The Batman is in its fifth and possibly final season. I've watched this animated series, and it has had its good points. But I'm ready for a new animated series, and I think going all-out anime style and airing it on Adult Swim would be the way to go.

The Justice League and DC animation looks like absolute crap compared to this. How come American animation pales so much in comparison in terms of character design, detail, and execution? One wonders why animators over here don't put as much into animation so what we get in the end is one-dimensional looking characters. I will admit, though, that the first Batman animated series was superbly done by American standards but animation has actually degraded from the 80's to today.

than just about any other company. It's nice to see them trying to introduce American audiences to an entirely different kind of animation. I'm not a huge anime fan, but it would be nice for people to know that a cartoon geared towards adults does not have to be a knock off of The Simpsons.
Another example is Disney animation....

If you look at Snow White, done in the late 30's to what they put out now....... Don't you think that with all the technology we have that 2D animation would have evolved? I mean even limited animation done today should be on par with Disney's earliest efforts. What happened?

but if it is designed to bridge the gap between the two flicks, then why does it have Man Bat and Killer Croc? I mean, arent Nolans films supposed to be "realistic"? A guy who legitimately is a giant bat, flying around doesnt really fit into the tone of the new films like....does nobody else think that? Has Nolan even been consulted? But regardless, Ill be lapping this up-looks far better than that "the batman" crap! when is it out in the UK perchance?

Bruce Wayne looking like a big-eyes, small-mouthed GIRL who DOESN'T MOVE except to blink and move his mouth on occasion does NOT impress me.

Anime was stupid, worn out, and overdone in 1989. It's even more tired and ridiculous now.

Perhaps instead of taking good character from American work and turning it into anime shit, they should take some of the anime characters and turn them into decent western comic book characters.

Oh, wait. There are no good anime/manga characters, unless you're into yaoi or yuri or samurai or demons or ninjas or furries all of these in one book / movie.

Why won't this Japanophile fad just DIE already? Anime is not "more adult" because it has tits and blood. It's just POOR ANIMATION with barely any movement, a lot of "motion lines" and AWFUL, contrived stories that are mere vehicles to get to the tits and blood.

And yes, I used to collect the shit. I was into anime before most people in the States were, but around 1994 I figured out that it was repetitive, unoriginal shit and stopped wasting my time with it.

Enjoy this you otaku freaks. Nothing makes you guys happier than when anime directors shit in your mouth and call it art.

I was wondering when he'd show up! Look at this man gents! Feel his passion! Revel in his ignorance! I'd probably continue making fun of him but it now appears certain that his attitude towards anime is perhaps connected in some way to some uncomfortable moment in his life that has left a deep scar on his heart, and possibly his manhood... and that is a sad thing, yes a sad thing indeed... But take heart Zeroman, you can always find batman as you love him on Justice league or some other show on cartoon network which ironically also feature characters with big eye designs, but at least they move around and squash and stretch a bit more because as a rule you'll need that sort of thing often to keep children entertained because the everyday stories probably aren't enough to do that on their own...

But seriously folks, Zerocorpse and his moronic sweeping generalizations aside, American studios are perfectly capable of putting out animation, perhaps even better than the Japanese because they have better budgets to do so unlilke the many cottage industry studios in Japan who must therefore resort to lesser quality animation because the time and money ain't there for everyone. But American studios won't, because they only largely focus on kids and anything tailored to adults has to be simple designs and comedy because they feel it's too risky to pour money into animation for more mature audiences, outside of comedies of course... Also The Japanese background art, even in low budget shows is simply way way fucking better.

Anyway since I'm here I'll pick apart Zerodumb's criticisms some more... No good anime characters he says? What does that make the Miyazaki movies then? THen he goes on to list genres like Yaoi, yuri and furries which I'm sure are the only things he's familiar with, becuase as we all know porn movies are the perfect place to find epic stories and great characters. Secondly anime isn't 'adult' it's simply any animation produced by japan for children, teens, adults, commercials etc. However if you are looking for animation aimed at adult audiences, then frankly anime is the only place to look for it because American studios prefer to stick with childrens and family friendly stuff. And lastly I for one will enjoy Gotham Knight shitacorpse, and I'll leave it up to everyone here to look at the video and judge for themselves whether it looks like shit as the corpse-man is trying to convince you that it is.
Regarding Anime.

