They should have went with a complete reboot. How are they going to rationalize that the events of any future movies, that will only follow the re-casted crew, will be different than the original show and movies? Now they are going to have to deal with stupid fanboy questions like this for the life of the new film series. Good luck, fellows.

If they use time travel as an excuse to bring all the geezers out to play, I would be disappointed. Spock is alright cuz he's an alien, and, well, he's SPOCK. Still, having Nimoy in the film is toeing the line of "too much." The Shat is great, and Takei is great, but the first step of a reboot is to give the boot to as much of the old preconceptions as possible without losing the core story. Hence, old actors are the first to go. Let 'em go gracefully.
Here's an idea.

It's bad enough Time Travel is involved in the first place. But what purpose would it solve to reunite all the cast as periphery characters?

And Kirk is still alive in the Nexus. They can always get him out from there (Guinan was still there after she left).

The Kirk-reborn stories sucked, btw.

I'm not hating on Trek, I'm just saying I don't understand why this thing is being treated by the studio like a huge tentpole release. While some of the previous films were fairly successful, I can't imagine why the studio thinks this will gross anymore than say 120 million domestic. Not a bad figure at all, but I'm sure that between the budget and marketing costs for this thing it's going to have to make a hell of a lot more than that (both domestic and foreign) to really be a sucess. Plus, I'm not sold on the fact that J.J. Abrams' name can open a movie the way that someone like Spielberg or Lucas or Shymalan can. Thoughts, anyone?

So he may or may not be in the movie just as much as Shatner may or may not be in the movie? And? It would be great if they were, it would be even better if there were news that actually confirmed it. The "Oh MY" at the beginning of the article title implies excitement and surprise. This is not concrete enough to be exciting, and even if he came and out said "yes I am in it," it would surprise no one. Former show members having a cameo in the movie is sort of expected, yeah?

Darlena Tejeiro and Paul Townsend are to have roles in Star Trek XI. "As reported at Trekmovie.com, actor/stuntman Townsend will be playing the part of a Starfleet security officer, with several scenes in the movie. Townsend is no stranger to working on Star Trek, having been seen before on Star Trek: Enterprise, where he appeared as a gunfighter and was also a stuntman in the episode North Star."

"Tejeiro's role is unknown at present, although she will not be playing an Orion. Her filming work in Star Trek XI has already been completed."

...Corporate-think, as usual. "That one where Kirk and crew went back to now-a-days to save the whales made more money than any of the others... if you do Trek, you have to do time travel" The worst Trek plots in all the Trek series were all time travel plots... Trek time travel is idiotic. Especially if it involves travel to the moronic, ridiculously-designed 1960's retro-future of the original series, which is what Abrams is obviously up to... a cinematic version of that stupid effin' Deep Space Nine episode where they traveled back to the Trouble with Tribbles episode... that was an hour out of my life I'll never get back. Abrams comes up with some great stuff, but also some lousy stuff... remember, this is the guy who wanted to make Lex Luthor a Kryptonian! This movie will... WILL suuuuuh-uuuuuuh-UCK!

Why redeaux, retconn, reboot, this thing, honestly, man? Star Trek was great for its time, but with every generation there are fewer and fewer Trekies. The further that we go from the Space Race the less relivent the explorer spirit is to the new kids. I'm a teacher and most of my students don't even see the point of going to Mars. They laugh at it. They just don't get it, that worries me. They don't have that hunger to see what's beyond their X-Boxes. And to take the one show that really had the ability to make you think, and inspire you to go out there and turn it into drival with time travel every second movie and then to reboot it to conform to a generation that alreay doesn't care... Why bother? If you want to reboot Star trek let it lie for anohter decade, and the come back with a new show about new characters... and for the love of God this time make it good.

Ok, Kirk might be a bit fatter now, but that could easily be explained with Shatner-Kirk saying something like "I want to look good for my inspection of Cameron Fry's new Enterprise, which is coming up soon. I think i'll go on a diet!" at the end of his final scene in the new movie. Presto!

But what I expect to see in JJ's re-bootious Trek is a scene where the Enterprise has crash-landed on a beach, but the engines are still going and, like, somebody walks by one of the engines and they're, like, sucked into it causing a BIG EXPLOSION, and then, like, the camera goes all shakey when a big freakin monster shows up, but, like, off-screen, and starts shredding and melting a bunch a people and sh*t... because THAT'S the kind of action that I've come to expect from Mr. Abrams.

Just a thought, but what if there is a flashback to Kirk's funeral in the 23rd century? You could have Sulu, Chekov, Uhura and Spock there. It's just as bad as remaking a movie, only not quite as lazy. An Original Series prequel would have been cool as long as they kept it campy and silly like the old show. Polyester costumes and female crew members in miniskirts and go-go boots would ROCK! But I get the feeling this will be a big pile of wank. "Isn't he the gay Trekkie? by leobloom" All Trekkies are gay, dumbass. As Artie Lang said: "Shatner is a hero among legions of Star Trek fans who call themselves... Oh yeah, QUEERS!" Takei is still cool. Lisa Lampanelli said it best: "Being gay and Japanese isn't all bad -right, George? You can bow down to say hello and take it in the ass at the same time." Don't be dissing Shatner's Kirk! Given what a fan George Takei is of Trek, it seems reasonable that he'd just want to meet J.J. Abrams... Given how frequetly Takei cameos in Trek it does make sense - giving him a walk-on role is almost part and parcel to the content, but it's very funny that this article went up when it did.

discussion a few months ago, or was it someone else I was chatting with? If it was done well, like Sci-Fi re-booted Galactica I would see it. Reboots/remakes/reimaginings are always a crapshoot. I'd love to see Koenig as Koenig though. Don't turn it into a fisticuffs flick, but a real suspense/action/thriller, and it could work. Not a Chekov Koenig of course, but a Bester Koenig. He should smack the next person to ask him to say "nuclear wessels."

even had the same headline. This obviously takes place during or after the TNG and then before TOS. So Sulu is either DEAD or a 30 year old. No Takei, no room for you.

Why would they put Nimoy in but not Shatner? If this is a time travel/alt time line there is no reason not to have Shatner in the film.
Quit bitchin'... Some of us fans be excited.

It's called an alternate timeline, kids - no need to serve the continuity gods. If you don't like Trek, go back to your Veronica Mars TB - if you do but you hate TOS or this concept or JJ Abrams then stay home and enjoy a nice warm mug of Klingon Shut the Fuck Up.

Almost all remakes or re-visionings leave me cold. But "Space:1999" was a good concept, and it doesn't have too much baggage dragging it down (unlike Trek). They could make a few changes or a lot of changes, without having to turn it into either a lame homage to the original series or into some gawdawful updating that dumps all over the original.

Somewhat related: There was supposed to be a "U.F.O." remake series in the works, but it collapsed.

metaphysical stuff a la Star Trek V, and go straight for the survive at all costs fight for your life action then it would work very well. This show came to the US around '76. I know because I was in first grade, and there were all the toys and lunchboxes out there. This probably planted the merchandising seed in Lucas' brain. But anyway, it was set about 20 years in the future. So to do it today as 2099 would be great. What U.F.O. series are you referring to by the way. Was it Project U.F.O, because I remember that one vaguely.
"U.F.O." was a series from the same producer

and it seemed to be connected, as if in the same universe. It was about a secret organization fighting alien invasion. http://tinyurl.com/36bd6x
