Whoop-de-fucking-doo a Mad Max video game that is 20 years late from coming out. Here's an idea - Let me play in the role of Master Blaster where I need to take a shit to play the game - "Not shit, energyyyyyyy". Where are the details on Fury Road??? Is Bruce Spence coming back? Why not Mel have a cameo or is this Mad Max meet Logan's Run where no one lives beyond the age of 29.

I don't grasp the reasoning, a Mad max film that is supposed to take place decades after the last one and Mel is too old? eeeeeehhh.... okay? Don't get me wrong I love the Max Movies and I love Millers films, but yeah "there'll be a lot of CG" and no Mel Gibson? I call BS just give me stunt men in distopian fetish gear, car chases across the outback, and explosions... oh yeah and Mel Gibson and I'll call it Mad Max. Give me CG people flying through the air and crazy jumps, a 20 year old with fake grey, and I call it Speed Racer: Australia

It's worked recently with John Rambo, John McClane, Rocky Balboa, and it's bound to work with Indiana Jones. Come on MILLER, ask MEL back! As for the game..meh...sounds like it will be awesome...but really...you have to admit this is getting amusing. There is no reason to shoot this w/o Gibson. Unless he says no... then you BEG him to do it, or DON'T do it. There's a million Road Warrior knock-offs now. Just look at DOOMSDAY. What made MAD MAX, MAD MAX was Mel! If Rambo, Rocky, and Indiana Jones can be reprised, so can Mad Max. He's the most realistic and human of all these characters. Max doesn't need to be some great athlete. He drives a vehicle for most of the movie and occasionally fires a gun! You want a weather-worn post-apocalyptic hero? Cast a 50 year old. C'mon Miller! Wake up!

Anything else is ridiculous, and we all know it.

Stuntcock Mike's idea of Eric Bana is a great one, but he'd almost be better for a prequel, and I've had enough of those for one lifetime.

Call me nostalgic, but I want to see Mel rounding out Max's story, and Arnold as older and wiser King Conan.

The problem Hollywood seems to have is that it takes old properties that would be great to resolve, and they try to up the ante with over-the-top stupid CGI action, younger characters, and needless updates.

Taking the likes of Mel and Arnold along for one last ride would boost the star power, allow for a more human scale, and create opportunities for different types of action and more intimate violence.

But studios don't want that. They don't want to have to think, be challenged, be creative, or *be the ones who try something different*. They want to follow, like the money-addled cowars they are. They want hordes of video-game designers creating Cool Moments Of Spectacle left and right.

Meanwhile, none of us give a damn.

This Definitely Needs Mel

This is a sequel to get genuinely excited about, but without Mel, I really don't see the point. The character never really existed outside of the original trilogy, so it's hard to be excited about someone new taking over the role. Besides, Max is almost tailor-made for the kind of weary, older portrayal that characters like Rambo, McClane, and Indy have recently received.

Mel Gibson does not make a Mad Max movie the same way Clint Eastwood makes a Man With No Name movie. Mad Max could be anybody. He's not like Indiana Jones or Rambo, he's hardly as iconic as that. You guys are full of shit, you probably didn't even like Thunderdome to begin with, so just shut the hell up.

by BenBraddock

There is literally no other reason. MEL=MAX=MEL. The only reason we want to see Mad Max IV is to see what has happened to Max in the last two decades, and that means casting the same actor, Mel Gibson. Believe me, that move alone makes the movie instantly and IMMEASURABLY more interesting than whatever premise you'll cook up using a younger actor. Don't do a 'Hannibal Rising' here - nobody cares.

I was involved with Warthog back in 2003 when they were developing a Mad Max mission based combat driving game for the Xbox. The potential is massive. As for Fury Road the movie, stoked is an understatement, Mad Max 2 is on my desert island top ten, and fro what I've read and heard Brendon McCarthy's original script was super reverential to the best aspects of MM2/Road Warrior and delivered in every dept. Thes rest is down to Miller and his crew. I'd sooner Mel reprise his role (after all this is an era of old gipper action stars proving they can still kick some butt...albeit with a little more restraint and due care!) but I would pray that it's an Aussie in the lead, Eric Bana would be the perfect choice for me, after that Kiwi Karl Urban can pack the goods when he has a good director. Good news anyhoo, made my geek day.

He's already expressed his love of the series the series (any true antipodean does) he's a hairy arsed aussie, who can play hardcore badasses (Chopper, nuff said)posessed of top notch acting chops plus he's got the thousand yard stare nailed. If Mel won't creak out for this one (which is pretty clear from past interviews that he won't be donning his leg brace and sawn off again) it's got to be Bana.

by Vern
Mar 13th, 2008

Miller has said 1. the story isn't about what happens twenty years later or what happens when he gets older, it's just another Mad Max adventure 2. he missed his window in 2003 because Gibson is more interested in directing and doesn't really want to revisit it.

