I never liked the cartoon and I just can't stop thinking about that game f-zero for the super nintendo when I see these trailers. I'll give it to that brothers that they have def captured the look of a kinetic cartoon, but it just doesn't work for me.

Looks exciting. But really CGI worlds are a bad excuse, if the CGI isn't done right it's distracting and fake. And it looks like the CGI isn't done right when the cars are bashing into each other and stuff. If people just want to see a cartoon IRL then this is probably going to accomplish that, we will see if it succeeds or fails

I swear I'm not trying to be patronizing, but what the HELL about this movie/story is it that people are at all interested in? I can't for the life of me figure out how the cartoon could be seen as anything but stupid, and while the visuals for the movie look admittedly incredible...this just feels of utter crap in every other realm.

We might have to create a new Hall of Fame for the Emile Hirsch face that reads "Holy shit, I was in INTO THE WILD and now I'm talking to a monkey".

Also, congrats to the W Bros for turning one of the alternatively hottest chicks in the world into an ugly guy. Great call there.

WOW! Goddamn! I can't wait to see this. My inner eternal 5 year old is weeping with joy. Those who don't get it were no doubt born too late. I LOVED this show when I was a really little kid. It burned a hole in my psyche. I imagine this will be a huge hit amongst really young kids (figure like 5-10) and nostalgic adults. Everyone else will "hate" it, I'm sure (while seeing it in the theatre 17 times in a row and buying the collectors dvd with which to study exactly how much they "hated" it). But everyone else = rageaholic teenagers and arrogant undergrads, neither of whom rate as worth paying attention to.

Finally a filmmaker got the tone of a property just right
by IndustryKiller!
Mar 9th, 2008
08:56:50 PM
Unfortunately that property is Speed Racer. Look I'm sure this is going to be the absolute best Speed Racer movie anyone could possibly make. The world looks really great and its awesome the Wachowskis are using CG to create a tone and an atmosphere and a vision unto it's own rather than lazily using it to ape something that could be done better in set form. Too often today, rather than creating a world of their own, filmmakers try to shambolically put the fantastic into the real world and end up looking like assholes as they spend entire portions of their movies trying to explain it away to laughable effect. The Wachowskis are obviously smarter than that. I just don't think that I care about a movie based on the mediocre Speed Racer cartoon. Maybe it was a little before my time, but even as a kid it never held up to the much better 80's properties of the day. It's a crying fucking shame that it couldn't have been the Wachowskis that did Transformers or G.I. Joe.

Speed Racer Was Campy AND Hardcore
by LaserPants
Mar 9th, 2008
09:05:36 PM
There are several deaths in the opening credits alone! Seriosuly, as campy as Speed racer is/was, the body count was way high. all of those 80s cartoons were all squeaky clean. Even in GI Joe you never saw anyone die and they were in a war! Wtf? Speed Racer easily outranks most 80s properties. Maybe not Star Blazers are Robotech, but easily outranks Gi Joe, Transformers, and the like. Not to get me wrong, cause I love me my Transformers too.

In practice and action SPeed Racer prolly was more hardcore, but the characters just werent as cool. Nowhere in SPeed Racer did you have anything as engaging and cool as Snake Eyes or Cobra Commander from GI Joe or the Megatron/Starscream dynamic from Transformers. I mean I could go on and on about either of those shows. There were just too many cool characters cycling out of both those shows for a toon about race cars too be better. But then to each his own.

Dude, there were tons of great characters and situations in Speed Racer -- the core relationship between Speed and Racer X, the chick who's dad puts her in the crazy haunted death car, her crazy dad, the weird ass Egyptian magic shit, the scorpian thingee in the desert where Speed and some Arabian prince hate each other at first and then have to work together to survive, all kinds of political spy intrigue and crazy cop / ninja / evil corporate guys / terrorist groups, etc. stuff! OH! And lest we forget the one where Speed gets strung out on speed! LIke this cars engine called the X7 that is like a drug. It was amazing! He totally loses his shit, ODs, goes into withdrawl. All GI Joe and Transformers amounted to was really cool toy commercials. And I liked those shows too, but they can't hold a candle to the gonzo insanity of Speed Racer. In my opinion, of course, to each his own and all that. God I'm high. Time to go to bed. Can barely type anymore.

