i've never been too ape-shit for IRON MAN, but this movie has me giddy. not as giddy as TDK, but close. nearly everything about this movie gives me confidence that these people GET what a comic character is about and how to make such a movie.

I know everybody has been hating on Stark in the comics after the Civil War debacle, but IRON MAN: Director of SHIELD is one of the best comics going right now. Certainly the best thing going on at Marvel (along with Daredevil, Captain America, The Order (sadly soon to be cancelled), and the Annihilation:Conquest books).

why show him building TWO armors? If the first act is the Mk.I build-up, why the hell spend so much time (the scene you described seems to be damn long) on such a geek-oriented subject as Stark creating the final armor, complete with technical babbling and cheesy humor? I think it'll turn off some non-fans, who just want to see shellhead kick asses and don't care about how it's built, especially if it's shown twice. We'll see...

Look out DARK KNIGHT, here comes IRON MAN!!!
by JDanielP
Feb 24th, 2008
09:06:14 AM
Although Batman is my favorite fictional character, I think "IRON MAN" just overtook "THE DARK KNIGHT" on my must-see list, for this summer. It's wonderful that they've brushed up (so-to-speak) that shot of IRON MAN blowing up the tank, which bodes well for all other effects shots. "IRON MAN", I expect, will make a mint at the box office. --I've always been more of a DC Comics guy, but Marvel Comics has a much larger list of great superhero characters, from my perspective. And IRON-MAN is a character that is long past due his time in the spotlight. "IRON MAN" is going to shine. And just maybe, "AVENGERS" will be the STAR WARS of this generation. I, for one, believe that...THAT...is a very REAL possibility.
Every single thing I've heard about Iron Man sounds great!

Especially the dialogue excerpts that emphasize the character of Tony Stark. The public doesn't know IM, true, but this movie seems to have the style, brawn, and wry sense of humor that the average moviegoer loved about Spider-Man. (Missing the teen romance angle, but whatever.) Indy and Batman are taking a backseat to Iron Man.

Although I'd LOVE to see a big budget GREEN LANTERN movie, I'm afraid that it would be hopelessly effed up by some hack. Remember at one point they were going to make a GL movie starring Jack Black as Hal Jordan? *Shudder*

What I'd like to see is another Bruce Timm animated series about the GL Corps written by noneother than Geoff Johns. Now THAT would have me excited, cause you know it would be quality and you know it would rock.

Unless there's a failure to launch, or any other mishap it'll make some easy money. But people seem to take the internet hype surrounding it (a hype created by the studio and a few internet geeks) for a sure sign of success. Snakes On A Planes, anyone?

Not that Shellhead will bomb likewise (it's still a possibility, but unlikely) but Iron Man is a lesser known character and needs a big push from the marketing side. The actors might be great, but they're here to tame the geek community, not to draw people in theaters. The PR campaign around the movie really turned on the vocal fans on a few message boards, but so far I don't think it put the movie on the general audience's radar. And until further notice, it is what really counts for the studio's bottom line.

by LaserPants
Feb 24th, 2008
11:14:02 AM
And I also think that, objectively, its going to be a better movie. But IRON MAN is most likely going to crush DARK KNIGHT at the box office. Why? 1) Its new. 2) Aggressive marketing campaign surrounding technology (remember the demographic they're shooting for -- 15-35). 3) It doesn't have a tragic death at its center. The people advertising TDK still haven't quite figured their away around that mess.

So, yeah, I think TDK will most likely be a better film, but IRON MAN is going to kill it at the box office.

I'm sorry, I like Batman, but he's been so overexposed it's not even funny. American covet the newest hottest thing, not the sure thing. That's why we're chosing Barack over Billary. Americans embrace change, and a new Marvel movie about an somewhat obscure character is just the type of character that Americans will flock to.

IM will beat TDK box office-wise. And surely not this summer. I'd bet the farm on it.

Iron Man is a lesser known fella, while TDK comes after the success of Batman Begins. The marketing around IM ain't that intense (it's mostly untangible hype) while TDK has some solid - and successful - viral marketing for itself. The SuperBowl spot for Iron Man tanked with the viewers, according to surveys. And the death of Heath Ledger won't harm the movie, more likely fuel the morbid curiosity of people not keen in watching the flick in the first place. I can't imagine a moviegoer eager to watch it changing his mind because of Ledger's tragic end. And WB has already a Two-Face centric trailer on the starting blocks.

I'd bet my Gort replica (the one I put on eBay) with you LaserPants: TDK will be on the top 3 movies this summer, above Shellhead. Deal?

