"Easy... I know what I'm doing" Ah, now that's some great casting. This actually got me interested in this film, as previously I had little more interest in it than in a film with Paris Olsen of the week. by vadakinX
Feb 25th, 2008

For the sake of DC movies, heck for comic book movies in general, somebody please kill this movie.

You have a huge majority of fans who either din't want this movie at all, or want to wait and and tie it into the solo franchises and only a very small minority who would actually like to see this current version of the project go ahead.

Everything, and I mean everything we've heard about this movie, from the casting to the story has been shockingly bad, and it's shitting all over the current Superman and Batman franchises and not only could it prevent future movies involving Bale and Routh in their respective franchises but could kill DC comic book movies altogether.

Kill this movie!

Also I don't understand the "develop them as separate series" argument. They're talking about giving $200 million to a great director to make this movie, as far as I can see that's a gift to comic fans, right? But instead of accepting it you demand this fantasy of them making a separate series for each one of these characters. Shit, $100 million each for Aquaman 1-3, Green Guy 1–3, Super 2-3, Batman but not realistic so he will make sense with these other freakos 1-3, Martian Man 1–3, Wonder Woman 1-3, etc. Then when they are all done your plan is that you personally will really like all of these series and be happy with their casting, they will all have been successful and popular, the same actors will still be attached, willing and affordable for another movie, and their series will all be designed in such a way that when you put those characters together their universes as depicted in the other movies will fit together and the actors will all have chemistry together. And also it will be exciting to see them all together even though you've already seen all these characters separately in movies and they're not new anymore. By my estimate a conservative figure for the price of this venture would be 2.3 billion dollars not including advertising, and the chances of it all working out would be about 1 in 10,000. So I'm not sure you should hold your breath on that one although I do believe in following your dreams, so I guess keep hope alive fellas.

I know what you're gonna say. But the Avengers! But Vern, there's the Avengers! Avengers! Let me make you a bet on The Avengers. I am betting that if they make that movie, Edward Norton will not be playing the Hulk in it. You really think he's gonna be interested? And by the way, how do you know you're not gonna hate his Hulk just like you inexplicably did Eric Bana's? Seems to me you're counting your eggs before the hen that lays them is even hatched?

Another thing I don't get: the main argument in the beginning was that the movie was being rushed. Now the longer it takes the more you complain.

Anyway, as long as George Miller is making it I can't wait for this movie. But if he gets fed up and does Mad Max 4 instead I won't complain. Your loss.

Avengers movie vs this

After seeing the Ironman trailers and hearing about Hulk, am I the only one excited about an Avengers movie compared to this bullshit? JL has bigger name heros with better back stories (except Flash and Aquaman- they both suck) and they still cant get this right. Even with that fucker Ari Avid- what ever the fuck his name is over at Marvel- an Avengers movie will be better. The only way this works with out Bale or Routh is if they go with an older cast, Batman a few years after BB & DK, Superman after SR. Having them middle aged and needing a team to make it thru another shithole day.

Yeah, that's brilliant. I can't imagine why WB doesn't jump all over that.

In all seriousness, that is a good idea for Batman. The first rumors about the script had an older batman mentoring a younger Superman and Justce League. That would work fine. Supes doesn't age much anyway. We should never see a middle aged Superman unless they're doing an adaptation of Kingdom Come. Middle aged Batman, though, could be all kinds of awesome.

than to put blind faith in a project just because of the director. This is Hollwood we're talking about. No studio would ever give George Miller this budget and these characters and say, "Go for it! You're in charge, buddy." And if this movie could just suck and fade into oblivion, then fine. But it could fuck up two other franchises in the process. Batman, obviously, and Superman. Feb 25th, 2008
11:19:05 PM
There is a way to do it. It's called Worlds Finest.

Before Justice League, make a worlds Finest movie with Bale and Routh. Do this movie after Bats 3 and Supes 3, providing enough time for WB to get Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern up and running.

Worlds Finest is part test, part lead in for JLA. It's main purpose would be to introduce Batman into the larger, sci-fi world inhabited by the other DC heroes, and with Singers Superman to play alongside, it will take some work but it can be done, so that in JLA, when all the other heroes show up, batman won't look out of place. Worlds Finest is a way to introduce batman gradually to that world.

Then, when JLA comes around, Bats and Supes will have finished their solo projects and there will have been enough time for GL, Flash and WW to have at least one movie under their belts.

