Will show up at the end of the movie. Indy will finally have gotten the Crystal Skull and then he'll be surrounded by armed enemies.

Enter, Short Round, as he 'accidentally' sets off a booby trap and yells "I no touch nuthing Doctor Jones!"

Enemies then unload on Shorty(enabling Indy to escape), exit Short Round.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Veer away from their jeep so Indy can't jump over and take them out with the spray!

That would force Indy's crew to crash into the other side of the forest/woods/jungle/whatever to survive.......of course, they could then just go up, left, down, left to escape though.(oooh, but then there would be a scary graveyard!)

I hope this shot means that most of the action stuff in this film will be in-camera, like the first film. I know the teaser trailer showed some big CG set pieces but I still have hope. It's amazing how well the first film holds up - I think it's because most of the action happens in-camera with very little optical compositing (unlike the dreadful third film - the zeppelin shit was fucking TERRIBLE, even then).

by TheLastCleric
Mar 7th, 2008
10:46:00 AM
That it’s not “hip” to like ROTJ, even though it contains some of the absolute greatest scenes of the original trilogy. You see, it had Ewoks, and they were furry and cute so that completely cancelled out everything else that was so cool about the film, including that insanely awesome speeder bike chase. I also keep forgetting that Raiders was the only good Indy film; the others sucked despite containing some of the greatest action ever put to celluloid. It’s the same thing with the prequels: a few wooden lines and some awkward acting here and there, a few goofy Jar Jar moments, and everything else about those films are completely cancelled out. I seriously wonder at what point so many people became this jaded, cynical, and full of their own shit. I used to get angry at this kind of nonsense but honestly, at this point, I seriously pity some of you joyless creatures. I’ve watched that trailer a dozen times and it gives me chills every time the music kicks in and Indy whips across the screen. I guess I’d rather enjoy than nitpick over CG pants or argue if the film looks “grainy enough.”

Let's just past judgment went we see this on the big screen of what it reminds us.
"both Speilberg and Lucas are done"
by I Dunno
Mar 7th, 2008
10:57:03 AM
WTF does that mean?

Let me preface this by saying that box office does not equal quality. But "done" suggests at least some sort of failure on their part, beyond internet fanboy bitching.

Revenge of the Sith made more than the last film, the entire prequels were at about 2 billion. Again, box office doesn't mean critical acclaim but those numbers don't happen if everyone thinks the last movie sucked. See The Matrix sequels.

Spielberg? War of the Worlds made 5x its budget back, no matter what Tribble6969 happened to think about it.

Neither of these guys are "done". And neither of them needed to leave whatever continent they own to do a movie that they didn't genuinely want to do.

Again...

The 80's were a rather booming time for the economy. The 2000's have been a decline. So people kind of resent having their pockets picked more than they did back then. And the uncreative mining of nostagia to trick parents into taking their kids (and using it as a mechanism for getting the kids hooked on Shia, the Action Hero of the New Generation) rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Amen to that, brutha. And NoDiggity, I think there is a strong argument to be made that the Indy Films(and the first Star Wars trilogy, as well) were, at their very core, "nostalgia mining". Taking a peek at any chapter of old Flash Gordon or Perils Of Pauline serials makes it obvious that they were hardly original.

by rbatty024

were taking from the past, but they were also making it new and exciting. Star Wars was combining The Odyssey with Flash Gordon, which is pretty fucking original, and Indiana Jones was making the old adventure serials less campy but still maintained a sense of fun. It's a world of difference between those films and today's direct adaptations. The only reason stuff like Transformers is being put on screen is because of marketing. It's a "known quantity."

by NoDiggity
Mar 7th, 2008
01:29:38 PM
And the Indiana Jones movies sure didn't stop that bullet. Actually, as loathesome as TEMPLE OF DOOM is, it is arguably more original than CRUSADE. Unfortunately, it's original in a Howard The Duck sort of way (no surprise, since Lucas hired Katz & Hyuck to write it). Originality isn't the be-all-and-end-all. However, slavish point-for-point rehashing does tend to leave less room for originality. Yes, Star Wars and Raiders did look to the past, but they managed to do-it-up in a more modern style. They didn't make Star Wars look like Flash Gordon. They didn't insist that Raiders be filmed in black and white. The went for the Feel, not for bullet-point lists of inclusions. It was "What was fun about those old serials, what about them sparked out imaginations, and how can we realize the IMAGINATIVE vision those film's inspired?" not "We gotta make it be as much like those films as possible". Had they gone with the latter, Star Wars and Raiders would have been hideous, because a lot of those old serials were hideous.

That wasn’t directed at you. We all have our favorites. What annoys me is this constantly negative attitude directed towards anything that doesn’t fall under this supposedly sacrosanct umbrella of quality. (i.e. Raiders, Star Wars, Empire and everything else sucks.) It’s tedious and annoying.

