was obviously about how shit can get out of hand with too much government intervention in which personal freedoms are sacrificed. (I.E. art, emotions and the like.) Fer instance look how Hilary wanted to regulae videogames, same as defunct Gov. Shitzer what'fuckin' next?

and yes the Gun kata scnes helped as well. No I'm not Kurt but I do agree with the other poster that Ultraviolent sucked royally.

beign the obvious template not the film.

And while the film WAS shite, not all the FX were crap. The ABC Warrior and Mean Machine were awesome. And both done by the great Chris Cunningham (I think he also sculpted the Dredd Helmet but can't remember). If memory serves Cunninham (who was called Halls at the time and came from being a Bisley Clone on the actual 2000ad comic) was still a teenager at the time.

Although I did joke way back there about it being O.K. to remake Robocop because he's a remake of Dredd, I can't see why you need to do it - the satire and the art deco look make it fairly timeless as far as I can see, Commodore Amiga graphics included. Bah humbug!

I always thought Equilibrium was way underated and when some critics compared it to the Matrix was a bit rediculous. They are entirely two different films.

Just that one was mostly hyperbole and the other was thought provoking, albiet a thinking man's scifi actioner. My friends still to this day write it off as some "rip-off".

And as bad as Robocop 2 was, Robocop 3 was one of the worst sequels ever! Frank Miller needs to redeem himself and work on the sequel/remake.I would'nt be surprised if Robocop was influenced somewhat from the Dark Knight returns, (Chishu_Ryu called it.)besides Dredd and Deathlok.

They did that crummy bike chase with the long unbroken shots (at that time audiences had no cinematic experience of those sort of shots outside of motion simulator thrill rides) and the cg vehicles and stuff. They also used a ton of dough building a street set that ended up looking like a cheesy Blade Runner rip.

But at least Hammerstein and MM rocked. Bok!

Also thanks a lot Hollywood. Like we are shitting are pants right now trying to steal away all talented directors from other countries just to have them make crap. Oliver Hirschbiegel and Mikael Håfström come to mind just to throw some names out there. Paul Verhoeven is one of the few directors who got their start over seas and came to big time Hollywood and succeeded in a big way. So Hollywood treats him like shit and so he goes back home pretty much saying fuck Hollywood. I like to call it Fritz Lang syndrome, even though Lang came to work in America for much different reasons then directors today (even though the H man was a big fan of his) what happened to his work is very obvious, but Verhoeven (Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee to name a few) are the exceptioins. Its the same reason directors like Pedro Almodóvar don't get sucked into coming to hollywood. But I guess Paul is back, to bad because if Black Book was a glimpse into what he wanted to do back on his home turf (even if it was a little Fassbinder), we had some good movies to look forward to. Anyways screw a Robocop revision, don’t mess with something that’s already been that fucked. I would like to see Verhoeven’s take on the Alien vs. Predetor movies before those get too fucked up to save. And by that I mean before they start releasing AVP movie direct to DVD (I know the last two aren’t anything to talk about but at least they got a theatrical release). Once a series has hits the DTV point (like Robocop pretty much did with the TV show) its beyond saving.

but the rest blew chunks. And just out of curiosity Stalkeye, your friends who say Equilibrium sucked, did they actually see the whole movie? If they did,and that's their opinion fine, but if they've never seen the whole thing then they have no right to critique it. Same premise is for any movie, well I guess you could watch a little bit, get disgusted by it's lameness, and shut if off, but you know what I mean.

They did'nt bother to watch it due to the ignorance of mistaking it for a Matrix wannabee.(Well that and the skepticism of Taye Diggs in a serious role.)

I had offered to lend them my store bought copy, yet the stubborn bastids still refused to give it a chance.Their loss, however one of the best scenes in Equilibrium goes to the very last second regarding Bale's facial expression as a sign of regaining his humanity. It's further proof that Christian so deserves the mantle of Batman. (unlike Clooney or Keaton)after

I'm surprised Wimmer didn't come down on him. He was smiling through half the movie. Diggs as a person has a wonderful smile, and I guess he couldn't supress it. It was just wrong for this movie for obvious reasons. The only explanation is he was off the dose like Robert the Bruce, but Preston should have picked up on it. He honed in on Partridge for a minor slip if you can even call it that.

I was 17, had my own car bought with my own money, and it was the first rated R movie I could see on my own. I was well rewarded.

Yeah, Gram I thought Taye's smiling was unusual when everyone else's emotion was stagnant via Equilibrium. But your theory sounds accurate as there were moments when Robert the Bruce (Agnus Mcfadden of Braveheart and The Rat Pack)seemed to slightly burst out with emotion.

But flaw or no, it did'nt stop me from appreciating this film, which needs not warrant a sequel as the story within itself was complete.Great ending with great music during credits.Too bad Ultraviolet could'nt follow suit.

cool, being 17 and financially independent enough to afford my own place, and live on my own. Isn't that every teenager's dream, then reality sets in, and they realize they need to pay a mortgage. As far as my own money though I am quite proud of the fact I bought my first car on my own in cash with my own money, and mom and dad didn't hand it to me on a silver platter like so many spoiled people nowadays.