Martin Manhunter and Aquaman can then be introduced in JLA to spin off into their own movie later on. THAT's how you start the process of doing justice League. It's so obvious but instead of seeing it, WB are blinded by their need to beat Marvel, so once they heard about Avengers, they decided to rush justice league into production to get it out first, resulting in a movie with a terrible cast and a mediocre director.

Your probably right about the many fine people here. Honestly, I feel thrilled at all the comic and sci-fi movies. All I care about is that each movie is a good movie in it's own right, and not so much about canon or casting the same guys or what ever. I just want good movies with the characters I love. As long as I get that, they can do as many different versions, reimaginings, et al as they can get away with. Also, I'm freaking out because I haven't gotten to see the new enterprise yet.
I hope that this hits. HARD.

$200Mil? George Miller? More time to develop it? Characters being recast? It seems pretty promising to me.

I don't care what anyone says, Babe (and Babe 2, for that matter) had some great film-making going on. Happy Feet was a little out there for a kid's movie, but still worked for it's intended audience quite well. I was just a bit disappointed that it featured old, over-cooked, classic rock.

IMHO, if you feel negative about movies intended for children, only because they're kid's flix, then you're missing out. You can see some of the same-type of dynamic action shots in both Babe and Mad Max, if you're able to recognise them. Like the brilliant chase scenes. Yeow!

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, but not right now and not this version. And it doesn't need every hero to have standalone films and then combine them, just batman, supes, green lantern and flash. Martian Manhunter is only JLA anyway, and wonder woman can become the focal point of a JLA movie with Aquaman brought into the mix too. The thing you don't understand is that having them at the same time fucks one or the other up, this is easy for you, someone who knows what aicn is, but for the average person it isn't, and I rather not have this shitty JLA than it taint Nolan's batman and then fuck up the chances of a third batman film. Think about it, the idea of two batmen when One is the most awesome version ever is incredibly stupid.

A reworked version of Tower of Babel.

A reworked version of that story where the JLA were split up as people, with a Kyle Rayner and a Green Lantern running around etc with those fourth dimensional aliens

A slightly reworked version of Starcrossed, that JL cartoon episode, good way to bring hawkgirl and hawkman into the mix, have them revolt against Thanagar and join the league.

Justice - Huge and more like a second sequel but seeing the JLA in Armor, the MetalMen armor is just badass.

If we can't get Bale, then lets get Keaton again. If they want an "older" Batman, he would be a good choice. He is still in good shape, and could easily put the suit back on. Fan boys would be happy. As well, its a nice cap to the old Tim Burton films. For an added bonus, it guarantees that Batman 89 and Batman Returns DVDs get bought up again by a Batman-hungry public. The first two Batman films are still well liked, and tying those two films into the JLA franchise would be a smart business decision for Warner Brothers to make.

One thing that stuck with me when those leaks came out about the JLA script... In the script, it shows Batman spying on all of the members of the Justice League by keeping secret tabs on them. In Tim Burton's "Batman", we see that cool scene where Viki Vale and that reporter guy are looking into a mirror, and then from the other side we see they are on camera. Next, we see cameras all over the place, and catch Bruce Wayne listening in on Commissioner Gordon's conversation with a cop. To me, thats a perfect setup for Batman's behavior in JLA, as we have seen him do it before. It's also a great way of getting Keaton back in as Batman, and using story elements from the first movie to tie into Batman's behavior in JLA.

Does anybody believe THE DARK KNIGHT won't make about ten bazillion dollars? I don't consort with too many comics nerds but in my circle that's been one of the most anticipated movies since the moment Commissioner Gordon flipped over that Joker card and the previously silent audience I saw BATMAN BEGINS with exploded into applause. Everybody I know has been waiting for that movie and who knows what poor Heath Ledger's death will add to that interest. I don't think that series is at any risk. In fact the only risk JUSTICE LEAGUE poses to that series is if their Batman is somehow way better than the Christian Bale one. And if that happens who's gonna complain? Only people who hate excellence.

By most accounts the film has a solid script, a great director, reasonable actors - why the hate. If you have a lot of characters you aren't going to get a ton of A-list stars. What Miller has gone for is people who work in the roles. I've lived through the whole Micheal Keaton is too small, Hugh Jackman is too tall and a song and dance man, Ian McKellan is wrong for Gandalf thing too many times. Until you see the film who knows if it's good, great or a turd? If it gets made and it's a turd then let loose but until you see the finished product all this vitriol is just fanboy whingeing of the most ridiculous kind.

