I love the casting on this film. I love the casting on Hulk. But neither film is a surefire winner (in face I'm almost positive Hulk is a loser). Even the potentially crappy films have some great actors.

seem to always be really jerky. And it's not a problem with the computer - it's like, even when you go through frame by frame in QT Player, some frames are, like, duplicated. And shit. Makes for really irritating viewing experiences, particularly for a film of this kind.

Best trailer they have used yet, and much better then that other crap they have released! But makes me even question more the quality of this movie. My guess the reception has not been what expected, hence the many previews here lately. Still looks like crap in the big picture of things. I really wanted to like this. Not happening.

not a sequel, nor another DC/MArvel property, nor a decades later four-quel (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that).

And yeah, I know it's an adaptation of an anime. But it still looks fresh nonetheless.

I loved it and the original Jonny Quest. I think this looks like it captures the feel of the cartoon fantastically. Racer "X"'s voice is a perfect interpretation of the cartoons racer X. It seems like a really specific niche,(the over 40 nerds), but I am sold.

by Billy The Fish
Mar 13th, 2008
07:51:22 AM
...it's still a turd. This film is the cinematic equivalent of buying a three-year-old a top of the range Scalextric set. You've thrown all that money around, but in the end the kid is just as happy playing with the box. All style - no content. This will be the year's biggest money pit. Avoid.

douche, not ACTS like her. Check what Trixie looks and acts like in the original cartoon then the scene where she looks at Speed and says:"Speed Racer what are you thinking?" and tell me she's not wrong for the part. Same with that hackey John Goodman, Jeebus how chiche'd can you get? Everyone else seems spot on including, and especially Matthew Fox. I said I was in, BUT this movie will fail. Too niche, too garish, too improbable. Try and picture the meatheads that went in droves to see Transformers comning out going: "That was STUPID!" Dick Tracy all over again, but faster."

This was fucking brilliant. Now I understand what they're trying to do. Shit, man, they NEED this trailer to be seen by everyone thinking of seeing this flick. Jack Shepard as Racer X? Fuck, I didn't have any idea. And the fight scene looked like Diabolik was trying to steal Speed's neckerchief and got caught. Kidding. This looks fucking great. I thought the swordfighting cars looked silly, though.

In the early 70's & 80's, my Dad used me as an excuse to go see every shitty Sci-Fi film that came near a cinema. As a result I am the only person I know who not only saw The Last Starfighter and Battle Beyond The Stars but also BOTH Battlestar Galactica movies on the big screen. Now that I have twin daughters myself, it's payback time. They will be going to see Speed Racer whether they like it or not.

The trailer is one giant slab of cheddar, albiet one laced with hallucinogens of various sorts. I also don't know how well the anime sensibility will translate into live action, other than 'not very well'. But i trust the Wachowski siblings vision-quest-thing enough to pay to see this in cinemas.

John Goodman. Besides "The Big Lebowski" can anyone name a decent live action movie he has been in? Gilga is right - this has "Flintstones" written all over it. Want to make it better? I forgot what a talented actor he was! As I mentioned live action we can rule out Monsters and Cars (which was a brief cameo at the end of the movie recreating his Monsters character). Let's see, oh yes he followed up Raising Arizona and O Brother with such gems as "Dirty Deeds", "One Night At McCools", "Coyote Ugly" , "Blues Brothers 2000", and "Evan Almighty". Cartoons turned in live action movies with John Goodman? How's this track record - "Flintstones", "Rocky and Bullwinkle"

Speed Racer will do just fine at the box office and, whether or not it's "great", will exceed the public's low-to-non-existent expectations by a mile. Then.... next Christmas... the fucking HDTV Blue-Ray tipping point will tip BIG TIME and every household in America and beyond will be snatching up Speed Racer DVDs for all those sorryass stockings that need stuffed and it will blow off the shelves in a huge way. Look at the movie, all the fine lines and stark contrast and hyper-action and hyper-color saturation... the design and pacing and look of every frame of these trailers looks CALCULATED to look great later, in HD, at home.

Hugo Weaving is great and even Keanu holds his own, but it's like nails on the chalkboard everytime Trinity, Switch, or Mouse is onscreen... and which of the Wachowski siblings came up with those stupid f-ing names anyway??
Looks Awsome.

