I thought I remembered hearing a LONG time ago now that the 3rd film will be Two-Face as the villain with the backdrop being the trial of the Joker (for film #2 crimes). Is this still the case? Obviously they'd have to recast Joker, but I just wonder now if they're removing all mention of the character completely.

I mean, okay, its great when your 5, but it really doesn't hold up at all. Sure, its better than the awful Superman 1, but Supes 2 is also, at times, laughably awful. As far as best superhero movies, that would go to Spider-Man 1&2, XMen2, and Batman Begins.

Where do I sign for Joaquin Phoenix as Joker?
by RyanMurray
Mar 6th, 2008
04:57:38 PM
He was my original 'dream casting' for The Joker and I'm EXTREMELY happy with how Ledger pulled off the role, but if The Joker plays even a minor role in the third film then I say get Phoenix to portray him. Or call in Guy Pearce finally, and get all those rumors started back up.

Either way, I wonder what the third films title will be. :)

No, they can't recast the Joker. I know it sucks that he can't be in the third film but it just wouldn't work. Ledger's Joker should be the defining Joker. Anything else would be a lame imitation or a performance too different that it would be jarring. In any case, it would carry a lot of baggage that just wouldn't be worth it.

LONG HALLOWEEN added depth to Harvey's character?!
by SamBluestone
Mar 6th, 2008
05:50:47 PM
LONG HALLOWEEN didn't "add depth" to Harvey's character, so much as reuse material from stories like "Eye of the Beholder," from BATMAN ANNUAL #14. In fact, by comparison to other, better stories, LONG HALLOWEEN is positively superficial and one-note. They didn't even go into Harvey's father, just hinting at it in a throw-away line! Harvey just comes off as a "really angry guy," not someone with serious psychological issues stemming from a lifetime of abuse. LONG HALLOWEEN was beautifully illustrated piece of crap.

Mostly because it was all about Singer jerking off all over the overrated Donner films, and transferring his own gay emo martyr complex onto Supes. For me, they still haven't made a good Superman movie. I'm still waiting. All I have are the animated series (Supes and the various Justice Leagues), and the comics (ACTION COMICS current arc being fan-fuckin'-rastic).

As far as equivalent scenes of wonder in recent cinema, more or less any shot in either Pan's Labyrinth or Children of Men makes mincemeat of any shot in Donnerman.

Two-face could be imaginary...
by D.Vader
Mar 6th, 2008
06:00:50 PM
Something about the way Eckhart described the shooting process brought up an interesting idea in my mind. What if Dent IS horribly scarred, but it doesn't look as bad as it does to him. Meaning, Dent sees a horribly deformed version of himself in the mirror, one that is as evenly fractured into good and evil as his broken mind now is. That could explain the different FX work. People see him as scarred on the right side of his face, but not evenly (practical makeup). He however sees a crazed monster that is perfectly divided down the middle, perhaps one with ragged clothes and a wildly changing face or hair (enhanced CGI). This could be a realistic take Nolan would take on the character.

...over at batman-on-film.com? "AICN CLUES IN TO THE PRESENCE OF TWO-FACE IN TDK!" Is this news? I thought he showed up in a teaser over-the-shoulder shot in a Wizard World trailer or whatever that con was in Chicago. Bartender: "Harvey Dent...I heard you were dead..." Dent: "Half..." In fact, from what the director himself says, the movie is about Wayne and Dent, with Joker being more of an elemental force that moves the plot forward, like "the shark in Jaws". I thought we all knew this already. Sure, maybe it's more implied than said outright, but they sure imply the fuck out of it. Didn't think we needed Aaron Ekhart to spell it out in semaphore for it to be obvious.

There is too much of a mix between what did and didn't work in the Donner films.

You're not going to top Williams' score or the production design of Krypton, the escape ship, the Fortress of Solitude or the performance of Christopher Reeve himself.

Ok, yeah so obviously you can improve the FX and get a better Lex Luthor but you still either have the choice of keeping all the above mentioned elements and keeping continuity or rebooting the franchise but with what the filmmakers think are better elements than have already been done.

