No Criterion for Anderson??
by Konigsberg
Feb 26th, 2008
06:31:00 AM
Well that just adds to my belief that people are getting tired of Anderson being a one note filmmaker. There's a difference between having a certain style, say Woody Allen, and then having a very specific style which every decision in every film gets filtered through. Finally Criterion has recognized this and for the first time since Rushmore aren't giving into this. Good work Criterion!

so glad you liked day zero, it's been sitting atop a stack of DVD's for the past week or so, been looking forward to watching it but was worried because it was barely in theaters. the smurfs blurb was classic. i loved darjeeling and don't understand the hate. i think the first half of that movie is the best writing wes has ever done. definitely gotta see Them even though The Eye was terrible. almost paid to see 30 days of night three times in the theater but I got scared off after my roommate hated it. i also remember being the only person in a 5-man group to enjoy Beowulf. I wonder if the lack of 3-D will make a significant difference in terms of sheer enjoyment. strong work again harold, keep it up. good to see you churning these out with regularity again.

"Let's say if John McCain gets elected."

I despise ideologues, Harry. I despise them on both sides, because they truly don't know how stupid they sound when they let ridiculous statements like that escape their mouths. They don't understand how much of a slave they are, listening to others to know what to believe in. Sheep.

First of all, there's a reason why the military in this country is the best it's been since WWII. IT'S ALL VOLUNTARY. There's a saying we have in the Marine Corps: U Signed the Mother-fucking Contract.

The draft will never be reinstated, and for people to even insinuate it would be is ideological bullshit. Especially if they insinuate John McCain would do so. ESPECIALLY if they say "if he gets elected" like that gives him the power to do so without consent of Congress.

Harry, for the love of God, for someone who claims to love things like individuality and open-mindedness, you're a sheep who's only open-minded to his own beliefs.

Open your fucking eyes, stop inundating every word you write with your ideology and free your mind from slavery. Politics should be about voting your consciences, voting for the best person, no matter what party they are, or what color or gender they are. That's the way Jefferson wanted it. Man, I thank God I'm not a devoted slave like you or Rush Limbaugh or Al Franken or Ann Coulter.

"Imagine if John McCain got elected," well, Harry, I know that freezes your heart, but I can think of scarier things than 4 years of a moderate who doesn't walk in lockstep with his party, who gets along with the Democrats and doesn't mind working TOGETHER for real change, instead of you know, just talking about this abstract thing, "change," like one of the other candidates. That being said, I haven't yet made up my mind (isn't it great to actually be able to use your mind instead of it being enslaved to the left or the right? I think it is) yet, but when I do, my conscience, not ideology will guide me. No political party tells me what to believe in or who to vote for.

We know you're a fucking slave, Harry. So, for the love of God, stop reminding us with every post you write.

Feb 26th, 2008

Can be translated as "This is only the second film I've seen with Javier Bardem, but it wasn't as good as No Country For Old Men". Harry will now race to IMDB and make a list of all of Javier's previous 'classics' as proof that he's a 'big fan'. I'm not bitter or anything, just suspicious of how the big man finds the time to do all of things he claims to do. Unless he's discovered a way of squeezing more than 24 hours out of a day? Still, as long as he likes Wes Anderson, he'll be okay in my book...

Haven't seen this but plan to tonight, more for Danny Huston's vampire leader than Josh "2X4" Hartnett, and I thought Hard Candy was pretty damn good, although it too, kind of fell apart at the end. And considering his role in The Proposition, and the opinion of some that Daniel Day Lewis was "impersonating" John Huston; a game of what if...what if Danny Houston was cast in There Will Be Blood instead..? That would have been interesting casting, not taking anything away from DDL.

Beowulf not in 3D because you need 2 projectors to do it.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
Feb 26th, 2008
09:03:49 AM
To achieve 3D you need 2 projectors, 1 to project polarized content horizontally, the 2nd to project the content vertically. The 3D glasses are polarized so one eye sees the horizontal and the other sees the vertical. The brain then translates the images into waht we call 3D. You need two projectors that line up perfectly and can synchronize. If you didn't see the 3D in the theater, then you won't see it at home.

