The art of trailer-making (which is a different art to filmmaking) has developed to such a degree over the last twenty years that nowadays, NO action movie can possibly hope to live up to its own trailer. It pains me to have to explain this to (apparently) intelligent people - but it UPSETS me when intelligent people HAND OVER THEIR BRAINS AND MONEY to a MARKETING CAMPAIGN. So now let's look at some FACTS: 1. You have seen about a minute and a half of footage, designed by the best experts in the business to get you excited. Yes, it's fun - but it's NOT the movie. 2. The MOVIE itself (not the trailer - the MOVIE) has been made by three people who were at their best THIRTY years ago. The magic is long gone and they have proved this over and over again. 3. The basic premise of the movie was cooked up by George Lucas - Spielberg and Ford HATED it for years and refused to have anything to do with it. Now HATE is a strong word. The story must REALLY suck. 4. George Lucas came up with the story. George Lucas? Do I need to remind people? Do I REALLY need to write twenty pages explaining why this is wrong? 5. Spielberg and Ford were ready to shoot the Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption) script. Now THAT I would like to see. But Lucas rejected it so we get the Crystal Skull instead. 6. Like the Star Wars prequels, Lucas is continuing the franchise by introducing a 'family' element: Shia leBoeuf being Indy's son and Marion Ravenwood being Shia's mom. Just like the Brady Bunch. Aw, that's sweet. Hope they put in an adorable and comic housekeeper and some canned laughter too. 7. The history of resussitated franchises isn't exactly inspiring. I'd say there's a hit rate of one in twenty managing to come up to the level of the original. Lucas' invovlvement in this area needs no comment from me. 7. Lucas is involved. That's George Lucas, permanent nominee at the Razzie awards. And no, he doesn't care what you think.

Funny, I actually omitted a few sentences referencing just that. I think *many* movies lack photographic subtlety these days - like what you're seeing in this trailer. Compare the texture/look of movies today to films of the 70s and 80s, for example. There's a *big* difference in their overall appearance. They look more like sitcoms now, instead of nuanced pieces of art.

I've seen all of the Indy films numerous times and I don't understand how anyone can hate any of them honestly. They are all great action/adventure films and I simply cannot imagine myself watching an Indy film and going "God, I hate this movie!" I am pretty sure that Speilberg wouldn't risk destroying the legacy of Indy. Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls is going to kick some serious fucking ass, so fuck you to all you jealous naysayers who couldn't direct a movie with the amount of talent in Spielberg's prostate. LONG LIVE INDY. I will be there on day one with my ticket, my coke, and my popcorn. WOOOOHOOO INDY IS BACK!!!! but somehow for me, wasn't. I don't know if I want to see this now. I was pumped for a new Indie flick and was convinced that Mr Ford, despite his age could pull it off. Anyway, here's a question: at one pont in the trailer there's this young guy running along the top of the crates, wearing Indy-style clothes. He jumps off the crates before they cut to a shot of Ford hanging from his whip. Who is the young guy, though? Is that supposed to be Shia?

exactyl!...all the production stills for this had the same "too clean" look. I felt the same with the SW prequels. Among a zillion other problems, one was that everything felt very flat...not enough shadows, no grain...very non-dramatic lighting when compared to the first 3 films. I think a certain amount of grainy film and more natural lighting really helps suck you into the "reality" of a film. (raiders and star wars did exactly that). So far too much of this feels staged. of course we know it IS staged...but it shouldn't be obvious. This new Raiders (i assume) warehouse stuff is a perfect example...i know the end of raiders was largly a matte painting, but we bought it as being real (and awesome!). In these new shots I can almost feel the crew's presence and the caterers on the other side of the doors. But something about this seems to lack a certain organicness(?) that an indy film really should have. Don't get me wrong I'll still be first in line.

I agree about the 'comic' timing before he delivers the line. "I thought it was closer". The two guys in the truck wait five seconds for him to say his punchline and then allow him to hit them. Now THAT is as bad as anything Lucas did in the Star Wars prequels: it's on the same level. Those two actors must have been embarrassed to be forced to act so unnaturally.

And yet Lord knows every last one of you will be in that damn theater seat on May 22. Raiders is my all time favorite movie. I've seen all of the Young Indy flicks, have read all the novels - I was so nervous that this tteaser would let me down in fact I couldn't imagine it living up to my expectations and yet it blew me away. I love the look. Ford looks and sounds great as does Shia. These movies are a throw back to the old serials. Even Raiders had those over the top moments where a quip is thrown out in the most unrealistic time, but there was enough darkness, enough seriousness and enough of a human quality to the characters that made us all care. Sometimes I think some of you make up your minds to talk shit and NOTHING could have ever changed your minds. Thats sad. Do yourselves a favor and allow yourself to be entertained like the days back before you could get on some website and give your opinions like someone gives a shit. Before you could try to be the "cool different" one thats DOESN'T like what everyone else does. As for me, I had goosebumps and a big goofy smile on my face when I watched it. I think that when he said "I thought that was closer" it was perfect timing because the 2 guys were still in shock about what happened so he still had time to punch them out. Indy is used to doing shit like that but those other 2 henchmen aren't used to that shit so they were stunned by it. Besides, if he said the line after he punched them it would've been too late and it wouldn't have worked as well. Besides that, if you watch that part of the trailer again, you can obviously see that it was heavily edited for the trailer because when he is swinging down the truck is going the other way so that prior scene may not even go with the subsequent scene the way it showed it. I highly doubt the two go together like that.

