I thought that was an impressive trailer. It had a good build up with a satisfying sneak at the movie. Just watching, and maybe it's just the bootleg quality, but the video looks so old, and so unlike how contemporary movies look. But again, that could just be the quality of this boot-leg. We'll see tomorrow.

that was pretty scary to me. That looked way over the top. They had him jump on to a moving car swinging from the whip and had him falling through a windshield, delivering a line, and then kicking the guy out. Speilberg had stated that this film was just for the fans, maybe he went over the top with the cheesiness for the fans too.

Yeah, the tone definitely looks more "Crusade" than "Raiders." But that's alright with me...I know there's a lot of Last Crusade hate out there, but it came out when I was six and is therefore the one I grew up with. Sure, seeing the trilogy late in life I accept Raiders as the better movie...but I never won't love the Last Crusade.

That is very true - people don't swing on stuff in action films now. In the angst ridden world of Bourne and the new Bond, the modern action hero cannot take the risk of ending up just a little bit away from the point he actually started from, then a little bit off where he wanted to be, and finally just hanging motionless from a rope. Getting shot.

remember how Kickass,Kewl,Bad Ass, and Sick the trailers were for the prequels? Lucas is the worlds best snake oil salesman...and knows exactly which imagery to put in his teasers, posters, and trailers to get the fanboys wallets loosened up. Sure it looked fun, and it looked very Indy-ish...but I refuse to get excited about anything Lucas touches...if I walk out of the theater with a smile after seeing this..then I'll be the first to say it was good.

Raiders vs. Crusade
by hamster factor
Feb 14th, 2008
02:23:36 AM
If you guys are going to hold this up to Raiders you are going to be very disappointed. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a classic film for all time. Ford, Speilberg and Lucas were all at the height of their creative powers when that movie was made. BUT, Crusade was a damn good and fun flick in it's own right (so was Temple of Doom, haters be damned). If this is on par with Crusade, I will be perfectly happy - AND at least we known that Judeo-Christian myth and Nazis are out this time, so it will be different from Raiders and Crusade no matter what. Looking forward to May 22!

I had no hope for this film (didn't like #3 either), but this looks far worse than I expected. In fact, I can't believe anybody thinks this looks good. It looks as fake as Sky Captain. Ford looks like he could keel over at any second, then he's flying around like Spidey and crashing through windshield like they're made of paper. Was thing shot on HD, cause it looks like it. Also looks like it's completely greenscreen. Wow. Words can't describe how bad it is. Guess it doesn't matter, since fanboys don't care about quality.

Some people sure are dramatic. Glad you can tell all that from a bootlegged thumbnail of a video. Are you sure it doesn't look like sky captain to you because it's set in the 50s? I didn't see any giant robots or flying fortresses anywhere. You might be a little confused. And to the guy that said it had shitty dialog: from the half dozen lines that actually appeared in the trailer, it sounded like stuff straight out of any of the other Indy movies, and Ford still sounds like freaking Indiana Jones.

Spielberg said: "I'd do anything for George and if George asked me to shoot "Indiana Jones 4" on digital, I'd do it. But my duties will always be to shoot on film... I love shooting on film and I love editing on film. I know that digital will do the same thing film will do. It will still use lenses. It will still capture the same images." "The difference is that digital is like acrylic paint. It's so photo-realistic that you don't see any flaws. With traditional film, where you have it going through shutters in a film gate, it's alive with grain -- compared to digital; it's like an impressionist painting. I would still rather see a still life painted by an impressionist than a still life painted by Norman Rockwell."

That is the official quote in magazines and interviews, yes. Hearing the rumblings and talk first hand wasn't so...diplomatic. You have to remember that Spielberg and Lucas are great friends - but Spielberg is a 'film' diehard through and through. Hence the Technicolor anecdote.

Whatever they are, they're not U.S. soldiers 'cause Indy's clearly kicking their asses! So there! Put that in your hat and whip it! Whip it good!

Perhaps nostalgia is what we are craving right now. There's nothing like warming up to an old friend in the theaters. Now with the prequels, it was like warming up to an old friend, and finding out he was a pedophile. This will not happen with Indy. Have faith. The penitent man will pass!