It's something that Singer has never been able to reconcile.

Oh, and turning back time by making the Earth go backwards? I mean, cmon! Terrible. Like I said, when your 5 all of that doesn't matter, when you get older it just seems worse and worse. Its camp. Spider-Man had two villians
by nicegoogly
Mar 6th, 2008
07:06:18 PM
The Green Goblin and Tobey Maguire's homosexuality and it ended up being great. Multiple villians are fine as long as the movie does not get sidetracked getting them to "work together" like the other Batfilms with the exception of begins. You didn't know Scarecrow was working for Ras Al Ghul until the third act. Carmine Falcone connected with Scarecrow, but they kept it tangential and he was merely a bridge to the middle man then the main villain, Ras Al Ghul. I am not assuming that The Dark Knight handles it well, since I have not seen it, but the first film has provided an indicia of reliability, and this movie is helmed by nearly all of the same folks from the first film. Although many speak highly of Batman Returns, the villian mashup, which seemed to be the point of the rest of the Batfag series, died because there was no real or logical connection with the villains. Spider-man 3 pulls even lamer shit at the end when Venom says "Hey Sandman, I have not seen you the whole movie, wanna team up?"
I'm thinking they're doing a CG face
by performingmonkey
Mar 6th, 2008
07:07:18 PM
It's pretty obvious CG will be involved when he says 'they're using all of today's technology' or whatever. He wouldn't say that if it was just a straight makeup job. It will be good if it's like in Begins where they used CG to make the fucked up character faces when people hallucinated with the Scarecrow's gas. Perhaps he will shoot scenes with half his face covered with green. Though I would prefer it if they went the way of having him like a realistic burns victim, with the face deformed, as opposed to what we usually get. The real question now is HOW he gets the acid in his face. Will Batman be responsible? Will The Joker do it? It's sad to think the story could be fucked up because The Joker now can't appear in the third movie. Though maybe we've all been blindsided and The Joker WILL die in TDK. It would be better if he was locked in Arkham. Perhaps they could use a silent Joker for movie 3, and we only see the back of his head in the cell. What about 'Two-Face' for the title of movie 3? Or 'Gotham'

This Two-Face looks nothing like the Tommy Lee Jones version. His bad side hair is non-existent, his eyelids are missing, he has a red eye, and his mouth is eaten away around his teeth, so he has exposed teeth. Yeah, that really sounds like the same character.

Some great moments, but it really did not hold up all that well. I mean, did anyone ever notice, in either cut, that if you suspend disbelief about the spinning the Earth backwards to turn back time (only on Earth and no where else, apparently), there are huge inconsistencies with the "damage" undone at the end and everyone's memory of it. Don't get me started on the giant Glad wrap S thrown at the evil Kryptonians, the chamber nonsene, the multiple, possible holographic Supermen (which could have been explained with some Kryptonian technology in the Fortress of Solitude, but was not even addressed). Corny, cringeworthy lines aside, it was 1979-1980, so it is not such a huge deal, there was no reason to have such a shrill Lois Lane. Not that Smallville gets it better. Lois is still shrill, but she if totally fuckable. Plus, she is a nude Uwe Boll alumnus. Man, her career is dead.

The best villians are those that are defeated and just keep coming back. The arch-nemesis. Joker has always been Batman's foil, killing him off or not doing another movie with him would be like having Darth Vader die in the first Death Star. Yea, it sucks that Ledger bit it, but from what we've seen so far he did a fantastic fucking job creating a character. Not allowing that charcter to go on would be a huge insult to him in my opinion.

neither of them resemble anything like the character of the comics, blooming Star Trek fanboys can only cast within the limited range of any female in a Star Trek uniform! You want someone who would look good in a catsuit, not too tall either since Christian Bale is not giant at 6'. Both those two ST rejects are far too tall to act alongside him and neither look like they have street savvy of a one-time prostitute-cum-socialite. Someone like Natalie Portman would suit the part, being not too tall, very nice physique without having over the top boobs, and can appear street edged as well as socialite glamour to fit both sides of the character in the comic who rises from her prostitute days to he double life as a socialite/cat-burglar. Mark Wahlberg would have made an awesome Harvy Dent/Two-Face, even better than Matt Damon. Ben Foster for the Riddler and Jack Black for the Penguin; there all the main casting done!

