The more I say this the more exciting and more stupid it sounds. I kinda move in both directions on it if you know what I mean... But when you wrote "if this rumor is true, this is awesome, awesome, awesome." I was thinking you know, big! Al Pacino would be... well the old guy's got a bit predictable in his old age. Great actor still but I was like... MEH. BUT YOU KNOW WHO'D RIP THIS REBOOT A NEW ARSEHOLE? Imagine if SEAN CONNERY came out of retirement and this time instead of playing the character he made famous played the ARCH VILLAN?!!!!!! It'd be like the Alpha and the Omega. It'd be so amazing to see him be ruthless. Not that it's going to happen. El Stupido

That would be so fucking lame and contrived. It would be almost as gay as when they remake an old TV show and they have the original actor play the new actor's dad.

Now Brosnan...that would be lame too but at least there'd be an element of him getting revenge for being fired after saving the franchise.

Just like Jonathan Pryce. Who cares if these fuckers can act? They simply bring too much baggage (of the public conscience kind) to a role that should be played by a fairly nameless actor with great foreign market appeal. Why do I have to tell EON how to do their job? Right, because they are dinks. No Pacino!

I thought that was the kind of ham-fisted, overacting we were trying to get away from with these films. It has been awhile since Pacino turned in a performance that wasn't a poor imitation of his past achievements. I agree with cowboyone that someone like Daniel Day Lewis would be exciting but Pacino scares me. 15 or 20 years ago this might have been awesome but I know people who have worked with him who say he is a step away from being a crazy, smelly homeless person so he can stay away from the Bond films.

Yes, Pachino is a "god", but in the last few years, he's become a characture figure.. He plays himself, chewing up scenery almost as bad as Connery does (dog!). He would be distracting and no where near as menacing as he should be.. Lazenby would be cool, if he still has any acting chops, but Connery would be purely stunt casting for the sake of stunt casting. How about Paul Newman? seriously... Even though he's 150, he still commands a presence on screen...

I love Al Pacino, a lot, but I hope this is all bullshit b/c that would be terrible. Its not that Pacino is no good or cant bring the goods anymore, but hes all wrong for something like this (unless we actually never SEE him. Not like a "Number 1" kind of thing, but you get the idea) Having some big star would be out of place enough, but especially with Pacino it would take you right out of the movie and we'd lose that suspension of disbelief instantly. Itd take the believability of the movie right out, just wouldnt work. Al worked in say Oceans 13 b/c it was that sort of over the top universe where a character like that would work. I'd love to see Pacino have some great mind blowing work come out that reminds us why hes the man, but all we get now is Pacino doing his best Pacino. I think this would be a step back for the Bond franchise and the great feel for the movies theyve got now. Pacino has been and can be imposing, furious, scary and so on but he doesnt belong in this world. Daniel Day Lewis would be genius but I digress. I'm not an Al basher, I'd watch a 3rd Garfield movie if he was in it, but Bond needs to avoid him.

Al would be great for a short Cameo. Come on, you know you’ll dig it. He could be ‘tied’ to a BIGGER Bond Villain such as: Auric Goldfinger ( James Gandolfini ), General Orlov – Octopussy (Viggo Mortensen), Scaramange - Man With the Golden Gun (Denzel Washington), Dr. No (Chow Yun Fat), Ernst Stavro Blofeld – You Only Live Twice (Tobin Bell) Felix (Dwyane Johnson), ‘M’ (Nina Hartley) Yes, THAT ‘Nina’. With a British Accent, Lowkey Approach, “I’m YOUR Friggn’ Boss./Dominatrix in the background/Don’t Fuck with Me” minimalist attitude, she would def be the ‘M’ not to mess with. Just think about it before you get in a twist.) These characters are ‘over the top’ and have the attitude to keep Bond jumping as well as be memorable and bigger than life. Ca’mon… you know these choices would be cool. We’ll not as cool as me, but it worked for my Father, so that’s the way we do it. Any problems that you may have with the above casting should be directed to my ‘Complaint Department’ Division Head: Iron Man. Have a good day. Peace. -Stark

Brosnan would have been inspired, but you know - snowballs in hell and all that. Mads Mikkelsen was actually pretty great in CR...Amalric looks good too, he's got that weird Polanski vibe. And though I loved Le Chiffre's basically reserved nature, I'd would like to see another CRAZY Bond villain. Amalric looks like he could do that.

let's face it, Pacino is slumming it these days (anyone actually get all the way through 88 minutes and declare it a classic?) and could do with a decent job. if it is a sensible, realistic villain that requires acting, nice one. if it is more OTT shit, then Pacino is just going to shout a very great deal. as for Simon le Bon, i agree with getting decent themes again - You Know My Name was OK, but the last really decent ones that you can still play today are View To A Kill and a-ha's Living Daylights.