I love Temple of Doom. Flawed? Sure. Awesome? You bet your ass. The music is some of my favorite John Williams - Parade of the Slave Children - amazing. The moment that gives me chills every single time I watch it is when Indy punches the guard after going to release the kids. The guard slides like 10 feet and the camera slowly dollies into Indy, who is just standing there with the most badass expression on his face. He's PISSED. My god I love that scene!

couldn't agree more about the music, freaking classic. The movie just kicks ass in general - the fucking bridge scene!! come on guys! "Prepare to me Kali, in Hell!". Indy was just freaking bad ass and dark in this movie. Temple of Doom was the first Indy I saw - I was like the kid in "Son or Rambow" for that movie - dressing up as Indy, reenacting it etc. It wasn't until later that I saw Raiders on video and of course Crusade when it hit theaters. When I got older I came to realize that Raiders was the far superior film, but I will never deny the awesomeness of Temple of Doom, despite the obvious flaws I now recognize.

they should have stuck with John Williams music at the beginning - The Map Room, or something of the like - instead of Brian Tyler's Children of Dune music. I really like Tyler's music, but it's Indiana Jones for christ's sake, talk about a catalog of incredible music to choose from. I don't understand why they did that. I honestly was thinking 'National Treasure' at the beginning (despite the Indy footage) just because that was the vibe the music and text gave. For the record, I haven't seen either 'National Treasure' films - but I can damn well assure you they wouldn't exist without Indy.

Yes, that was Temple of Doom as well. That, the Thugee March and the bridge scene, Indy vs. Mola Ram about to fall into a river of gators with the Sankara stones burning through the pack? First of all, it looks completely amazing, though probably an inordinate amout of FX for a teaser. They're basically showing off ILM's skills for all those stupid kids who expect it. Unfortunately, Spielberg & Lucas need THEM to see the movie too. I'm sure the special effects will fit into the final cut seamlessly. But that punch had me worried. I really hope that the audio isn't locked. That sound effect sucked. When Indy punches somebody in the face, it's like a frigging bomb going off. This one sounded almost realistic! by EvilGeek1
Feb 14th, 2008

There is certainly plenty of it there, but then again there was a fair amount of the traditional FX in the prequels. Everything from cell-painting to stop-motion was used. Plus from what spoilers I've read, the story seems grander so They're going to need computer effects to tell this story. But I honestly thought the CGI looked fine (and I'm a nuisance for picking it out). And I agree with the other TB'ers when they say that a trailer can be misleading. But refresh yourselves with what Dr. Jones has faced in the past and look at this trailer. Then tell me they've lost sight of Indiana Jones. Because I think they've still got it!

It's not incredibly uncommon for a director to write a scriptment for a movie and then the actual writers will make a screenplay out of it. Someone who isn't a member of the WGA still is allowed to do things you know. He isn't a scab.

...As a kid. Especially Temple. I was too old for Crusades...I think I was 8 or so at the time, but even at that age, Crusade was flat and charmless. The problem for me is that I outgrew Indie. I didn't retain my enjoyment of it the same way I did Star Wars or other 80's kids flicks. Come to think of it, I never enjoyed any of Spielbergs films as a kid. It wasn't till I was much older that I appreciated them. Strange.I did love the stuff he produced though, like Goonies and Gremlins.

@Jarv Nice quote by-the-way. I'm just asking for a bit of levity, that's all. George and Steven deserve a little respect, especially in light of Mr Spielberg's decision to pull out of the Olympic Commitee because of China's policies in Dafur. Saying 'F' this and that to them is not cool. Too many on here have an unrealsitc sense of entitlement, it comes from your parent's and whatnot telling too many of you how 'special' you are. Well, most of you are not 'special', atleast, not special in the way your parent's meant ;-p

I haven't thrown any stones at this movie. I can't wait to see it. AICN talkback has the reputation of being one of the most venomous and toxic movie discussion forums on the net - I rarely participate here except when I have to come out and defend something I care about - like Indiana Jones. I would encourage you and anyone else not to take anything said here too seriously, and it worries me that film makers and studios actually seem to pay attention to talkbackers at times (like the Lucas quote from Vanity Fair where he said "everyone already hates Indy 4" - HUH?? no one I've corresponded with in "real life" has been anything but excited and curious about it) - giving any mind to anonymous assholes posting random shit in an attempt to provoke response and get attention is very dangerous territory indeed. Having said that: the prequels sucked balls, and you didn't have to read AICN to find that opinion.

Anyone who thinks that a well-edited trailer indicates that the movie itself is good needs a little reminding: back in 1999, a little trailer got everybody excited with its fast paced visuals and references to a classic film trilogy. And that was the trailer for which movie? The Phantom Menace. Remember: this trailer is probably NOT edited by the same people who made the actual movie. There are companies who SPECIALISE in producing trailers. They are experts in making SHIT look like GOLD. They do this by taking the most EXCITING shots in the movie and stitching them together in a quickfire editing style: it gives the impression that the whole movie is of the same standard. For example, that exchange: "You're a teacher?" - "Part time" is almost certainly the BEST joke in the movie AND NOW IT'S BEEN SPOILED. There will be nothing as good in the actual movie. And the action we've seen may well be THE ONLY action in the movie. It looks increasingly likely that most of the movie will involve the characters trudging around looking for some parts of a spaceship - just like The Phantom Menace.