There is one and only one reason to potentially object to a JL film, and that's if the script ain't good. Otherwise you naysayers should understand that just because YOU can't imagine the chosen actors in the roles, or the Miller's JL universe as separate from Nolan's, or whatever else you're claiming will suck, that hmm, maybe you can't imagine these things because your imagination is limited?

Hmm?

Ju st a thought.

As for the arguments of "Nolan's depicted fruits as apples! if Miller depicts fruits as oranges, it'll ruin the apples! then if depicts fruits as wastermelons, it won't match the-- waghhhh! my head is exploding!" ...what kind of cretins are you? can Teen Titans the anime-style comic-based-on-the-cartoon exist with Teen Titans the non-anime-style comic? can Marvel Spider-Man Manga coexist with nonmanga Spider-Man? can the cartoon "The Batman" exist with Nolan's TDK? I feel I should go ahead and spell it out with dozens of more examples of multiple visions of the same material co-existing -- egads -- SIMULTANEOUSLY, because some of you are too stupid to realize that "confusing" is quantum mechanics. "Confusing" is existential philosophies. "Confusing" is NOT two different actors playing Batman in two separate films. Go cry about Parnassus why dontcha.

Just him alone, in a room, with nothing but Stanley Kubrick films to watch. Kubrick's genius should be able to cleanse Singer of his self-obsessed hackery. I'm just waiting until someone does an honest to god review of the script before I dismiss or champion JLA. I think WB has woefully mismanaged the pre-production PR campaign for JLA by being deaf to internet concerns. And for no real good reason. I have faith in George Miller and WETA to deliver a good looking and exciting film, but there has to be something there to work with. And, if there is, I expect things will turn around just as quickly as they did when the first Batman teaser trailer hit in early 1989. I do agree that if you want to do a teamup movie the best way to make it actually happen is to just do it. Not rely on a half dozen separate franchises working out and not stepping on each others toes. And with actors that will never age and be perpetually 30.

A JLA movie without the regular Superman and Batman actors is insane. Apparantly, the in-development Green Lantern and Flash films won't tie in to Justice League either. The whole point of JLA is about familiar heroes teaming up. Without Bale or Routh, this will just be some faux dudes and some other characters who haven't been seen on the big screen before. JLA is not X-Men or the FF. It's the Avengers (which Marvel do seem to have a sensible plan for). If people like Wonder Woman in JLA, won't they be disappointed to see someone else in the role if they then do a solo flick? This whole project stinks, and Miller hasn't made a decent film for adults since Thunderdome in 1985.

Bale DOESN'T WANT anything to do with a JLA movie, even if it was offered to him wrapped in a big bow made out of money, as he's on record as saying that he finds the whole concept of Batman in the JLA stupid. Likewise Nolan doesn't want his Batman films in any way connected to any JLA film series, and again Bale supports him on this. So Bale will never do a JLA movie, so all those bitching that a non Bale JLA will automatically suck are also saying that no JLA movie should be made, ever.

Likewise Routh will never play Superman in a JLA movie because it's borderline right now if there will ever even be a sequel to Superman Returns, and many at Warners want to cut all ties to that movie in regards to the future use of the Superman character anyway. And as far as a sequel goes, Warners will only make one if Singer really wants to do it and can do it on a more reasonable budget and make it into more of an action film, and commits to do so within a certain window, if not then no sequel, and Routh's Superman career is over, which it more than likely is. Instead they will use the Superman from the JLA movie in a spinoff Superman movie, if the actor is well recieved in the role. That's the plan anyway.

As for Tom Welling playing Superman, again, never gonna happen, as not only do Warners not want to cross contaminate what they consider to be an all new property in JLA and a relaunch for many of the characters, with linking it to older properties, but Smallville's Gough and Millar have stated before that they consider Smallville to be a closed continuity and want to keep it that way. Also it has long been heavily rumoured that the final scene of Smallville has long been planned to be Clark finally putting on the Superman suit, and again I doubt they'd want to kill what the entire show has been leading up to (if they're allowed to do that scene at all by the time Smallville ends) by allowing Welling to play Superman on the big screen. Additionally once he played Superman that kills the show dead in the water, as he could never go back to "just" playing a non-supes Clark Kent on tv. Therefore, Welling, not gonna happen.

