When your last film was the biggest box office hit of all time and won 13 oscars, and you haven't made another movie in a decade, and consequently the hype surrouding this one is sooooo enourmous...there's just no way it will live up to it. Unless it's the greatest movie of all time. Which I doubt.

But this movie will be like TITANIC in impact. It probably won't make $600 million domestic because it's sci-fi, but it will make a LOT. It probably won't win 11 oscars because it's not a historical drama (which the academy definitely favors), but it will get a lot of nods including Best Picture. But it will change movie making like KING KONG did in 1933, like STAR WARS did in 1977, and like JURASSIC PARK did in 1993. It is the final frontier of special effects. It will be the most mind-blowing special effects film of all-time, WITH a story as compelling as all the SFX fireworks.

I'll be saying this in every single AVATAR talkback until December 2009. Then the rest of you will be saying it also.

by HEADGEEK
Feb 20th, 2008
04:48:47 PM
Beowulf was not "PHOTOREALISTIC" - What Jim is attempting to accomplish is digital creature effects that defy the eye's ability to discern whether or not it exists in the physical plane with objects and characters that are there. There is LIVE ACTION and DIGITAL work at play. This isn't BEOWULF - I haven't seen the work yet - but from my conversations with Jim, that is what he's aiming for. The film will take, literally, a year to just RENDER and that end result will be in 3D. Skyscrapper - you're right - Lucas did attempt this sort of thing, but the effects were very shy of being photoreal. Jar Jar was definitely in frame, but never believably so.

I saw it 3 times in the theater when I was 12 -- the first movie I went (way) out of my way to go back and see again and again. I had to bullshit my way in every time. I kept waiting for Cameron to make some stupid misstep (most genre films then -- and now -- almost always got things partly right, then just fucking blew it), but he never did. It just got better as the movie went on. Truly formative experience that I cherish 20 some years later. I'll love Cameron for that till I die.

Feb 20th, 2008
06:56:21 PM
...I'm going to have to take up skycrapper's point. Whatever you think about the inclusion of Jar Jar Binks in Episode I, by Episode II Lucas had achieved what Cameron proclaims to be still striving for on AVATAR. If you can separate your feelings about the design of characters like Jar Jar Binks, the Kaminoans or the arena beasts on Geonosis from the realization of those characters onscreen, then you can't objectively dispute that all are as much a part of the resulting imagery and appear as organic in the settings of the film as any of the actual flesh and blood human beings presented in the same frame. By Episode III, the integration of the rendered forms of characters like The Clone Troopers, Wookies, Yoda and R2D2 (granted Artoo isn't organic by definition) were so seamless as to be indistinguishable.

I remember all the reviews saying it was the first photoreal character and made Jar Jar look like shit. Basically Jar Jar was the attempt and Gollum was the final product. There are so many moments in the Two Towers where you can't tell if he's real or not, there were 2 parts I thought "Ok they used prosthetics and a model for this close up" turns out in the making of docos it was CGI.

I could not watch that movie more than once. I understand the respect many of you have for Fincher, but seriously, Alien 3 was weak. Aliens is a fun, scary, quotable classic.

"What Jim is attempting to accomplish is digital creature effects that defy the eye's ability to discern whether or not it exists in the physical plane with objects and characters that are there." - didnt we see this in Jackson's "King Kong"?.. and with Gollum and Yoda? - they all appeared to exist in the physical plane with objects and actors - imo - is Weta doing this? - i wonder if they will put some direct harsh sunlight on the creatures this time - as good as their stuff looks, they tend to bathe it all in diffused or over cast type light - my theory is, because it takes less time to render diffused lighting it helps in meeting deadlines - i remember many years ago in an Alias modeling & animation class i was told that direct lighting (like harsh afternoon sunlight that casts hard shadows) takes much longer to render - thats one thing i admire about ILM, say what you will about their designs and animations - but theyre not shy about putting their stuff in harsh direct sunlight, where theres no where to hide any seams

I followed Titanic's dominance at the box office. Gone With The Wind is the only film to make more globally in '08 ticket prices. ANH gets the bronze, worldwide adjusted (initial release). Now I'm a Star Wars fan, but realized TPM had no shot at the ship- even had it been another ESB. Yet fans ripped into Cameron as if HE were Michael Bay. Lucas was God at the time. A genius, whose revolutionary new Star Wars film would obliterate the boat at the b.o., and in Vader-speak "restore order to the filmgoing galaxy". Now it's Lucas who's a talent less hack. Jim is now William Wyler, Cecille B. DeMille, and Orson Welles combined. Funny how perceptions change. TPM's failure helped people appreciate Cameron more. Sadly, it has had the reverse effect on the creator of Star Wars and Indy. Funny how perceptions change.

