TOD had a holy, decidedly non-Judeo-Christian artifact in it which was just as real as the Ark and the Grail, which implies that all religions have some sort of truth to them. If one can swallow that, aliens shouldn't be that hard.

4) Why people don't like Last Crusade: On the one hand, it tried too hard to be Raiders of the Lost Ark Part 2 (something you could never accuse Temple of Doom of doing). On the other hand, a lot of the characterizations just rang false, especially Brody. That said, Crusade had some good parts (and it makes you want to weep to see River Phoenix pulling off the perfect imitation), but compared to Raiders it just pales.

Never mind that he's being a disingenuous prick. No, 3po is not the same as Jar Jar. Even in the original in 77 3po forgets himself, drops his facade and pleads to donate his own parts to help his friend. Which made him a lot less one-dimensional than Jar-Jar. Poor old George just cannot take criticism.

Now, I do want to say that religion also provides the *tools* for an atrocity (jihad, inquisition, etc), but the underlying motivation is usually based on a different factor.

When I saw Superman Returns in the theater there was someone actually translating the whole movie to spanish. they were not whispering it either.It was full volume. That pisses me off more than anything Lucas could ever do.

Space monkeys, on the other hand, are just like you an me, except with better technology. Nothing mystical or adventurous about it, or at least, not in a way that calls for an artifact-hunter.

Basically, the difference is this: part of the fun of an Indy movie is that the struggle over the macguffin is, in the real world, a little comic. Nazis can't really take over the world with a fancy ark/jewbox or an old cup a famous guy may or may not have drank out of (nor can people be enslaved by special rocks, even in India). This is what makes the stories fantastic. Conversely, alien technology would undeniably be useful for nazis/communists/witch doctors, so there is no element of fantasy involved in them (unless you go the new agey route, which has even more problems).

Additionally aliens, by definition, have nothing to do with humanity, or human history (chariots of the gods and other vaguely racist-flavored books notwithstanding), so if the plot is aliens, why involve Indy at all? He isn't a scientist, or an exo-diplomat or anything. At best, he'd be like a guide or something for the government types.

Or maybe not. Maybe there are no aliens in this, or maybe the creative geniuses behind rehashing a 20 year old trilogy are clever and inventive in a way I'm not seeing. In any event, I have thought too much about this. As have, I suspect, many others here on this board.

But as the alien-looking crystal skull photos and "mummy/skeleton" pics have essentialyl proven there's some tangible evidence for them in this film, I've gradually (and reluctantly) accepted they will likely become part of the Indyverse.

There's a small glimmer of hope left inside that I'll be proven wrong by some great plot twist, though.

I suppose THIS sequence could have taken place in the past, but I highly doubt it for seveal reasons: 1) Indy looks as old as he does in the rest of the trailer, 2) nothg so far has led me to believe Blanchett is an old rival of Indy's and 3) Blanchett looks exactly the same in that scene as she has in every other scene in the trailer and pic we've seen so far.

I wish Abner was still dead and there had been no retconning, but alas, it appears not to be.

The way his death is left so vague in Raiders (in retrospect it's a gaping hole ripe to be retconned by the Beared Ones), he could easily have been captured and Marion told he was dead.

My suspicion is that the his capture was related somehow to the artifacts involved in this new film. The Soviets are now close to solving whatever it was ABner was working on (or stumbled upon) many years before. So, they brought him to this place now that things are coming together (for reasons I assume will be expained inthe film.)

If you did not get a buzz from that trailer you're either dead, a fish, or you don't geek on movies or your a dead geekless fish!

Another fact also remains... I, too, am eternally disappointed with George Lucas for screwing the Star Wars pooch. Every time I think about how he took his status as a legendary figure in moviemaking and threw it away with both hands the way he did, I shake my head... it's just sad. We all need to keep in mind, however, that Spielberg is still at the helm, and although he's spent the last two decades being Mr. Serious Filmmaker, I still believe in him. He makes the good stuff, people. So I am willing to give this a chance.

AND, just so you all remember... Raiders' success was a FLUKE. Spielberg made this movie as a throwback to the pulpy action films of his youth. It was never supposed to be such hallowed canon as it is. So lighten up.

In other news, I thought the teaser felt a little slow, it just didn't flow smoothly enough and it's pacing seemed a bit off. That said, the footage and the film itself looks great, and I honestly can't wait until this hits screens.

I initially had a similar reaction to that line in the trailer as one9deuce because ot felt a little "wink at the audience". I'm over it, though.

And if the trailer looks too pristine, that probably has a lot to do with the digital processing of the original film negative and the subsequent color grading (as stated above) now routine in today's filmmaking process.

The return of Ford as Indy, and Stallone of Rambo has really been a breath of fresh air to me, a reminder of a time where there wasn't a Logan's Run type attitude when it comes to an actors age and their related filmic usefullness, and if it wasn't for guys like Christian Bale and Viggo Mortensen doing well these days, I'd just about give up on Hollyweird altogether.

My fiance's like "she was so obviously in denial". I guess it goes back to esteem issues and people that don't feel their good enough to stand up for what they really want.

That trailer REEKED of indy. Those who whine about TLC jokes are forgetting the dead monkey/"bad dates" and the sword twirler who gets shot in Raiders.

Goofy 30's serial humor has always been a part of this series.

So has over-the-top cliffhanger action, which this trailer has in spades.

Same goes to those who are saying Raiders' action was more subtle. Give me a break. And the effects were more subtle too???? Like in Raiders when the villains' faces were melting and exploding? Or when the equivalent of CG for that time appeared when those ghosts came from the ark and killed the nazis, flew around, and hell, even looked at the camera??? That was SUBTLE effects?

I'll give you the bad timing of the punch line when he went through the windshield, but I'm willing to bet it's not edited that way in the movie. Besides that, it looked frickin' awesome.

And regarding this whole alien thing... I'm willing to bet that there's an angle we're missing here that links everything to the ark and overall Christianity. Everything is not as it seems. But it's 100% better than the stones in Temple.

So RELAX. You can't bitch about the movie until you've SEEN THE MOVIE. And if you play the whole, "I won't pay to see this..." angle then you're a tool because you're basing that off of 80 seconds of footage. So don't see it. Your loss. You aren't some genius though... just a cynical guy who's not willing to let the movie speak for itself. Lucas didn't direct this. He didn't have a say in the shots, the direction, etc. You think Spielberg is going to let that happen? This is Spielberg's movie. He wouldn't have agreed to direct this flick had the story been lame and the script terrible. He wouldn't have done it. He doesn't NEED a blockbuster. He's fucking Steven Spielberg... worth hundreds of millions of dollars. he doesn't NEED anything. he made this flick because it's a labor of love. He loves that character. Settle down people.