The second international trailer was better, but this is really not doing it for me. I think I'm probably going to hate it. I'm a fan of the original cartoon and I guess I was hoping for something a little more, well, traditional. The blatant fakey CG and the Mach 6 are gonna kill this movie for me, I think.

That's probably okay, though, since it's clear they didn't make this movie for me or people like me.

LaserPants...Deaths in Speed Racer cartoons
by Quake II
Mar 9th, 2008
09:55:17 PM
are off the charts. These guys that say the family friendly Transformers and GI Joe are more hardcore have never seen an uncut Speed Racer toon. There is even blood in many of the episodes. In the two part episode The Assassins, Racer X kills 25 bad guys with a machine gun as blood sprays out. And yes, even the opening credits had fiery car crashes and deaths. In fact, I have introduced my 6 year old to the old Speed Racer toons and I was shocked at how many gunshot deaths they have in the series. Several in many episodes. When the movie comes out and they start showing Speed Racer cartoons again, they will be edited. Buy the DVD's now before they get hacked up by censors.

how is "durrrr it looks like a video game" any kind of negative criticism? If you use that line you're A) old B) don't know what a video game looks like C) a moron parrot or D) just dumb. You see something with CGI and all you got is "it looks like a video game?" I wish video games looked this good. All the haters have is this vapid, meaningless criticism, "heh heh huh one of the Wachowskis got a sex change" or the ol' reliable dogmatic "the Matrix sequels suxord! wooT!" Darfur is right, the problem with CGI is that if done poorly the suspension of disbelief IS shattered. And by poorly I mean that it has to have some substance... some type of organic feel where the audience (being of organic matter and universe)can believe that hey, this kinetic action has consequences to one character or another. Unfortunately, as seen in this trailer, that doesn't seem to be the case. I'm not saying it's going to suck... it's lame to judge a flick by its trailer... but my hopes and expectations are low.

Cars flipping around and defying gravity would have been much more organic had they managed to find a way to shoot them as real as possible. Look at the Wachowskis' amazing effects efforts with Matrix Reloaded in that highway sequence. It was damn near photorealistic (to bad the rest of that flick was bloated nonsense... but it looked great). THAT is what is missing with SPEED RACER thus far. THAT was what was missing with the SW Prequel trilogy (besides good scripts, solid direction, etc.).

The direction they took here, I don't know. It would have been more badass had they gone for an organic looking production and action/stunt design. If I saw a variation of the Matrix Reloaded highway sequence, but with the race cars having the otherworldy defiance of gravity showcased in the martial arts scenes of that trilogy, THEN I'd be pumped. Now... not so much. Time will tell though once the movie comes out.

And people say the Star Wars prequel CG was shit?

It's not so much the CG as how the ultra-saturated palette just takes me out of it (especially in that dreadful-looking shot of a desert race). Makes it look like a video game, where nothing has any weight.

That's the eternal problem with CG--the lack of "weight" or presence. (I can hardly watch Gollum at this point, it bugs me more with each viewing.) Is anyone closer to solving it, or is it simply that our eyes ultimately can't be fooled by unreality? In a way, that would be reassuring.

What seems to be failing in this, as least based on these quick little trailers, is that it seems like they're trying to achieve Actual Drama with the actors, but pure candy with the visuals. It's hard to see how they can possibly make it gel. (Remember Dick Tracy? Ugh.)

But I'm splitting hairs. Kudos to them for trying something this whacked-out, even if it fails.

This is for every kid (now adult) who grew up with Speed Racer, remembers the Hot Wheel Sizzlers, and rode his Big Wheel or Green machine around pretending it was the Mach 5! They should just release the Blu-ray version the same day as the movie, so we can all buy it in the lobby after the show's over. And by the way: my vote's for Trailer 2!

I was a teenager when these shows were on, maybe I was just a tad too old for them, but even then, they never seemed like anything but elaborate toy commercials, I couldn't watch them. I always liked Speed Racer, especially Racer X, I always wished it was about him instead. So far this movie doesn't do much for me, I'll probably see it because I love Christina Ricci, and Matthew Fox is perfect casting for Racer X.

What is this shit people are talking about bad CGI or bad effects work ruining the suspension of disbelief? Anybody ever seen a Ray Harryhausen flick? He is a master, but do his stop motion creatures look real? Of course they don't. Do they take you out of the movie? I hope not. Special effects look fake because they are fake, no matter how "photorealistic" they can be. Use your fucking imaginations, people.