...known as "becoming a 'caricature' of yourself". This is Pacino through and through. Hearing he's on a project no longer rings as a good thing to me. I still think Pacino's last amazing work was in "Heat" tho I'm sure others would disagree. Bringing him on board this movie would be like having him portray himself in the movie...a HUGE distraction (I cannot see Pacino and not think "Hey, it's Al Pacino" no matter what he's in now). Plus, as mentioned above, the screaming dialogue is way played out and I don't think his ego would allow full-on direction to get him out of his typical "Alpacino" mode. I didn't see him in O13 but I'd think that movie was a perfect vehicle for him (ensemble situational comedy)...not the multi-decade legacy of James Bond. Christopher Lee would kick ass tho he might be a bit too iconic presently for a bad guy (come on people, Saruman and Dooku and now another bad guy...arguably all in a row? He could do it supreme justice of course...but the poor guy needs a break from the arch-villain thing!). Not to mention, all "main bad guy" casting aside, doesn't this "new" Bond seem to be not in the same world as the "Giant hidden fortress secret underwater base, evil bad-guy bent on taking over/destroying/enslaving the world? Isn't that more the "Kenny G" James Bond ala Roger Moore (read: popcorn-y and unrealistic) versus "Coltrane" James Bond with Daniel Craig? (as in highly realistic and not at all popcorn-y even with big action?). Maybe it's just me.

From the Desk of Tony Stark: by Stark Industries Feb 13th, 2008 Al would be great for a short Cameo. Peace. -Stark

This isn't the best news, in my opinion. Al Pacino has made many great films in his time, but he's slumming lately, becoming a charicature of himself. I already know the exact expression, exact delivery, and exact posture he'll use to look threatening if this casting news is true. Seems hugely anti-climactic.

I'd rather see the lesser-known Anatole Taubman as Bond's nemesis. However, that's probably me being disingenuous. Here's hoping Marc Forster found something weird and distinctive for Pacino to latch on to as a Bond character.

The Bond franchise does not need Al "Hoohaa!" Pacino. Otherwise, it just becomes a vehicle for the actor do do a Hoohaa wacky performance. There's a real possibility that we could be getting a Pacino as Blofeld. The Austin Powers films proved that the character was a joke. I highly doubt(assuming that he IS actually playing Blofeld)that the star power of Pacino is going to help much in that matter. Could this soon lead to Pacino as Cobra Commander in GI JOE? COBRAAAA! Pacino is an overrated blowhard. Then again, that might work for a Bond villain, if this were ten years ago and Bond was all about being tongue-in-cheek and larger-than-life and all that shit. I like the idea of the Bond villains always being these awesome actors from various parts of the world who don't have any recognition factor for North American audiences. If it has to be an American, it shouldn't be anyone any bigger than -- say -- Phillip Baker Hall. Better yet, get one of those clever Brits, with their tricky accent switching powers, like Tom Wilkinson. Al Pacino is just Al Pacino. I don't give a shit about fucking mega movie stars. Of course, I'm probably ranting on a bullshit story anyway, so...um...as you were...

This kind of shit is all Al Pacino does these days. Pops up and plays Al Pacino so we can all go "OMIGOD IT'S AL PACINO IN SOME ROLE I DIDN'T EXPECT TO SEE HIM IN PLAYING THE SAME FUCKING CHARACTER HE ALWAYS PLAYS." Screw that. I think the big bad guy should be a CGI-version of 1960s Sean Connery who proceeds to lay out his plan to kill Bond and take his place. He then turns to the camera and says, in his thick Scottish accent, "That's right, in Dr. No, in From Russia with Love, in Goldfinger, in Thunderball... I was evil. How's that for a mindfuck?"

If true, it's utterly depressing. Pacino has perfected the art of speaking his lines, every line, loudly. This is supposed to add gravitas and menace to his characters. Now, if he could re-learn speaking softly, as he did in Godfather 2, well, perhaps I could believe again.

I agree 100% with everyone who thins this isn't good news. As others have pointed out, he hasn't really "acted" in a movie in a long time and since he's so well known I think he'd only take people out of the movie. The only way I'd be for this is if they can get him to tone down his schtick and actually act.