Dark Knight....Indiana Jones....Iron Man....The Hulk...Hellboy...Watchmen

Th en going into winter...This is the year we're going to see a trailer for The Hobbit, and next year is going to be the year that Hollywood brings the genre films back for a tour. It's been great since X-Men came out...but the reality is that genre flicks are still only 'superheroes' type stuff that they want to push...

I want to see more C.H.U.D. and Big Trouble in Little China...I want Night of the Comet...I want Hollywood to allow filmmakers to make really oddball stuff...Don Coscarelli is making John Dies at the End...What I'm interested in there is how he's going to get a screenwriter to delineate that story into something more like a film. It's witty, and unique, but it's not going to be easy. Mark my words this year is shaping up to be good, but I've got my eye on 2009 to reflect the genre film boom of the 80s...Avatar, and let me tell you what, I get the sense that both Lucas and Spielberg NEEDED to do another Indy, to pull their heads out of their asses. Something about working with Harrison Ford, I bet.

This movie sounds retardiculously good...And Robert Downey Junior IS Tony Stark. If you read the Ultimates, it's either Downey or Depp...I read him and thought Robert Downey, and it's no secret round my house that I find Robert Downey Junior kickass in everything...his bully in Weird Science is fucking legendary...Next to Sweep-The-Leg Johnny, Robert Downey Jr. in Weird Science DEFINED 'Richie Asshole' in the teen flick...Though I have to say James Spader was more venomous.

Jon Favreau is great, and seems like a great guy. 'Made' was awesome, and I have to say his brief cameos in the Sopranos were fucking hilarious. I hope this does well. I want an Avengers movie and this looks great, so we could see a great team-up flick... I do not want a Justice League movie unless its plotted and directed by Paul Dini and Jeph Loeb in Beowulf-O-Vision.

And, in the extremely unlikely case that I'm wrong, you get to tell me that I'm PWNED!!! and gloat and stuff. Deal?

Seriously, though, I think TDK is gonna kick the shit out of IM in terms of quality -- its going to be a better film. But I think that something shiny and red and new like IM is gonna beat it with the Summer audiences. Besides, the latest Batman ideation leans more arthouse-y / winter-y then Summer blockbustery. IM is blockbustery written all over it. So, we'll see. And I'm totally gonna say "Yr PWNED!" Haha!

I fucking hate people who ask these questions... yeah sometimes it's legitimate to ask, but every fucling time I attend a panel with anyone there's always someone who asks this question... and it is always some guy or girl who just happens to be sitting there out of curiosity because there was nothing else of interest to them going on and so they raise their hand to ask this question just as a token of audience participation. "What inspired you?" "What was your inspiration?" Usually the question is too vague to the topic at hand, but anyway I don't care, I'm just peeved that it's usually dumb ass questions like this that get asked which take up a lot of freaking time, don't contribute anything and I had some good damn questions to ask that other fans would really want to know but I never get called on. Maybe I should sit closer to the front during stuff like this... oh well... Anyway word of advice to panelists, some schmuck is going to ask that question at any panel you attend, so you better prepare a good answer prior to going in, and please for the love of ... Don't offer free shit or posters or anything to get audience participation because every random bum will raise their hand with some uninteresting tripe and that pisses me off, I just had to vent there everyone... anyway back to the show...

USA Today tracked Superbowl ads for almost two decades. Their survey is a staple of Superbowl ads, as much as shitty Geico commercials.

And for the record I never, EVER said or even implied that the box office was somehow linked with the quality (or lack thereof) of the final product. Shitty movies perform well, good ones tank sometimes. That's life.

So, your point, then?

I never cared for Ironman, but that trailer, especially the humorous parts, totally have me stoked for this movie. It's always funny reading these here, people wanting to put on their EXTRA!HOLLYWOOD!!TONIGHT!!! Studio industry predictions like sportsfans handicapping their favorite team's chances in the upcoming season--- and often just as biased in their conclusions. That said, I personally think that IRON MAN's more of the sort of Summer crowd-pleasing blockbuster film (rockets! robots! explosions! Ozzy!) than the darker-themed BATMAN sequel (a hero's angst vs. a villian's psychosis?) to draw in the Box Office $$$s.

The x-factor in this of course is Ledger's death, which just might draw in the considerable non-Batman/non-comics audience into seeing DARK KNIGHT for his perfomance...

It could be unbelievably bad like The Phantom Menace but people will still go to see it. Most parents were brought up with Indy, so that's what they will take their kids to see.