That may be the reason the studio is touting for not including the 3D version of Beowulf, but the reality is they could at least include an anaglyph version along with pack-in 3D glasses. Yes I know that anaglyph 3D is inferior to the polarized 3D we saw in the theatres, but it'd still be miles higher than simply watching the title in 2D. When vituallu every shot was composed specifically to be seen in a 3D rendering, then audiences will be less than wowed with this if they didn't catch it in its 3D theatrical run. Me? I transferring my copy to anaglyph 3D via Adobe Premiere, and making sure all my friends and family see it that way...

Take it from me Harry, real women are waaaaay sexier, even compared to Jessica Rabbit. Also I think I have to agree with m_prevette on Wes Anderson. His movies seem like they just found the ugliest sets and clothing imaginable and just let the actors say whatever pops into their heads. Don't get me wrong, improve can be great (if you're Christopher Guest and you know what's funny)but there needs to be a sensible story in there somwhere. Also if you want to live in Wes Anderson's world, I can't imagine how sad your life is. I wouldn't wish that reality on my worst enemy.

Bootleg 3D Beowulf discs
by Sith Witch
Feb 26th, 2008
09:22:04 AM
I encourage everyone to make anaglyphic 3D transfers of Beowulf. It's been a widespread practice for many on other examples of studios dropping the ball on 3D titles (The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Flesh for Frankenstein, Friday the 13th 3, Jaws 3D, Amityville 3D, et al). If films can be as successfully released in 3D on DVD as Freddy's Dead was nine years ago, there's clearly no excuse for them not to be now. Sure it's the ol' red-and-blue experience, but not anything you can't get used to within the first few minutes. I'd much prefer that every time to standard 2D viewings, ESPECIALLY when the film was specifically shot to be seen from those angles. Otherwise it neuters the film and robs many shots (ala the nude fight scene) of their context.

God luck with that, but you know it won't achieve the same effect. If anaglyph worked well every film would use it. Plus it doesn't work if you are color-blind, which a fair percentage of people are. 3D is the wave of the future, the gimmicky wave.

Yes, I know it won't be as awesome as the polarized version is. I often convert titles and while it's definitely a step up from the 2D versions (assuming you're converting something that was shot-for-3D), it's not as great as the polarization method. I do tend to forget however how many people are colour-blind, so that's a good point.

... it's not that I think Harry is trying to indoctrinate us, though, as evidenced by node32774 (what's the 32774? must be his SLAVE number), there are people stupid enough to believe Harry's uneducated, ideological thought process, I'm just tired of wanting to read a simple DVD column and instead, having to read, well, Harry's uneducated, ideological thought process.

McWeeny doesn't seem to have the need to jizz his personal ideology all over his columns with orgasmic joy like Harry does. Then again, I'd hope that Drew was smart enough to not be a slave, but who knows.

Most of the film was pretty solid and while the ending was a bit weak it was far from the level of mediocrity Harry is claiming. As vampire flicks go it was intense and unique and, as I understand it, pretty accurate to the comics. I certainly liked it better than Hard Candy, which is easily one of the most overrated “horror” films of the last few years. It was also leagues better than several of the more recent “well-received” horror movies including Hatchet and The Rise of Leslie Vernon. Beowulf looks amazing and I’m looking forward to owning it but I’m still unhappy about the liberties they took with the original story. Lastly, Frontier looks great and I’m hoping it lives up to the hype. Superman: Doomsday was pretty weak so perhaps this new Justice League movie is proof that DC animation moving in a positive direction.

I still love you, Silent Bob!).

