...really is a great film, the epitome of quiet, haunting sci-fi. It's kind of like a post apocalyptic Paris, Texas. Very highly recommended.

I'm really digging those Anchor Bay covers, and there's a ton of truly great films there under their "cult classics" series, but I've gotta think those covers are actually going to hurt sales with the masses. Also it should be noted that most of these titles have far superior versions already out on dvd, so shop wisely folks.

Cult Fiction vs Criterion

I recently bought a cop of Criterion's Man That Fell to Earth, and I'm very happy with it, but jealous of that Cult Fiction copy. This new Cult Fiction line looks great! In The Long Good Friday, which I saw like a million years ago, check out the surprise appearance of a certain actor in the last seconds of the film. He has no dialogue.

Color me stunned! Granted CHUD's been around for a while now but I'm stunned they picked up The Quiet Earth for these Cult Fiction sets (I was watching footage from the film not too long ago on youtube, I saw it back when I was a munchkin in the eighties). I love that crazy-looking Klaus is on the cover of Fitzcarraldo (the bava cover and the Wickerman covers look great) but you gotta love that "fuck you and die" look from the kids on the Class of 84 cover. Nice to see Roadgames getting a release and agreed Harry Psycho 2 (which is and always will be a totally different and unique experience than the first) is a great film (that final scene where Norman delivers the big whack (you know what I mean) was a punch in the face experience as a kid. It's very cool to see so much care going into re-releases of geek-type films (and surprising that they've actually picked such an impressive bunch). God I will miss the cheapieness of good old DVD once we're all living in a Blu Ray world.

I've seen the Best of The Wicker Man on Youtube, and it is fan-fuckin'-tastic! When Nicolas Cage punches a woman while wearing a bear outfits, I just about lost it.

I have to see The Man Who Fell to Earth. Does it use a lot of Bowie music or is it just him starring. Either way, a Bowie performance is something not to be missed. Just compare his short appearance as Pontius Pilate in Last Temptation against that pussy whipped Pilate in Gibson's shitty film.

Really excited about this Anchor Bay thing, even though I've rented half those films in the past 2 years and the ones I haven't are already on my netflicks, but I may change them to this new thing. But FITZCARRALDO man, that movie is a fucking painstakingly tedious movie. They may as well called is a documentary because they really did it. I mean there are like 20-30 minutes of time in that movie where you can just fast forward to see the ship going up the hill and thats it. I need to see Herzogs Nasfuratu remake, because anything he does thats not a documentary, probably would have been better if it had just been. Also I am willing to put money on Jonah Hill being in the Night of the Living Dorks remake, its a good movie but a little too early to be in "Cult" collection? I don't see this remake being good.
Finally, not a shitty cover in sight.

Why the I am legand
by Series7
Mar 5th, 2008
07:40:52 AM
Hate? Omega Man is no better then I am Legand, somewhere between the first 3/4 of I am legand and the first 20 minutes of Omega is roughly 4/5 of the book, except Nevielle is a military scientist. As far as book to movie adaptations go, I feel like I am Legand was pretty good. I don't understand how you can put post after post about the wonderence that is the Mist and then shit all over I am legand? The mist had a horrible ending, not because it was shocking, but because it made no sense. They may as well have said that it was only a dream. I am legand was a pretty good flick minus some shoddy CGI (nothing worse then the Mist though) plus William Smith's acting was better and more believable then most of the characters in the Mist. I am Legand is a much more solid movie then the Mist will ever be.

Was it really a surprise that its Spicoli best film he has directed? It wasn't that hard to surpass the worlds SLOWEST chase scene between David Morse and Jack in the Crossing Guard. Plus I fell asleep during most of the Pledge, but I remember their being a twist ending that I saw coming a mile away. Also weren't those movies both about the Joker getting revenge on someone for killing his kid? The story of into the wild sums up how I feel about movies of 07, something that in the heart of it is really dumb, but leave it to hollywood to blow it up and praise it.