Matchbox

02:24:41 AM
I've been trying to figure out why I like these new trailers when I didn't care for the first one. I think it's the racing. In the first one it felt very video-gamey. The cars didn't feel like they existed in a real world with real physics. When you're a kid watching Speed Racer, it might be a cartoon but you're imagining a real car race. If it turned "real" you'd want a race that even while crazy things were happening at least seemed to pretend the laws of physics were in play. So then... what is different about these trailers. Then it hit me...

Matchbox cars

That's why these new trailers kick more ass. Seeing how they handle the cars it hit me. They do look a bit video gamish but the vibe of the cars, how they move, the weight of them... matchbox cars. As a kid that is the car physics that work into your mind watching Speed Racer. I dunno about the loop-de-loop tracks they throw into the movie. Yes, Matchbox used those but those were actually secondary to the experience to the cars colliding or flipping over each other. There is a shot in the one trailer of a car launching towards camera where you can see the tires spinning in slow motion where... I dunno, it hit me. That's a hard plastic little matchbox tire. Looking at it, in my head I could feel that hard little wheel on my finger.

That's why this movie might work. Evoking video game crap would kill it. But if they can put you in the mind set of being 7 years old, watching speed racer while playing Matchbox cars - much different from video game playing - except instead they make Speed and Matchbox REAL... that could be pretty sweet.

It didn't work with the flintstones and I can't see it working here. Fine bring cartoons into the real world, and get real people to play em. People forget what made The Matrix so good was a compelling underlying story, the visuals were just the icing on the cake. I really don’t need to see two hours of neon colored cars doing slow motion flips in mid-air. This isn’t going to bomb, but I don’t think it’s going to be a hit either.

This looks like awesome fun! Ladies and gentlemen, those of you who especially must be really really fucking old and dead corpses to not have some excitement for this... fuck off and die, seriously... The CGI looks fake? No fucking shit! The whole thing is supposed ot look surreal... Do you fuckers visit a museum and look at Salvador Dali's work and go, "Oh boy, this isn't grounded in reality at all... it looks like fucking shit, I should've saved my museum fee... I wish these surrealist artist would've used actual models and proportions for their objects... why can't everyone stick with camera photography instead of this fake looking paint shit." That's what you sound like and it's similar to the sound of gas escaping your crevices... You can't film loop de loops and other shit with live action, and even if you could it would look way more boring and mundane... Speed Racer will sell precisely because it looks so cool and colourful! The post production compositors must've had the most fun with their job than they've ever had in their lives! And I'll be there for this one on IMAX! The rest of you can stay at home and watch reality on NASCAR and animal documentaries, I hear they have many on monkies too! And Jinxo nailed it on the head! That's exactly how I imagined my car races as I played with hot wheels as a kid! Hell I've never even watched speed racer but I can totally get into what they're aiming for! Then again I thoguht Sky Captain was going to be awesome but it was horrible to sit through and I couldn't continue watching it... Speed Racer gets a pass because it IS a simplistic cartoon and one goes into it knowing not to expect fuckin Shakespeare...but to simply eat popcorn, enjoy the shiny objects, and be entertained by a simple plot. Okay, here's why I'm nervous, Moriarty...I'll quantify it exactly for you. The shots are spastic, and this movie seems to be more about style than substance and is falling into that lavish overplayed 'George Lucas' CGI rather than other folks usage of CGI to make everything look alien...The cars dueling by flipping around? Car Fu kicks ass. But cars having a sword fight? Way not kick ass. It looks fucking silly. And that's why I'm nervous...CGI+An Out There Concept+Silly shit like cars having a swordfight = Micturatingbenjamin doesn't think this will be another 'Matrix'.
And what precisely is this 'concept' of CGI node?
by Johnno
Mar 10th, 2008
11:39:42 AM
To me it's just a tool like paint to bring to life something you imagine. Since when is CGI supposed to only be photorealistic? Since when is it not allowed to blend the unrealistic in with the realistic? Again, visit a museum, look at some creative photography, look at some illustrations by artists, designers and even marketing! It may not look real, but it CAN look cool and trippy! If that isn't what you like, well to each their own... I personally love it! Heck I love things that are real, things that are cartoons and even things that blend the two! Was Gene Kelly dancing on screen with Jerry mouse real? Was Roger Rabbit realistic??? Fuck no! but it was well put together and entertaining and awesome! As long as it's well executed enough to enjoy, it can be appreciated thoroughly! Either you have ridiculously high standards or you've just got tunnel vision as to what CGI ought to be. Nintendo 64??? You exaggerate way too damn much... have you even looked at a 64 game lately? Or is your eye sight and memory getting to you in your old age? "CGI back in our day was done with real people and model box cars and stop motion puppets and clever cut aways and angles so the audience could use their imagination to fill in the things we could never physically show dagnammit! Everyone wanted to keep it real and that's just the way I likes it."