X-men 2 sucked
by WolfmanNards
Mar 6th, 2008
10:00:11 PM
Where's Storm's accent? Why didn't wolverine smell that it was Mystique on top of him and not jean grey? Prof. X would never freeze and entire mall. Piss poor foreshadowing. Especially when he could just freeze the 2 mutants. Prof. X would never infiltrate the white house. Besides, that scene was just awkward/melodramatic. This movie is loaded with poorly placed forced in your face foreshadowing Prof. X far too easily subdued by Stryker's son. Of all the places to crash, the x-jet crashes in the ONE spot in the entire globe where magneto happens to be. Nobody fights anything except for wolverine. (This complaint goes for the 1st movie as well. Wolverine vs the world while everybody sits back)Of all the x-men stories to be told, this was a pretty lame one. A movie with a global premise ends with a handful of people bickering in a warehouse. Where was wolverine when he was away between x-1 and x-2? He said he was going to find out about his past, and came back with nothing? Why did he leave to begin with? Wolverine was a bit dry in this movie. He was a lot more fun in the first one. Who cares about the lady deathstrike fight? She doesn't say anything in the whole movie. She's just a ninja with claws. Just one more thing for wolverine to fight. The x-jet didn't have to take off. They could have hovered in the vicinity and searched for jean's body. Overall, what is this movie about? "Let's kill the mutants." "No don't kill us" That's the plot. So much is thrown at us and none of it is strung together. Where the hell was cyclops? This movie has an awesome opening, and its just downhill from there.

x-men 2 is one of the best. ever. only two other superheroes movies in existence join the elite rank - begins & spidey2. unless you want to count in the spandex-free variety, then unbreakable belongs in there as well. the rest are all mediocre pieces of crap.

like someone said above, two-face was a gimmick turned into great character via the animated series.

black or not, billy dee's never been a great actor. honestly, him as two-face is the worst idea in the history of worst ideas. besides, him being black doesn't make the two sides of his face all that contrasting, does it?

it's more we barely saw the title character, the hero, in the early films. Even splitting time is going too far. it's the number of villains that's the problem, it's the writer/director juggling them. as pointed out already by examples, more than one villain CAN WORK! 2 hours is a looooot of movie time. the only time many villains dont work is when you have a lazy writer and director behind the wheel.

lousy writers, producers and directors just happen to screw the pooch when it comes to it.

I can list many flicks containing just one baddie as the "villain of the month" that are far worse than Spider-Man 3. Actually, "multiple villains" would be the way to go if today's producers were ballsy enough to pull a Star Wars and try to create a whole universe as soon as the first film, instead of just slavishly follow the Spider-Man pattern because "that's what's working".

to have Billy Dee Williams in a one minute cameo as Harvey Dent in Batman. Then in Batman Forever or Robin, or whatever the hell one it was we have Tommy Lee Jones. I mean come on you don't have to have the exact same actor in the role, but he should have put a nobody in as Dent since you knew Billy Dee was never going to play Two-Face. It's not even the fact that he is black, although that might have upset some purists, it was the fact that Billy Dee is too cool, suave, and has a moustache. That is not the Harvey Dent we knew.

that the Joker will survive in the film....hopefully it will be one of those vague "he might be dead but he's pretty much not" kinda thing and he's still a threat in the third....Nolan has said time and time again that he has a problem with killing Villains (after all even Ras MIGHT have survived the train crash as he is vaguely "immortal")and I think he understand that Joker is Bats ARCH nemesis-he's the worst of the worst, the biggest bad he'll ever have to face and he'll keep coming back again and again....

personally I like some of his movies, and despise others. The first Batman was great, but there was the obvious flaw I mentioned. Returns was pretty good. I've never seen Nightmare before Christmas, and liked the Willy Wonka remake, but I really thought Corpse Bride was overrated crap, but to each their own.