Let's leave the ideology out of it, especially when we're not talking about a piece shit like "Redacted" or even a well thought-out documentary (you know, like a REAL documentary, not the films Michael Moore makes) like "No End in Sight" which convinced me after watching it that not only would The Surge work, but it should have been done at the very beginning. Regarding Wes Anderson and Bay
by TheLastCleric
Feb 26th, 2008
10:00:24 AM
I think the Wes Anderson/Michael Bay comparisons are astute. Both men essentially have one note portfolios and neither man seems to want to go beyond that one note to expand or grow as a filmmaker. Anderson likes to make meandering, quirky character films that explore the minutia of strange and divergent people and Bay likes to make bombastic, loud action films that treat the characters like ancillary materials. These men may be working on opposite ends of the spectrum but both seem incredibly limited in their scope and choice of projects.

The same asshole whose policies have created no toehr option but military service for thousands? Well, thank God we have expert40 to let us know what's really going on in the world. Yes, of course all the men and women in uniform volunteered specifically to "kill innocents". You know, innocents line Saddam and his goons, who tortured (real torture, not like ours) and killed and raped (in both a figurative and literal sense) and gassed, and who we now remain in Iraq to protect. That's right expert, we are not stealing their oil, if we were, gas prices would likely be a little lower. Iraq doesn't really have anything we want. We are there protecting the scumbags, the vast minority (Sunis) who the oppressed majority want to rip limb from fucking limb. Which is why I think we should get the fuck out, as soon as we impose our own definition of "success" on the argument. My definition would have been "Saddam dead" "Sunis out of power". But we are past that now. Which brings us to McCain's stupid "100 years" comment. Only totally moronic idiots, like you expert, take that to mean he is in favor of endless war. Whether you agree or not, and I assume most of the people on this site don't, all he is saying, to our enemies, is that we won't leave as losers. Frankly, I think protecting the Sunis is bullshit, and I would have no problem if we let the sheites (sp?)kill every fucking one of them. What would most Americans say if someone told us, "Well, those guys who raped your mother and sister in front of you and then blew their brains out have been removed from power, and are now just equal citizens with you, and you have to forgive and forget."? That is what we expect, and it isn't going to happen. Anybody see "Redacted"? Not a bad film, but reminded me of a Jack Black video remake of "Casualties of War". Really, just a re-make of a far superior film, but worth watching. HD DVD is dead, no doubt about it. But, unless something really bad happens, I will still be able to watch my HD DVD's in six months. I have to say, as much as I love Blu-ray, I think the picture is better on HD DVD's. From a technical standpoint, I can't figure out why, particularly since I watch Blu-ray over an HDMI connection and HD DVD over component cables. Seems like Blu-Ray has better sound, and less grain, but that's because it is softer. However, at the moment, I am watching Across the Universe over and over again on Blu-Ray, taking time out to play Resistance: Fall of Man. I have two laser disc machines, one a commercial model, and one prototype that my uncle helped build. Both still work. I may pick up a $100.00 HD DVD machine in the next few months, and just keep it in the box until my 360 doesn't work any more. I will be enjoying my HD DVD titles for years to come, thank you. BTW, Last Emperor is one of the great films, and if you haven't seen it, put it on top of your list.

My point was that Criterion has let some garbage into their canon, I was not suggesting that Bay and Anderson make similiar films.

But you obviously thought it through when you decided I'm a moron. I mean, I suggested that Michael Bay makes crap, therefore I must be a moron. I thought The Life Aquatic was a bad movie, therefore I must love Meet the Spartans? Of course. Rumours of an eventual Criterion release are an absolute fact and mean that a movie is good? I don't think so, but then again, I'm a moron, right? The fact that I am interested in Criterion releases with the exception of Kevin Smith and Michael Bay is a clear indication that my tastes go towards Meet the Spartans. I don't think it's a good idea for Criterion to assume that anything Anderson wants to do will be a groundbreaking classic and automatically put in their collection. But I'm a total moron for thinking that!

In your case for me beign stupid that's Exhibit A right there! A promising filmmaker has NEVER in the history cinema gone on to a hit and miss career or produced a bad movie. To think, if they'd signed up Franic Ford Copola early we could have JACK: The Criterion Edition and THE RAINMAKER: The Criterion Edition. Or if they'd gotten in on the ground floor with David Fincher and we'd have PANIC ROOM enshrined as the indisputable timeless groundbreaking movie about transition effects that it was.