"Titanic" is the one Cameron movie i can do without - i saw it once, and that was enough - it killed at the b.o. because tens of millions of teenage female Leo fans kept going back for more - at the time, my niece was one of them - it was the right vehicle for the right star at the right time with the right audience - box office gold - TPM was heavily hyped, i agree - but i wouldnt call it a failure because it didnt earn more than Titanic - im curious to see how Avatar fares against the monetary success of Titanic

What are you talking about, every opinion I have is objective. Eg my argument that Marvel is releasing better comics at the moment. Even thought 80% of my pull list is DC. I say Weta is better at effects because the are better, no matter if ILM innovated it. I'm talking straight presentation. it's not that ILM is bad, my pissed off ILM arguments died when Pirates 2 came out and they finally seemed to catch up with Weta, now the playing fields are alot more even. unlike up to ROTS where Weta dominated since Fellowship.

That "la la la i'm a pansy and a star wars fanboy and ILM is better because they did CGI first, if it wasn't for ILM there would be no WETA" If it wasn't for Black Sabbath there would be no Iron Maiden. Failed argument.
Aliens wasn't filmed in 70mm
by half vader
Feb 21st, 2008
04:15:35 AM
Hey there Messi. That would have been super cool. They play a 70mm print here downunder sometimes.

It was shot in Super 35 though, like most things Cameron does. But seeing a 70mm print is infinitely superior even if the film didn't start out that way and is more like looking at an answer print than the usual blurry 35mm crapped-out print at the local shithole. HD may not be truly equal to the 'rez' of film but it's fuckloads better than the actual experience you get in the local monsterplex. It used to be that effects plates were shot on 70mm (well 65 without the stripe but anyway) to allow for optical generational loss. Now the majority of the time they're mastered at 2k (only a few more lines than HD). Interesting to see how Cameron handles the digital this time around.

Anyway yes Aliens Rulez. Was it the theatrical cut or extended?

... it's a 'my SFX are better than all yours' cock waving exercise! Thousands of CGI artists the world over suddenly realise they've been wasting their time all along 'cause Jim Cameron says so. Explain to me why 'this will rock' again? This guy hasn't made a movie in years. No one seems to mention 'the story' - is it any good? Personally, I'm tried of watching characters that aren't real on screen in some stupid CGI monstrosity. The dinos in the original Jurassic Park still look good to me because the story is so good and I'm carried along with it. That's all that's needed. If I'm sat in a movie theatre thinking how cool it all looks, as a storyteller, the moviemaker has failed miserably unless all you wish to please is some dunderheaded cgi fanboy who should really be sat in front of his PS3. The notion of what is 'Photorealistic' moves on every six months. This is all grade A bull excrement.

I was a kid, and was not old enough to see it alone, as it was rated PG-13, so I bought a ticket for something else instead. Also, Aliens came out when they had just revolutionized sound in theaters, and Aliens was one of the first movies to utilize it. I think it was the THX system, but not positive. But that scene where all hell breaks loose and they are surrounded by aliens and everyone's going ballistic, and Ripley drives in to rescue them - that was insane. The sound and action was electrifying. I had seen nothing like it before, and the action continued from there.

Awesome flick.