Iron Man looks promising but there is no way on earth it will get The Dark Knight figures. Favreau knows this as well, I wish him luck with Iron Man.

http://tinyurl.com/32sngv I just read this on io9.com, in an interview talking about the new Iron Man movie He talked about the flying scenes in-depth, and used Stealth as an example of how bad flying scenes can be. They tried to emulate the look of the flying scenes in both Top Gun and Battlestar Galactica that have more of a documentary feel.

his PR method has been flawless so far. The MySpace stunt, his apparitions in conventions, the way he winks to the audience by giving them popular references (Black Sabbath, the Jarvis AI, etc...). This is all very clever. Fans were waiting for such an approach, as it seems it really resonates with them.
Box office tallies

I look forward to Iron Man, but to think that it will take at the box office over TDK is a bit naive. Look, Iron Man is great and all, but the mainstream is just not aware of him. Batman is a household icon. Plus with all the buzz behind TDK; a hotly anticipated sequel from a brilliant relaunch, it has the Joker, it has Heath Ledger, Heath Ledger is now tits up and this was his swan song. I wish Iron Man luck. I'm definitely going to see it. But it will need thrusters of immense proportions to blow the doors off of this bat-vehicle. Indy 4 will be a distant 3rd. Sorry Charlie.

My wife doesn't want to see TDK because she feels playing the Joker killed Ledger and she finds it creepy. I think that sentiment might find its way into the general population and hurt TDK at the box office, even though it will still do well. Iron Man seems much more women and kid friendly, and I tend to think that will carry it past TDK.

You know, I think people are going to want to see the performance of a gifted actor of a character so hideous that it "killed" the actor. That's why we slow down when there's an accident. To get a good look. As far as Ironman being more chick and kid friendly, maybe. I'm not sure what comes out the same weekend, but if there's a cartoon or Julia Roberts-type flick, IronMan will be fucked.

take a close look at this TB: I never bashed Favreau. I just criticized some of his choices (the focus on humor, mainly) and made a snarky (I'll give you that) comment about the way he pimped his movie for the geek audience.

Apert from that I have no problem with him, and certainly won't put him into the a-hole/hack pack category, down there with Ratner or Bay.

My only concern is that the people around here are really too much polarized, as if the movie will be either the Second Coming OR an absolute crock of shit. And people leaning toward the former opinion refuse to acknowledge the controversial decisions I pointed out, labelling any discordant opinion as "hate speech", while self-proclaiming themselves exegetes in all things Iron Man. That's my only gripe. That and my girlfriend's supposed sluttiness. But I digress...

Really, brobdingnag? Dead End is the best Batman?
by TheLastCleric
Feb 25th, 2008
02:37:51 PM
Dead End looked and felt like what it was; an ambitious amateur film with bad actors dressed up in expensive Halloween costumes. The Joker looked like a mutant, had a ridiculously bad laugh, and the actor playing him was obviously trying (unsuccessfully) to channel Mark Hamil’s Joker from the animated series. The guy who played Batman was okay; nothing more or less. It was a pretty entertaining film up until the Alien grabbed the Joker and the Predators showed up to fight Batman. Then it became a truly retarded fan film. Batman Begins really is a brilliant origin film and the most accurate cinematic representation of the character to date. I think by its very nature Begins had to move at a slower pace where by contrast I suspect The Dark Knight will move more briskly. My money is on the DK being the best comic book adaptation ever and perhaps retaining that mantle for many years to come.

Excellent job, Quint. It's nice to see some kick-ass entertainment journalism here every once in a while.

This sounds like it's going to surprise the non-comic fans quite a bit. They'll go because it looks like a cool action flick starring that guy they used to see in movies all the time. This is going to put Downey back on top, and it's going to solidify Marvel Studios' reputation.

PLUS it give me the Tony Stark I've been missing. The one who isn't a complete dick, like the current 616 Stark (who is supposedly such a dick because of the techno-organic virus he carries, but that doesn't make his behavior any less dick-ish.)

Dead End

If you like that, what you are basically saying is you want absolutely no story at all, you just need to see a man in underpants and some shitty special effects. Personally I'd much rather watch 3 hours of Bale talking to Morgan Freeman about equipment than I would watch a feature length adaptation of Dead End. Dead End couldn't maintain a sensible plot for 3 minutes.

For the simple fact that kids have ADD and are uninterested in going back to see the original trilogy. That's why Shia was thrown in there, but I still think that the 4th sequel to an old franchise will not make as much as any of the Pirates movies domestically. Only us older folk will see Indy. Iron Man will be this years Transformers (money wise) and The Dark Knight will make a lot of dough based off the hype, HL's death, and the fact that all the folks who packed theaters to see I Am Legend have seen and enjoyed the begining of the film already.