Beowulf and Them..

I loved Beowulf, but have yet to see since that first time in 3-D. Harry, you sound significantly more muted in your enthusiam for it above than you did when it was first released. Does it hold up well on repeat viewings? You sort of infer it does, but anyone who hadn't read your initial review wouldn't get that you loved the movie from above. Im planning on picking it up this afternoon, but I'd hate to have one of those experiences where, once outside the theater, the movie is significantly lacking. Them is a creepy little movie, but I think the "twist" late in the game actually made some of what happened sort of implausible.

Harry, is the Justice League movie really that good? I love the cover. Will have to give this one a chance.

Possibly the coolest release this week is the Curse of the Black Scorpion or whatever it was called above. I have this on dvd as The Banquet and it's a mighty cool movie. If you are looking to be drenched in visuals, check it out.

Finally, a question. Wanted an honest opinion so didnt post this over in the Babylon 5 talkback, but is Crusade(the followup series) any good? Im slowly making my way through B5 the series right now and have all five seasons based on the reccomendation of a friend and an extremely cheap sale at Best Buy and was wondering if Crusade is similarly worth owning. It's currently being sold for 14.99 over at deep-discount, hence my questions of it's quality.

is the possibility of Criterion getting off the fence. 'Cause if you think they're going to do low-bandwidth/720p digital downloads you've got another think coming.

Not saying we won't eventually have high bw equal to discs but that's years away. Why do people think that somehow a download a few gigs in size is as good as a dual-layer HD-DVD or BD? If it were possible to get that sort of quality at that size don't you think the discs would do the same thing and then use the disc capacity to make it even better? Weird.

... this much is true-ew, Rushmore or The Royal Tennenbaums counts as trash. Neither does Chasing Amy, which is a great, great film.

I think Criterion does its job in preserving great films for posterity's sake. I actually like The Life Aquatic, as well.

Are some filmmakers one-note Joes? Yeah, they are. But as long as they put out quality work, does it matter if they mine the inspiration that works for them? I don't think so.

I'd rather have a filmmaker that does one thing really, really well, like Wes Anderson, than a filmmaker that does a lot of different things poorly, like Tim Story or Paul Worthless Shit Anderson.

I’ll give you Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore, even though I personally found Tenenbaums to be tedious. As to Chasing Amy, there is nothing timeless or particularly great about that film and it certainly isn’t something worth preserving, at least in my opinion. Criterion has been very much hit and miss with their selections and honestly, as much as I enjoy Kevin Smith, I seriously doubt much, if any of his work, will be worth revisiting and discussing decades from now. As for one note directors, I don’t find it particularly admirable that anyone would opt to repeat the same type of film over and over again, regardless of quality. For me Wes Anderson’s apex was Rushmore and since then everything he’s done has felt the same and at times his work has bordered on pretentious. To be fair I haven’t seen DL but nothing in the reviews has suggested it offers anything beyond the typical Anderson blueprint.

I really loved Rushmore, it's still one of my favorite movies. I could see Royal T working for some people, but again, Criterion didn't sit back and let it sink in and think about it. This movie was released direct-to-criterion. And I really like the way Criterion gives exposure to lesser known films and gives good transfers to classics. I'd rather they use their resources for that than releasing nice editions of current well-known movies.

And I actually don't consider Wes Anderson a one note filmmaker. I liked that with Life Aquatic he was taking on an adventure story. In my opinion he did a really bad job, but it showed growth. He has a distinct visual and dialogue style, but I don't feel like I'm always getting the same story or characters from him. The problems I had with Life Aquatic were totally different than the problems I had with Royal T, but I definately disliked both films and didn't consider either groundbreaking or noteworthy or entertaining.