I agree that most anime sucks. Most, not all. I'm a fan of Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, and Miyazaki's stuff. Most of the other crap I've tried to watch was absolute shite. Usually, when someone likes anime it's because they think it's unique and different and thus makes them unique and different. Too bad once you watch enough anime you realize how repetitive it all is.

That being said, there are some wonderful visual aspects to anime. One of the reasons I like Akira is the way they present Tokyo and I would love the same attempt at portraying Gotham City. I also think that melding anime with American storytelling might fix some of the excesses of anime. Besides, I love how malleable Batman is as a character and absolutely love seeing different takes on him.

Anyone who would imply anime like Ghost in the Shell is badly animated or filled with effeminate characters of the big eyes small mouth variety needs to be shot in the face with a hammer. Anime is a very expansive art form with many genres. In other words, don't hate, just accept the fact american animation needs to grow up. Or to be specific, the studios and suits who decide what gets green lit and what type of product we get needs to stop feeding into the stigma that american animation has as a childrens media and take some chances.

I was watching an episode of Thundercats today. The Zero's preference for a quality style of animation is 'Duckman.' Because it's edgy and unique! None of that so called big eyed anime bullshit to be found there. Yes folks, ZeroCorpse would prefer that the Batman be animated in a style similar to Duckman rather than what WB is presently giving you. We all know Animatrix had no variety of styles whatsoever... it was all the same thing wasn't it? Zerocorpse thinks so and all you present otaku fools should listen to him because he was there back in the summer of 89! ...but I agree that, for the most part, it's entirely overdone and played out. Look at any random page on Deviantart.com, it's almost a requirement that you draw in anime style if you are a kid these days. And I'll admit, anime artists are usually pretty talented and display a good grasp of the fundamentals of drawing (especially backgrounds), even moreso than a lot of other professionals, but if all you can't draw anything BUT anime style (like a lot of kids today) you're a lesser artist than someone who has worked to develop their own style. It's lazy and repetitive and frankly boring to see all these artists with potential churn out drawing after drawing of big eyes and lipless mouths because they never bothered to branch out from their anime roots. Like Michael Wincott said in the Crow, the idea has become the institution, and now it's a cliche. Which isn't to say that this Batman project will be a disappointment-- AFAIK there hasn't been a straight anime interpretation of Batman, or at least I haven't seen it-- but it's hardly a revolutionary achievement in animation.
Micheal Keaton should do one of these in the Future
by Demode

If they do a sequel to this when pNolans thgird movie comes out, they should use Keaton for one of these anime episodes. Since this shows various interpretations of the Batman, it would be a cool way to get Keaton back. Just imagine Keaton going up against a re-imagined Riddler or Two-Face. If they could create an animated episode done in the Burton style, I think it would be amazing to see.

Anime is still quite young on US shores. I do agree that a bit too many people like to just ape the style without thinking of trying their own visual look, but Anime is hot right now. It'll die down eventually, but haven't you ever ridden a fad real hard? You never wore your jeans a certain way, or spoke in a way that parent's couldn't understand?

These animes are plainly not set in the "more realistic Batman Begins universe" - they have sodding Killer Croc in them. I reckon this is an independent Timm project that's been loosely tied to TDK in an attempt to shift a few more DVDs. I'm not falling for it.

For all the talk on anime 'style'
by Johnno
Feb 16th, 2008

Yes I also have to agree that everyone has been imitating it, for one the simple style is pretty appealing to many people, it caught on. In any case there is plenty of anime that have different artstyles. Different studios also have their own unique look. Everyone seems to have latched on to the one short of Gotham Knights that does have that style and are writing off the entire project which is pretty fucking dumb. The most recent example of anime that breaks from the norm is one called Tekkon Kinkreet, I suggest everyone check that one out! Studio 4C does some amazing stuff, check out their music vids from Mixed Nuts, there's even the Genius Party Anthology coming out, there's plenty of experimentation done in anime.

