Before you start bashing the "nerds" and "geeks" in that group, it should be known that the nine-year-old daughter of the groups' founder, died of cancer just a couple years ago. Hasbro even dedicated a droid figure to her (www.r2kt.com)

I think the need to keep the cancer storyline intact in this film hits home particularly hard with the members of the 501'st and to them I say that I agree with them wholeheartedly and hope they are successful in their efforts.

Good luck boycotting all films with the Weinstein name going forward. It's a grandiose goal, and perhaps it sends a message, but wouldn't it make more sense to simply refuse to see FANBOYS? Regardless of the tone of the Weinstein cut, there's no question that the company would still rely on marketing it to STAR WARS fans. Convince STAR WARS fans to avoid it, and you've destroyed its audience. Based on what I've seen of this film, I really doubt Weinstein is going to draw much of a profit with the non-STAR WARS fans by promising mockery of STAR WARS nerds.

Regardless, it makes little difference - you know the special edition DVD will have all the versions, and at this rate this movie could be headed straight-to-DVD.
Frakking whiners.
by the_patriot
Feb 20th, 2008
04:41:42 PM
My god how people whine. Julie Taymor whined because she didn't get her 4 hour cut of Across the Universe and Joe Roth edited it down. Why? Because he paid for the damn thing.

The Weinsteins are re-editing Fanboys because they think it will make more money that way. Why? Because they paid for the rights. If the creators were silly enough to sign over the ability to re-edit the film when they sold it, then that would be THEIR asshattery - not that of the Weinsteins.

Much like the writers who bitched during the strike about how their visions are never really realized by the people who pay for their scripts - here's a newsflash.

If you DON'T want other people mucking about with your ART, PAY FOR IT YOURSELF AND RELEASE IT YOURSELF.

Or at the very least, negotiate your rights in the contract. But don't bitch about what the people controlling the pursestrings are doing with it after the fact.

That's a fair point, but I don't think I would dismiss it as "whining." I don't see any problem with the Fanboys potential audience expressing their disapproval and thus letting the folks who paid for the rights know that their decision of using this other cut is not wholly approved and thus has financial risk associated with it. Of course the Weinstein Company has the right to make the ultimate decision. No one is debating that. What they are doing is expressing an opinion using the only tool that the Weinstein Company seems willing to recognize: dollars and cents.

by Pennsy
Feb 20th, 2008
06:19:45 PM
Yes, it's emotional, but why fuck with the original vision? Mr Veldt, then:

"Honestly, if you're going to call yourself that, then fucking respect those that you are basing the movie off of - us the fans. We are the ones who made Star Wars what it still is today. We are the ones who make it live on, and always live on, through posters and memorabilia and every ounce of marketing that we embrace as collector's items. We are the ones that could finally have a voice and a representation in a movie named after us. Respect us. Respect us as we desperately cry out for you to keep the soul of this movie intact."

Or, if not broke, don't fix. I want to see this movie because I'm a KB fan. But not at the expense of the filmmaker's original vision.

...it never ceases to amaze me just how ignorant, intolerant, impatient juvenile and utterly pig-headed some of you talkbackers are. To those of you who HAVE NOT seen the film. YOU ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO PREJUDGE THIS FILM. PERIOD. Those that are ALL guilty of prejudging the film WAY OUT OF CONTEXT. I was one of the lucky 200 who saw the rough cut way back on the 14th July AT Star Wars Celebration Europe. All that version needed was sweetening. Y'know, I think I've done being quiet about dealing with the prejudgment pricks who THINK they know how this film plays out. The film is road trip, a journey and will make you ask just how far would YOU go for a friend? To the prick who said the film was "hackey" for the inclusion of the original cancer plot FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU WITH A BIG FUCKING STICK. I know it's "only a movie" but when you truly give a shit about something or somebody, and you know what is right - YOU WILL GO TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Ask yourself this. What would YOU want to do if you knew you only had so long left, which of your wildest, most dear dreams would you want to have fulfilled. A lot of people have missed the entire point of this movie. It's NOT about episode I itself (I personally like the prequels - but an argument for another time) it's about how a common goal can unite people and bring out the very best in you - done with a lot of reverence for the original trilogy and a lot of laughs along the way. To those who only ever complain, bitch and moan about pretty much everything on Ain't it Cool - GO FUCK YOURSELVES. Come back when you're grown up and can actually formulate an opinion based on having actually seen or read what you have decide to criticize. Moreover, to those showing a complete lack of sensitivity to those who have lost people to cancer or are dealing with it themselves - BURN IN HELLFIRE - YOU DESERVE IT. This also goes to those belittling those great folks in the 501st. They have done an awful lot of good in the world, and their tireless hard work dedication and selflessness to bring a smile kids faces is a lesson and example for us all. I may not be helping any cause here, but I have simply had enough. Yeah, some of you guys have indeed touched a nerve, and I've sat on it until now. Sure, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but like I said when it is totally and utterly baseless, you may as well offer up fresh air. I've said my piece; I'm sure some of you will be gunning for me. I shall not bother firing back. I'm getting this of my chest - big time. I could be more articulate in the way I've presented my thoughts, but some of you just want a slanging match. Not gonna happen. Here's to the original cut of Fanboys, maybe one day we'll all see it...and understand why people are so impassioned to see it the way it was meant to be experienced.