And I actually admire directors for having strong identifiable voices. When you get somebody who writes and directs original movies there's bound to be some overlap and revisitng of themes, and I'm fine with that. It's just that I don't think he's even made a good movie since Rushmore and I'd rather Criterion use their resources for something else.

That's the question. They got plenty of violence past the PG-13 but the scene where he fights Grendel naked and they don't have the balls to show his balls was pretty silly.

The thing about that movie though is they should just re–release it in theaters every once in a while. I saw it twice and enjoyed it but the 3-D is a big part of it and partly makes up for the creepy wax dummy look of the characters. It's like a theme park ride. For me it was one of the better filmgoing experiences of the year but I don't think I ever want to watch it on DVD.

Why does it still look fake. Well theres a big reason right there. That and the skin not having color changes, mainly in the fingertips. Beowulf is one step closer to the prize. The peachfuzz hair on Angelina's face was unbelievable. Hopefully Avatar corrects these wrongs.

Anything else you might have read into my comment... well, that's all you, man. Also, that comment about Meet the Spartans was for the Anderson haters (and a bit extreme, I admit). I think it happens to lots of writer-director type filmmakers, where they have a couple ideas turning over in the back of their heads since they were teenagers and when they get their first crack at making movies the result is something really well thought out and great, but then they get into follow-up material and don't have the time to turn it over in the heads as much as those first ideas and so you frequently end up with mixed unfocussed results.

I know Anderson has good ideas for stories and characters, but his storytelling style is so delicate that he just needs some more time to really think them through before coming back and he needs to feel like he has to prove himself and that Criterion won't automatically have his back.

Justice League Disappointing
by WolfmanNards
Feb 26th, 2008

I was disappointed by justice league new frontier. Especially after the beaming reviews given by this site. With the short running time (a little over an hour)the amount of content that was removed from the graphic novel made for a very erratic almost nonsensical story. We kept jumping jumping jumping from one underdeveloped character or situation to the next. They just tried to jam too much into too little a time frame. The animation was great. Some of the voice acting was good. There were a lot of moments where David Boreanaz was lacking emotion when it was truly needed. And They should have switched the voice actors for Martian Manhunter and Batman. Jeremy sisto just sounds weird. It doesn't fit coming out of batman. It would have been a much better fit coming out of Martian Manhunter. Granted this wasn't as disappointing as Superman Doomsday, it was a disappointment nonetheless.

I actually liked Gheywulf dispite my skepticism it was'nt as bad as i thought, great performances by Hopkins,Winestone,Malkovich and Brendan Gleeson ( The actor from those two underated films 28 Days later and Dark Blue)The ending, however was too open ended. Would have loved to see those same guys helm a CGI movie based on Marvel's Thor.FTW!

30 Days of Night was good for a guilty pleasure and Josh worked with the material he was given, but there was'nt any real explanation of how the Vampires came to be, and Ben Foster's (a promising actor)scenes was wasted. He was much better utilized in Alpha Dog and 3:10 to Yuma.Fuck, John carpenter's Vampires shits all over 30 days and that movie was 10 Years ago.Chris Gore loved it,and recommends buying the DVD, but that's a lame endorsement.

Ronald Fisher: Okay, then, you know what? She fucks them and Vanity watches. Okay?

Sean Smith: What about Papa Smurf? I mean, he must get in on all the action.

Ronald Fisher: Yeah, what he does, he films the gang-bang, and he beats off to the tape.

Donnie: [shouts] First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village. But the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have... reproductive organs under those little, white pants. It's just so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. You know, what's the point of living... if you don't have a dick?

