the movie would've been better with the original casting of dave chapelle. but, still, i don't know how people can be so pissy about a movie that's about the joy of handmade art. it's a diy movie with it's heart in the right place. but, all that aside, the fats waller movie-in-the-movie was amazing. there are some truly low tech genius innovations. and, that fats waller stuff is gold. truly worth the price of the movie...

Has more heart, soul and creativity in his work than many folks who are sensitized to media can take. I don't think people really understand how much conditioning a viewer of a certain genre or era of media undergoes. We expect and want the sugar sweet roller coaster we are promised and we can't always taste the subtlety of daring artists. People complain when comfortably "qwirky" becomes unclear, unexpected and avant-garde. They say the artist has lost his meaning or way. What they mean is, "This is not what I expected or wanted. I am lost. I am feeble. I'm a big douche."

I like how it portrayed Blockbuster and ever other movie outlet which has tried to dumb down it's movie selections over the past decade. Thank goodness for netflix. Also the idea of people making their own films and being creative, only to have the movie companies try to shut them down seemed relevant. Great film.

Pretentious is one of those words that has lost its meaning.
by rbatty024
Feb 23rd, 2008
10:04:06 AM
When people use it as a shorthand, without explaining why something is pretentious, it usually means they don't understand the art or the artist.

Eternal Sunshine is one of the few recent Hollywood love stories that doesn't talk down to its audience (the other is High Fidelity). The ending leaves open the possibility that the two characters are not made for each other and their relationship might end the same way it did before they erased their memories.

Science of Sleep is a rumination on the joys and dangers of perpetual childhood. The imagination and wonder of our younger years and the inability to have complex adult relationships. I found it to be a complex character study. Visually, Gondry is unique and I think if we are to brand any unique artist as pretentious, then we can look forward to a long line of 80's cartoon adaptations.

Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you don't "get it". People who make that charge are fucking idiots. It's perfectly possible to understand a film and think it's pretentious bull shit. And no, it isn't necessary to explain why you think something is pretentious. Nobody owes you an explanation. One person can believe something is pretentious crap another can believe it's a masterpiece. That's the beauty of film. To each his own.

because I could understand why somebody would not like Gondry's movies, but to accuse him of being a director-for-hire without a style of vision of his own doesn't make any sense at all.
Skywalker/Warp11
by Vern
Feb 23rd, 2008
12:23:22 PM
Hey Skywalker I don't mean to pick on you again but I gotta ask... you made two of your one sentence snipes here so far, one comparing it to a "local news team" the other to a "home movie." My question is, do you know the premise of the trailer? Do you know what the movie is about? Do you understand why your complaints make no god damn sense and a normal person would not type those things? You're a real mystery to me man, the master of one sentence, cruel hearted riddles.

Warp11: Glad you enjoyed the movie, I thought it was pretty flawed but I enjoyed those aspects too. I also kind of like that even though the Blockbuster-type store is sort of the bad guy in all honesty the Be Kind Rewind store sucks worse in most ways. So the deck is not stacked too much. Their store really would fail due to its poor selection but it's shown that the way to "improve" in a business sense is not to make a great store but to follow stupid corporate ideas.

I also want to say since you mentioned it that Netflix is the new Blockbuster. They went into the hole to monopolize the business and put many real life independent video stores out of business. And unlike a Be Kind Rewind they don't carry VHS so you're not gonna get anything that's not available on DVD or requires an import or anything, and regardless of that they take out the neighborhood, the community, the coming in with your friends to pick out movies, all things glorified in the movie. So I will have to come out pro BE KIND REWIND, anti-Netflix.

His films are divisive, sure, but just how awesome is his catalogue of music videos? Put it this way, Jonze, Glazer, Cunningham and Fincher have nothing on him when it comes to amazing music vids. I really hope I like (no, love) this film, but I am not a fan of Jack Black.

Aronofsky - Fincher - Jonze - PT and Wes - Gondry - Ms. Coppola - Solondz their contributions as directors are unblemished in my eyes. Fountain, Alien 3, Punch Drunk, Life Aquatic, Be Kind, Marie Antoinette, and even Jonze's test shot for Where the Wild Things Are, though squabblepated are all unique, inventive and I dare say masterful pieces of cinema.

Good point about their having to move to a corporate style model to actually make it. Regarding your second point though about netflix, I disagree. While both my friends and I may not frequent a video store to rent a film, we are "friends" on netflix which all us to see each other's que and to recommend films to one another. So in that way we can not only choose what sort of film(s) we want for our weekly movie night, but in a way I can see virtually visit a video store with some of my friends who live thousands of miles away. I have been able to find many independent films on on netflix, but I am sure that is not their priority. Ahh, heck everything will be streaming in a few years, so who knows what is going to happen. So long as people can stay invested in the films they see, whether through colobratively picking a film, or actually making one, will the movie going experience continue to be communal in nature. Cause when it comes down to it, seeing a film with a good friend(s) who are as into seeing a film as yourself is always better than seeing it solo.

That gag with the ladder and the camouflage was tits. Also the bit where it's one camera shot where they do 2001: A Space Odyssey and Men in Black reminded me of Gondry's Lucas With the Lid Off video. The end was a bit hokey, but it fit with the tone of the movie. Good stuff I thought.

All film makers should aspire to make films of this caliber; full of heart, soul and creativity. This film doesn't need the candy coated polish of a summer blockbuster, it tells a strong story with a natural, down-home feel. It practices what it preaches, that people shouldn't be spoon-fed junk, they should be allowed to share in a unique, creative experience. Michel Gondry is everything Michael Bay isn't, Michael Bay sucks.
