I don't understand. I like the show so I'm happy it's being renewed. You don't have to watch the show, there are plenty of other shows for you to enjoy. You act like a show should be universally loved or panned. There will never be a show that everyone likes or that everyone hates. The sooner you understand this, I think you will find life more enjoyable. Have a nice day.

"How I Banged Your Mother".

Also "Criminal Minds", especially since they added the Dad from "Joan of Arcadia" and the boss from "Andy Richter Controls..." And Kirsten Vangsness is totally hot.

I also like Ghost Whisperer. Did you see that one episode where she ran down a hallway in slow motion while wearing a negligee? Brilliant!

Also, "Welcome To El Capitan" is the best show with an acupuncturist in it since Eli Stone!

Columbia has come a long way since the days of "CSI: That's All We Got".

Your comment on LOST is stupid and lazy. You're basically saying, "I have the distinct impression that there is no underlying scheme to the tension and release being employed. Therefore, I am being gulled or manipulated, and, therefore, the art in question is -- you guessed it -- 'stupid.' " Now, in order to make this argument, you need to perform a rather blind leap of faith: you need to convince yourself that, since you can't see the underlying scheme, nobody can see it; which means, most likely, it's not there. In other words, there's no viewer/reader on earth who could make heads or tails of this (even though they aren't close to being done telling the story), which naturally means that the writers can't make heads or tails of it. This is, not to put too fine a point on it, a bad argument. If I can't follow something, I'm going to assume (in order) that either 1) I missed something (which would apply, really, to any LOST viewer who hasn't seen every single episode); or 2) They're withholding something they'll reveal later (which, while certainly annoying, is a far cry from "stupid") or 3) They're withholding something they plan to NEVER reveal (also frustrating, but not exactly a novel approach to the narrative arts); all of this is far more feasible than 4) They don't know what they're doing; it's "random," which, it seems to me, is the least likely conclusion, especially if you haven't been watching carefully. I have been watching carefully, and I have been consistently rewarded by LOST's games of "tension-and-release." I've seen a fair amount of "keep-'em-guessing" television (including X-FILES and TWIN PEAKS) and it's fair to say that LOST is the least manipulative, arbitrary or un-planned plot I've ever seen. Over three seasons I've been consistently amazed at how well the pieces fit together and how intelligently the puzzle reveals itself. If somebody wants to say, "this is too intricate and I don't have the patience for it," fair enough. If somebody wants to say "they play it too close to the vest; it's an aesthetic choice that turns me off, due to my woefully short attention span or my inability to consistently watch the show despite iTunes, DVDs etc." that's fair too. But to conclude that "LOST is beyond stupid, because its choices are random and arbitrary" is not a reasonable conclusion. It's ostrich-like: "I can't see it, so it must not be there." The fact that millions of people are evidently seeing something that's invisible to you should be a tip-off! Whirlygirl's correspondent is basically telling her, "You know all that stuff that you can see on LOST, that I can't, because you've been paying attention? It's not there! My fleeting glimpses of the show give me that impression, so I must be right and you must be wrong." And that, if I may say so, really is stupid.

About with hate of How I Met Your Mother? I remember Ausiello said that while it pulls in decent ratings for its time period, the big boss hates the show. 07:49:54 AM
Look, say what you will about most of these other shows, but the Unit is an amazing television show. Every single show grabs you and holds you. The 2-part season opener, Pandemonium, was one of the best scripted dramas I've ever seen on TV (paraphrased "You know there are only six wealthy families and they control everything and have all along. Every once in a while, they let someone inside. That's what I'm offering you") That line was uttered by Rebecca Pigeon, the wife of David Mamet who writes the show. If you haven't watched it, you're in for a treat. If you're ignoring it because it looks like a JAG or something, its really good. And if you're an executive considering cancelling it, please don't.

I did think it was crap when I first watched it, but with nothing else on because of the strike I watched a few reruns. It actually wasn't that bad.

I much rather have HIMYM back, but Big Bang Theory is decent enough to get me to continue watching.

BTW, it's time for a resurgence for the sitcoms. I am tired of reality TV and crime dramas. Bill Cosby revived the sitcom in the 80s from near death. We need someone with some clout (Jerry Seinfeld perhaps) to come in and revive the genre.

I'm certain to get flamed in my first talkback, but I could lurk no longer. First, Big Bang is the most utter crap I have ever seen on television. The only people who enjoy it are the ones who make fun of the brainiac geeks who are portrayed in it. The people who are portrayed or so sterotyped, it's actually painful for me to watch. Why not a hip-hop black guy, or an Indian guy who runs a convience store? Those are no less insulting. Next, while I'll agree that Moonlight is a 2nd rate Angel copy, I like the characters in it a lot even though the storyline is somewhat thin, the characters are deep enough that I enjoy watching them. Finally, I've wondered how Jericho and The Unit surivived, even though I love both shows, just because I assumed that they weren't mainstream enough. But then mainstream gets rating, not quality, which is why so much crap gets renewed (how can anyone actually watch CSI Miami, Caruso makes me want to go postal he is so bad?) when innovative and well thought out shows get the axe.