Mining nostalgia? I guess you thought that was a pretty clever comment but what you seem to forget is that the entire concept of Indiana Jones was about creating films that did that very thing; evoked nostalgia by emulating serial cliffhangers and films from the so-called “Golden Era” of Hollywood. The thing is, each Indy film was a pretty unique story unto itself and each film was almost entirely self-contained so I’m not sure what aspects of these films are redundant other than some action templates which usually get a fresh injection of creativity in Spielberg films. I think more than likely you made a comment that was foolish and premature and rather than simply retract it you’re making increasingly idiotic comments to argue a tenuous point of view based on a film you’ve seen two minutes of footage from. Good luck with that.

Based on the logic you've displayed in the Indy TBs.

You've obviously got a problem with any film that you feel blatently retreads the exact same things as the film(s) which came before it. So you wouldn't be happy if KOTCS looked and felt just like Raiders.

On the other hand, you also aren't happy when it departs too much fro what has been seen (and NOT seen) and done in the first three films. And anywhere in the middle of those two just blends two elements you already find disatisfying.

So, no matter what this film is like, I'm afraid you'd have been unhappy with it just because it was made at all.

my condolences.

There's such thing as a successful Retread.
by NoDiggity
Mar 7th, 2008
02:11:53 PM
Arguably. I found that I enjoyed watching "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" recently. There was retreading, there were elements included to make it seem Indyish, but, for instance, it all took place in Europe ... not a sign of Amazonian Jungles and Mayan architecture to be seen. And the characters spoke with conviction, and sounded passionately into the history they were exploring. It felt like the first movie, even if it was a lot dumber than the first movie. So I'm saying that it's possible that KOTC will be on a level with Crusade in enjoyability (for me) but from what I've seen (from the atrocious apathetic acting from Ford in the trailer) that this won't have that most important quality ... characters who I believe in, with the investment by the actors to make me care again.

Lucas loves the callbacks to earlier films ("I have a bad feeling about this"), so expect at least a scene where Indy runs toward the camera lens to a tight close up of his eyes, then a pullback reveal, which Speilberg will put a tweak in. Just like the whip/shooting scene in Raiders, echoed in Temple, will I'm sure be repeated here.
very interesting action scene
by joel007
Mar 7th, 2008
02:13:30 PM
I was scanning through some of the Hasbro Indy toy pics, and saw something VERY INTERESTING. It was a toy of a rocket sled. Grey, had two large rockets on the back, had a chair with seatbelts on the front and ran on tracks. Had an Indy figure and a Soldier figure. NOW... here's where it gets interesting... There is a script out there on the interwebs called Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men From Mars - written by Die Hard scribe Jeb Stuart. Story by Lucas. The script is a disaster, but there is a part where Indy is at area 51 and gets in a fight with a solder on... YES... a rocket sled. The sled goes out to a nuke test site. Indy hides in a basement thing and a nuke goes off. The script as a whole was a disaster and had no crystal skulls, but the action scene was very cool and I guarantee you Lucas came up with that action bit and wanted to recycle it in the eventual film. What's cool about the teaser is it basically showed NOTHING and got people excited. Where's the Yale chase stuff? Boat chases?

02:21:47 PM
WHAT?!?! Because there are trees? Fucks sake. Seriously, you guys are really stretching it here.

What similarities are there in this ONE SINGLE image to that of the Speeder Bike scene, which Spielberg didn't even direct?

If it were a motorcycle chase through the thick of the jungle MAYBE. But it's two military jeeps on an OPEN DIRT ROAD. Honestly, the bitching has gone from ALMOST slightly understandable to pretty much embarrassing on your part.

You're a perfect example of what's wrong with film buffs these days. Nitpicking every little image you see and trying to come up with a way to say that this is going to suck before you even see it.

And as far as CG goes, there was really only one sequence with CG. The waterfalls were NOT CG... that's a real location. The car chase was CG but it would have been done with green screen back in the day, so I prefer CG in that respect. The only huge CG moment was that stone tower folding in. Stop blowing things out of proportion.

All you're doing is living a cynical life, convincing yourself it's going to suck to protect yourself from the disappointment we had with Phantom Menace. Spielberg and Lucas were the ones who gave you Indiana Jones in the first place. If I trust anyone to do a sequel right, it's them. Bitching about Crusade? Well, it wasn't Raiders but it had more heart and fun than nearly every blockbuster within a decade of it.

Prequel scores - very different from the OT scores
by finky089
Mar 7th, 2008
03:39:27 PM
that goes without saying, but the more I listened to the prequel scores, the more each one grew on me. And I was surprised that it was more often little tracks like "Return to Naboo" or certain parts of longer tracks that I found myself taking a shine to the most, instead of Duel of the Fates or Battle of the Heroes. These were parts that musically told much more than anything that showed on the screen.

The more I listened to the scores of the Prequels, the less I strictly associated the two. I know that sounds loopy, but hear me out.

I, like many others, found myself disappointed overall with the prequel films. But the more I listened to WIlliam's work, the more I could take the elements he was scoring to and turn them into the story that SHOULD have been. Or in some cases, completely different elements of the story I imagine myself. Who says you have to stick to the "cannon" when you're listening on your own?

