Ratner is a paint-by-numbers director: with a poor script the film is doomed, when surrounded by good people or a reasonable script he can be okay. He has no style and is a dull, uninteresting director but he's nor Paul WS Anderson train-wreck bad. And the reason studios keep giving himwork is he comes in on budget, in time and generally makes money - and that is all the soulless studios care about. Don't kid yourself there's an executive in the world that values the artistry over the bottom line!

by reflecto
Mar 11th, 2008

was to do it like a gritty road movie since the kids are on the run for the bulk of the story. Like early Gus Van Sant or even Into The Wild with superpowers. That's the only way to differentiate it from X-Men. James Marsden or Patrick Wilson would make a great Magnus.
Comic Books to Film

There does seem to be this trend now to just make a comic book into a movie, whether you're a struggling studio, actor, Director or whatever. I'm not against this entirely but it is going to get tired very soon, if it hasn't already. I would just like to see something amazing and original that will inspire me. Unfortunately it hasn't happened for a very long time.

These books were hot for about a year in the very early 90's, because they printed like 5 copies of each issue.

what a bunch of wet blankets...

As for the Rat, I think this site should stop posting news about him. First: no one cares about his movies, even the potentially good projects he will eventually ruin. And second: posting stories about him is just morbid curiosity, waiting for the TBers to bash him. Not unlike stepping down near a car wreck.

HARBINGER and J. Shooter Rule!! Ratner, not so much
by Dax_Bladerunner

HARBINGER was a huge hit in the early 90's. Especially for an independent company such as Valiant. If it wasn't a hit, then people would not have known about it at all, or still know about it today. Unfortunately Valiant went to major hell when Acclaim took over.

I've always wanted to see this made into a movie and am shocked to see it happening. I'd prefer a different director after what Ratner and the writers did to X3. They completely missed the mark.

The other issue is that HEROES and HARBINGER are very, very similar. That can be a good or bad thing. I believe the HEROES hype can definitely help with HARBINGER, but it has to be done right. If Ratner has one incling of common sense about him, he will get Jim Shooter to help co-write/assist in the script to some degree.

I loved the HARBINGER comic as a kid. Peter Stanchek was the man. Here's hoping for the best.

Forget Ratner - Worst Comic Ever
by Mr. Winston
Mar 11th, 2008

That's the problem here, not Ratner being attached. If you read this in the 90s and didn't think it was one of the worst written rip-offs in the history of story, go back now and take a look. HARBINGER is absolute shit. I can't believe any entity, much less a major studio, would buy this donkey. It just goes to show that there are no bounds on stupidity. What's even funnier is that this property has been lamely offered - like a set of encyclopedias written by Downs kids - into every studio 3-4 times a year since the late 90s and it's been rejected and rejected and rejected and rejected. I suppose someone finally got tired of saying, "No."

I Have About Half the Valiant Comics Released

I just ran into my complete run of Harbinger a while back. I think I'll pull it for a re-read, although thinking back the Valiant stuff was only a bit better than the crap that Marvel and Image were putting out in the early 90s. In fact I think the "Deathmate" crossover pretty much killed the company. X-O Manowar and Harbinger were my favourites from the Valiant universe.
Magnus Robot Fighter

Where's the Magnus, Robot Fighter movie? Too bad the Wachowskis already did the Matrix or they could do it. I think, done right, it could be one of the all-time sci-fi film classics. First requirement: minimal use of CGI.

It seems to me that this proposed movie will possibly be a NBC Heroes clone. One of the main characters is very very Sylar like, in that he can take over peoples abilities. Like Harbinger. There is also possible similarites to the 1970's Kirk Douglas movie "The Fury". Generic, formulaic, right up Brett "i am shit Ratner's street to be honest.

He can't take over people's abilities. All he can do is activate them - other than that he is a powerful telepath/telekinetic. He was also bisexual, a fact Jim Shooter only hinted at before being fired.