Yes, it definitely looked like it - that episode(s) really stuck with me from when I saw it as a child. Hahah, outstanding, I agree on the robotic tape recorder bird! Speed Racer started my obsession with cars as a child that I've never let go - Speed Racer, Hotwheels, Matchbox, slotcars, go-karts and I run SCCA/HPDE's around the Southeast. There are some things that aren't clicking with me yet, but this is by far the best trailer of the movie (moved my assessment from a 4/10 to at least a 7/10).

you're either thinking of brian cox or brendan gleeson. and i think john goodman rules too. besides roseanne, he's done some pretty good work for the past 25 years. he was in revenge of the nerds, king ralph and was babe ruth. and i think he may be typecast as pops racer in this. because usually, ever since flintstones, he's usually been first choice for these cartoon or book adaptations or thankless dad parts. just like deniro with mob roles ever since taxi driver.

...I'll watch Speed Racer. It doesn't look like the cartoon, it doesn't look cutting edge it just looks nasty. Bunch of actors standing in front of green screens while poorly and ugly animated cartoons run behind them. Like some kind of fucked up performance theatre. On top of that, it just looks like a really bad, cloying film. "Speed Racer, Slow down!" Jesus. Strange how John Goodman is in this sad excuse for a matchbox commercial (actually, if it was a matchbox commercial it would be halfway decent) and the other very similar looking pile-o-shit based on a cartoon, The Flinstones.

by Drath
Mar 13th, 2008
04:39:48 PM
I agree that this looks like fun--although I liked the first trailer a lot more. One thing though that bugs me is I have just assumed that Fox's Racer X was still going to be Speed's brother Rex, and that actually kind of added to the cool that I knew that. But then I noticed a different guy was standing with the family in the teaser. Is Racer X no longer Rex Racer? There's some great pathos with that connection that I am sorry to see lost. Look at this, I was never even that big of a Speed Racer fan and I'm saying how the movie should be done! Guess that just seemed like a hook for me and now I feel like part of the fun has been lost already. Also this only adds to my belief that Matthew Fox shoulda been Cyclops. Not to put down James Marsden (who should be Hal Jordan anyway), but Fox'd be great in that part. Maybe when someone with a brain takes over the X-Men movies and undoes the damage done in X3...

And if the kid in any of you can't laugh at TomBodet's comment and realize it's actually true, then the kid in you IS truly dead -- so just move on and leave the rest of us to have a fun time at a true popcorn movie.

Personally, I can't wait to see this. It DOES look fresh (yes, even as an adaptation of a sixties cartoon) just because of it's fresh design look and color scheme and energy and most of all because it's not an upteenth sequel to something we've already seen over and over.

I will absolutely, positively drive anywhere out of my way to see this in IMAX for sure. I love Matthew Fox's spot on Racer X voice since it makes me break out into a grin every time, and all I can say is MAMMOTH CAR!!!

Is have the actors read really fast and take all the punctuation out of the script so that the actors never pause between words and all their sentences seem to run together with no change in pitch or tone and you have to watch it in slo-mo to catch what was just said and then you throw in an "aaaahhh" and an "ohhhh" every now and then and then you have a real live-action Speed Racer. You should be rejoicing - not moaning. And even if it doesn't totally work..so what?! We should be encouraging new and original visions in Hollywood. Well, I'm not going to lampoon you for not liking 'Reloaded' and 'Revolutions'. I dig 'em. You don't. Let's just leave it at that. But let's say - for argument's sake - that 'Reloaded' and 'Revolutions', as a single project (which is how they were treated), were indeed blips in the Wachowskis' creative career. That still doesn't take away from their incredible critical and/or commercial success with 'Bound', 'The Matrix', 'V For Vendetta', and even the Doc Frankenstein series (the Bros. started off as comic book writers, and were ready to resign solely to the world of comics and leave films behind after the bashing they received post-R&R - but Joel Silver talked them into the 'V' screenplay and then into writing and directing 'Speed Racer'). Those projects are certifiable proof that the Brothers are visionaries, and even if you didn't enjoy R&R as films, there's little denying that the visual audacity of those films is a thing of cinematic beauty. It's because of this that I have every confidence that 'Speed Racer' will be a huge hit, perhaps even becoming the biggest film of the Summer. Yeah, I said it :D But only time will tell.