And, so, overtime, I've grown to enjoy most of the prequel music even more than the movies they go with.

that after this movie hits, Lucas will allow the realease of some of the unproduced sequel scripts. (though he'll NEVER release the Darabont one) I think it's cool to see what might have been. There used to be an Alien 3 script online some years ago, with no Ripley, featuring Hicks and marines battling Aliens on Earth. Or the "Beverly Hills Die Hard" script I once read. Was very close, but Eddie Murphy pulled out due to money. The eventual third films for both of them had numrous elements in common with the script I read. After Murphy dropped out of Beverly Hills Die Hard, they did a draft with McClane and Rosewood. When Willis dropped out, they actually did a Rosewood/Holly McClane draft.

Interesting experience on BHC 3: I was a huge admirer of John Landis. HUGE. Animal House, Blues Bros, 3 amigos, trading places, spies like us... Felt bad he had fallenm on hard times as a director. Seemed to have lost his chops. We did a bunch of night shoots at theme park in bay area. Was looking forward to watching Landis work. What I watched was his DP and lighting guys set up the shots, he'd mosey out of his trailer, BS with everyone (he was a really nice guy) then talk to good looking women. Eddie would come out of his trailer, find his mark. Landis would be told they were ready, they'd do the scene a few times and that was it. Landis was COMPLETELY disinterested as a director, and I had to wonder when that happened. Also said a lot about why he lost his chops. I will say however, that he seems to have rediscovered himself in these docu's he's been doing.

We've pretty much seen everything. Nothing surprises anymore. CGI overload has made our imaginations immune to wonder. Twists galore, time bending stories ... all done. It's no wonder NoDig's so jaded about a lack of originality in movies. Not to mention how hard it must be for writers and filmmakers to come up with something truly inventive, and actually get it greenlit for mass consumption.

That does not preclude one from enjoying a great movie, or great movies being made. TWBB for example, has amazing performances, dialogue, direction and cinematography. The story is not original nor groundbreaking, but solid. Something connecting the human experience. And really, that's what made movies so special when motion pictures were invented.

When Indy uses his whip for the first time on Baranka i was reminded of how Luke slices the speeder in half! Or when they're trekking through the jungle and stop to look at the poison darts reminded me of Han Solo taking a breather by the tree. This also reminded me of in Adventures of Robin Hood when they make their escape from the castle on horses. Another thing i'm reminded off when i look at that photo was in First Blood when Rambo drives that truck. I also think that scene in Predator when the russian helicopter explodes was very reminiscent of the Russians in this photo. Another thing that rekindled my mind-bank was the climactic road battle in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior when they were firing their darts and molotovs as well. One more thing was in Goldfinger when Bond is driving and shooting in the woods at the Chinese men thhat brought be back to this photograph. I also have to add the car chasees in Bullitt and French Connection gave strong vibes of that photograph.

Bond flick. Goldfinger's pretty good too. In fact I enjoy, to varying degrees, Sean Connery's Bond films. Then they pretty much sucked until Casino Royal. Oh, and those "themes" NoDiggity came up with are awfully broad. Holy shit, this Indiana Jones film utilizes a MacGuffin! It's just like almost every other action film ever made! His list was even worst than the "reminds me of Return of the Jedi" comment.

I can't shake the feeling that they're banking mostly on nostaglia here. Remember the trailer for The Godfather Part II, voiceover guy called it the stunning, epic etc. conclusion to the Corleone saga. People buy the box sets, love the films, hold them dear to their hearts. Almost 20 years later, there's a Part III- and look how that turned out. Pt. III wasn't bad, but come on it was a fucking Godfather movie. I didn't care so much when they pulled the same thing with Die Hard because let's face it, it's not an instantly iconic franchise worldwide and there wasn't as much continuity and consistency throughout the trilogy. Regardless, look how that turned out. it was a mediocre fun action movie Bruce did- but it wasn't fucking Die Hard. Partly because they went too big, and with all this Area 51 shit I'm not even going to bother getting too excited about it. You can go ahead and hate all you want but come on buds, Shia's just stunt casting 'cause he's the new "It" motherfucker for the kiddies to buy the Happy Meals. Like, if a new Indy was done right I'd eat it up as excitedly as some of you are, but so far it's not looking so hot to me and once we start seeing Ford on Pepsi bottles and INDY CRUNCH W/ MARSHMALLOW CRYSTAL SKULLS! it's only going to seem more and more...shallow.

When you absolutely, positively, have to kill evry last motherfucker in a jeep, accept no substitues. A burst or two, esp. at that range, should turn our heroes into hamburger meat. Sometimes I want to see something like that, more No Country style deaths if you will. You watch a Bond flick and no matter what shit they throw at him you know he's gonna make it, there's no suspense, you know? Or, hey Commies, consider this: SHOOT THE FUCKING TIRES OUT. I don't know, that might do it. I'm willing to put money on Indy using his whip to yank the steering wheel, sending the commies off a cliff or something. Cue Wilhelm scream.