I can see why Harry didnt. I was lenient on the fx because smith was doing such a good job, but the ending or lack thereof really destroyed it for me. Would it have been that hard to film the book's ending or even the original prosetivitch(sp?) ending. Harry had been psycing out over that script since 97 so to see a rather lackluster version made can understandably affect your viewpoint. I think the rest of us were like "He didnt say hell naw, and it wasnt a total abortion" and in our surprise at that, we liked it. It's a decent movie, and I'll watch it again, but it certainly isn't the kind of thing where I am flabbergasted at someone else's dissapointment. The Mist on the otherhand was mostly such a good translation of the source material and the new ending didnt really betray the tone, that it was hard to view that as not a success. I love the Mist, but only moderately enjoyed I Am Legend and that was mainly because the book wasn't totally destroyed. If they went back and added the actual ending to the movie, starting sometime around the point Smith and the survivor girl are having their "do you believe in God" talk, I think it could be something great. Obviously, that won't happen.

Why does Harry put on movies that he hasnt seen or even know anything about on here? Im sorry, but if you are going to put a movie on here... dont just put it cause of the cover hoping it might be good. Unless he is wanting more kick backs from Amazon. Plus, I think Harry came off a little homo in the review of Mrs Doubtfire, its like he is looking and wanting to see Robin Williams rain forest covered schmeckel or something. If thats the case, he better get his ass down to the filming of the Mayor of Castro Street then.

The Mist was so Great and about the ending *spoilers*

I loved The Mist, always loved the story and thought Darabont did an amazing job of adapting it. What I don't understand is why people have such a hard time 'getting' the ending. My question is why? What is so hard to believe? People say they wouldn’t mercy kill everyone and they have a problem with how fast it went down. How long did you want to see them sit in a car and debate it? They just spent the last couple days watching people get torn apart by fucking monsters not to mention having a giant one just walk in front of them. If I ran out of gas and all I could think about was getting eaten by monsters and especially my kid having to be killed that way, I would just use the gun and take them out as quick as possible. I can understand some peoples complaints about the military coming in, but damn it read like something I could have pictured Stephen King to have written, and Thomas Janes acting in that ending is heart-wrenching. The ending isn’t ridiculous. It’s probably what each of us would do if we were in that situation.

Night Of The Living Dorks is awful!

I got no idea why it gets so much love outside of Germany. Probably there is an international cut that is waaaaaaaaaaaaay different from the huge pile of shit that only 10 year old, weed smoking "huh huh we are so cool because we watch a movie about zombies"-idiots can love and which was shown here in Germany.
I said it before and I have to say it again: It doesn't work as zombie comedy, it doesn't work as teenie comedy. Except the first few minutes there is NOTHING in it that works! It's a waste of time!

by DerLanghaarige

09:11:10 AM
Isn't it bad enough that every goddamn movie in the whole world is suddenly a "cult classic" (I give 10.000 B.C. two weeks until somebody calls it a cult movie), why do they have today, in 2008, to come up with a title of a movie, that has been hip more than 10 years ago, but in fact ruined a whole generation of moviegoers and filmmakers? (Yes, I mean Pulp Fiction.)
But at least most movies in these "Cult Fiction"-line seem to be great, so I won'T spread too much hate against it. But Night Of The Living Dorks? What the Fuck!?
The Ending of the Mist
by TheLastCleric
Mar 5th, 2008
09:15:29 AM
Love it or hate it, the ending of The Mist was courageous and certainly atypical for a Hollywood feature. I Am Legend by contrast had a weak, feel-good ending that completely abandoned the thematic of the novel and made for an unbearably tedious resolution. As to the caliber of actors in the films, I think a cast comprised of Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden and Toby Jones (who owned the role of Capote in the biopic Infamous) can hold their own with Will Smith emoting alongside a German Sheppard. I liked I Am Legend and I think Smith did a solid job but it could have been so much more. The Mist was a methodical and (mostly) accurate adaptation done by people who obviously respected the source material far more than those who wrote and directed Legend.

I thought the ending of the Mist actually went a bit further and added something to the story in that it was also about hope and faith like darabont's other two King films. Except here it showed what happens when we choose to distort hope and faith(first Norton, and then Carmody and her crazed flock), or run out of hope anbd faith altogether(Drayton and his traveling companions).