Raz, Scarecrow, and Falcone. As long as theirs no cartoonish teaming up of big villians it'll be fine. Chances are two-face will redeem himself by helping to take down Joker. Just like Spiderman 3.

The Scarecrow was just a minor character, though he was the "villain". Oh and the guy who said Empire strikes back had multiple villains, you forgot the monster in the asteroid field. And Lando, at least half of the time, before he redeemed himself. And the ugnaughts too. They were going to destroy threepio!

Recasting the Joker
by TheLastCleric

As I understand it, Nolan always planned on keeping the Joker alive but now that Health is gone I’m wondering if he may simply opt to keep the character locked up and away from any further films. I think recasting a new Joker, while certainly feasible, will be difficult if Heath has nailed the role as perfectly as I’m predicting. I also think Nolan and the rest of the cast might have reservations about recasting out of a sense of camaraderie and respect for Ledger, which I would completely understand. Regardless, the Two Face story arch should carry Nolan and the rest of the cast easily into the third film, perhaps aided by some ancillary villains like Killer Croc. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing Bane brought to the big screen if done properly, though I could do without the whole “Broken Bat” plotline. Lastly, to the guy bad-mouthing The Long Halloween, you’re certainly entitled to your opinion but understand that your view is not widely shared and for good reason. The Long Halloween offered a much more compelling back story for Dent than the original origin and cemented, at least in my opinion, the deep respect and friendship between Dent and Batman which makes their eventual adversarial relationship that much more compelling and tragic.

to take the attention off of Heath Ledger. They dont know what to do about commercials/trailers and advertisting now. Would using Ledger in ads offend people? Will it turn people off of the movie? I think youll see Two Face played up and the Joker played down in the next trailer and all the other advertising from now on. I just hope they dont cut any of the Joker out of the movie. That would be a huge mistake, Im sure Ledger would not have wanted that to happen.

From what I've heard, that appears to have been the intention all along. They were going to be doing a phased promotional campaign where each "phase" concentrated on a different character in the film. They defintely won't be cutting any of the Joker/Ledger out of the film. But they may have had to cut his phase a little short. Unfortunately.

I saw on darkhorizons.com of leaked images of Two-Face, his face isn't symmetrically scarred, its like flesh has been ripped off and his left eye was red like the terminator, I dunno if it was real, but knowing Nolan and the *sort of* realistic take the series has, it seemed like a viable design.

And does anyone remember when Anthony Michael Hall claimed he was cast in a "super-secret, multi-million dollar role" where he would play sort of an anti-Batman-type character?? They told us he's some nobody-reporter in the movie, but now there's a Slade Wilson action figure in the line-up? Wouldn't having Deathstroke show up (totally works in Nolan's universe, by the way) be a super-secret multi-million anti-Batman character? And if Hall's role as a nobody-reporter was so super-secret, why did they tell us? My prediction: We've got one more villain they're trying to keep quiet.

by GreatOne2

There's far too many villains for Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman to feature them all in movies. So why not open a movie with, or at least have a montage sequence of, the super-hero fighting villains other than the primary villain in that film.

For example, open a Spider-Man movie with him dispatching Electro, Tarantula, Vulture, Chameleon, Mysterio, etc. Or have Batman fight Mad Hatter, Zsasz, and Black Mask. It'd be great to see some of these characters reach the big screen.

Who ISN'T in this movie?

You know what sucked about the penguin?
by Sepulchrave
Mar 8th, 2008

It wasn't inherently Danny DeVito's fault; it was Burton's obsession with bestial outsiders rejected by society. He took several ideal characteristics that rightly belonged to the Penguin: namely slick business dealing, hypocrisy, wealth and gangsterism, and gave them away to someone he cooked up himself to be the Penguin's enabler : Max Schreck. The way to the penguin is back; give him back his slick social status; his charm and his wealth. And I loved someone's David Mitchell suggestion: he's not ugly but he has these weird round black irises and pale skin: all he'd need is a nose and an umbrella.