These days, something like 75% of the people in these talkbacks are rabid douchebags, spewing a constant stream of sewage all over the site. When did geeks take it upon themselves to start acting just like the inbred, retarded, knuckle-dragging jock assholes we all used to try to stay the hell out of the way of in high school? Only, instead of a list of things he wanted to do before dying, he wanted to see episode 1? I agree with someone earlier, the whole cancer thing is a cheap gimmick and ploy for sympathy.

It reminds me of the scene in "Out for Justice" where some guy throws a puppy out of a car window tied up in a garbage bag, and Steven Seagal rescues it to make his character seem like less of an asshole. Well, maybe thats not a great analogy, but its similar.

Maybe I'm biased, but I think those who are simply movie buffs are not quite in the same category as the people who dress up in costumes and go to Comic Con conventions.

I saw an early cut of the movie at star wars celebration europe (only the music wasn't set, the rest was), and I thought it was one of the best movies I had ever seen, exactly because it had heart. It showed geeks with respect, and at the end of the movie I felt happy and sad at the same time. I feel sad about this also, because we saw the director beforehand, and he was so proud of his movie, and really showed what a labor of love this was. He sees his movie killed now. Also, how many other movies are there that ridicule geeks? It is going to be a thirteen in a dozen movie now, in stead of the wonderful heart felt movie I saw. I for one support the boycott of the movie in the theaters. I cherish having seen the movie as it should be, and that is what I want to remember.

Civil war types are reenacting important historical events that actually happened. Their fanatical interest helps preserve and develop historical knowledge--these people are simply a bizarre subset of the larger category "historian." They also do arguably useful stuff, like stage demonstrations for schoolkids and whatnot.

Conversely, trekkies and star wars nuts are taking very seriously ridiculous fictions and doing so for no good purpose at all (aside from their own weird enjoyment). Star Wars/Trek can be fun and all, but it isn't real, and dress-up in Wars/Trek costumes doesn't do a damn thing for anybody, aside from maybe encouraging some people to go into careers in science (which is probably outweighed by the number of people that are dissuaded from going into careers in science, because the trekkies and star wars nuts make science look nerdy).

...almost belong to their own subset of mental illness, which belongs under the same umbrella as religious fanatics. It is an extreme form of escapism to avoid the harsh realities of their lives, so they have delved further and further into fantasy to the point of being delusional. The only difference between them and religious fanatics is that Trekkies and Star Wars nuts are pretty much harmless and they realize that their fantasies aren't real (though they wish with all their being that they were), but the same does not hold true for religious nuts who consider their fantasy worlds to be truth, and they as a subset are a pretty harmful bunch.

My impressions are probably colored by the one time I met any civil war reenacters. It was in junior high, and they had set up a big confederate army camp on the sports field. Students got to wander around and ask questions, and everybody I asked stuff of ("So, what kinds of food do you eat?") was very serious about separating themselves from the reenactment ("Same stuff as you eat, kid. Now, *civil war soldiers* on the other hand, *they* had mostly field rations").

The people you've encountered sound much more crazy.

I love the OT, and am as diehard as a SW fan could be, but these adult SW fans who dress up are the biggest bunch of dorks in the world. If you ever log onto TheForce.net, alot of them post there about how they relate Anakin's troubles through the PT, and how they felt sorry for Padme, even though she checked out on her kids? These people are outcasts that we called 'dorks' in highschool, and they are a much different crowd then the people who grew up with the OT, we wanted to be Han Solo cause he was cool, we wanted to be Darth Vader cause he was a bad moofoo, and we enjoyed the movies cause they were fun to watch. These closet cases think the PT is fucking Shakespeare with all the tragic undertones Lucas threw in there. The PT crowd has turned into Trekkies, where they are just a cult-dork group compared to OT fans when we were just a bunch of kids that liked the movies, yet we still played sports and went to parties in highschool.

These are not no-life shut-ins with no concept of reality. They don't think of themselves as characters in the Star Wars universe. They don't wear their costumes walking down the street like that creepy Peter Pan guy. They take their costumes to conventions, charity events, and various other shows. I saw a bunch of them just chilling outside Metreon when that Star Wars version of the PSP was released, and it cheered me up after a crappy day at work. Do you know why they dress up like Stormtroopers? Because it's FUN! Remember fun? I'm sure some of you used to have it at some point, maybe before the internet existed. I've met plenty of these guys at film and comic conventions. They have all been really friendly, laid back, stand-up guys. The kind of guys you'd go have a beer with after work. Ain't nothin' wrong with having a really nerdy hobby. Some people collect stamps or rare books. Some people paint miniatures. Some people collect memorabilia from their favorite sports team. These hobbies are even more solitary, and they don't do any good for anybody, but I don't hear them being criticized. These guys are skilled craftsmen who create movie-quality costumes, and show them off so that other people can enjoy them as well. Plus, they give demonstrations showing the techniques they use, and they do it all for free, although they have been known to raise money for charity. Not only that, but George Lucas digs these guys so much that he created a 501st Legion in their honor, and made it an official part of the Star Wars universe. They've obviously earned his respect, and they've earned mine as well.