"all he does is play Al Pacino"....wtf - Angels in America and Merchant of Venice were only 4 years ago and were as good a back to back one-two punch as anyone has done in film in recent memory. You people are simply not worthy. Heck even in O13 he was a terrific, witty (and quite sly) addition to the ensemble. Yeah, he does crap but he rarely sucks in anything, he doesn't coast (he's working hard to entertain YOU dammit) - and here's the kicker : he's been flat out great at LEAST 6 times in the last 10 years (Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Chinese Coffee, Insomnia, and the aforementioned AiA, MOV); any other American actor in his age group got 6 great performances in the last 10 years? Yeah, exactly....

No Mr Bond, I EXPECT YOU TO DIE!

I don't know what to think. He made perfectly clear in recent interviews that he doesn't give a shit about blockbusters: he just takes the money , laughs all the way to the bank and comes home reading scripts for smaller, better flicks (when he's in the mood of shooting one).

I sure hope it's just a cameo, so people will get used to the idea (not unlike Sam Jackson in Iron Man) and give him a decent part in Bond 23. At least it gives them 2 more years to write him a decent baddie part, and not a VIP cameo.

seriously tho - I see no reason to jump from "Al Pacino is doing a cameo" to "Al Pacino is the new Bond Villain" so easily...

To me cameo says some section chief type who fails and gets executed spectacularly. Not THE fucking MAN. Or maybe Felix Leiter's CIA chief doing the whole shouting at his subordinates bit - now THAT I can see Pacino doing a cameo more than the Big Cheese...

Really there are so many different ways this could be interpreted - and didn't this very site already confirm it was Almaric?

Just to throw this out there, you know who I think would make an excellent Bond Villain that everyone would LOVE to HATE? OK now your initial reaction to this might be a little adverse, but just let it settle in for a moment and then see how you feel about it - Tom Cruise

Christopher Nolan Theory

Feb 14th, 2008
03:37:14 AM
How's this: They make a Bond movie approx. every 2 years (that's the plan anyway. You could say the same about Nolan's Batman trilogy. So Nolan should be coming out of Batman 3 around the time Bond 23 goes into production. Nolan's already said he'd love to do a Bond movie one day and Eon would bend over backwards to get him. Well, the last good performance that Pacino put in was on the Nolan film, Insomnia. It was an understated turn - grizzled, dark and internal - showed that the guy's still got it in him with the right script and direction (just like DeNiro). Makes sense that Pacino would be tempted in if he thought he might get to work with Nolan again. And makes sense that Eon would trust Nolan to get a less derivated 'Sent of a Woman' performance out of Pacino. If they pair Pacino with the wrong set of hands we'll end up with a character indistinguishable from 'John Milton' in dull as dish-water 'Devil's Advocate'. With Haggis' Advocacy steering the franchise they wouldn't let this happen... would they?

There is no "bad" period Pacino - he consistently gives great performances every year or 2 (although his last one is 2004 with Merchant of Venice, let's see what he does in 2007)......By the way his self financed "Salomaybe" looks pretty damn daring and exciting too and that's due out in 2007.....you see any other American actor doing anything like "Salomaybe"? If you're going to bust his chops for taking crap like "88 Minutes" and "two For the Money", you have to give the props when he does Shakespeare and Wilde on film too yanno? I'd really suggest some people go rent the Al Pacino : An Actor's Vision dvd set - 3 films Pacino financed with his own money "Local Stigmatic", "Chinese Coffee", "Looking For Richard".....all great pieces of acting - all from different stages of his career.

I was hoping the character itself was going to be BLOFELD and the criminal organisation was going to be revealed to be SPECTRE. Unlikely I know given the stalemate over the rights but I really would've liked to have seen a modern retelling of Bond going against SPECTRE.

... I think it'd be a great move. I can see him as Blofeld but not the cartoon figure from previous films, harder and real and I think that's why (if it's true that is) Pacino got a call. He would be truly scary as a Bond villain, the ultimate in fact. Another smart move by the producers I think. Can't wait to see it, silly title or no.

...Quantum of Solace is a fucking bad ass Bond title? I remember reading a test review of the last Brosnan Bond where in the focus group they were sking people the titles they liked, "Tomorrow Never Dies", "Death is Not your Ballsack", whatever the fuck. And I just thought, how gay that they aer trying to make these bound-sounding titles which are totally unrelated to the plot. Where are the stories so unique that the simply suggest cool names? To me that's what Quantum of Solace is. It's about what makes Bond kind of fucked up, but it also just sounds cool. I am all for the shit.