Wow - just to hear a filmmaker be so challenged, and to be enjoying it so much, makes me feel very excited to see this film. 3D doesn't really interest me, and the story of Avatar is interesting to me only in that it's fresh sci-fi content for the screen instead of another retread, but obviously James has his heart pumping and his brain overheating and he's still smiling - that's worth being there for!

but i still disagree with you on TPM being a failure - and i like Cameron too, but i wouldnt call any one of his movies "perfect", despite his "perfectionism" (but "the terminator" comes close) - and as far as pushing cinematic limits, 3D isnt anything new - and for it to really work the viewer needs near 20/20 vision - which i dont have - wearing that robocop visor over my thick glasses kinda kills the fun - this movie should stand on its own, minus the 3D presentation gimmick - and im sure it will (i hope it will) - it sounds amazing - i guess Lucas, Cameron and Zemekis want to do with the visual presentation of a movie what surround sound did for the audio - but im in the camp that feels movies were meant to be seen in 2D - theyre a window - a moving picture - not a holo-deck or a theme park ride

First off, Episode I's phenomenal box office was based on it being the first Star Wars film in 16 years. Had it been better, it MAY have given Titanic a run for the money as domestic champ. Now where do I begin? Jake Lloyd...Jar Jar...Pod Racing...battledroids... I can go on and on. Aside from the lightsaber duels, Liam Neeson's presence, and a very badass Sith named Darth Maul there was little else in TPM. The storyline was convoluted and uninteresting. At least the soundtrack was memorable. With all this said, George Lucas is a genius. He created the saga. He created Indy. 'nuff said.

the big (actually HUGE) differences between TITANIC and THE PHANTOM MENACE are:

- TPM wasn't loved. People were just eager to see a STAR WARS movie in theatres - either again or for the first time

- TPM has no good storytelling, no memorable characters, no sense for pacing, no thrills

- TITANIC doesn't have an annoying-as-hell, kiddie-compatible CGI character or bland human characters which utter forgettable lines between the CGI showcases, etc. etc.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not trying to defend TITANIC, I'm just still PISSED about that fucked up STAR WARS movie that should've been sooooo much better...

but then i didnt pin all my SW hopes and dreams onto it - and i still like watching it - i only saw Titanic once back when it came out - but i digress - i like Cameron - "the abyss" is a great movie - sadly, seems almost forgotten now - too bad he didnt give us some more "alien" movies - he used a lot of that Titanic money to satisfy his oceanic itch - which i admire - but i woudve liked to have seen some more ambitious scifi escapism from him since 1997 - better late than never i guess - i expect to be blown away by "avatar" - it sounds like a definite blu ray purchase

Years ago, there was almost ALIEN 5 with Cameron (as a writer) but sadly those Fox suits decided to make a certain Vs.-movie instead...

I would've loved to see more sci-fi-action flicks from Cameron beyond 1997, too! Too bad he went underwater instead. I expect to be blown away by AVATAR, too, at least I put all my hopes in it.

2) I would have to disagree with you concerning THE LORD OF THE RINGS having the same SFX impact as KING KONG, STAR WARS, or JURASSIC PARK. Although Gollum is a truly amazing effect, there are just too many sub-standard effects in the trilogy.

Why would anyone right now go to the trouble of blowing up Aliens to 70mm? It must be an old print. I think this is BS too. And I also think LOTR has way too many naff effects but then so many films with CGI do as they haven't the time or the money to complete in such a short space of time. I fear quite soon a lot of these films will look terrible and in fact already do. And lastly why anyone would defend TPM is laughable. It's a truly awful film.

one9deuce. also I do think LOTR had the same effects influence and it's not my personal opinion, the two most talked about things from LOTR that you would hear on every tv show, every review, every person you talked to, every message board even the fucking news was the visual effects and the cinematography. It had the first photoreal effects, how much was gollum brought up when Two Towers came out and the battle of Helms deep and Fellowship was the first movie where people thought what was effects ended up being real. The problem is guys like one9deuce and metaluna*theres always those dudes who disagree) are such small voices with opinions that don't make sense, LOTR is considered by many people and those in the industry as the high point of effects. Why? Because it had the first photoreal effects and the first purely real superimposition.

Photoreal effects in LOTR?

I don't think so. Gollum looked photoreal, but the Warg battle? Pitiful. Very, VERY few times did I think I was looking at something that actually existed in real life while watching LOTR.

AVATAR will make you believe that they took a spaceship to the planet Pandora and actually filmed on location. It will be MINDBLOWING! Not because of WETA, but because of James Cameron using WETA. The man made us believe that Ripley in a Power Loader was fighting the Alien Queen and he did it with a lot of miniatures! In 1986! The key to that scene is the rotating spotlights on the deck of the Sulaco, and brilliant editing between the miniatures and the full-size equipment. Trust me, AVATAR will own.

WATCHMEN and AVATAR in 2009! A long overdue return to great genre films. Finally!