Point being: surely going FOR the fans, while targetting a small audience, makes more sense than aiming at the "lets go laugh at dorks in a dorky movie" hypocrites. Though, you've encapsulated that for me perfectly actually, by posting a page with every Weinstein employee's email you could find collected in one place for you and your nerd army to harrass. The fact that these email addresses are available through google isn't the point - the fact that you collect them together and ENCOURAGE people to harass every employee of the Weinstein company you can find is beyond low. You people are scum. Harass the Weinsteins if you want, and are a loser extradionairre. But don't harass the innocent people that just happen to work for them. You have no right to be outraged by someone else's creative work. Take your rage and redirect it towards making something creative yourself - for example, some nice rainbow artwork for your padded cell. The Weinsteins can do whatever the fuck they like with the movie they paid for. Did you pay for it? No. Do you normally going around telling people what to do with something they paid for? Do you normally harass people for doing whatever the fuck they please with their own money? Do you tell people to redesign the garden that they paid for just because they have some garden gnomes and trolls that resemble your families? Do you normally get so outraged when people make some art with their own money, and their own time? I don't think the issue is whether or not it is a good film, or whether or not the new version is a better film. I think the issue is whether or not somebody should have the power to completely re-edit a finished film into a completely different film that defies all the intentions of both the original script and the movie as it was originally filmed. It sounds like that's what's happening here, and I think that's pretty shitty. If I were involved with the making of it, I would be pissed as well.

I'm not saying they don't have the legal right to do it. I'm saying it's a shitty thing to do. Let's say you commission an artist to draw a picture of a blond guy with green eyes and no facial hair. Then, after you get the picture, you scan it into your computer, and you recolor the hair blue, draw your own mustache on the guy, make his eyes brown, and give him glasses. Then you put the design on a t-shirt and sell it. The artist sees the shirt, and he gets annoyed at you. Sure, you have the legal right to do that, but he has the legal right to tell everyone what you did, and to be annoyed at you. Also, why the hell didn't you just pay the guy to make what you originally wanted? It's a dick move, but you do have the right to do it. And people have the right to call you on it. Yes, it's a fact of life that producers will always feel justified in pissing all over the creative work of others. That doesn't mean it is the kind of behavior that should be excused or encouraged, and I absolutely don't approve of blaming the creative types when it happens. The average Joe can't afford to make a movie, no matter how badly he wants to tell his story. He relies on producers, and he makes concessions, and hopefully what gets made is close enough to the originally story to fulfill the urge that made him create it in the first place. It often doesn't work out that way, but what choice does he have? I don't really like the "you knew what you were getting when you signed on" or "if you wanted to keep creative control, you should have done it yourself" attitude that a lot of people get in these situations. In this case, the guy who wrote the movie did try to make it on his own. He failed because he didn't have the resources. I'm not trying to pick on you specifically, kentrel. I just want people to understand that getting a movie made is freaking hard as hell for the average geek with a story to tell. Keeping creative control is usually not even an option. A storyteller has to sign with whoever he can get to give him money, and hope that he doesn't get screwed over, because the alternative (not even getting a chance to tell your story) is more painful. Bah. This is getting long and rambling. To wrap it up, all I'm saying is that signing the paychecks gives you the legal authority to remake someone else's art in your own image, but it doesn't give you the moral authority to do so. Being an asshole isn't illegal, but neither is getting mad at someone for being an asshole. As for the protest itself, I don't necessarily think they are going about it the best way. I am merely taking issue with the people who are acting like they don't have the right to be pissed off at what was done to their work.
Don't these dorks have anything better to do with their time?

Its a movie for christsakes. Just because they donated their silly costumes and played "extra" for a few days doesn't give them any sort of creative license or say so in what the movie ends up being. I'm sorry 501st, but unless I see a production credit at the beginning of this shit-fest, then you get no recognition from me.... kinda like always. Silly dress up characters and their silly wars. Like anyone at the Weinsteins really gives two shits about you attacking their death star. Buncha fruit cakes.
The 501st guys should be having fun but once

Regardless of how the battle ends, and even if the movie is never released, somebody needs to remind the Weinstein's where they come from.

And it said..." So after one of the groups friends gets sick it is nothing short of a moral imperative that the friends break in to George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch to watch the semianl sci-fi pic together before its release." So yeah, I had to type that. No cut and pasties here. So fuck you dorks cause I aint spending any more time on this film.

I have seen many movies, maybe more than you have seen in your life, mate :) I know I might be a bit sentimental, but yeah, I gave it 5 stars last year, along with many people who were in the room with me that evening. But maybe you have to be a. a star wars fan and b. have had to survive cancer or know someone who did to really appreciate this movie.

They gave their time and costumes but have no creative input whatsoever. It sucks that they were screwed like that but if they're expecting the Weinsteins to change their movie, they're being unrealistic. Having said that, the Weinsteins are asses who really cheated these kids and I will not be spending my money in seeing this movie