I was re-watching this "classic" the other day and my how times change minds. The first thing I noticed was just how irritating - and I mean pissing fiberglass irritation, is the one called Ducky in this movie. He is a complete and total pain in the asshole. I remember there was this whole thing where people were mad because Ringwald didn't choose him - but, watching it now -- do you realize how much this assknuckle would get on your nerves. Not only does Ducky not deserve the girl, but he also does,'t really deserve to live. I only hope the girl he meets at prom at the end wasn't a student at that school and instead was a goldilocks type psycopath who wandered into the prom looking for an asshole to kill.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS
by Halloween68
Mar 5th, 2008
11:00:16 AM
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS as a straight up film is awful. That said, the friggin' subtitles and dubbing job they do on this is classic. Just seeing how far off everything is and how much on crack these people who actually wrote the subtitles were on is hilarious. As a warning, don't get your hopes up about the film itself (it tries to be NIGHT OF THE CREEPS but it ends up more like CRITTERS 3 or 4...which one has them coming out of the toilet; or was that GUOULIES). I went in with high expectations but was disappointed. However, about a third into the movie after getting past what was going on on screen I started matching up the subtitles a little better with what they were actually saying. I was on the floor rolling in no time. This is one of those really fun have your friends over and get drunk movies. Not necessarily on the same level of badness as say ROCKY HORROR, but in that same type of arena where you can all start MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER-ing and have creative drinking games with.
Nice, I was hoping it was good.

The trailer looked like it was coming from a good place. I also noticed KIDNAPPED was on there which is the re-cut Lamberto Bava version of his fathers film otherwise known as RABID DOGS. Both versions might be on the dvd but I immensely prefer the RD version released in the 90's over the re-cut that they put out a few years ago. The title sequence of RABID DOGS has such a great 70's feel and is much better without the re-shot scene's from Bava jr. What you're saying is that Guillermo Del Toro's CHUD would be delicious to watch, and I agree, but Mimic is so close to that... Besides, he has so many other good projects. Other than him, only David Fincher and Ridley Scott could do a CHUD worth the reinvention, in my opinion.

call RABID DOGS Bava's "masterpiece" which I kind of disagree with, it seems like with his last film he deviated into exploitation film making (which I don't mind, I found I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE to be enjoyably twisted entertainment) but compared to his work in films like HERCULES IN THE LOST WORLD and THE WHIP AND THE BODY etc. which are all cinematically gorgeous, I find it hard to let RABID DOGS over shine everything else.

Read last week that Paramount's last two HD DVD titles will be Into The Wild and Things We Lost In The Fire. I wholeheartedly agree that it's the best British crime film ever made, but that cover is just goofy. I can't even recall him making that face in the movie. Was he staring at Helen Mirren's tits?

The original is great, the remake was terrible. **SPOILER** The endings are basically the same. However, the original has a final bit that in the remake would have been beyond ridiculous. But in the original it is the fucked-up icing on a rather disturbing cake.

"It’s amazing how great a film can be when it’s original and doesn’t have Cage bug eyeing out – and instead has a melodious Christopher Lee and scary fucking Animal masks." And it's even greater when it has a very naked Brit Ekland.

P.S. Harry, an apple is a fruit, not a vegetable (just like a lemon).

If you follow this wiki and then click on alternate ending, it will give you a rather vague summary of it. I think it has the potential of working better, but then the movie becomes even less worthy of the "I AM Legend" title. It is not like the book ending, but it at least appears to suggest what the book ending suggested-Neville has misjudged greatly the nature of the infected and how they operate.

It might even be enough to warrant me picking up the dvd.

