But Ferrell rocks my world long and strong. WOOOOOO! Ferrell has done done his dabble in serious stuff, so he can do comedy whenever he damn well pleases! Anchorman and Talladega Nights get better with every viewing, and Blades is someone becoming one of my favorite comedies. I have no idea how, by it's happening, brother. Believe it.

Hack?

Feb 20th, 2008
09:11:12 PM
I've already defended Ratner in that Wolf Man talkback but is Craig Gillespie really a hack? Sure Woodcock was fairly laugh-free and altogether not very good but I smelled some studio interference on that one, and Lars and the Real Girl was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year, even if you attribute its success to Nancy Oliver and the engaging trio of Gosling, Mortimer and Schneider. Can't wait to see Semi-Pro. Basketball movies usually get the shaft so here's hoping this one is as good as Harry says it is. In other news, I'm hearing mixed things about Vantage Point (maybe too tough to live up to that trailer), Jumper failed to meet my admittedly high expectations but Definitely, Maybe was a sweet little rom-dramedy that's pretty perfect for couples. Mira, out!

Will Ferrell stopped being funny in 95 and I stopped caring about Will Ferrell right about the time it seemed like he, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Owen "dicknose" Wilson were all doing cameos in each other's movies. There was a period of about 2 years where it seemed like every comedy was starring at least one of those assholes. Let it go, you guys you had your day in the sun, now people who are actually funny like Jonah Hill and Seth Rogan can star in some movies that are actually funny.

This may be a good movie, but it's only a matter of time before the manchild macho pseudo celebrity character (Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Talledega Nights, Semi-Pro) gets old. I give him credit because it's hard to make it work 4 times in a row.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. What was interesting was that as much as Will Ferrell was a main character, he wasn't THE main character. I'd argue it's more Woody Harrelson's movie than Will's. And as surprising as it was, it worked. The movie isn't Anchorman, but it's a damn funny and silly comedy, all around much more fun than Talladega Nights or Blades of Glory. So go check it out if you're definitely not looking for something serious, or you're definitely not looking for something shitty.

I was wicked busy this awards season and never got around to sending in my Top 10 list to AICN. My thoughts on the year in film can be found over at the CSIndy.com website but for those of you too lazy to go hunting, here it is, after MUCH deliberation. 1. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly 2. There Will Be Blood 3. Zodiac 4. In the Valley of Elah 5. Grace Is Gone 6. Ratatouille 7. Once 8. No Country for Old Men 9. Into the Wild 10. Control 5 Honorable Mentions: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, The Darjeeling Limited, Knocked Up Worst Picture: The Number 23

...Well, what does it mean when I find him to be funny when he is in funny movies, but find his extremely limited schtick grating as hell when hes in junk like Blades Of Glory or Old School? I think hes a severely one note "comedian" whose proven that he has no range. Hes not Jim Carrey or Eddie Murphy, hes just like Larry The Cable Guy or the Ernest Guy. But put him in a well made movie surrounded by other funny people, like Talladega Nights or Anchorman, or even in more straight fare like Winter Passing and hes okay.

Terrible Terrible Movie...you will regret seeing it.

Saw it last night and it is Not Funny. Below Blades of Glory in the Will Ferrell canon. It is basically more of a "Major League" or "Necessary Roughness" than a Will Ferrell comedy machine...but not as good as either of those movies. Doesn't have the heart (which it tries with a lame Maura Tierney/Woody Harrelson romance, and Andre's storyline) or the laughs. A few funny moments courtesy of Will Arnett and Andrew Daly (who should have their own spin off movie, which would be funnier)...but the only semi-funny moments don't even come from basketball material (Will wrestling a bear, for example.)

Seriously, the premiere was almost dead silent for 80% of the movie. Sad. See it and you will regret it.

p.s. there was one lady who was cackling like an idiot behind me, even at the "hilarious" pre-credit stuff Harry was talking about...Will Ferrell singing a song...is that all it takes to make some people laugh? It is I guess...sometimes people laugh when an actor just walks onscreen in anticipation of the funny. Me, I prefer waiting til the funny actually happens. But I digress. Back on point: THE MOVIE SUCKS.

Fair enough. Point taken. Woodcock had potential with Billy Bob and Stifler, but it turned out pretty lame thanks to that 'corny' script. And poor Sarandon, talk about slumming. But you gotta give Gillespie credit for helping bring Lars to life, so to speak. That's a tough tone to strike but he and his cast pulled it off, much to my surprise after that ghastly trailer. Just sayin', you don't have to love Gillespie or Ratner but you can't equate them with the director of Son of the Mask. That's Uwe level. Well... almost. Although, and this might sound bad, but I thought that Tunnel Rats trailer looked halfway decent. Uh oh.

And the favorable comparison over "Blades of Glory" holds no water whatsoever. Blades is a funnier film, more laughs, good chuckles. "Semi Pro" gets off the ground maybe once or twice, thanks to Jackie Earl Haley and the 'Jive Turkey' scene, but then it tries to take itself way too seriously, and Woody Harrelson's character belongs in a totally different movie. And likening this movie to "Anchorman" and "Taladega Nights" was uncalled for, and frankly more than just a little dishonest.

Parts of it are a complete shit hole, other parts are just fine.

Roger and Me is a highly flawed film though. Micheal Moore is 100% full of crap. GM leaving didn't kill Flint, by that time most of the residents who could afford to leave had already moved to the suburbs. Unions, through their job bank programs and worker re-location programs, made sure those workers still had jobs and collected a pay check. Many of them had to move, but they moved from the Flint suburbs to other places. Flint was already a ghost town.

