Obama is still something of a blank slate, but Armison did as good a job as could be expected for an early run at the character. In fact, most of the great Presidential SNL impressions over the years: Carvey's Bush Sr., Hartman's Clinton, Hammond's Clinton, Ferrell's Bush Jr., have started shakey. It takes time.

And as for SNL bashing Republicans? I can say, as a registered Republican, that we are VERY bashable. And you should avoid the super-liberal Huckabee-booking SNL and simply confine your viewing to The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, MADtv and all the other shows that never bash Republicans.

I was mostly just having some fun with an arcane Star Wars/ Muppets reference; but if we were to grade on the curve, and SNL was in fact third rate, that would not be saying much at all for MADtv, Mencia et al.

The last show that used a variety format to true comical effect was Chapelle's Show. Dave Chapelle was consistantly funny on that program. However, it was so good he couldn't keep up the pace. So after 32+ years SNL is likely going to be showing some wear and tear.

The opening was okay, the grandpa skit was pretty good (and I would LOVE to see SNL hire a full-time old dude who could keep pace), the period piece was pretty funny, etc. Wiig's hot air balloon ad was so random that it ended up being charmingly funny - that might have been the highlight of the evening.

But I can't believe anyone on the planet thought that Armisen was any good as either Obama or Chigurh - or that that episode of SNL could be called "hilarious." The rest of the show (most of which I saw) was pretty forgettable at best, with lots of potential ("Milkshake") but no real follow-through.

At least Wilco is there this week. That gives us +2 segments that are definitely worth watching.

These clips didn't make me laugh out loud, like I do at Colbert/Futurama/'88-'98 SNL/etc, but they were amusing. Huckabee has surprisingly good timing. Grandkids was a cute idea. The debate sketch was flat-out awful. I mean, the premise had potential, but it wasn't fun, and Armisen's Obama is not funny or accurate (at least be one of those if not both!) Anyway, I'm not inspired to watch SNL again from these clips, but I may check out clips from the next show online, if I remember. Mild amusement is better than no amusement at all.

I just vote in the primaries in an effort to nominate the weakest imaginable candidate. In the general elections I always vote Democratic. I encourage all to adopt the same strategy.

Now if we're to compare variety shows of human history to SNL, I find "Toonces, The Cat Who Can Drive A Car" FAR funnier than "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" I can, in fact, give you a very long list of SNL sketches I found funnier than anything I saw on "Chappelle's." (This is not to say I didn't laugh at "I'm Rick James, Bitch!" But "Toonces" was the cat's meow. If you will.)

My defense of SNL regarding its mocking of Republicans is not complex enough to be creepy, dishonest or petty, really. It is merely this: Where are these sketch shows that never mock Republicans? SNL should not be singled out for mocking Republicans just because it does so in a more entertaining manner.

And, yes, SCTV was hilarious and wonderful, even as it framed virtually every sketch as a TV show.

A man having "cyber sex" with a girl who turns out to be a hairy Chris Elliott. Yeah, riotous. John Travolta as "Gay Dracula". Yeah, hilarious. The "Nut-terrific" candy bar jingle (which drills through my head to this day)..."It's nut-very good." Neither is the sketch. I'll take "I Drink Your Milkshake" over that garbage any day. Even those of you who didn't like it, you have to admit that Will Forte telling Plainview to tell his "wife" (Chigurh) to leave him alone was very funny.

Because guys pay absolutely no attention to her (kinda like the "blind date" nightmare) and women tire of her artificial intelligence. She's anti-Obama, no surprise. Clinton is a woman (?) and, her corruption notwithstanding, is qualified to be president. Did you hear the whiny bitch (Clinton) plugging SNL to the media? DURING A DEBATE!! I suspect the anti-Obama rhetoric will leak into tonight's tired skits. Naturally, Republican-bashing is entirely predictable (even I'm sick of it) but SNL was never impartial; not unlike Fey's "humor", the shit is always predictable. 1994-95 was not the worst for SNL. Jim Downey was showrunner that season. Writers on staff that season included Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, Norm Macdonald, Al Franken, Sarah Silverman, Tim Herlihy, Herb Sargent and Marilyn Suzanne Miller.

Elliott's co-stars that year included Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Macdonald, Mohr, Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Kevin Nealon and Mark McKinney.

Besides Elliott’s completely hilarious “Dracula’s Not Gay,” sketches that year included “Total Bastard Airlines,” “The Ron Wood Show,” “Bathroom Monkey,” “Joycelyn Elders Press Conference,” “George Foreman: Incredible Hulk,” “Scottish Soccer Hooligan Weekly,” “Sea Park,” “Zagat’s,” “Steve Martin’s Famous Penis Crème,” “Where’s Superman?” “Bob Swerski’s Super Fans,” “Christopher Walken For Skittles,” “Matt Foley in Venezuela,” and “Polar Bear Cage.” Macdonald was anchoring Update. Mike Judge contributed several “Office Space” cartoons.