JL New Frontier is rushed for being too short

It's the exact opposite of the TV show Heroes, which is too drawn out with too little action. If you somehow blended the two, you'd have a damn near perfect show. Imagine a whole episode sets up the mysterious "island of dinosaurs," or a whole episodes just devoted to the military and the supers agreeing to work together and then Superman getting ****ed right out of the gate! Seriously, if this movie was the blue print for Heroes Season 3, it'd be the best damned series EVER (if you can't tell a story on this scale with a whole season's budget, you shouldn't be making fantasy TV). But as a 71 minute movie? You need fucking ADD to not find it lacking. The Flagg/Martian Manhunter sub plot was good but had a terrible pay off--largely because they rushed final act. Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman are not well utilized (though with the exception of WW, this seemed to be a conscious effort to give other heroes more screen time which was working for the first 45 minutes). I also got the impression they wanted to fit this whole thing into a lenth that could still be aired on Cartoon Network, and I think that was a mistake--or at least aiming for the sized block they aimed for, shoulda been a half hour longer at least. The Incredibles is still a better Super Hero movie, but at least, of all the DC animated crapfest DVD movies that have come out so far, this came closest to being as good as Pixar's movie and it is the first one I would actually recommend to anyone. And yay for Hal Jordan--who so should have been James Marsden's character in Superman Returns.

I saw it twice this weekend at WonderCon (and got to meet a couple voice actors, Bruce Timm & Darwyn Cooke) and I gotta say that it's everything I could have wanted it to be. I will be the first to admit that having to cut out the Challengers and the Losers was painful, but understandable given the run time. Talking to some of the DC/WB people after the showing, they said that if the movie sells well enough, if it can prove to WB that it's a money maker, they'd all love to do a more complete director's cut, restoring much of what had to be lost.
Torrented a 720p Beowulf.......

Because I'm waiting for Blu-Ray players to go down in price plus the discs. Anyway I saw it in 3D and the whole 3D effect to me was shoddy and gimmicky that I didn't enjoy it all that much because my eyes were trying to adjust throughout the movie. So I decided to get it through other means and see it 2D. I'll say even seeing it 720p looks DAMN good. All the detail they put into the characters was groundbreaking in my opinion. There are still some stiff movements and I think they need to reference horse movement a bit more but nothing ever took me out of the movie. Like Tron, this film is ahead of its time and I don't think a lot of people got why. There are shots that could never be done this way in live action, unless they use a CGI actor, which would destroy the purpose of it all. I would definitely like to see more adult-oriented movies like this but maybe something more sci-fi or steam punkish. I think a Vampire Hunter D film done in this manner would be awesome. Or even more Star Wars films episodes 7-9 with the original actors doing voice over would really work here as well. I just think there are so many possibilities with this technique that Final Fantasy started and Beowulf took a step further.

I got into a fight with one many years ago and the first thing you learn in actual fighting is 'the guy who gets in the first solid punch wins the fight almost every time'. So I made sure I got in the first solid hit against a marine giving me shit and so the myth about American Marines being badasses was dispelled. Again, I repeat... weak-sauce. Truly.

I love all the WB DC cartoons of Batman, Superman, JL etc. But this way below par. I felt nothing for the characters here and the villain is more perplexing than awe inspiring. I wonder if Harry actually watched previous WB DC cartoons? Currently the recent Marvel animated film features are stealing the crown with the magnificent Iron man, The Avengers (though part 2 is a let down), and the Doctor Strange.

I missed it in the theater and rented it tonight, expecting that it would be totally redundant and the point where Wes Anderson wore out his welcome. Instead, I was floored. The dude communicates the awkwardness of life's hardest transitions with none of the fanfare and pomp that cinema has trained me to expect. I also expected that the quirkiness of his other films would shrivel into schtick but was instead treated to a genuinely human picture. I'm glad Wes Anderson exists.

I just watched the DVD and overall I was pleased. It's definitely the most mature storytelling I've seen with animated superheroes. Given the limitations, I think they did a fine job in adapting the comic, I didn't really miss The Losers or The Challengers of the Unknown. I just think that it's unfortunate that technically, the animation is still on the level of an average Bruce Timm produced tv episode. I've seen single episodes of Justice League and Batman that had better animation - more fluid movement and action. An average episode isn't bad, mind you - it's just disappointing, you'd think that being a movie they would have kicked it up a notch!

