It says on their web page that "The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films is a non-profit organization devoted to honoring, recognizing and promoting genre entertainment."

But looking at that huge list, I don't get that feeling at all - at least not the focus on sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.

Nominations for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN? EASTERN PROMISES? THERE WILL BE BLOOD? BLACK BOOK? For mainstream awards, sure, but here?

I feel like this group is diluting their purported focus on sci-fi, fantasy, and horror by including so many films and categories that don't fit into those genres.
The Saturn awards haven't meant anything in years.

When shows like Smallville are nominated, you know you suck.

That's just the first thing wrong with this silly list. They need to narrow down their categories.

And Sunshine is the only movie to deserve that Best Science Fiction Film nomination. I didn't there was an award show I could care less about than the Emmy's...

And when the fuck did AUGUST RUSH become a genre film? Somebody on the nomination committee must've had a fuck-buddy working on that film.

so FF is sci-fi, Spidey is fantasy, and GR is horror? maybe, not really, and no. all these stupid self-flagellating awards need to go away.

The third season was easily the best on TV last year, and it should win in every category it's nominated in... Except for the best actor award. That one belongs to Dexter!
kind of odd nominations.

I loved Sweeney, but don't actually feel it belongs in that horror category. Give that nom to "Behind the Mask" perhaps, or better yet "Bug". They were both this year right? And if you do away with Sweeney, The Mist has it hands down. Ghost Rider? Are you serious? It wasnt horror, and barely a movie for that matter. Sunshine is the only thing that really stands out there in it's category, and even it was far from perfect but I think that's sadly the nature of sci-fi right now. Im keeping my eye for the next big thing, but nothing is showing. It's so bad we are all slobbering over Cameron's movie and that's still pretty far off. Where is all the good sci-fi? Anyway, the action/adventure category is odd. There Will Be Blood considered the same genre as 300? Interesting. Again, if this genre was condensed to it's actual occupants it would be a standoff between ultimatum, 300 and Yuma and based on my own geekly preferences, probably 300 would be last man standing.
Some sad lists up there

The science fiction pool looks especially lame this year. I haven't seen Sunshine, but from what I've heard it's the only movie on that list that was remotely good. Sad year for genre, looks like (or as others have pointed out, maybe it's just poor nomination selections).
The Saturn Awards should be the Oscars this Year!!!

For those of you who say John has never made a bad movie, this movie was the worst movie I saw last year. Even more boring then Knocked up. Can't wait to see the next Mikael Håfström joint. Directors not from hollywoodland, take note stay in your home countries.

If Family Guy doesn't win, then this show is just as rigged as the Grammies. Blue Harvest was awesome and Harry you are a wussy for not enjoying the hell out of it. Now don't get Penisy.

Viggo Mortensen getting more nominations for his best Ed Harris impersonation (and his balls). Eastern Promises would have been good if I knew it was part of some trilogy or the pilot. Rather then a movie that didn't really go anywhere like History of David Cronenberg's recent movies.

Yeah agreed Sci-fi was not really looked at this year. Though Sunshine does make up for that. I feel 07 was a sad year overall. Also how you going to put like every animated movie made this year, but not TMNT? TMNT was fucking amazing, awesome action, and not the killing of childhood memories like Transformers. TMNT looked better then Shrek 3, Surfs Up and Meet the Robinsons combined, plus like it came out of no where. I went in thinking that it was going to be DTV bad, but it was an awesome movie. The fight between Leo and Ralph was just as good as Butler and the giant mutant thing.