The same kooks coming on these boards complaining about the typical style must be willfully ignorant about all this and are hypocritical at best, plenty of the DC toons all have a similar style in every one of them... Clark Kent is basically Bruce Wayne with glasses on... Disney cartoons all carry their signature style and look, there's nothing wrong with any of that. I would very much agree that American studios have more variety to their character designs across the board, but the incessant bitching going on by some people here is bloody absurd. There's way more to anime that fucking dragonball and bleach. The reason anime is popular for many people is because it basically is the only cultural medium that creates animation for mature audiences. Yes, we like animation and we'd like to see more aimed at people of our age. Just as there are many people out there that like Videogames and like M rated hardcore titles. It's ironic that the American videogame industry is far ahead while its animation industry is stuck making shows strictly for children. I guess we just have to wait till all the folks that think animation and videogames are only for children die off before we get anywhere.

And Yotaruvegeta... as for fads, I honestly can't recall being a part of one... well I did collect Spider-Man and Marvel cards, and started buying comics during the Venom/Maximum carnage times when it was popular and stuff but I doubt comic books are considered fad-ish... sure there are times when titles or something may gain a lot of popularity, but comic book aren't going anywhere, they're an established medium, anime is the same, it's been around for awhile and is still going, only every now and then you get some insanely mass market popular commercial things like Pokemon or naruto or Dragonball Z or something, but even when those shows come and go anime will still be around, anime conventions wil be around just as sure as there'll be comic book expos or Star Wars/Trek conventions... it's a geek culture, but unlike the geek stuff beloved by many on this site, anime took off big and reached more worldwide popularity and there are many people here who for some reason feel extraordinarily bitter about that where it makes them inane enough to bash it so as to elevate the art styles and things they liked that were a hard sell for the mass market. Maybe those same people ought to stop and consider that those big eye designs and so reviled 'homogenous' designs may have something to do with it? It was cute, it was appealing, for many it was easy to draw and express with... More people love it! The Japanese people like their effeminate men and cute pop star girls and large ass swords as much as Americans love their muscular steroid men and big breasted women with guns large enough to compensate for something. Since more people like a certain style more studios will try adopting it to grab as many viewers as they can. It all depends on the audience they're aiming for. Anime fans in general like all kinds of animation, but they're also looking for something more suited to their age and tastes, and that's something only Japan has been providing. Can anyone look me in the eyes and tell me that America has ever put out anything the likes of Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, Evangelion, Texhnolyze, Ergo proxy and other sci fi material like that? Nope!

Maybe Animatrix and stuff like Gotham Knights and whatever the Terminator people are up to will start a trend, of course we're still getting anime studios and directors to do it but maybe some local places will pick up on it too. Or maybe the status quo will remain and America will do what it does best with children's entertainment and 3D Pixar movies (which is all fabulous) and leave the more mature stuff and visual experiments to the Japanese. Whatever... all I'd like is for hypocritical/ignorant people to stop talking shit. I like animation, and I'd like to see more done with it and I feel American superheroes and other great comics deserve to see themselves realized in animated form as something more than just Saturday morning cartoons... What would you guys prefer? Do you actually want Watchmen babies??? Todd McFarlene's Spawn was awesome! It fit the comics! This Gotham Knights anthology looks like Batman has actually come off the pages! Sure that one short that takes up the manga style of Bruce Wayne doesn't quite fit even to me, but get the fuck over it, you know all that other stuff you saw? That's anime too! Anime doesn't always have to look the same you cretins! Pop in Animatrix and look at the different styles on it! Watch Genius Party, Robot Carnival, Katsushiro Otomo's Memories, Akira, Steamboy, Tokyo Godfathers, for fucks sake, none are so blind as those who can't see. The guys behind this Batman project probably made a conscious decision to purposely include that style so that there's something for everyone in there because God forbid many people actually do like the fact that Bruce Wayne looks like Kira from Death Note, which by the way is another awesome show with good character designs that America will never have the balls to do. Frankly I'd welcome if more studios got off their asses, told Hollywood to screw off and taken their properties and worked together with anime studios to bring them to life. I'd love to see an anime anthology of various styles for Neil Gaiman's or Alan Moore's stuff. Everything from Sandman to Maus to Constantine to The Punisher would probably all come out amazingly in animated form aimed at older audiences without a need to sanitize it in front of focus groups. The possibilities are endless and as much as some of you fuckers hate it only the Japanese are willing to do it! So if American icons can only be done by anime companies, then there's not a damn thing you can do about it so sit at home and sulk and miss out. I on the other hand will encourage more of this behavior. The Japanese have proven they can make plenty of quality shit with the proper budget and Gotham Knights is looking fucking awesome! Alright, I'm done I'll shut the fuck up now, just tell me the release date for this thing and I'll be there!