If the movie's anything like the trailer, I think I'll skip it or at least wait till it comes out of DVD. Indy swinging into a truck and not getting killed? The guy is sixty-five years old! Come on, give me a break. Not to mention all those silly scenes of Cate Blanchett screaming in Russian and the fake-looking CGI car chase. Is she going to be the evil, black-haired Willie Scott? The only good scene in the whole thing was when Indy picks up his hat and his shadow is reflected in the army car.

Look, I love the first three Indy movies a lot. But this one just looks like a cynical cash-in to get more money out of our collective nostalgia. And to add insult to injury, they didn't even credit Frank Darabont as co-writer. I hope the movie is better than the trailer. I really do. But after this, I'm not getting my hopes up.

All you have to do is connect a film somehow with The Phantom Menace and then claim it sucks. The Godfather was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who was a part of the new wave of directors in the 70's just like George Lucas. The two of them were even friends. George Lucas made The Phantom Menace which was a crappy film (but had an exciting trailer). Hence, The Godfather sucks!

07:22:26 AM
Now, I love all 3 movies but when did it become common knowledge that Crusade is the 'weak" Indy movie? I always thought common consensu was that Doom was the weakest? I might have that impression because personally the second is the weakest in my eyes(not all of it, but Short Round was a BIT much)but I'm not sure why people are worried if Indy 4 turns out like Crusade. I thought Crusade was almost as much fun as the first. But that initial movie is so far above most everything else, that it probably isnt fair trying to make sure they all measure up to Raiders. Like I said, I personally think Doom was the weakest, but if Indy 4 is as good as that one, then Ill be extremely happy.

Now as far as the Indiana Jones movies are concerned, nothing will come close to "Raiders", although we can hope that this one will. or be doomed to repeat them. When you've gotten over your excitement, just STOP and THINK. I looked in the dictionary and you know what the definition for 'Fanboy' was? "Fanboy: an individual who shuts off his brain and allows a trailer to do his thinking for him." A trailer is a specific product. It is DESIGNED to EXCITE and TEASE. And yes, that goes for all movies. They do this by careful selection of footage. Remember: you have seen LESS THAN 2 MINUTES of actual footage! It isn't representative of the movie! It IS representative of a MARKETING TECHNIQUE. Using footage from the 'Crystal Skull' movie, you could JUST AS EASILY make a trailer than makes the movie look like IT SUCKS CRYSTAL BALLS. The production of a trailer is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUSINESS to the production of a movie. The problem is that fanboys are CONFUSING THE TWO! So, yes, give the trailer-makers an award for their editing. But don't hand them your brains at the same time, for the love of God. And now for some statistics: Percentage of talkbackers who were excited at the first Crystal Skull trailer: 95% . Percentage of talkbackers who saw the movie and realised it wasn't nearly as exciting as the trailer implied: 99% . Percentage of talkbackers who saw the trailer for what it was and did not bother to see the movie, but rented out 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark Instead': One person: Merriman Lyon.

I'll give you a brief summary why Doom is better than Crusade which most have already stated:

Crusade is pretty much a carbon copy of Raiders with Sallah, Marcus, Nazis, etc., and its far too jokey and slapstick merely intended as a final chapter to a trilogy to give a nice tidy ending where they can ride off into the sunset. No matter what anyone says about Doom in terms of criticism, at least it was 100% original, and 25 years later there are still no movies anywhere near similar to Doom. It was dark, and had some of the best action scenes ever made, and the rope bridge scene is still one of the greatest movie climaxes of all time.

Fuck yes.

Crusade is by far the weakest, a shallow imitation of Raiders. The serious characters of Sallah and especially Brody are turned into joky, idiotic sidekicks. Allison Doody is awful. The whole thing is unimaginatively shot and there is an overall feeling of blandness. The boat chase is monumentally unexciting and the ILM SFX for the most part are pretty woeful, mainly due to Dennis Muren not being onboard. Indiana ends up being a stooge to Sean Connery's lame schtick. There's still some great stuff in it, the Phoenix opening, the desert chase, but overall it's by far the weakest of the three. IMO of course.

...that maybe Jones and the Russians are in the warehouse because:

1) The Soviets forced him to try to help them find the Ark (even though he doesn't know where or how to find it).

2) Indy lies at some point about knowing where the Ark is in order to buy time and somehow fuck the Soviets over while in the warehouse?

I'm not so sure the Ark shows up at all.

I wanted to enjoy the trailer. I really did. But what I saw didn't impress me one damn bit. If anything, it depressed me.