It's okay to think this looks lame...
by kevred
Mar 10th, 2008
01:30:33 PM
...and it's okay to think it looks great. What's objectively lame is to reflexively insult someone else for having a different opinion. For example, the poster above who seems to like fantasizing that he's a skinny model/actress has been on quite an insulting tear in the talkbacks of late, which says more about him than the targets of his rants.

I guess one of the problems I have with most CGI is that it's an example of people (studios, producers, directors, others as the case may be) seemingly obsessed with the technology over the substance. It's gone from masterful uses (in films like the original Jurassic Park) to a dime-a-dozen crutch in garbage like Van Helsing. It's allowed filmmakers to make their films look even more dated in a more efficient and spectacular way.

Someone above brought up older special effects like Harryhausen's, and how CGI is just more of the same. But in critical ways, it's *not* the same. Practical effects, no matter how cheap, have a presence that our eyes understand. CGI has its uses, which are most effective when subtle or blended with actual reality. But these days, it's often used as a shortcut that cheapens the experience for viewers.

I predict that TRON will be the last film whose CG effects will be looked back on with fond nostalgia. Everything we're seeing these days will just look stupid and primitive, and unlike, say, Harryhausen or Gene Kelly with the mouse, devoid of the all-important direct hand of the creator. Sorry, clicking a mouse doesn't count.

Bro...look at it again, it's a Ben-Hur, sword vs. shield fight. There's parry, dodge, spin, ha!, thrust-ing going on there.

Upon a second viewing, it's got me jazzed to see..right after taking a few mind bashing shots of absinthe, a few 'shrooms and watching it in IMAX. This will be fun, but again, I don't think it's going to affect the films that come after it in the same way the Matrix did (for both good and ill)...It does look like an impressionistic art piece, but if the Wachowskis actually direct instead of produce...this might be okay.

I can be nervous because of this shot right? ---> http://tinyurl.com/2gruvd

Looks average with a high gloss coat of paint...

I will say that the Mach 5 has all the cool shit from the cartoon, but I miss the yock-yock-yock sound from launching itself into the air. Also, I hope there's more than one full race...you know instead of a 'Karate Kid' "You're The Best" / montage sequence of Speed winning a bunch of races. Still concerned...but very, very hopeful!

IT'S THER!!! They muted it down a lot for the trailer..or did a 'Bayformers' thing with the sound, mixing it in with a bunch of other noises...but it's there...Hmmm...Based on that, I'm still ambivalent. But, they kept the noise...and the Racer X thing was dopesauce.

Does anyone know the song playing at the end of the second trailer. Right after Trixie Says "Speed Racer, what are you thinking?". It sounds so epic...trying to download it but can't find it. This movie has grown on me and for all people who are talking about how the dialog sucks and the colors are too...colorful...WATCH THE CARTOON and you'll see its an homage to that damn it. Try to keep up, idiot. Let's say, for the sake of this argument, that I am the actual actress Milla Jovovich. Do you really expect me to be hurt or offended that some anonymous person on an obscure website called me anorexic or a bitch? Me being a person who is obviously sucessful, will continue to be sucessful for a least a few more years, and whom you recognize by name immediately? You would without a doubt not say anything to me in person, much less anything derogatory. The only thing that lets you behave the way you do is your anonminity. Hence, you're a sad, little man. And that's only IF i am actually Jovovich. And what if I'm not? If I'm some guy or girl posting under a borrowed name, how is insulting the person or body of work by said person going to be offensive in any way? It's not, it's just stupid, it's reaching, because you've got nothing. You can't attack the content because you're not smart enough, so you go for the ad hominem attack, the refuge of the true moron. The worst part about being you is that you drink your own Kool-aid, to use a popular cliche. You'rea rude, thoughtless little pig, but hey, keep owning yourself. It's hilarious.