So while I do agree that it's too bad if they can't convince him to change his mind, I gotta completely disagree with this horse shit that he's "the only reason" to do it. Man, I want to see THE WORLD of Mad Max, that vicious, weird place that gets more detailed and weird each time we revisit it. To me that's the main reason for the movie, with cheap nostalgia being a nice bonus.

And as for the "no CGI" idea, gotta call bullshit on that too. Yes, I hope they will do the car stunts for real, but god damn, look at that city Miller made in his pig movie. You don't want to see him apply his mastery of modern technology to the world Mad Max? You're crazy. (You're mad, I guess.)

Okay, I agree, it has to look organic, don't make it a video game. (Save that for the video game.) But I don't want to see him just try to recreate what he did when he was young. I want to see him move forward and apply his new tricks to Mad Max.

Perfectly stated DocPazuzu. How these heavyweights can overlook what's happening in Hollywood right now is beyond me. People WANT to see their old favs back in the saddle. They don't care if they are old, in fact they want stories which use the age like a fine wine. The age brings a potential richness to the characters we all know and love. We want to see how they cope with the apocalypse at 50...at 60!

I've been dying to see a max sequel since thunderdome, but it's gotta star Mel Gibson. Not just a cameo, but the whole fucking movie. Him being older now has zero negative impact. He's still max, and if he managed to live in the wasteland to 50, he's all the more badass so watch out. Saying he's too old to play the part is moronic. Whoever is saying that should be off this project, because it shows a VERY limited imagination.

...makes a good point. Another reason these older stars are still accepted is because the fans have aged along with them. So ideas that sounded absurd 20 years ago (a 60-year-old Rocky?!) suddenly resonate in unexpected ways. It's also a lot more interesting to see the same actor return, because it forces everyone to approach the material in different manner. I'd rather have a script that Mel *couldn't* have played 20 years ago, rather than one he could've *only* played 20 years ago. The former seems like the best way for Miller to avoid repeating himself, and truly advance the series as far as possible.

That black Ford Falcon V8 was the coolest, hoping he gets paired up with some insanely pimped out black death machine, some neo-70's style muscle coupe. Thanks to McCarthy's Fury Road script Max is back where he belongs...behind the wheel. Salivating at the prospect of both game and movie, gagging for more scoops. This is what Miller fans really want!

We've had a comic character like Batman change faces many times. (BTW I don't think this has helped the series of films.) Characters from novels, like Jack Ryan change actors. But, this isn't like those other characters, because the character of Max is completely original. There was no other source material. No novel or comicbook he was based on. Mel Gibson created Max from scratch. Think about it... How many lines were written for Max? Not many, the other 80 or 90% of that character is all Mel's contribution. For me, there's nothing more painful than watching another actor try to step into a role that another great actor defined. I immediately go into the film weary and disconnected from the world. (Which, while I'm at it, is a heavily populated world. Miller created an entire post-apocalyptic genre with Mad Max. And while Miller would do an excellent job expanding it, we've seen it many times and many ways before.) The MAD MAX movies are my favorite film series of all time. Like another poster said, I check this site specifically for news on a new film. Well, that and a new CONAN film... Which, btw would be great with an older Arnold but could exist with a new actor because it's possible to be more CONAN than Arnold's Conan, by referencing a huge catalog of character history. But imagine Indiana Jones w/o Harrison Ford? Rocky w/o Stallone? Mad Max... he's all Mel.
Vern, I love you and all...
by DocPazuzu
Mar 14th, 2008
07:33:17 AM
...but I'm with Sinister Guido and others here regarding Mel as Max. I do agree with you when it comes to wanting to see an expanded post-apocalyptic "Maxworld", but if they can't get Mel to do Max, then I'd prefer a story set in that world with completely new characters. However, barring Mel's disinterest in the project, there is no reason whatsoever that an older Mel wouldn't work in a new Mad Max film.

In fact, since these movies more or less are westerns, it's actually even BETTER with an older, grizzled Max coming to terms with a changing world. There are tons of classic westerns dealing with older characters and their problems in a changing world, The Wild Bunch to name but one.

I think a Mad Max without Mel would be a horrible, horrible mistake.

Think of it this way, Vern: Under Siege 3 with Gerard Butler as Casey Ryback. See what I'm getting at here?

He doesn't need the money, or the physical demands that such a role would require. I'm just glad I picked up an HD DVD of Road Warrior for 8 bucks yesterday at Best Buy..
Mad Max is not James Bond or Batman
by Prossor
Mar 14th, 2008
03:42:34 PM
There is no previous incarnation of Max like there is James Bond or Batman from their literary origins, which is why many actors can take a shot at it (connery, moore, brosnan or west, keaton, bale). But characters created first onscreen are forever attributed to their lowly real-life clones. No one else is Mad Max but Mel Gibson just like no one else can be Indiana Jones but Ford, no one but Bruce Willis can be John McClane, etc.
