Not the tongue in cheek Scream movies or, god forbid, stuff like Cursed and Shocker.

Why remake the Crazies?
by Gwai Lo

Seriously, why? There is no name recognition, besides the handful of Romero fans who will recognize the title and scorn the idea of the remake. I like the Crazies, but the premise isn't exactly unique? It's a zombie film, except rather than zombies its people infected with a government created virus. Sound familiar? So why is this necessary? Just tweak it a bit and call it something else and leave a good film alone. I guess this will line Romero's pockets a bit though, so that's a plus.

Caught a free screening and thought it was fun and well done. According to IMDB, Wes is remaking Shocker right now, which is cool with me. I'd rather people remake movies that got it wrong than movies that got it right. Don't know quite what to think about 25/8.
You sure about that Fastcars?

I mean, are you really asking for remakes of shitty flicks like Driven, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Patriot and Anchorman? They were bad enough the first time around...

I agree about Driven, Gone in 60 seconds but The Patriot was so-so and Anchorman is hilarious! Well, well, I like the title's obvious reference to PI and circle and repeating etc etc. Hope it's good.
I didn't laugh once at Anchorman....

And I was so incredibly freaking stoned when I saw it. I was like Dante in Grandma's Boy (minus the lion). If I don't laugh at a comedy after a helluva lot of rum and Coke, and some Frankenstein, well, maybe it shouldn't be classified as comedy.

And the only remake I really want to see is a Princess Diaries remake, where Anne Hathaway is a student at an all-girls school with Taylor Rain, Lanny Barbie and Charmane Star...

I'm sick of people bagging on Scream

Nobody remembers that at the time Horror was in the doldrums and the first Scream was a genuine breath of fresh air. The fact it was slaughtered by its own sequels and spawned endless inferior rip-offs (I know who you blew last summer leaping to mind) is not its fault. It was a good film at the time and still stands up reasonably well.

Aside from that little rant, any new horror is good. Just stop remaking the classics.

and The Patriot was shit.

We've been seeing less and less of Craven lately. I understand that he's getting older now, but I think the whole "Cursed" fiasco took a lot out of him. Good to see him back, though. I hope this movie is great.

A Nightmare On Elm Street is one of the greatest horror films ever made, Serpent and The Rainbow is ridiculously underseen and The People Under The Stairs is bugfuck insane. Yeah...he's made some clunkers...but every few years or so...he ALWAYS comes back with another smash...

I understand the criticisms, but everyone I know really liked Scream. In addition to being clever and funny... it had great tension and an unpredictable ending. If this new film is anywhere near that quality, it'll be better than any horror movie in the past 10 years.

I dont think its so much that people dislike Scream so much that they dislike what it did to horror. mean, I know when I first saw Sream it was awesome, saw it multiple times. Everyone was talking aobut it. Then came I know What You Did Lastt Summer, Urban Legend, Screwam sequels, and so on and so forth. We were inundated with movies all trying to copy scream so much that I think it just made everyone foret how awesome the first one was and now it seems like its as bad its the rip-offs even though its the film actually being ripped off.

What the fuck? That'd be like getting Lars Von Trier to do Rambo V. They just don't work together! Wasn't Brad Anderson attached to The Crazies at one point? Now THAT would be a formidable remake. Session 9 still scares the crap outta me.

Session 9 was way creepy, all the way to that final line. Anderson is a good director, but I prefer seeing him do original movies. He has a good group of films to his name now, and I look forward to every new project but he is on a roll creatively and more original stuff would be good. As for Craven, I like him but think like Carpenter he became somewhat toothless after the horror films of the 80s died out. I didnt see Cursed,Red Eye, or Scream 3 and I always forget he did Music of the Heart(which was a nice movie, but thats about it). The thing I liked about Wes in the 80s and early 90s is even when his movies clearly missed the mark as "good movies" they were terrific fun as bad movies. C'mon, who doesnt love Swamp Thing?
Signature villian sounds like a menu item

Yes I'd like the studio approved value horror film to go, with a signature villain, a side of ready to dice virgins and one creepy but ultimately helpful elderly person.

...projects today? Holy hell, this sounds DTV. Plus, you know, some dude possibly returning from the grave to kill the kids he wanted to kill before? Kinda like Nightmare On Elm Street? I think I'm gonna go rent Wrestlemaniac to wash the taste of failure out with the taste of colossal failure.

And Scream was a revolutionary film for its time. I do agree, however, that this should be a darker film. Craven made some of his darker films in response to the politics of the time (Last House on the Left, Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare) - and what better time than now to make a really fucked up horror movie?