Avatar would have to be HUGE, but he's the only guy in the vicinity of catching the 'berg at the box office. (PJ needs two huge Hobbit films). Cameron has claimed Avatar to be his Star Wars. If it is a quarter of that, he'll be unstoppable again. The pecking order would be Cameron, Spielberg, Jackson, Lucas-- as a sci-fi director. Then I'll expect all four of them one day ...along w/ Coppola, to give some long suffering great director his elusive Oscar.

I'm a big LOTR fan, too. PJ's films are very well made and deserve their awards. Just don't compare them sfx-wise to Kong '33, ANH, JP, ...and The Abyss, T2, Blade Runner. Those movies changed the industry in this regard. I've noticed many flaws in Gollum and disliked many of the depressing shot renderings of Fellowship. One scene with Frodo and Galadriel where she becomes a wraith looked positively laughable-- ranking with the worst of Jar Jar. Add to that, Frodo's irritating blank stare and ugh!

Many times in the battle scenes you can see examples of looped animation cycles just look at the guys climbing up the ladders. Aliens was certainly intense. Abyss S.E., though to this day, is the most difficult film shoot in recorded history. Man's infinite capacity for stupidity and fear were redeemed by Virgil Brigman. Moved me to tears when he brought his wife back. Now that was intense. As I posted earlier, Star Wars fans were beating their chests prior to May 19th, 1999. They mocked Titanic and scenes like this one in the Abyss. When I think of a loved one in critical, the words "fight, fight, fight!" just don't seem so simplistic to me.

From what I remember, the special edition of Aliens only exists on video, where it was cut together for the Laserdisc box set.

Consider that alongside the grainy film stock that was used, either 'to give it a documentary feel' or 'it was just what the film stock was like at the time' depending on what day Jim is interviewed, and there's a limit on how good Aliens can get. The last THX transfers were basically it. HD will just show up the film grain more. Which is a pity.

. . . bear names from mythology (though, to quibble on a side point, that's because most of them were named by people a thousand years or more ago), that's different from how *fictional* planets (or countries or people or whatever) are named.

In fiction, the author/creator gives names to things with an eye to how that interacts with the rest of the work. Some names have attached to them great contextual meaning; some don't. This is why characters in movies often have names like "steve" or "jane" or "rob", and not "jesus" or "magellan"--authors are wise to not load something's moniker with a lot of meaning if their work has nothing to do with that meaning.

Here, apparently, a planet that figures centrally into this avatar dealie is named "pandora." "Pandora" has a huge amount of meaning tied up into it, in part because of the idiom of pandora's box, in part because it's one of like three greek myths that are *still* taught to schoolkids to this day.

Thus, if Cameron is naming his planet pandora, he's either a) unaware of the meaning tied up in the name, in which case the name choice is stupid, or b) the name is supposed to help convey the idea that the planet is a box of troubles for mankind, which makes the name choice eye-rollingly heavy-handed.

Which doesn't mean of course that I think that the movie will be bad (after all, Cameron doesn't really make idea-movies; I'd describe his stuff more as solidly built and technically highly accomplished), it's just probably, as Herr RedSky said, strike one.

And another thing messi...

that was one conversation on the subject you and I had like nearly two months ago. Let it go, man! So I think differently than you do--don't let it ruin your day, lad. I mean, really, I'm amazed you even remembered that little disagreement you and I had. I had no idea that some little off the cuff disagreement about effects left such an impression that you harbored negative feelings a full 60 days or so after the fact.

Look, I dont mean to be mean or cruel or anything; I'm just lending advice, is all. Try not to take everything so personally. Not every comment or disagreement is a sleight against you, Messi. Trust me, when you start to take something as petty and trivial as friendly discourse as serious as, say, a religious jyhad, you're going to find your days pretty joyless.

Hell, if I started taking disagreements that personally, I could never work in schools, have friends, or even be with my wife. After all, they differ on their opinions about film, politics, and even clothing styles with just as much conviction in their rightness as I possess in mine. You say you are being objective, but please try to understand, so am I; it is possible to have two opposing, objective opinions.

Sorry to ramble there, its just that I was so surprised that you took something this trivial so personally as to sling insults to complete strangers months after the perceived incident. Honestly, just relax.