The sad truth is that white flight destroyed Flint. When the schools were integrated in the 60's there was serious tensions and violence between white students and black students and those who could afford to get out of the city left in droves. My mother was born and raised in Flint, and her parents moved to the suburbs when she was about to go into high school to escape the situation.

She said that by the time she graduated from high school in the suburbs more than half of the kids she went to school with in Flint had to moved to same town (just to the south of Flint). That happened in the 60's, years before GM began closing plants.

Flint was already a ghost town by the time the plants began shutting down in the 70's because most of the affluent residents who could afford to move to the suburbs had already left the city, but I wouldn't expect Micheal Moore to actually delve into the sad, but true, cause of Flint's decline because that wouldn't line up with his agenda to blame it all on corporations.

"Anchorman" and "Talladega" succeeded on the strength of his co-stars, not him. Ironically, I thought he was the best (and least annoying) of the actors in the otherwise forgettable "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Melinda and Melinda." He should do more "real" acting.

LA Times had a whole story on how they replaced Gillespie with David Dobkin for re-shoots to make it more mainstream and accessible and, well, shittier. Gillespie said he was trying to make an Alexander Payne type film that didn't jibe with what the studio and producers (of which Dobkin was one) wanted.

But Will Ferrell has been on a downward butt streak. Does Harry realize the man who did Mr. Woodcock also did Lars and the Real Girl? He should hold off his accusations of hacks, especially since that movie was taken away from that man and now he wants to compare it to the guy who directed the latest Will Ferrell crapedy. And please Harry, no more food or sex analogies or overly earnest attempts at humor.

I really liked Old School, but that wasn't a Will Ferrell movie. He stole the show in some scenes, but he was still a supporting character.

I always thought Anchorman was overrated. It was a decent movie, but I didn't think it wasn't a comedy classic in my mind.

Talladega Nights never really registered for me. I just felt it was just Ferrell doing his schtick again. Nothing special.

Missed Blades of Glory. Elf was good, but more despite Ferrell.

Personally, I felt Ferrell's best work that I have seen since Old School was his bit part in the Wedding Crashers. I think Ferrell works best in movies in small doses.

In the way that he's made it last this long. All of his dramady's have sucked. Stranger then Fiction was sooooo boring and lame one of the few movies I've just given up on, and it had Dustin in it. I'll blame Marc Forster for most of it because he is a boring director, good luck Bond. But all of Will Ferrel's side movies are all the same. At least Jim Carrey and Steve Carell can pick interesting non comedies (yeah 23 sucked but it was different). I just hope Sacha can prove that he is the funniest man in the world and not fall into the typical comedian thing and just play the same guy over and over. John C. Reilly has already proven that he isn't too interested in doing anything else as a comedian. Can't wait to see William as the loud dumb ummmmm (Step Brother?) hi-li player next.

Great to see him back. It's kind of sad when you think of how competitive ol' Hollywood can be--we tend to think that the De Niros et al rise to the top because they're the best, but I'm sure there are hundreds of terrific performers out there who just never get their break, or who can't compete once they do. If Haley's a gifted dramatic and comedic actor, why didn't he work for almost fifteen years?

I just didn't get that movie. Even if I disagree with someone's opinion of a movie, I usually "get" why they'd like it or dislike it. But very intelligent people have told me how hilarious that movie is, and I just can't relate. When a woman lent it to me to watch, I was actually surprised, because I didn't realize it was a family movie. A family movie with James Caan? I spent the whole movie waiting for Caan to snap, and he ends up singing Christmas carols. (NOTE: Previous line was a spoiler.) I can take this as a learning experience--i.e., that I'm not always going to understand the tastes and preferences of other people; but I choose not to, and instead silently deride anyone over the age of ten who likes Elf. No offence, and I don't mean to be arrogant here, but I'm right, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

Ferrell's films have funny premises. 70s weatherman, two guys figure skating together, a human raised as an elf. But for me that isn't enough. I like my comedy to have more than a funny premise. Ferrell's films get by on a funny premise and him acting silly. That isn't enough to entertain me.

And all his movies are just based on something I've already been for halloween...and he kist does the same character in a different costume. if you like him, thats cool, but he kind of lost me with anchorman...talladega nights was when I realized its all just the same character, different movie. I loved Talladega Nights, thought Blades of Glory had some funny bits but just seemed lazy overall. I saw Semi-Pro last night and it's the work of a man who seems content to do the same thing over and over again because we'll see it (and we will). Other than the Russian Roulette scene, I don't think I laughed once, neither did the audience. And yes, there were plenty of kids there so it's not like it was a tough crowd. I guess the one risk Ferrell takes is the R Rating (just language), but it's pointless and doesn't make it any better or funnier. Don't give me crap about "neutering" the movie or Hard R's - imagine Talladega with "fucks" dubbed in every other word and ask yourself if that would have made it funnier or not. Will Arnett has never done anything funny outside of Arrested Development. Trust me, I rented Let's Go to Prison just because he was in it, i know. And was David Koechner ever funny? I'm just getting sick of him and Rob Corddry and various Daily Show alumni showing up over and over again. At least Adam Sandler's hanger-ons have something to do or say in his movies. Ferrell's posse think it's hilarious just to show up and mug. Oh, and Jackie Earle Haley is in it for like 2 minutes, I have no idea why Harry is making a big deal out of him.
