I'm pretty sure everyone hated Spider-Man 3. But it's pretty clear Raimi's heart wasn't in it and he's still a fine filmmaker.

SM3 can be blamed on Marvel for the inclusion of Venom and an convoluted plot and Raimi for not standing up for himself after two successful outings under his belt. X3 (or X-Claws as I refer to it) was all 20th Century Fox.

Well I gotta disagree with you, I really like DARKMAN and THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. You mentioned A SIMPLE PLAN. Even the movie he did with the Coen Brothers that they all disowned (CRIMEWAVE) is pretty damn funny despite all the studio interference. And the SPIDER-MAN movies are pretty fun although personally I'll be glad if he leaves that big budget studio shit behind him.

But those are all just icing on the cake when you are the guy who directed THE EVIL DEAD, EVIL DEAD 2 and ARMY OF DARKNESS. For my money EVIL DEAD 2 is second only to AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON for the perfect balance of horror and humor. And in certain moods the first one seems even more solid. ARMY OF DARKNESS is my least favorite of the three but undeniably has some classic scenes and moments, it's a fun movie and means alot to the younger people who saw that one first.

And THAT is the big deal about Raimi. Most directors don't have as many movies worth discussing as we have mentioned in this talkback. When you have that many beloved cult movies under your belt OF COURSE you're gonna get some respect around here, and if you don't there's something wrong. Obviously the guy is not untouchable, in fact I worry that he has lost what made him so great in those lower budget days, but you're seriously gonna give Jon Favreau more respect because "it seems like he will do a good job"? Let's have a sense of history here bud. Moriarty is merely giving Raimi a little credit for having entertained us for almost 30 years.

my post didn't work because the system won't print the brackets. To create a space, you need to put a "p" inside the characters you get when you type shift-comma and shift-period (brackets, I guess).

Dude, Vern is right. Raimi is a true original. He's churned out studio junk lately but he's not the product of a studio. Beneath that suit, he's still an indie at heart. I've been a critic of Raimi's lately because Ghost House has consistently pumped out a string a mediocre to crappy horror movies and unoriginal remakes and I personally think they duck a lot of criticism because fortunately for that company, Platinum Dunes unfairly takes a lot of the heat and Raimi is who he is to that genre. I know the guy isn't any more responsible than the writers and directors and listless actors of those films (cough, Grudge 2), but still, he's overseeing the development of these films and taking a producer credit and a putting out a brand whose product leaves something to be desired. If you wanna hold a 'grudge' against the guy for something like that, or for allowing Peter Parker to boogie down in Spider-Man 3, then that's your right as a paying customer and you're certainly entitled to your opinon. That said, this project, Monster Zoo, sounds undeniably cool, and it's not cool to come in and take some potshots and throw some below the belt punches at a guy who's entertained us for 30+ years, and who we should all be grateful is now in the club of directors who get to spend the studios' summer tentpole kind of money. Remember, A Simple Plan is an incredible movie, my #2 of '98 behind American History X and in front of Saving Private Ryan. The Evil Dead is one of two movies I had to shut off as a kid because it was too scary. Of course I mustered the courage to watch it the next day, during the day time, but still, that's a testament to its effectiveness. Darkman is the shit and the first two Spider-Man movies were pretty damn good, and certainly better than likeminded fare such as Superman Returns and X3. Raimi isn't perfect. It's impossible to be perfect in this business. But I think he's on the right track. I'm giving Drag Me to Hell the benefit of the doubt and this project, even if it does skew a little younger, sounds, as I said, neat-o. Don't hate the playa, hate The Grudge 2 and move on like I have... almost.

I love his style, and some of his humor- but he's way to Reaganist nuclear family Jesus religious for me. The interstellar confirmation of alien christ was heavy handed, and undermined what could have been a fun sci-fi story in Creature-Tech. And the "let's give marriage a try" or "jesus dinosaur saves" just felt dead to me in Tomy-saurus. Besides, that story was much better told in Iron Giant anyhow. So, where does Monster Zoo hide the Jesus?

Why all the hate for Superman Returns?