Even if there's no profit motive involved--which may very well be (Speilberg and co. might be doing it for love)--I thought the trailer looked terrible. And all the passion in the world won't change that. As Frank Gilroy once wrote, "Passion ain't enough."

About that Phantom Menace trailer...
by Jonah Echo
Feb 14th, 2008
07:59:42 AM
Back then, we were all a bit naive, in that we didn't even think about the fact Episode 1 might be terrible. Sci-fi was schluffing along miserably at that point, and even the really good stuff like Dark City wasnt being seen by anybody. The summer before Menace, the most satisfying sci-fi film we had was X-Files and it wasn't groundbreaking and just an extension of the show. So, then the prequel teaser shows up, and I think that first teaser was prior to Wing Commander(didnt WC get the longer, actual trailer?)because I recall seeing Prince of Egypt and the teaser with the gungans emerging from the mist being in front of that. And my reaction then was, "awesome" but even at that early point I remember recognizing the lack of expression on Yoda, and that was the first time I even considered that it might not live up to it's potential. Go back and what that first teaser, and later trailer and they aren't really marketing a different movie, its just that we were allowed to operate off of pure blind hype. Also, that trailer worked most of its magic from the music, and the world we saw didnt look like that of the original films. However, Indiana Jones looks like a part of the originals and it helps that this actually brings back some of the same actors and style. I think if you sit both trailers next to each other, this one clearly looks like the better movie even without the knowledge of how each would turn out.

Of course it applies to other trailers. OF COURSE it does. The art of trailer-making (which is a different art to filmmaking) has developed to such a degree over the last twenty years that nowadays, NO action movie can possibly hope to live up to its own trailer. It pains me to have to explain this to (apparently) intelligent people - but it UPSETS me when intelligent people HAND OVER THEIR BRAINS AND MONEY to a MARKETING CAMPAIGN. So now let's look at some FACTS: 1. You have seen about a minute and a half of footage, designed by the best experts in the business to get you excited. Yes, it's fun - but it's NOT the movie. 2. The MOVIE itself (not the trailer - the MOVIE) has been made by three people who were at their best THIRTY years ago. The magic is long gone and they have proved this over and over again. 3. The basic premise of the movie was cooked up by George Lucas - Spielberg and Ford HATED it for years and refused to have anything to do with it. Now HATE is a strong word. The story must REALLY suck. 4. George Lucas came up with the story. George Lucas? Do I need to remind people? Do I REALLY need to write twenty pages explaining why this is wrong? 5. Spielberg and Ford were ready to shoot the Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption) script. Now THAT I would like to see. But Lucas rejected it so we get the Crystal Skull instead. 6. Like the Star Wars prequels, Lucas is continuing the franchise by introducing a 'family' element: Shia leBoeuf being Indy's son and Marion Ravenwood being Shia's mom. Just like the Brady Bunch. Aw, that's sweet. Hope they put in an adorable and comic housekeeper and some canned laughter too. 7. The history of resussitated franchises isn't exactly inspiring. I'd say there's a hit rate of one in twenty managing to come up to the level of the original. Lucas' invovlvement in this area needs no comment from me. 7. Lucas is involved. That's George Lucas, permanent nominee at the Razzie awards. And no, he doesn't care what you think.

KATE CAPSHAW. Shrill, annoying, no redeeming qualities in that movie. The opening scene was too slapsticky, like much of Crusade, which I still love. Crusade is a bit of a retread, but the Grail is a worthy quest for Indy, unlike the ambiguous stones in TOD, and the tests at the end of Crusade are awesome. Seeing Indy go bad in TOD was awesome though. And the end on the bridge, of course.

Yeah, it's not the clothing it's the caps they're wearing.

Actually, when I first caught a glimpse of the caps my first thought was Indy was getting arrested/whatever by the French until I focused on the rest of the clothing.

While the caps ARE similar to US Army issue they appear to have taken some liberty with the styling to evoke a Nazi look to them.

It's just that if you're going to have a villian in the 50's then it's GOT to be "dem damn Reds©" like we HAVE been hearing on AICN. Don't do that whole "the US is as evil and corrupt as the Soviets." That's just inaccurate and silly.

Still, maybe I'm just talking out of my ass.

The Shankara Stones are a familier trope throughout the Ages. The meteor that was heading to Earth in Armageddon was a Shankara Stone. The stone used the the prophet David to slay Goliath was a Shankara Stone. The rock that killed Piggy in Lord of the Flies was in fact a Shankara Stone. Hell Chuck Norris' ball are made of Shankara Stone. So in response to those claiming the TOD was not a worthy adventure for Indy, I would politely disagree....