Personally I've heard the script is actually really good, and I also hear that the concept art kicks much ass as my former drama teacher is good friends with one of the guys who's doing concept art and storyboards on this (or at least was as of november last year). Likewise I think Miller is a damn fine director, though the casting is, largely, an unknown quantity at this point. Still I'm at least willing to wait and see something solid before I start declaring that it's guaranteed to suck. On the upside if this turns out good it's going to be lots of fun watching all the backflipping at least...

"JL" has a promising script, sure, but this casting ordeal has been atrocious, with precious few exceptions. And I don't wanna see any goddamn spin-offs from this guaranteed train wreck. I don't want some kind of quasi-continuity. Either do it or don't do it. And they can't do it, so...

Sledge Hammer - Bringing up Smallville makes no sense. This season is supposed to be its last. It may go one more, but that's it. No cast is signed beyond next season and half the cast isn't signed beyond this one. There was never any chance of the SV series playing at the same time or after JLA came out, because SV would be over by then. The show is already "killed dead in the water" by May 2009. Plus, what Gough says he wants is irrelevant. He has nothing to do with the film division. His desires and plans mean nothing to them.

Robo-Routh is collecting permanent unemployment checks. He's neither talented enough, nor charismatic enough to have anybody want to hire him. He is dying to jump into JLA, just to get off food stamps. He would add a black hole of suckiness to the movie, but technically it could be done. Only the desire to keep Singer's stink from contaminating and torpedoing another franchise has kept this from happening.

A new actor as Supes might be interesting, if that actor weren't a latino midget.

A new actor as JLA Batman might be inevitable, if only that actor weren' a teenage giant.

I know you want your friend to get work or whatever, but there is no excuse for this cast.

Make all the heroes black except for Green Latern, he can be the token white guy. With a black Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. no one will mistake this for Nolan's Batman and we will get Hal Jordan. Oh yeah and keep Lois Lane some sweet ass white chick who wants Superman. A few months ago it emerged that Nolan was pissed that WB were going ahead with JLA before he finished his own Batman movies, feeling that having another Batman in a separate franchise undermined what he was doing and that if the movie kept moving forward, that he was considering not coming back for a third Bat-movie.

WB later came out and said that Nolan was happy and fine with it all (and knowing WB, who never respond to anything unless there's some truth to it), but with Ledgers death and JLA up and running again, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Nolan didn't come back for a third film. Oh and about the whole cgi movie thing...uh, that was me. I sent in a fake report to IESB and Moviehole saying that JLA would be mo-cap cgi, and half the web ran with the story.

I was then going to reveal the truth to AICN, since you guys were the only ones not to be stupid enough to report it, but my computer crashed so the rumour just went on and on before eventually fading away. JLA was never going to be cgi.

Talk to whoever you want. WB now realizes Miller, like Romanek on Wolfie or Vaughn on X3, got cold feet and was looking for an out. Once the stall happened, Batman took a priority, Superman was splintered off and look which characters you were left with - the ones Silver has the rights to. Wow. What a kowinkydink.

Norton was offered Hulk when Ang was making his flick and passed, so it's not about some creative outlet. It's about m-o-n-e-y. Norton gets better percentages from indie financed films like The Illusionist and a more flexible schedule.

What needs to be understood is that Marvel and WB are not making superhero movies with the same business model. WB is looking for one tentpole franchise to supplant another the following year and then rotate. Marvel sees each flick as a sequel to the previous because they will all inhabit the same universe. So Norton and Favreau are not planning on making a trilogy of Hulk and IM films, but a pair that could lead to a new deal for an Avengers movie. For the talent getting involved with Marvel, it's about job security - can I bank on returning to this character in a the next few years, or am I going to be like Maguire and Bale and have to plan my life around a studio gig? This is why there's a good shot of Damon as Cap - he won't be as locked down as he was with Bourne.

And Welling has a massive chance to be Supes because he'll be free from Smallville, (playing Supes in the Singer movie while Smallville was still on meant Millar and Gough got say and some action from the movie).