Langhaariger, I thought about that a couple of times....why can't the whole world experience the greatness of "Bang Boom Bang". In my opinion it's the best german films besides "Das Boot" - and yes, even though it is a comedy. Unfortunately nobody out of Germany will understand it, no matter how well it's subbed or dubbed. I mean, it is a superb comedy plotwise which, in fact, would work internationally, but the brilliance of this film lies in it's success to capture the "Ruhrpott-Feeling". Plus the characters are priceless and the casting perfect. A quality Thorwarts latest films never matched. As for "Dorks": I don't get those 'mericans. When they praise "Dorks"...shouldn't they vote Boll for president?

that the NEtflix format change was due to too many people queuing up the high demand titles, creating a logjam effect in their shipping process. Although if Netflix is gonna run McDonald's-esque commercials proudly proclaiming "more than one billion movies rented" one might think they would be adequately stocked on high demand new releases. Their new format is pretty damn frustrating, and they've never openly addressed it. I still like me some Netflix, it's just odd when a service seemingly makes itself more difficult to use, instead of vice versa.

I will tell you exactly why the ending of The Mist was an absurd shock value cop-out. No loving, mentally stable parent on earth would murder their child. PERIOD. They would not be able to do it. Like physically not be able to kill their child. No fucking way. Where there is life, there is hope. As a father, I would try to survive with my son and protect him up until the moment we were being ripped apart by creatures. The filmmakers ask us to invest 90 minutes in the survival of these characters and then throw a cheap, shock ending in to fuck with your emotions. It goes against the logic that the film establishes before that point. I would rather have the camera pan back and show the earth completely covered in The Mist, fade to black. Jane killing his son conflicts with all the love and protection he shows him throughout the first 99% of the film.

Nice to see a couple of lesser-known works included with "Some Like it Hot" and "The Apertment." As a fan of Billy Wilder, you will love Kiss Me Stupid. Like "One! Two! Three!" with Jimmy Cagney (not included here) it's one of his best films, if nearly forgotten by now. Lemon was supposed to play the lead, but Ray Walston nails it fine. Dean Martin's self-parody as Dean-o is just hilarious, and the whole housewife/whore exchange is so Wilder. The Fortune Cookie with Walter Matthau's sleezy lawyer is also pretty good.

Lemme see here: Gary Gygax dies. This guy was a huge presence in the whole fantasy gaming scene past 25 years or so. To deny it or whatever is silly, to ignore it is odd, especially from a site that caters to all of us old nerdherd types that played that shit ad nauseum back in the day. Gygax deserves his due, esp. from Mr. PogoPope himself. Git that puppy wroted and up ASAP just because. Da Natives are restless.

Next up: Patrick Swayze diagnosed w/ terminal Pancreatic Cancer. Okay you guys aren't into the whole personal life Tabloid shite that goes around now. That's great. But-this is a guy who is pretty good, has had a nice run in some flicks I'd suspect you like-Ghost, Red Dawn, Roadhouse, even Dirty Dancing(okay only Herkimer here would like it-whatever). You know the drill. Show some recognition of Swayze and his contributions While He Is Still Alive, albeit for the supposed 5 weeks or so. I had an uncle who died from that shit 3 years ago-it takes'em REAL quick. Say something nice about our friend from Red Dawn, please in other words.

"Patrick Swayze, who starred in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his doctor says.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Dr. George Fisher says in a statement. "All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

The actor's rep adds: "Patrick is continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects. The outpouring of support and concern he has already received from the public is deeply appreciated by Patrick and his family."

I have to agree with Kloipy and others who have stood up for the Nicolas Cage WICKER MAN as an amazing unintentional comedy. It is obviously Cage's greatest overacting performance to date, and has all kinds of crazy shit like the bear costume and the scene where he kicks Leelee Sobieski against a wall. But there's also alot of weird stuff going on that I don't think people give it enough credit for, the whole war of genders theme where he never listens to anything women say... he asks them questions and then seems like he's not even listening to them and interrupts them. And the scene where he comes into the classroom and erases the detailed notes covering the chalkboard! And the one where he tries to help the guy with the cartful of lumber but then knocks it over and helps him pick up one piece and then leaves as if he's satisfied with what he's done. You don't even have to get to the bees scene for this movie to be a classic.

And the fact that it's a remake of a genuinely good cult movie is so unlikely... is there any other example of a cult movie being remade and the remake becomes a genuine cult movie in a completely different way? You can't do that on purpose.

