It looks like a really cute, charming little children's movie, and what's wrong with some non-ironic imaginative fare in a world poisoned by the self-satisfied smugness seen in comments like the one I refer to above?

content that requires an R rating = something that would actually get me excited. What are they waiting for? Didn't their contract with Disney expire awhile back? Even if Disney wouldn't let them do it because of contractual shit couldn't they start up a satellite company that could make grittier movies?

Since i've already started to go there, I may as well bring it up: Pixar remaking AKIRA in a version closer to the books than the original anime-- rather than whoever doing the live-action disaster that is supposedly in the works-- would be just about the most mind-blowing movie news of my life.

I mean IMAGINE THAT SHIT!! A pot smoking alien can dream, i guess...

Classic Pose for a Blessing
by PunchWasFramed
Feb 28th, 2008
02:07:38 PM
Left hand to the chest/right hand raised is a classic pose for a blessing. It is found in other cultures, but in Christian iconography, two fingers are held up, and the hand is often tilted. If Wall-E were human, his left hand would be over his heart. The tilt of his raised right hand, along with the upward direction of his gaze creates a "pregnant" moment- tension created by something not quite touched(ie the image of Adam and God reaching towards each other on the Sistine ceiling.) The pose suggests Wall-E's attempt to connect his heart to space(a surrogate in this case for God or enlightenment.) The use of the iconic pose is meant to create an emotional connection the character and the audience. Without identifying the pose, a person reacting subconsciously will either gladly accept the positive emotion conveyed and will connect on some deep level to the character, or they will feel manipulated and get angry. Personally, I think the best art connects with us on a conscious as well as subconscious level, and it communicates emotion by drawing emotion out of us. If they pay as much attention to the detail of the character animation as they did to this one pose, its gonna be a great movie.

my point is, they are making a shite load of money off what they are doing, so until they have a box office failure (and it will likely take more than one failure) they're not going to stray to far from what they've already put out.

i could see them creating a separate division for more adult themed animation.

as for The Departed, the parts were greater than the sum of the whole...

when in any interview, a question regarding Short Circuit or E.T. is posed. You can already tell the guy's a stubborn ass who has been hearing the comparisons for the past couple of years, and now that it's in the public eye, he's hearing it even more.

I'm confident the movie will be great, but the design is so borderline-rip-off, it's glaring. Stanton needs to just shut up, quit whining, and admit they borrowed ideas to make it work.

Pixar's Target Market...
by Happyfat73
Feb 28th, 2008
05:13:07 PM
Pixar has perfected pitching their films to the 4 quadrant market - that is, Male & Female, Young & Old. They make films with the potential to reach every demographic. That's gold in box office terms.

Yes, it does involve a bit of pandering to the lowest common denominator, but as long as they keep guys like Brad Bird (who can make formula more palatable than anyone else this side of Spielberg) then I reckon they might as well stick to what's working for them. If it ain't broke and all that.

that a certain segment of geeky folks reach a certain age and think everything should be dark, ironic and made just for them. "Why isn't every animated movie R-rated anime?" What's wrong with making movies for kids. There are a lot of TERRIBLE kids movies. Pixar shook things up and made films adults can actually like, without being "hip" self-referential and full of pop culture references. And Incredibles was much more adult than people are giving it credit for. I think you have to either have kids or nieces and nephews to get to the point where you can appreciate something kids can watch that isn't smug and cynical.

...just be happy that you won't have to sit through a flick that doesn't make some attempt to appeal to adults, like Teletubbies, or Power Rangers.

I understand that not all people are into the technical aspect of film-making, but there is whole world out there that you're missing if you only look at a kid's movie on the surface.

Whether it's entertaining to you or not, that's a personal choice. The movie is made for kids. If you're not a kid, there is less chance that you'll enjoy it. I suppose it is easier to enjoy a movie if you're able to suspend (a certain amount, anyway) disbelief. It seems like many people can't, in our reality-obsessed global culture.

The sheer volume of manpower involved in the production, on the other hand, is amazing. Especially on large sets, fx, and animated films (CGI included). I dig appreciating the good ones and rip on the lesser too, but still find the whole process facinating, regardless if it's a family, fantasy, sci-fi, romcom, or dramedy.

Wall-E looks to be another big release for Pixar, who IMHO hasn't faltered from it's formula since inception and I love 'em for it. Sure there's been a few that I haven't felt as good about, but their worst is still better than most animation studios have ever put out (again, IMHO), and that's saying something. I have enjoyed many classic and modern animation films.

As in, for people in general. They don't target kids, adults, men, women or any other subset group specifically. They target people, and Hollywood would do well to learn from that.