My vote for the show's true, absolute nadir:

1983-84: Joe Piscopo, Gary Kroeger, Tim Kazurinski, Brad Hall, Robin Duke, Jim Belushi, Mary Gross, Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Writers like Michael O’Donoghue, Brian Doyle-Murray, Rosie Shuster, Marilyn Suzanne Miller, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield were long gone. Piscopo was now on the writing staff. Eddie Murphy contributed a handful of generic, pre-taped solo sketches, then left early in the season to make “Beverly Hills Cop.” Sketches that season included “What Would Frank Sinatra Do?” “Boy George Burns,” “I Married A Monkey,” and “Ghandi and the Bandit.”

Wasn't 85-86 the bad one?

People remember the shitty Anthony Michael Hall and Terry Sweeney stuff, but forget brilliant stuff like Vlad the Impaler, Die Foreigner Die, Master Thespian, Fisherman's Treasure, Limits of the Imagination and Tornadoville.

A much underrated season, and underrated largely because it had to follow the one-season all-star cast of Martin Short, Chris Guest, Rich Hall, Billy Crystal, et al ...

SNL's Clinton pandering
by bobwiley

Their pandering for Clinton is really starting to get on my fucking nerves. With the opening sketch and last week's comments from Tina Fey, it seems like they have their head totally up Hilary's snatch. While I still think that there's a good sketch every now and then on the show (even if if they're usually only the Digital Shorts), it's starting to be pretty clear that SNL is a little behind on the times if they keep insisting on creating all of these pro-Clinton sketches.

Sorry, but the job of the media is not to cheer on Obama to victory. 'Cause this show is LAME. Hillary Clinton plugged SNL during the previous debate. Now that SNL is reciprocating, she'll likely plug the show in all of her subsequent appearances (debates included). Maybe she'll replace Seth Meyers. Her only experience is sucking up to the media. As for Sharpton and Jackson, they're are nearly as corrupt as Mrs. Clinton (Bill's hand puppet).

Considering the shittiness of the skits in the past 2 weeks, is there ANY benefit to a politician linking themselves to SNL? I figure SNL pimping out one candidate or another is a liability rather than a benefit for the candidate.

Second ep back from being off for months and this is what we get? Yikes, maybe Tina Fey did write the entire (good) ep last week. P.S. She's smart and sexy. Deal with it haters.

I hope not. He's suck a great and well developed character. I hope they're not going to replace him with Martha Jones. I love her character too, but I'd much rather have both of them. I'd also like to see them bring Billie Piper onto the show, though mostly just to see a hot three-way with her, Martha, and Jack, but that's just me. Ahem....

I'm no SNL hater...in fact its been one of my favorite shows but tonights was shit. What the fuck is up with Armisen's Obama? Thats the best they can up with? I think theres a reason why he only had three lines in the entire sketch. I think the key to this show is the host. Ellen Page is cute but she was out of her element. Theres a reason why every time Alec Baldwin is on the show its hilarious. They hit a new low tonight...I might have cracked a smile a few times but thats about it. First, think back to 2003 and the lead-up to the Iraq War. SNL was embarrassing pro-war and had dumb sketches about the UN and weapons inspectors.

And finally, it's comedy show. Of course it's going to be mostly liberal-leaning because conservativism is just not funny.

Your moment to deflate Obama and lift Hillary passed during the writers' strike, and there's no getting it back.

The irony may be that those conservative moguls who forced the strike and prevented you from sideswiping Obama practically every week for the past four months may have tilted the election to the Democrats in November, as Obama is way more electable than Hillary.

They're called "The Half Hour Comedy Hour"... huh? what? What's that, you ask?

Exactly.

They may have turned liberal into some kind of an insult over the last 15-20 years, but making Conservative comedy work? Might as well try making local morning shows funny. Dennis Miller has tried it a few times and it just comes off as creepy and misguided. Conservative comedy. Say that a few times in your head and see if you can start to understand why it doesn't work. Making good economic policy? Fine. Comedy? Not fine.

There aren't any conservative (or neocon) comics because hatemongering theocratic fascists aren't funny. Disasterous foreign policy isn't funny. Raping the economic well-being of the middle, working, and poor classes isn't funny either. Unless, of course, your old, fat, white, and filthy fucking rich and are directly making money off of the suffering of the middle, working, and poor classes. THEN, and only then, is the untold suffering of millions engineered to make a handful of people filthy rich funny. The very few benefiting by the suffering of the untold multitudes being the one true guiding principal of the Republicans, the NeoCons, the Conservatives. Tell me I'm wrong.

I realize fanboys hear that a lot. However, for 99.9% of the world, SNL is a show to watch casually when you don't have anything better to do at 11:30 pm on a Saturday night. It's just a way to pass a hour and a half and most of us don't give it a second a thought the next day. On the other hand, this encyclopediaish knowledge of the program that you display is scary. This isn't "Trek" or "Buffy" or any other show that holds up to repeated viewings or deep analysis. It's a hit or miss sketch comedy. For you to be this obsessed with this particular show really points up the need for you to get out more and broaden your interests.