I would say thats whats wrong with YOU. I don't need to get all my films from Hollywood. They do make movies elsewhere, some of them fucking good. Last year alone, we were flooded with far too many great films to keep up. If want to see something new, but don't feel like watching anything that isn't produced by one of the major American studios, thats your fault, not ours. Matrix Sequels
by LaserPants
Mar 14th, 2008
03:35:55 PM
Felt rushed and half thought out to me. I liked the underlying idea of this endless recycling of nations -- these opposing factions endlessly playing out the same problems over and over and over again. Pretty cool, smart idea / theme. Unfortunately, they overstretched, and though they're clearly pretty smart guys, they're nowhere near the kind of genius that could pull something like that off -- a guy like Kubrick, for instance. Basically, through their own hubris, they wound up pulling a Lucas, where they would've done much better just making it more of a straight forward war on two planes. The reason why the first Matrix was so popular having nothing to do with the philosophy underneath it, but the slo-motion kung fu and style on its surface. They overreached without a good set of wings and got burned.

Its my opinion, however, that SPEED RACER is going to redeem them -- its a simple story, told creatively, with an unbelievably cool visual style that even in the trailers looks absolutely mind-blowing. I'll be first in line this May, and I think its gonna be a huge hit.

Yup I love all three flicks. I can totally understand why some people feel burned by the sequels, but I loved them! I just feel the Matrix as a concept is so open to so many possibilities that everyone had their own ideas about what the sequels should've been or what philosophy they should've approached that it would've been impossible for the Wachowskis to please everyone, seriously I myself dreamed up plenty of crazy shit and pictured my own crazy slo mo kung fu sequences in my mind. Frankly I think there's plenty of room open to make side stories for television or even more animated shorts... Video games are another possibility, but I don't think games can really capture it. Frankly a high budget TV series of different stories by different directors and writers, animated and live action would be a dream project come true! The possibilities and exploration are endless!

Back on topic though... if anything Speed Racer and perhaps to some extent 'V for Vendetta' is showing that the Wachowskis do respect the source material! For all those whining about Transformers, imagine what it could've been like if they'd done it instead... I believe they'd be the perfect pick to handle adaptations of Neon Genesis Evangelion or even Metal Gear Solid... I just hope Sony won't fuck that up and word is that they're not exactly approaching the best people for the job... Anyone know what the deal with directors/writers are? Are they usually only working for a specific studio or under a specific producer? Some kind of contract thing? How's it work?

They Changed Quite A Bit In V FOR VENDETTA
by LaserPants
Mar 14th, 2008
04:20:55 PM
I think they did justice to the theme, and its, admittedly close to the original comic, but the ending is pretty much completely different. Of course, they had to update it to reflect Bushworld, but the ending with all the people in the masks wasn't as cool as the original ending where Evey actually becomes V and leads the people into a violent revolt against Norse Fire / British Govt.

Btw, I did really enjoy their take on V FOR VENDETTA, own the dvd and everything, so don't take my criticisms as "hating", I liked the movie lots. Methinks I'm gonna like SPEED RACER a whole helluva lot more. I mean, these trailers almost bring tears to my eyes, and a big goofy grin on my face. It makes me feel like I'm 5 again. Can't wait!

Riddle me this: They actually build a real-world, totally kick-ass, drop-dead-perfect replica of the Mach 5, then turn around and CGI every damn scene involving the race. Sure, some of the more spectacular sequences will require it, but if you're gonna push and pull and mutate reality to the extent these guys did you need to ground it somewhere in reality lest the brain reject it wholesale. If they're gonna have the garish colors and "living cartoon" aspect going on then the races need to be nitty-gritty, not simply more cartoon. All the cockpit scenes of Speed look like those bad B&W movies with a guy bouncing himself around in a little prop box with a projection of a race track blazing by on the screen behind him. Take Captain Whatsisname and the World of Tomarrow, it didn't work because there's no suspension of disbelief, you're never drawn in because your brain KNOWS there's nowhere to go, that's why at the end of Star Trek when the Enterprise putters off you want so much to go with it, to be out there with Kirk and the crew cheating death one more time, exploring the far-flung ancient remains from some long-extinct alien culture, or scoring with that green Orion slave girl, they took a wobbly model and they sold it just that hard. This one aint selling shit, it's that great big enormous cotten candy caramel ball Homer made, only with Rod and Todd and a bunch of ants stuck to the underneath.