Batman: The Animated Series was inspired by this fad anime stuff. It's one of the main influences per every person who had a hand in creating the show. Bruce Timm and others used it to come up with the streamlined style and Eric Randomski, the true force behind the original Fox series got the black paper for the backgrounds idea from it, as well. My animation friends in Canada, who developed the original BTAS pilot in the early 90s told me all about it when they sent me an SVHS of it from the original 3/4" tape a few years ago. It even had the original soundtrack on it unlike the horrible quality version on the first DVD set. They filled me in on all the behind the scenes fighting between Timm and Randomski when it came to both style and tone. Eric won out in the end and the classic became what it became.

those who watch anime obsessively. I remember back in college there was an anime club that met once a week to watch long ubersessions of anime. Guess what night they chose? Friday night. Look, it was all fine and good for those people to have a hobby, but not in lieu of a social life. So, my point is that there are a lot of weird people who watch anime. I know that shouldn't reflect poorly on the actual films and movies but sometimes a bad first impression has consequences. I think I'm slightly biased against anime myself in part because of some of the weirdos who watch it nonstop.

That being said, if you claim you hate all anime you should really check out Miyazaki's stuff. It's actually really imaginative and relies on scope and character rather than blood and guts. I agree that too often anime relies on blood and guts instead of telling a story (which is why I think Ninja Scroll, while it has its moments, is highly overrated).

Anime is a fad only in the sense of it's recent popularity. The style has been around since the early sixties -- check out Astro Boy, King Kong etc. cartoons from that time period. Hell, even Speed Racer. It virtually hasn't changed in all that time -- it's always been low end animation. That's why you see so much of it today -- it's pumped out product; most of it follows the same template -- just give the characters different hair color and - voila! - a new series! All I'm saying is that it's the "boy bands" of animation. Yes, some will vehemently defend their favorite "band", only to look back years later and wonder why they were so passionate about melba toast. It was manufactured shlock 40 years ago, it's manufactured shlock today. But shlock has it's place -- hey, if it turns you on, cool -- have fun. No harm in it. I just like to see iconic characters like Batman in the best formats possible. And anime is not it.

along with a few other poster's ignorant bias regarding Anime. Anyone who would think said medium is about big eyes,J-pop and naughty tenticles obviously have'nt seen enough to really critique it.

For the most part Anime jupiter-sized rings around American animation with it's storytelling alone. Atleast the japanese have the balls to include pathos wherein major characters actually die. unlike the cop out from the transformers and especially the GIjoe movie,(both animated in Japan BTW) in which Duke's death scene was changed thanks to kids and teens reaction to Optimus Prime's death.Gimmie a "frakkin" break.

American animation hasn't been good since the Timm/Dini stuff and even they had to bow to the FCC's standards and practices guidelines.