I totaly agree with you Jazzylg. This is what they should have done, and if WB wisens up, they could still do it. They already have a great cast with a fan base. Audiences won't all flock to see Smallville on the big screen as is, but put Clark in the Superman suit and they sure will. Smallville has an amazing Clark, Lex and Lois. Seeing those three on the big screen would be far more entertaining than the Singer versions. Plus, Smallville has a VERY hot (and talented) Supergirl. Just imagine her on the big screen! Last I heard there was, in all liklihood, going to be a season 8 (minus some regular cast members who would still likely guest star on occasion), and if so then surely Welling would be filming that at the same time that this is filming, hence making him unavailable anyway. But you guys have a point, if the show is over by then then I guess they could concievably use Welling if they could sort out scheduling. Right or wrong, I doubt the suits at Warners would want to risk this being looked at as if it's Smallville the movie though, despite how well suited a few of the cast are to their roles on that show.

Sometimes you crack me up Vern. You really do.

You know damn well a Smallville flick would make 70mil easy due to the Superman name alone. You can't seriously compare characters that are as well known as those, to Firefly... a franchise that is still pretty gawd damned obscure to the non-geek masses. And when you figure in that it would be given a fraction of Singers budget, a shorter running time, and the fact that it has a built in audience of tv viewers and those who followed the show via dvd, there's a pretty good chance it would be an enormous hit... as well as fuel dvd sales of the season sets, and newly released "best of" packages for those who'd rather skip the soap elements of the show. Sure Smallville has it's fair share of problems, but they can be ironed out before any bigscreen leap with a little retcon here and there.

Just like your posts in the G.I.Joe talkbacks, you really have no idea what you're talking about.

Maybe a random episode of season 1, but since season 3 he IS Clark Kent. He brings a realism to the ultimate noble hero without making him corny. He is just a good person, a shining light of humanity in every little aspect but something we could all do if we tried, maybe if you watched some episodes from season 5 onwards you'd see he can act, besides he'd only have to play Superman not Daniel Plainview which is easier than the post crisis Clark Kent he already plays to perfection. And maybe you should watch that episode where he goes all paranoid and convinces you that a paranoid superman is fucking scary. He can act.

Are trying to mop up all the money they have lost from researching/developing Superman movies over the last few years. The Nic Cage/Burton project cost around $40 million in pre production development before aborted. Superman Returns (all $200 million of it!) lost money- and I really don't think would have made its money back via DVD and merchandise. If the JLA Superman is popular- that actor will appear in Superman spin off films as well as JLA sequels. There will be no sequel to Superman Returns. WB have been making money out of Superman from merchandise, comics, TV shows (cartoons, Lois & Clark, Smallville) for yonks. The one profit area has been cinema, the last Superman film to make money was Superman 3- and that was 25 years ago!

Dammit, I thought the strike would flush this used tampon of an idea, but I guess George 'Oscar Winner' Miller forced it through.

Look, I would love to see a great superhero team up movie...but these kids they've got playing the parts smacks of 'it's working on Smallville, so let's do it on the big screen'. And guess what? It looks pretty dopey on Smallville. See, what pisses me off is that they didn't let the Smallville guy BE Superman. I mean shit, he's really good at it by now, and he got the nod from Reeve a while back.

Sorry that Bryan Singer didn't have a man-crush on him, but the producers need to slap that kid around and tell him that IT MATTERS what the fans think. But by the box office I think he got it. Hopefully, he'll pull his head out of his ass and direct Superman 6 like X-Men 2....

George Miller directed Mad Max 1, 2, and 3. But, he also directed Babe. There hasn't been a balls to the wall action flick out of this guy in years...Has the pig softened the god of post-apocalyptic action? I guess we'll see. This has my money, because it's superheroes. But I'm worried about the children he's casting in these roles. (With the exception of Manhunter, who's pretty bad-ass I must admit). I don't know...

When I saw the people being considered for the roles, it looked like 'Teen Titans'. I mean, I have faith in George Miller, and in the past well done team superheroes movies are cool (Like for example The Incredibles) and did great at the box office.

I just have this gut reaction to the Superfriends: The Movie that most halfway normal guys do...Yeesh, people are going to laugh this out of theaters.

My suggestion for this movie stands, put George Miller in charge of this thing, but do it Beowulf style! Because you change Batman and Superman between flicks, the moviegoing populace is going to remember that little gimmick from the old Batman franchise, and it's going to smear good comic films with a wide spray of shittiness. I don't want another Batman and Robin, though the evil dark heart of me would LIKE something truly shitty to make fun of again...I'm just not fired up to see a bunch o' kids playing superheroes that are traditionally adults. It sounds like George Miller's 'Justice Leage Babies' to me.

