I remember my mom dragged me along with her to see the original when I was a wee lad. Why is Hollywood remaking movies from the 80s? Has that much time passed by to warrant such remakes? I can't think of one remake that was superior to the original, save The Thing. Didn't The Producers follow in a similar creative pattern? The original Mel Brooks film was followed up years later by a musical? Didn't that bomb at the Box Office? I much preferred the original film.

and right here's where you start paying. In sweat. And crappy remakes. Didn't they try redoing the show, and that sucked too. I think they should bring back the guy who played Montgomery as a psycho, one-armed teacher who sells nukes (imdb it if you don't get the reference). And maybe cast the nurse from Scrubs as the Debbie Allen role. Can't wait not to see this.

by kevred
Mar 13th, 2008

...one movie and TV show at a time? Nobody's re-written Hemingway's books or re-painted Van Gogh's works.

I know it's common talkback fodder, but the persistence and thoroughness of this remake fever when it comes to movies, music, and TV is starting to get really disturbing.

It's as though a whole generation doesn't have any unqiue experience of their own to draw from, but only regurgitated second-hand experience of someone else's earlier creativity.

It almost seems like there are just too many hungry channels of media distribution to feed. There's so much good original work going on, but the number of noise-producing media outlets is like the shelves of some ungodly Super Wal-Mart: so vast that the only way to fill them is with mountains of cheap junk food.

stop doing remakes. If you have a story to tell similar to Fame, at least bother to think up new character names and slightly different circumstances or setting. Yeah, you'll get the inevitable "oh, well, this is just like Fame", but screw that noise. Like someone said above, you could probably make that argument for every single major release movie to come out in the past 5 years.

remakes show lack of originality and are fuled by marketing types who want a built-in audience. It's annoying.

You don't need to excel at something to become famous, you just need to shout 'me me me me!' louder than the next monkey. In the words of the late, great Edward Blake whenasked what became of the American Dream: "It came true, baby. You're looking at it."

...it's, as BigTexas42 said above, that they're a replacement for creativity, which often leaves actual original talent out in the cold in favor of studio hacks who just cut & paste the work of their betters.

Theater, like live music, is a living, breathing art that evolves and mutates in the hands of every new performer--its very basis for existence is the ongoing present moment, its vitality in movement, not stasis and presevration.

These cheap, knocked-off remade movies seem more like re-painted paintings--kind of pointless. It'd be like re-recording a jazz musician's improvisation, note for note. All the pieces would be there, but the spark of what made it great in the first place would be missing.

Of course, some film remakes are not only good, but brilliant and vital, even with a great original (Ben Hur, anyone?) My beef is primarily with all the cash-in projects that have nothing to do with deepening the art or experience, just making a quick buck the easy way. The difference is usually clear.

Totally agree remake not needed....

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? There's going to be a FAME remake as opposed to spending ANY of the money that will be used to finance this on an actual ORIGINAL movie -- you know, something actually NEW?

For fuck's sake, this is yet again either proof positive that Hollywood suits are utterly brain dead and creatively bankrupt or that the Mayan calendar-predicted end of the world is actually approaching fast.

Great, just what the world needs -- a movie, like the original, that will focus on teens who have had NO real life experiences, yet they will have sooooo fucking much to say about life and love and how things should be in the world and blah, blah, blah, because we adults just don't "get it" or aren't as artistically insightful as them.

Fuck you, Hollywood and, fuck you, whoever is financing/making/starring in this. The ONLY bright spot to come out of this completely whore-driven endeavor is that it will give some future CW star his first big break. Other than that it's like flushing money down the toilet that SHOULD be used on a NEW screenplay...a NEW idea...even if you want to roll the dice and make a musical or something.

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, HOLLYWOOD, STOP RAPING YOUR OLD FILM CATALOGUES WHEN THERE ARE NEW SCRIPTS OUT THERE THAT YOU SHOULD BANKROLL. Ever stop to think that maybe a "new idea" will be the next STAR WARS or next LOTR that will bring you in a zillion dollars? No, you didn't because you have your heads up your asses and you DON'T have a single creative idea in your fucking bodies!

I wonder...