Surprised even more that what I loved about it was the writing. Not soold on stop mo sadly, the best that I can say is that on is that it didn't distract me all that much. i think on the mosters and on creatures like Golem and king Kong stop mo as a level of human reaction to the creature and elevates the form beyond CGI. But stop mo people are like Americanized Brit shows. Sure at their best their almost as good as the original, but why not just go with the original. you have to hire the actors to voice anyway why not let their real faces bring off the natural unconscious gestures that let us know they're real. But the story of Beowulf's journey from braggart to hero to fallen hero and older wiser king seeking Redemption was brilliantly played and surprise from the shouting sword swinging spectacal I was expecting. Also great to here that Legend of the Black Scorpion is such a winner. Thanks for the heads up Harry I've been seeing this advertised over the net and was wondering if it was any good. Zhang ziyi is such an exquisit beaty and an amazin actress and shew moves beautifully in fight scenes. I was just wondering if the story was a match for the choreography and apparently it is. I loved her in Crouching Tiger, Hero and House of Flying Daggers. Especially Daggers, brilliant movie and it takes her through so many changes. Brilliant. I also liked that one where she courted the schol teacher. A quiet but very sweet film. I also Dug Superman: Doomsday and am also looking forward to Justice League New Frontiers.

Hero But not House of Flying Daggers. Not only is Daggers a better film (Loved Hero but Daggers was better), but Hero had Ziyui on for about five minutes and she had barley any lines. I do not usually agree with Harry's taste, but The New Frontier is pretty fucking good. Batman was surprising voiced well. It's always a little tough not hear Conroy, but he was done extremely well. Dug Flash and even Superman was done well. I was pretty surprised by the whole thing. Didn't really get the whole The Center thing, but maybe I just need to rewatch it.

Jesus, Harry. I'm not surprised it can't touch the comic book, but it doesn't even stand on it's own as a good movie. Just really, really lame. None of the charm or excitement that I expected. They cut all the wrong stuff, and the first half of the movie ended up being a bunch of random scenes that had no flow into eachother. Long, awkward takes... pretty standard animation (Nowhere near as good as the Supes/Doomsday fight animation) and the lamest Hal Jordan voice we could have gotten. Seriously...watch the scene where he meets Abin Sur and gets the ring....NO emotion. Very disappointing.

And the animation there is probably the best I've seen Warner do in house. Some of the shots still look like limited animation while others look more fluid. The voice casting is right on, Conroy as Batman, Hamill as Joker, etc. and the story is more adult-oriented and darker than most animated films.

I remember even seeing this in the theater when it was first released and I remember I didn't want it to end. It was that good of a movie. I've said in the past that it is the BEST Batman movie and I'll even be so bold as to say it is THE BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER!! Yes it kicks Spiderman's live action, campy ass for those who think Spiderman raised the bar. Why WB could never again produce something on this level, Batman or any other DC character is beyond me. I think JLA does a good job but the animation has actually degraded since Batman: MOTP where it should be on the same level or even better. I think the oversimplification of the characters and the somewhat shoddy animation is the reason. The voice cast is good but cmon, if you grew up with Batman: The Animated Series then you just can't picture anyone else doing the voice. Jeremy Sisto does his best but it took me right out of the movie. Though I will say Green Lantern's intro was awesome! Overall it was just a good effort but nowhere near the level of Mask of the Phantasm. I will say I am looking forward to the Batman, Dark Knight release that's coming up. Maybe we'll get to have a bit of the good stuff.

brings to mind a quote from "The Godfather", "They're animals anyway, so let them lose their souls." Right or wrong we stuck our stick into that hornet's nest. Wrong is to just leave the room with the used rubber on the mattress. If we leave now, the population will be easy pickings for Islamo-facists (Iran). Jordan will most likely fall next, if that happens, Israel should look the f out. Stay, clean the place up the best we can, put a few bases there like we did over fifty years ago in Germany and Japan (those are still there, by the way, and very likely to be there another fifty, so there's your hundred years you like crying about) get things stabilized. What we're doing there is finally starting to work.