I would also like to say that I really hope Patrick Swayze is okay. I know he's made alot of ridiculous movies but I really like that guy... he's a good actor because he always seems to believe so thoroughly in his characters. Especially ROADHOUSE and POINT BREAK. I think when he's spouting philosophy as those characters he actually believes it.

Thanks goes out to Rush Limbaugh and many other conservatives for convincing millions of republicans to change parties (for one day) and vote for Hillary. Isn't America GREAT, Harry?

The original wicker Man pisses all over the Remake

seriously, it's like comparing TCM and the Remake.

The original is an endlessly quotable creepy as fuck film featuring some brilliant performances and an Ending that has gone down in legend. It's thematically deep and an all round masterpiece. The remake is a piss poor horror movie that is a fabulous unintentional comedy. It fucks me off because it represents everything that is wrong with Hollywood's remake factory. It's a complete failure to understand what made the original gerat coupled with a total aesthetic mismatch. Basically, they just took the title and shat all over it.

It bugs me, because the original hasn't been that widely seen and could very well sink into anonymity now, smothered under Cage's bear-suited bulk.

I like that one too. Swayze was always so babyfaced, I can remember after seeing Uncommon Valor and/or Red Dawn, finding out he was born in '52-at the time that would have made him all of 31 or whatever-ooooo! old!-and being really surprised. He looked 24ish in both, at least that's what I can remember thinking at the time.

I love the original Wicker Man and it is a haunting film. But I did get tons of enjoyment out of the remake, and I do believe it is and will continue to be cult for how fucking absurd it is. It's just one of the weirdest movies that actually got made IMO.

or faced a choice about having them suffer horribly or being humane and ending the pain quickly? I think that's what they were getting at.

SPOILERS - Although I would have liked a 'nod' to that idea in as much as he could have whispered to the old guy not to worry, he'd be quick. Or conversely the old guy telling him "quickly". Which would have ratcheted up the reveal of the army even more and magnified the reaction. Maybe it could have held slightly longer on the long shot of the car before the shots too. The horrible thing for me was the idea of the order of the shooting. Obviously the kid first, but the reactions from the others and the order for the old people... Geez, it's pretty heavy. I was just unsure about such a sudden tonal shift in the kind of horror. Interesting though.

This film was terrible. Absolutely terrible. I don't care if it was made on a low budget and shot within 2 weeks or whatever. Several good movies have been made with low budgets and at a breakneck pace. This film does not fall into that category. The script is terrible. The director needs to go home and re-think his chosen occupation. I'd say the acting sucks, but with a godawful script and an incompetent director, it's difficult to see who is at fault for that one. There was one cool part involving a zombie and a pregnant girl, but that's about it. There's not even a good titty shot or anything. Just a really bad movie.

Clinton's win in OH and TX were merely psychological victories and, according to recent statements from the candidate herself, a way to position herself as the only acceptable VP choice. It's likely Obama will still get the nomination. So before you get too self-congratulatory over your "sabotage" tactic, let's remember to play fair and not f*ck with the democratic process. Pass it on to Limbaugh, Cunningham, and your other cronies alike.

That should be a new cult film. Absolutely terrible acting, absolutely insane gore. The guy who plays the doctor is almost good enough to wipe Jeffrey Combs' ass, in what is clearly an homage to Re-Animator. A prime example of how to make a fun film on a low budget. I hope the filmmakers get some more money for their next venture. Very enjoyable (in a sick, twisted, oh man that is fuckin' gross kinda way).

How am I fucking with the democratic process? Why do you think a superior candidate like Romney lost to McCain? The dems did it first, now they got the same thing done to them. I will do as I please.

Maybe being a teen in the '80s was not that bad after all. Me and my friends just had to see CHUD when it came out- just for the title. Man, that movie is awesome. It was one of the few mid-'80s cheese/gore -fests that I did not feel cheated on spending my $4.75 on... And the Quiet Earth- just friggin awesome. You don't see movies like that anymore.
Also.

I agree with the remake of the Wicker Man. It is a great comedy! Nic Cage punching women, bicycles, bees and bear suits! C'mon, set this to music and you've got the Rocky Horror Picture Show! Let's do the Bear Punch again!