I just don't get it. I agree that it's a very flawed movie. Kate Bosworth is certainly not the best Lois Lane and the super-kid was a big misstep (also, they should have at least called him Christopher, not Jason). At first, I didn't like Singer's idea of trying to continue with the Donner/Reeve universe. I wanted a brand new version of Superman, but we all knew what to expect months before the film came out. And when it finally did, I really liked it. I liked the idea of Superman, the most powerful creature on Earth, not being able to be with his family; having to compromise, despite his incredible ability. It reminded me of the kind of clean, wholesome blockbuster we had back in the 80's. It reminded me of early Spielberg, Zemeckis and, of course, Richard Donner. As for the lack of so-called action, if you wanna see two guys slug it out in the air, go see Matrix Revolutions. Superman Returns is not that kinda film. And as we all know, judging by the Singer's X-men films, the first one is just the warm-up.
I was gonna guess Harry Knowles.

With NO budget and Much Talent he gave us the Evil Dead! That might not mean much to the torture soaked youthPorn of today but when I was a nipper the Evil Dead was Like, well it was like NOTHING you'd ever seen!!!

Now you have guys doing Saw and Hostel and all the admitedley creepy Asian stuff but back then The Evil Deads were like bottled fucking lightning for horror nuts!

I liked a Simple Plan and Darkman, I don't think they're as amazing as folks make out and Evil Dead 3 and The Quick and The Dead are entertaining but he knocked Spiderman 1 & 2 out the park! especially the Dr Oc scene in the operating theatre which gave me thrilling flashbacks of Evil Dead 2 greatness in a PG! I guess that's why I was so disapointed with Spidey 3 cos it's a step too far in every respect, too much plot, too many characters, and way too goofy it just imploded up it's own greedy franchised ass and i Hope it never comes back!

Anyway I think it's fine to bitch about a classic director if he's now constantly dropping the ball these days like Copolla, Lucas, even Romero who's had 2 recent chances with Land and Diary of the Dead and screwed me twice over so if Raimi can produce the good again after just one Spidey fuck-up then that's cool! he must've been thoroughly sick of the sight of Peter fucking Parker by No.3 anyway! I know I was

Don't forget kids! Raimi directed Evil Dead, just like Carpenter directed The Thing, Landis directed American werewolf and Romero gave us Night of the Living Dead, Raimi doesn't seem to have that bad a track record by comparisson to those guys!

As for his horror producing, why the fuck not!? I know it's not him directing them so i don't watch em and couldn't care less! I never liked many of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents' either but I didn't get mad at him!

Why all the hate for Superman Returns? Well, my friend--sorry, not to shut you down--but I do believe that this hatred has been more than amply explained by the haters of Superman Returns, myself included, in just about every superhero-related talkback here for the last two years straight. Perhaps, for your further edification, all of this hatred could be compiled by the esteemed editors of AICN into a largeish tome entitled "Why the Hate for Superman Returns." Glad you enjoyed yourself, though.

I've read a few of those, actually. Most of them seem to make some solid points as to why the film isn't "great". They have yet to point out why it's "bad". But I guess that's the notorious geek perspective: it's either great or bad. Not much room for any middle ground here. Hey, it takes all kinds, right?

I haven't seen any remakes of Kurosawa's work. I thought the original Pulse was one of the worst films I've ever seen so I avoided the shitty-looking remake. I've also seen Seance and was bored to tears. But Cure would make a great American movie. There are some plot holes and flaws in logic that could be taken care of. I think it could be the next Se7en.

I dunno man. Sometimes the circumstances of the screening affect how you digest the film. I remember seeing it at 10am on a rainy day. It was far too early, I was tired and cranky and I'd heard good things about the film and Kurosawa but I was so mind-numblingly bored by it. It wasn't scary. The characters were all mindless twits. I literally can remember standing up near the end and saying quite outloudly 'I have no idea what the fuck is going on.' I remember sighing every 5 minutes because I couldn't wait for it to end. Everything just felt really familiar. I believe it was released in 05 after originally coming out in 03, so there was plenty of buzz and the remake had already been announced and then the movie SUCKED! Maybe my expectations were too high. I'm a big fan of Asian horror but I couldn't stand that one, sorry Vern. I hated it. But you're the straight-to-DVD expert so I'm sure you've seen many worse films. I just remember Pulse being one of the worst theatrical experiences I've ever had. I was alone so I couldn't even laugh about it with a friend at the time. Just dreary and depressing and worst of all not the least bit scary. Jumpscares are bullshit.

I also am very surprised that you didn't like Pulse. Granted, Kurosawa films aren't the fastest moving things around and dependent on ones mindset going in but I thought it was actually scary. The reason I don't think Cure s/b remade is that I don't think there is a studio that would allow a U.S. released film to have anywhere near the slow pace or texture that the original had. Stay away from Kurosawa's Bright Future that really ups the WTF factor.