And hate for the haters? HAH! I SOOO wanted to love SR. I still think Singer did brilliant work on US and XM1&2 and even AP! But SR? Ok, decent direction and a watchable idiot-flick but brilliant? Bollocks! Horrible screenplay plain and simple. One moment, Supes, just standing on a continent a good portion of which is Kryptonite, gets his ass beat by Lex and Kumar....and then 20 minutes later...with same Kryptonite now in plain fucking view in his face...lifts this continent-sized mass of kryptonite and rock into orbit. So kryptonite then only affects Supes given the convenience of the screenplay (even Smallville drops Kent the moment he gets near the K). In SR, this is weak storytelling. Yet another bullshit land-ass-grab from Luthor. The entire concept shoved firmly up the ass of the Donner films. The horrible casting of Lois (she was 23!!! and obviously so!) and Luthor (Spacey apparently was only a good casting choice on paper). And honestly, Luthor, supposedly one of Superman's greatest enemies...still can't get anything but moron goons for helpers? Was it that way in the comics cause I don't know but it doesn't work now if he's supposed to be a "super-genius" wouldn't you think?

Also, and maybe it's me, but just one of those crystals grew that giant ass continent...but of course when the remaining six or seven got dumped by Parker out of the chopper, and then the entire plateau piece falls into the ocean...the crystals don't do shit do they? Or are we supposed to presume Supes got them all first? While he was simultaneously ignoring the kryptonite growing right at his face. Must I go on?

Before he lifted the continent of Kryptonite off the earth, Supes flew to the Sun getting Super-charged first knowing the scale of the feat that awaited him. That's how I always read it. And btw, it nearly killed him. So, IMHO, I don't think that was a plothole.

Was kind of shitty. But more for doing things like shitting all over Superman. Like, making Lois a single mom...and Superman's the dad....Lex Luthor stomping the shit out of Supes was cool, but the guy playing him was a femme. And Superman's not the story about 'gays are people too', that's X-Men, no doubt about it...Superman's a story about a foreigner coming to America and living up to the American Ideal. Truth, Justice, and All That. Superman Returns makes Superman a nebbishy, complex, person, instead of the pinnacle of humanity/icon he's supposed to be. I liked it all right, but only because it was fucking Superman...It's just not the same as any other Superman around.

The krypton-crystals didn't really make kryptonite, they made 'pseudo-kryptonite'...So, whatever. The whole throwing a continent into space thing was a little weaksauce, but only because the major action sequences before that were so kickass. The plane scene was pretty dynamic. Throwing a big rock into space pales in comparison....Get better screenwriters, and that won't happen.

You're right, I was talking trash, my SERENITY/SMALLVILLE: THE MOTION PICTURE comparison was exaggerated. But my point is that I went and saw SUPERMAN RETURNS, I would even see a sequel to that even though I didn't think the movie was that great (for the opposite reasons of Micturating Benjamin - the stuff he mentioned was what I thought was interesting, but I didn't like how they mostly just aped the overrated Richard Donner movie).

I imagine many people's reaction would be like mine and would go something like this: "Oh a new Superman movie? Why does he have bangs? Oh, it's a different guy. Oh, I get it, it's the guy from that teen soap opera they used to have. That's weird." This would be followed by never seeing the movie or thinking much about it again. The end.

The show has its flaws (like Lana and M.O.W. syndrome), but they GET the character of Clark Kent/Superman, and they've established a level of development that even the comics can't always manage, as often as they change creative teams and fuck with continuity themselves. While watching the show, I have no doubt that the TV Clark will one day become Superman, and the show has on many occasions given me those genuine Superman moments of wonder that made me forget that it's a retconned TV series. Not only that, they have a Lex Luthor with an actual character arc and genuine depth, which neither of the big screen Luthors have managed. I think both actors are perfectly suited to their roles, and I believe that a movie spawned by the series would be a tremendous hit. It's thoroughly ignorant to suggest otherwise. As someone else said, Superman is Superman. The only reason RETURNS was a "disappointment" was they clung to a 30 year-old film version that didn't translate to the current generation, and then had Superman do a bunch of shit that Superman would never do because the director didn't really get the character. SMALLVILLE is a very popular, of-the-moment show, it has nailed the essence of the character of Clark Kent, and there are already many people - including non-comic fans - who have a lot invested in it. A SMALLVILLE movie could only be a smash success.