Not renewing How I Met Your Mother, but renewing shit like Ghost Whisperer, or worse versions of another sitcom, like Big Bang (which is probably only due to some agreement they have with the creators, in regard to Two and a Half Men). It's not like HIMYM is doing bad in the ratings. It is eve ngetting Emmy nominations. If this show gets cancelled, now, when it's doing arguably their best, and most mature storylines, with no resolution, I'll be incredibly pissed off. I don't get too upset over stuff like this, but this is jsut ridiculous.

Feb 15th, 2008

Shows like "Lost" require patience, deep thought and creativity. The average middle American television viewer hates "Lost" for those very reasons. After a long day behind the register at Wal-Mart, they want to be regaled with mindless entertainment, e.g. "American Idol," "Survivor" and the aptly titled "Simple Life." God forbid if any television show exhibited even the remotest sense of depth and characterization without spoon feeding it to the audience.

The only two shows on the CBS lineup that I watch:

The Unit rocks, plain and simple.

Moonlight has a developing story arc & characters, and has Sophia "Girl In The Fireplace" Myles

The only problem with the Unit, actually, now that I think of it, is that last season they changed the opening title music to something REJECTED by "Enterprise" as being even more horrid than the "strength of the bowels" theme song selected for Enterprise.

My appologized for any insult you felt about being sterotyped, but that doesn't change the bad, over the top sterotyping of the show. Some of my best friends are 200+ IQ, game playing, social recluses, and it's no wonder that the "cool" people laugh at them when this is how they are presented. I didn't find that show funny, I found it insulting, discriminating, and embarassing. Of course you like the Jock football drama of Friday Night Lights, which I loathed. But then my wife went to highschool in Midland/Odessa, and I like football, so no wonder I didn't like the bad teenybooper soap opera, because it's just 90210 pretending to be a football show.

So I can't know multiples of smart people, but a show that degrades them has a bunch, including 2 that are roomates? IQ numbers are arbitrary, and pretty much unrealistic anyway, and the *number* I used was to prove a point, not to be literal. Howe about "I know a lot of exceptionally smart people, including those that are on par with the indiviuals sterotyped and portrayed on BBT." Is that better? It doesn't change the fact that I find the show highly insulting, just as do all of the people in my circle of friends, regardless of how smart you think they are. It might be different if the show was funny, but then the writers making fun of geeky things like video games, comic books, and social awkwardness just reminds me to much of me year ago, which is depressing rather then entertaining. As for Friday Night Lights, you're mostly right. I haven't watched 1 whole episode. I havent' ever been able to get through a whole one without turning the channel. I really liked the movie, and watched with a hope that it was along the same line, and instead it was a soap opera. I've been told that the performances are great, but I couldn't tell. Mostly it comes back to my impression that you were one of the jocks in high school that laughed at the geeks. BBT makes fun of the geeks. FNL glorifies the jocks. I was one of the geeks who was picked on by the jocks. It makes me biased against both shows.

... TBBT stereotypes their geeks. Geeks of that nature never leave their house and actually aren't all that smart. I'm not asking them to romanticize geeks, just fucking know one before you write a show about them.

Not sure how I gave you the impression that I was ever a "jock". That totally baffeles me. I'm not nor would I ever try and convince anyone to find something funny as comedy's totally subjective. But I again will argue that TBBT does not stereotype the bookish in a negative light. I just dont see it that way. Humanizing geeks is just that, and I find it pretty fucking funny.

How I Met Yo Mama is not going to be cancelled. It just hasn't yet been renewed. The show gets good ratings in the right demographic. I don't think it has a lot of competition in its timeslot, Mondays at 8 pm (not many people are tuning into Prison Break, and Fuck Deal or No Deal). I don't think it's "on the bubble"

Exactly. This writers' strike made me realize that I don't miss The Office, but I do in fact miss How I Met Your Mother. And mthrndr, I understand what you're saying, and I agree, but, if people at CBS do hate it, it's not impossible they could shelve it in favor of something slightly worse if it'll give them less aggravation.

Lighten up. You find a sitcom insulting?! I'm a geek as well but I don't really give a shit about how they're portrayed on a fucking TV show. It's a matter of perspective. You say the jocks on Friday Night Lights are glorified (not to mention stereotypes) and I agree that the geeks of TBBT are also stereotypes. But I think they are being glorified as well. Regardless, it is a fucking TV show and if you are capable of being insulted by a work of fiction created to generate ad revenue then you must have a lot of repressed anger from all the times the lacrosse team shoved parking cones up your ass.
Jericho will die

Unfortunately, the ratings for the season 2 premiere of Jericho were worse than any episode in season 1. So much for fan support - I thought it was a good start to the new seven-episode run. No way will this be picked up by CBS if ratings continue in the cellar like this. This is a great show that CBS trashed by splitting the season last year, delaying the return until now and dumping it into a crappy time slot.