Just because it's not mentioned outright as in "here's the part with the Greys, Jesus." ROman 3:18, doesn't mean that their aren't aliens. Look at some of the creatures in the Bible like the creature that Ezekial meets or a lot of the things from Revelation. I believe that God created everything. And that there has to be life on other worlds and if it is highly more advanced than us, who is to say that they don't have their own form of Bible. It's also funny to hear people say they believe in aliens but they can't believe in God. When the universe is so vast and so beyond our understanding and yet we still claim to know it all. I don't even care if you believe in the Christian God, but how can you not believe that there isn't a creator(s)? I think that's kind of small minded.

Now, this seems to be beyond the ability of fanboys to imagine, but there are people who can use their intelligence to make a decision and stick to it. I'm not seeing this movie and that's all there is to it. There's NO NEED for me to see this movie. You guys will all blindly see it and complain about it afterwards. That is worth more entertainment to me than the movie could possibly offer. I also don't NEED to SAY I won't see it and then go and see it. That makes no sense. I don't need to do that - that WOULD make me an idiot. I've learned enough about this movie already to know that it is a waste of time. And that trailer, skilful though it is, let slip some of the problems the movie has - such as the poorly timed and ill-advised 'humour' and the fact that half the time, Indy is being played by a young guy in his twenties !!! ( the guy running and swinging from the crates).

Actually, I sort of disagree with you there. Since it's an election year and Americans are more involved in the election process than ever before in this country's history I think it's actually a good idea to show the flag like that. There are a lot of positive campaigns like Obama's that give Americans a lot to be proud of. When I think of America I don't just think of the mistakes that the Bush administration made in the past 8 years. I also think of all of the wonderful things that our country has done in the past decades. Besides, this film will take place in the 1950s so it won't have anything to do with the Bush administration's misdeeds and miscalculations.

From your comfortable home on your nice computer? Right after you read an article on our likely soon to be African American President? ...wow. Need I go on? I'd say we have lots to be proud of. I'd say Indy (as well as the time this movie is set) makes the flying of our flag completely perfect.

Third time was the charm on the prequels. So I have every confidence that this film is no Phantom Menace. Plus, this film wasn't even directed by Lucas, but rather by Spielberg himself. He's been out of the rollicking adventure movie business for a few years, but based on this trailer I think he's still got it.

Rat fink, i don't believe you've read the Bible. Why don't you pick it up and read Job sometime. God speaks to Job, tells him to gird himself up like a man and answer his questions, and asks him questions, like "do you know where the morning star lives?" Job can't answer because God is so much bigger than him. Not all information is meant for us humans to understand.
Critch, I don't believe God is as you so beautifuly put is "santa clause in the sky". If you had the power to create anything you wanted wouldn't you do it. Is the world better with nothing in it or with something? and if there is no God, than all life is meaningless, it doesn't matter if you are good or bad because you will die be forgotten and it won't matter anyway. Therefore if you even live to the life expectancy you still spend most of your life asleep so who gives shit if all you do is rot in the ground. People say they only believe in science but isn't science always contridicting itself? 100 years ago people thought that draining fluid out of your brain was releasing ghosts that caused headaches. so the whole "science as a religion' is a stupid argument because science is always going back on itself.

Circular logic. The fact is, even IF one, several or all religions are "right", and aliens aren't mentioned in the Bible, that STILL doesn't mean one precludes the other.

TOD had a holy, decidedly non-Judeo-Christian artifact in it which was just as real as the Ark and the Grail, which implies that all religions have some sort of truth to them. If one can swallow that, aliens shouldn't be that hard.

because you are predicating your argument on the notion that all of us fanboys who go see the movie will complain about it afterward. I didn't complain about Transformers after I saw it and I am a Transformers fanboy. I didn't complain about Spider-Man 3 after I saw it because I'm a Spider-Man fanboy. In fact, when other people were talking shit on them after they saw them, I was one of the people who defended them on here. So you're wrong about that. I will probably love Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls and I will probably defend it after I see it, but I can't say that for certain until I see it. And I suggest you quit complaining about it until you see it as well. You mentioned that trailers can be deceiving, but that works both ways. Yes, a trailer can seem really cool to some people and then the movie blows, but at the same time if this trailer was underwhelming for you, it is possible that you could find the movie enjoyable.

As far as tone goes, and I liked TOD as far as pacing, etc. What can I say? I'm stoked. It may not be Raiders, but I think it'll be pretty good. And it wasn't one liners that was the problem with Crusade, it was the inconsistent tone and the blahness of much of the final act. The pacing wasn't quite right, and I never bought the father/son thing. Still, not a bad film, just not up to the first two, but even if this is Crusade redux, it's worth seeing in the theater.

by CM1986
Feb 14th, 2008
09:40:28 AM
Everybody should relax, this was a contemorary trailer made for today's contemporary idiot audiences. Remember, Spielberg is very open about his distaste for short and quick cuts, he prefers long takes. Well, this is a short and quick cut trailer, so obviously it isn't quite going to gel. Seeing Indiana Jones in Michael Bay mode just doesn't work! But luckily the film itself won't be that way... And lastly, watch the teasers for the last couple Jones movies, and you will see they are all deliberately corny. The only thing this one needed was the voice saying "INDIANA JONES IS BACK". My bet is a lot of the footage here, like him going through the truck, probably doesn't even make it into the move. Or if it does, it will be so minor it flies right past us, like some of the other tongue-in-cheek moments of the past ones. They may have really missed out on the nostalgia factor with this one, there could have been a MUCH MORE original take on the whole thing, but I have faith. The CGI sucks though, and the footage definitely isn't grainy or B-movie enough.

Sure visual F/X have never been off-limits in the Indy pictures, and they wouldn't be here. But in film, more importantly, important franchises like Indiana Jones and Star Wars, you commit to a universe. And when that real universe is completely altered by glossy, fake-looking, animation in place of the more authentic-looking ILM stuff, you have a big problem.