I'll tell you what Zero and Snorkeroo, you stick to watching The Batman, legion of Superheroes while I checkout Devil May Cry,Witchblade and the upcoming Appleseed Exmachina.Fair enough? XD

Is like saying live action movies are fads... Anime is already an accepted alternative medium in Japan on par with live action films and television. As long as they continue pumping out that stuff for the Japanese audiences there will always be anime around. Anime is simply an animated medium. Naruto, Dragonball and Bleach and Pokemon and specific titles may be fads... but anime as a whole is simply animation. It just happens to be animation being done in a specific country catering to a variety of tastes. If anything it is American animation that is more in danger as a whole of stagnating because they refuse to grow and only stick to doing kids stuff, the problem is kids will outgrow it. As long as there are kids around the American medium will exist, but anime can cater shows to every age group so one can watch that sort of animation throughout their life.

Yeah there is a lot of cheaply produced anime, so are practically many foreign art house films that many on this site adore. But aniem also has it's big budget stuff, the likes of Akira, Steamboy, Spirited Away, Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress, Howl's Moving Castle, Ghost in the Shell, Innocence, etc. that in my opinion far outshine anything in the entire history of American animation in quality, depth, imagination and sheer scale!

Because of cost. Most "American" popular animation is sourced out to Japanese production houses. So claiming "American"-made animation is much like claiming an "American-made" car. It may be an American company, but it's outsourced like everything else. Which is why so many American cartoons have jerky motion -- because, you guessed it, the grunt work is shlocked out by the same houses that produce anime boy-band quality work.

the writting, storyboads, production and voice acting is done by Americans. Everything else is farmed out to Korea as it is much cheaper to handle the animation chores as oppossed to Japan. Talk about bad animation, let's do some comparisons shall we? Most of the animation from say.. Spiderman and his Amazing friends were lame, uninspired and very dull with the noted exception of episodes like A Firestar is born and the origin of Spiderman. why the exception? because those 2 episodes had more dynamic, better hue contrast and not some Hanna Barbera cookie cutout. Marvel Productions obviously saw the potentual when they had Japanese studio Togi (If I'm not mistaken) handle the animation chores.

Thus began the one shot X-Men pilot, GIJoe animated comic commercials and Miniseries and not to mention Transformers the Movie. Compare those to Filmation's He Man and the Masters of the universe..uh, there is no comparison, Anime,Jpanimation as some may call it dominates the animation market.

It appears that you (Snook) have not seen enough examples of Anime to make such baseless statements.

But as a consilation, America is currently pwning the Japanese when it comes to producing Videogames (which was once dominated by the Japanese)..until MGS4,RE5 and FF12 turn the tide.

The level of effort is going to be different depending on the target audience, return on investment, etc. Filmation was basically two guys in a basement, so it's not a good benchmark. Disney and Ralph Bakshi, and Max Fleicher Studios are better (American) examples. Is the whole plethora of anime crap? No -- like everything else, there are varying degrees -- Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away are examples of excellent work within the genre. I don't like the style, personally, and I hate to see one of my favorite icons -- Batman -- reduced to that level. I'll pass on "Gotham Knight"; however -- if it turns you on -- terrific, go enjoy yourself.

Although I consider myself to be a casual fan of Anime, that's not to say that I wouldn't vest my time in watching American produced series like Justice League Unlimited which I own every disc or XMen evolution. And I have already seen New frontier which is worth the purchase, as I have preordered awhile ago.

In a nutshell don't let your bias prevent you from watching the upcoming Gotham Knight, I suggest you watch the entire movie/OVA you just might change your opinion afterwards, if it does nothing to dismay your opinion, atleast you can say you gave it a chance.

There's much crummier stuff to worry about like for instance how Marvel fucked up the Ultimate Avengers movies, and now coming soon: Teen Avengers!?!

I resepcted Filmation for their contributions like cranking out the old DC comics cartoon series as well as my childhood favorite Space Sentinels, but it pretty much went downhill from there especially after watching the fluff that was He Man.

And although I priase both Disney and Bakshi for their previous works, I lean more toward the superhero/scifi genres which are bountyful in Anime. And now Disney is mostly going CGI as you can see

Anyway gotta run, it's quitting time. Peace.