Given that these are cars that swing swords at each other and pop up and down and grow tires etc. etc. the whole thing is completely unrealistic. The idea about 'grounding' something can have many different methods. One way is a sense of 'consistency'... it's sort of why cartoons, especially anime work in the first place... Lips aren't always synched, the use of speed lines, the deformity of characters faces, exaggerated action and expression.. cartoons and the animated form adapt to a wholly different logic, you know WIle-e-Cayote can't survive the pounding he can in real life, but because of how exaggerated the world is and the consistency of the gags to that world's logic, the viewer simply lets go of reality or any sort of proper grounding that he knows and adapts to the grounding of the world he is looking at... The thing is that world must be sold to the viewer as soon as they walk in and consistently reinforced, this must be accomplished by the opening scene almost immediatedly. Once that is done you can sell the viewer the reality of almost anything as long as there is a consistent basis for it. Star Trek aims to be believable as something that can happen in our own world. Speed Racer is taking place in another reality with its own set of rules and physics, like a cartoon or similar to how anime tends to defy the real world for spectacle, but with a sense of subtle consistency throughout it otherwise it would just appear random and takes one out of it. It's sort of like the Real World and the Matrix. I don't tihnk Sky Captain failed because of it's setting or style or lack of believability, but because they somehow made it really boring in terms of pacing and reminded us why some of those old colourless B films of the past suck ass. It wasn't exciting enough... just really slow... hell I couldn't even finish watching it...
SKY CAPTAIN and GODZILLA versus SPEED RACER

Since people have started to debate the world that was brought to life in SKY CAPTAIN using CGI versus what we'll see in SPEED RACER...as well as then comparing how poor SKY did at the box office and how that might be a barometer for SPEED too...let's keep in mind one really major thing that is ALREADY very, very, very apparent: SKY CAPTAIN looked like utter shit on the big screen and absolutely lifeless while SPEED looks incredibly polished and vibrant and alive.

Now, when I say that I think SKY CAPTAIN looked like "shit" I am referring to its final execution. I thought SKY CAPTAIN'S design work was fantastic and I didn't even mind the story (as a throwback to pulp era adventures it was basically okay). The problem with SKY CAPTAIN was that the final CGI execution was half-assed at best. A lot of that was due to the palette they used which had this truly awful "washed out" pastel look while SPEED (at least based on the trailers) clearly goes in the totally opposite direction. SPEED looks as colorful as anything could be, which helps give it a living cartoon hyper-reality feel.

And that was the big mistake with SKY CAPTAIN in my opinion. I don't know why it looked so shitty -- maybe because they just realized they only had so much time to do so much rendering to meet a release date. To be honest, SKY CAPTAIN would have been infinitely better if they had just done it in straight black and white. For crying out loud, have any of you ever actually WATCHED old Republic serials or any cliffhangers from any of the other companies of that time? Serials were shot on the fast and quick, but they often had AMAZINGLY CRISP black & white photography behind them and NOT a washed out look at all. Just because something's "old" or was in black & white doesn't mean it wasn't photographed in focus.

The reason I mentioned GODZILLA as well is because in the end they did the same fucked up thing that SKY CAPTAIN did. They decided that they would need a lot of CGI, but then someone came up with the brilliant idea that if it was RAINING all the time that would be an overlay SFX element that could help hide the fact that the final CGI rendering was not quite there, that they had to cut a few corners. And in the end (again in my opinion) much like SKY CAPTAIN that decision hurt GODZILLA as well. It also resulted in a film that literally looked like shit because every fucking scene was dark, wet, damp and it just brought down the whole feel of the film. And why did it look that way? Because the story demanded it? No. It looked that way for the fucked up reason of having to hide half-assed CGI work.

I agree with others about the "small things" we've already seen in the SPEED RACER trailers -- things like Matthew Fox nailing the totally stilted Racer X voice from the cartoon or the inclusion of things like the Mammoth Car or that sound effect whenever the Mach 5 leaps over something (again kept from the cartoon). Everything I've seen so far makes me think the W.Brothers really treated this as a labor of love AND had a blast making it, so I'm there opening day and I have a good feeling they won't let us down. They said they were out to make an all-ages fun family flick and I'm betting already they'll deliver on that promise.

Rated G?