I don't know anything about Speed Racer, but this looks like it could be fun, like Transformers did. I will suspend my disbelief, stfu and just try and enjoy some dumb summer fun. Something spectacular, maybe take a date, just to enjoy the spectacle. There is no way it can be worse than Transformers showing us the SECDEF running around shooting robots with a 12-gauge and some "programmer" contacting the Air Force with a commodore 64... and even calling in a strike package. The Wachowski guys worked hard on this, so I am gonna hope it does not suck and take a leap of faith. But so far it reminds me of Pixar's "Cars". A bunch of cars racing on tracks and hopping around. Anyway, good evening!

What I Always Loved Most About "Speed Racer"
by uglyMood
Mar 10th, 2008
09:59:28 PM
Confession: I'm old enough to have seen "Speed Racer" as a kid when it first came out, but didn't actually catch an episode until the mid-nineties. I fell in love with it immediately. The best thing about the show was that it takes place in a completely gonzo alternate reality where entertainment is dominated by road races where murderous drivers try to off each other on tracks designed by psychotic sadists. They even ran one race through a field of live volcanoes, for God's sake! So the real pull of the show, for me, at least, was the utterly bizarre society in which it takes place, and it looks like this film is going to focus on precisely that aspect. I was afraid they were going to "real world" it, which would have been a disaster. Oh, and I will officially give Matrix 3 a full pardon if John Goodman does at least one scene where he's angry and delivering dialog with his eyes squinted shut and hopping from side to side on each foot while the opposite arm comes up in a fist. If you've seen the original show (or the hilarious "Dexter's Laboratory" episode where they parodied "Speed Racer"), you'll know what I mean. This movie looks like a pure blast.

I think what Node is saying
by TerryMalloy
Mar 10th, 2008
10:33:12 PM
Is that generally...in a movie that is supposed to be set in the real world...the effects (whether it be CGI, Matte Paintings, models, whatever) should feel photo-realistic and not take us out of the movie. I don't think his argument holds water for this particular movie. In Speed Racer, the world is insane. It's the world of racing. Physics are defied! So the CGI may not appeal to your aesthetic taste, but it does fit in this movie because the Wachowski's embraced it.

I think what Albertson/Milla are trying to say is that people irrationally attack CGI while at the same time defending older techniques that can be even less effective/realistic. They make the point that realism is overrated and there are other ways of telling stories/creating art.

In point of fact, CGI will be the tool that will allow film to move beyond its realistic form. Now every frame of film is a palette from which you can create art unrestricted by actual geography/laws of nature. Certainly there were and still are other techniques that can do this, but I think CGI is the most powerful in its potential.

based on the original anime. For those that have never seen the show: Racer X never changed his expression and was a kick ass mystery man with few words. He also beat the shit out of anyone who fucked with Speed. Sometimes he would kill people who fucked with Speed (who is his younger brother). The voice may be hard to get used to but it is accurate. This may be the most accurate toon-to-movie ever made. The Wachowski's have an amazing eye for detail and it looks like they watched the original episodes frame by frame to get the details down. I also noticed a "ghost" image of the red Mach 4 as Speed makes a turn in the Mach 5. Strange.

style over substance?
by drave117
Mar 11th, 2008
10:45:53 AM
OF COURSE it's style over substance! The version of the cartoon most of us grew up with didn't have any substance to begin with! Sure, maybe the original Japanese version did, but it got lost along the way. The version of Speed Racer that hit American airwaves was spastic, surreal, pointless, deeply weird, and a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. It wasn't popular because it was actually GOOD; it was popular because, through sheer ineptitude, the producers managed to create something so staggeringly bizarre that people couldn't help but embrace it. That is what I remember of the cartoon, and that is exactly what I see in this film; a loving recreation of all the original weirdness. I don't expect everyone to like it, but I certainly expect it to inspire many of the same emotions the original cartoon did, positive or negative. For that, this movie has earned my ten bucks opening night. I expect nothing more than a two hour block of solid cheese that will make me giggle with shameless glee, and if that's what I get, Speed Racer will be in my top ten guilty pleasure movies of all time.