I don't want it because I know they wouldn't do it right and hire some hack director etc. And yes it has given many many moments of superman wonder. Some of my favourite moments of anything have been from the show. It's the first time we get to see Superman do the stuff he can actually do. The first time he flies is the first time he flew the way he should, at mach 3. The future vision of Supes going into a vortex to begin his new life on another solar system. Luthor/Zod smashing Supes through the window and flying away which was BADASS. Clark and his dad in the first superbrawl and columns breaking down and walls coming down - Badass. And the ultimate. Clark saving the kid from the damn which was pure Superman. And the development of the characters at least Clark and Luthor has been nothing of incredible, especially Luthor. I have never really liked Luthor, his origin and as a character is two cheesy and one note, but he is after all the first major comic book villain. But Smallville has reinvented him and made him into a villain worthy of standing beside Dr Doom. Like they said in one of the first episodes, becoming evil is a journey not a lightswitch and over the 100 hours plus of episodes the transisition has been amazing.

Yes mate, you are right that Superman Returns made around £$390 million worldwide, however I believe that a feature film needs to recoup around four times of its budget to turn in a profit. Now yes, perhaps SR made a profit when you add in TV rights, merchandise, DVD etc and I do not want to get bogged down discussing numbers- because we all know it is the quality of the film that counts, but I reckon WB do feel that SR underwhelmed and in terms of money "did not knock it out of the park"- perhaps this is why they are going into a JLA movie and have not fastracked a sequel to SR. Despite flaws, I did really enjoy SR and I would see a sequel. However, I also think that WB missed a trick by not waiting until Smallville had finished on the small screen, and then had Millar and Gough develop a movie with Welling, Rosenbaum and Durrance. That way it could have been sold to Smallville fans- but also for those who had no idea about the show, they see the ads, they see Superman and they feel "oh potentially cool summer flick." Covered both basis. And for those Smallville haters- that show is the longest running show based on the character of Clark Kent and concept of Superman EVER...

Even with those that couldn't give two shits about Smallville because of it's soap elements, it would still be successful. There's no way the film would be anymore lovey dovey than any of the previous films. Did you ever think that because there were so many restrictions on where they could take the storyline, as well as being kept on the air a bit too long just to keep the WB and CW afloat, and most importantly because it was focused on Clark's teenage years, the show had to delve into Dawson's Creek territory? I'm sure Gough and Millar are well aware that if they were given the ball, they'd have to give the naysayers as well as the fans what they wanted. And believe it or not, that is the same thing.

Good word of mouth will bring back the people that passed on the property.

And as far as bigscreen adaptations of Lois and Clark, like messi said, that was nowhere near as popular as this.

And regarding the Hulk... If Bixby was still alive, despite his character being killed off already, a film focusing on an elderly Banner, would've been hella interesting.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Lois pull the shiv out before he flew up to the sun? I am not ashamed to say I like the film, it had flaws but I wouldn't called it badly made, just lacking in thrills. But hey, I've been having this fight with folks for nearly 2 yrs now so I'm content to one of a significant number who disagree with you. Agree to disagree? Oh and on Smallville - I hate that show, no offense but I see it as the Dawson's Creekification of the Superman myth. Durrance confuses acting with having fake tits and overacting, Welling is made of wood. But I'll give the show this, the Kents and the Luthors are great. Lana Lang though has always been a deeply stupid, unsympathetic tedious character in the show and some of the plots beggar belief. Sorry.

Do you really think a Smallville film would be about Superboy? The only reason Clark hasn't became "a man" yet (on the show) is because thats pretty much offlimits territory. And if they are allowed to go there, what would be keeping them from making a great Superman movie? The show has brought more depth to the characters than any of the films.

IMHO, Welling is OK for TV playing Superboy but does not have the talent, charisma or presence to play Superman. Playing a young Clark Kent on TV is very different to playinf Superman. And secondly I respect your feelings about the show but I don't think you can say that the Kents in that show compare to the Kents in the Donner movie - always felt like the Smallville Kents were straight out of Everwood or Seventh Heaven. And no way does Durrance touch Margot Kidder as Lois Lane. Oh and Lana Lang, seven seasons on and still a waste of space. Annette O' Toole was infinitely better. But the Luthors in that respect, you are right. But that's just my feeling and I know I am not alone, you are free to disagree.