"Anime is better because it's for adults"
by ebonic_plague
Feb 16th, 2008
04:39:00 PM
I think "anime is for teens" would be more like it. Sure, there is a subsection of anime that is intended for adult audiences (and not in the regular porn kind of way), but most of it is obviously aimed at teenagers. You've got your pokemon and digimon for the youngsters, and the occasional Akira or GITS or Cowboy Bebop for the older crowd, but most of the popular stuff is, honestly, still fairly juvenile by conventional artistic standards. Not that "american" animation is much better, it's all pretty juvenile with few exceptions, but anime isn't automatically Shakespeare in comparison, especially when the monotony of style means that characters are usually reduced to stock mannequins distinguishable only by their hairstyles and accessories, and further hampered by a typically bizarre cross-cultural translation. I'm not going to even discuss artistic standards for content in video games because I feel like they are the digital equivalent to Bazooka Joe comics. But both anime haters and lovers need to come down off their high horses and see that it's just another kind of cartoon.

It's not simply defined by being for children or being for teens, etc. I think the eastern approach is to look at animation and comics as a holistic art form. Every thing's been pigeon holed in the US for so long people think that's just how things are done. Not to say that anime doesn't follow various formulaic trends, they do. Their just a bit more flexible with them than US animators.

If they decided to risk more mature animation, then I think we would see some attitudes change. Not that Disney is always the best quality studio or anything. But even with DreamWorks and others doing animated films, Disney is still very influential especially with Pixar.

I think, maybe, Disney needs to add a spin off production company (kind of like Touchstone) that produces more mature animation. And I don't necessarily mean adults-only. I mean some kind of Indiana Jones, "older kids to adults", themed films. They did try that a little with their Atlantis movie for example. That tanked unfortunately. But still, with the way the industry is, I think someone like Disney has to lead the way. And I only suggest a new "label" because any cartoon that says Walt Disney Pictures in front of it will be expected to be "for kids".

A feature film done in the Timm-esque style, with a long production and detailed style would be nice to see. But I guess I'm more thinking of the Fleischer toons his style was based on. I mean, you look at those today and it's very well done animation. And it's an American style. I'm not saying you can't base things on some other foreign style, but it just seems that too many people are unoriginally emulating the Japanese style. Why not something new?
Anime didn't screw over the American animators
by Johnno

They did it themselves by only sticking to one target audience, then the older kids began liking anime, the younger kids like to follow what the older kids are into, American suits looked at anime and said copy them! But all they copied were the character designs and pasted them on the same kids TV shows. Honestly let's examine the WB Batman series we all started to love... American animation today doesn't hold a cnadle to it! Here's why... Political correctness and concerned groups and psychologists and other party pooper people who set guidlines as to what children's entertainment should follow. I highly doubt there's a chance in hell that the original WB Batman would pass todays criteria for some of the stuff it shows. THe Mark hammil Joker was a psycho and actually managed to convince us he was fucked up and dangerous! There would be fights, Batman would engage in dangerous and scary situations. Today a lot of this shit is sanatized... Suits would prefer it if superheroes didn't do anything too imitatable by kids, and that all guns and bullet be replaced by some kind of laser beams. Honestly, I recently read a book on writing for animation that warned about all this kind of stuff and what to put in and not put in and watch out for, it was really freaking pathetic and formulaic. "some please think of the children" kind of stuff. Can anyone actually think storylines like Batman's Knightfall or Spider-Man's Maximum Carnage can be delivered in teh climate of such standards tailored for family audiences? Yeah, if you sanatized the fuck out of it! And another thing to consider is whether the aesthetic appeal of teh character designs would also work with it... the American style as you see now is friendly and appealing, exactly what charaters designed for kids should be... But if you want to get the visceral and badass and dark feel from the story, then you're better off with mroe detailed, more fitting designs and artistic direction, the exact sort of variety you are seeing in Gotham Knight. The appearence and direction of the art can do wonders to enhance the story. Which Batman would appear more menacing and deadly? The saturday morning cartoon Batman as we've known him? Or any one of the 6 styles you see in this video? Animation is art people, and the lines and details and imagery all contribute to the final effect. This anime is for the rated R audience that are adult fans of the Bat and of Nolan's films.