How can this be rated G?? Wouldn't "intense action sequences" qualify it for PG?

That was a great post. More or less exactly what I was about to say. Cheers!

I think the real reason why SKY CAPTAIN (which I liked) failed was because... who the fuck is SKY CAPTAIN? It was too obscure, in a geeky way, to garner a following. Love it or hate it, everyone knows who SPEED RACER is, and those who don't, the younger audiences, will be introduced to the character and campy insanity through this movie. And, so far, it looks insanely awesome.

No way this is getting a G. The trailer alone shows that. Its too violent. I'd bet on a PG.
I also really liked Sky Captain.

I don't understand the hate. Sure, it bombed at the box office, but I felt the dreamy, overexposed look was appropriate. Man Ray in his films used to do something similar by putting some sort of gel over the film lens.

As far as Speed Racer goes, I hope everyone's right. I'll definitely see this thing in the theaters (this is the best preview we've seen yet). Still, I don't want to get my hopes up for fear of being disappointed.

Well written and reasonable. Still, I don't agree with your cartoon comparison simply because the Speed Racer movie uses live actors and thus demands a certain level of reality. It's quite retarded actually to take something like Speed Racer and try translating it in to a medium that adds nothing really. Do I really NEED to see John Goodman acting as Pops Racer? Somehow I doubt that bloated has-been has the actual lung capacity to read a page of dialogue in one, long hyper-winded sentance such as Pops used to do, and if he can't then what's the POINT? I used to LOVE the long, impossibly-dangerous rally races Speed would race in, crumbling cliffs, spewing lava, jumping ravines, but if you look at the stuff and it just looks obviously like computer generated cartoon then you might as well just animate a new cartoon feature because the fakee CG is just gonna piss me off. Check out the bridge crossing scene in Sorcerer, no Cg, no fakee, and tell me there's ever been a more gripping sequence set to film and then keep it in mind while CG Speed is flying all over and you're sitting there bored as hell.
Y'know, I'm really beginning to come around...

...to this bizarro aesthetic of the whole thing. I was sky-high on just the concept of the Wachowskis doing Speed Racer, and each casting tidbit only got me more psyched.

Then I saw the first teaser trailer.

Jesus-tap-dancing-Christ, what an abomination! Too weird, too bright, too day-glo-neon and the CG looked good for 1984, not 2008. I still don't like it that much.

But the damnest thing is, with each of these new trailers that comes out, I'm liking the look and feel more and more. I'm starting to get what others have said about the trippy live-action-anime look of the thing. Still don't know if I'm gonna be there opening day, but shit, if it doesn't look as good as Iron Man, it looks better than 90% of everything else out there! I think I'm back on board!

What has really won me over with this new trailer...

is the fact that the campy elements seem well calculated. The aforementioned Matthew Fox delivery is spot on and so is Ricci's corny yet strangely awesome "cool beans" line. Camp is a hard thing to pull off, but it seems the Wachowskis are very conscious of what they're trying to do.
I will say..

..I LOVE the small bit with Susan Sarandon, politics aside she looks to be awesome as Ma Racer, and I agree with all the Matt Fox kudos, I'm LOST biased but MAN is he nailing Racer X. My criticism comes more from the angle of the average meathead seeing it and what they'll think, personally I'm an old, OLD school fan and tho I have my reservations just the Mammoth Car alone will put my ass in a seat, I just hope it has that awesome, creepy trainhorn sound it blasts out to let you know your part in the race is OVER!

I watch plenty of non-Hollywood films myself, but that's not the point I'm making. I'm simply saying that Hollywood - with all its money power - has the potential to create great spectacle based movies with original visuals that we haven't seen before. No, I don't think 'Spy Kids' did what 'Speed Racer' is doing - at least not to this extent. Oh, and 'Casshern' sucked. It was like an overlong music video with no narrative to speak of. The special effects weren't the problem with that film. It was the crappy script. Luckily, the Wachowskis have shown with movies like 'Bound' that they can handle tight, mainstream movies.

You know who else says 'face'? The dog Brian on a cartoon. It's pretty funny. Sometimes he's this erudite snob, and other times he's licking his own privates. Pretty funny stuff. I actually like Family Guy, and Seth McFarlane's voice is pretty hilarious to me for some reason.

John McCain sounds like Mr. Herbert for Family Guy, which is why he won't win.