Moonlight's no Angel

but that's probably a good thing. Because there's only one Angel. Not every vampire show is the same. While Whedon's world was a mixture of genres, concentrating on fantasy, heightened operatic drama, ironic comedy and social commentary, Moonlight goes a more traditional old-school noir route. I'm with people who say they like it, even though they didn't initially want to. There's still plenty to be critical of here, but it's made a few plot choices that I thought were interesting and different, and I've gotten somewhat attached to the characters. It really reminds me of an 80s show to a certain degree, which could be a good or bad thing. As long as we see more of Jason Dohring's character, and Shannon Sossamyn (way hotter than Dr. Who's girlfriend).

Please renew How I Met Your Mother, it's my favorite comedy after discovering it in it's third season. Big Bang....is pretty good but they cast the wrong nerd as the star and the girl is not likable. It deserves to grow at least another season so good on it. But as many have said before me, how can they renew Big Bang and not How I Met Your Mother?

Get on the ball, CBS, everything on that renewal list is worse than The Unit.

I have several friends who are professional writers and who correctly scorn most TV for the crap that it is. They are invariably impressed or even blown away when I show them HIMYM. The third season has featured a series of structural innovations that are a master class in innovative storytelling. It's certainly one of the best half-dozen shows on TV and is neck-and-neck with The Office as the best comedy.

How many people know that showrunners Bays and Thomas got their start as collaborators as co-authors of MTV's "Lord of the Piercing" (you know, Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar at the Council of Elrond), which is merely the funniest re-edited movie clip skit ever?

I actually like a lot of these shows. "How I Met Your Mother" has always been funny and it even survived the reveal that Neil Patrick Harris is gay in real life. I think the only thing that sucks about it has been something evident since the very first episode, the future narration with Bob Saget blows. Get rid of it. Make it focused on the now. As for "Shark", I'm surprised that it is near the chopping block. Since my mother likes it so much, I thought it was assured to be a hit with the Boomer demographic...I mean, "Old Case" always gets renewed. I like "The Big Bang Theory" even if it is trying to shoe-horn every single former cast member of "Roseanne" onto the show...maybe a few more "Doctor Who" references thrown in will serve to calm down my bitter feelings over the fact that "Roseanne" and their bullshit cliffhanger with her husband's heartattack was one of the ratings nailings in the coffin to Fox's attempt to revive "Doctor Who" back in 1996. That or Joss Whedon's head [hey, "Angel" ain't on anymore so what's his use today?] on a stick or a Swingline red stapler. As for "Moonlight", I enjoy it. Mick needs to lose that lame car of his though. Sophia Myles is hot...she was hot in "Underworld", she was hot on "Doctor Who", and she is hot here. The cast is great, and the series is starting to pick up steam. As stated in this thread earlier, it does have an 80s tv - syndicated - vibe to it...a lot like "Forever Knight" but with a budget higher than $5 (US or Canadian). Mick's best vampire friend is a cool character. Hell, I propose that they get him a steady vampire squeeze...and now that Michelle Ryan is free from "Bionic Woman", why not give her a shot? Just dye her hair red like she had in "Jekyll" and the ratings will go up guaranteed.

We are not laughing with you we are laughing at you. if you think the big bang theory is awful and it is. The lilly Allen show is a such a monumental joke it has to seen to be believed. Lilly Allens dad is actor, author, film maker and hellraiser keith allen. He had a chat show in the 1980's that nobody remembers. it was called whatever you want. it was buried very swiftly and no clips of it remain. some bright spark decided that his daughter should get a comedy chat show. It is called Lilly allen and friends. the whole concept of it is that it is based on the social networking site bebo. So lillys friends are who ever the team pulls of her Bebo page. oh and Charlotte Church is coming back, Her show is actually quite good. First series was a right off but her second series was suprisingly good. now if she can only drop that annoying theme tune bit at the start i might watch. both Lily Allen and Charlotte Church are both on Channel 4 and e4. E4 is howing the big bang theory. Allen anc church are classed as comedy. odd. There is a profile of Ricky Gervaise on during. from his days on xfm to superstardom.

Both are sub-par imitations of much better shows, namely "Angel" and "Friends." The only redeeming thing about How I Met Your Mother is the chance to see the great Neil Patrick Harris every week -- otherwise everyone else on the show is totally lame and unfunny (yes, even Hannigan). Moonlight is laughable and ridiculously melodramatic -- like the worst of the worst vampire romance novels, and except for the wasted Jason Dohring, the cast sucks. I'm surprised that both shows have lasted this long.

...you mean the Tit Whisperer? At least it is her front and center and not that James Van Prage (sic) who is the consultant to the show. I'm afraid if it truly were based upon him and his experiences, the title character would be listening to everyone's inner "fabulous" spirit. Come to think of it, that would work well on Bravo or Logo.

I started watching HIMY-mom's just to see if Allison was doing some fun and good work. The show very much suprised me, given the writing and how eventually the story comes full circle. It's a pretty creative show and Neil Pat Harris is a funny mofo. (Slap bet ep rocked) The other plus of the series is for Buffy/Angel fans as they throw in a bunch of cameos including: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Tom Lenk to name a few.
