...that this is actually the code name for Evil Dead 4. Utter bullshit I'm sure, plus I'd imagine that Campbell would be tied up with season 2 of Burn Notice in the very near future, but it sure would be nice to see the Raimi/Campbell combo revisit the Dead films once more at some point down the line. Regardless I hope this is a return to form for Raimi, I'm no Spider-Man hater (despite the crappy last film), but the last Raimi film I out and out loved was A Simple Plan. After that he just seemed to lose it somewhere, so hope this film means he's finally got his mojo back. We'll see.

I'm terrified someone's going to 'Nolanize' Spidey. I still can't make a lick of sense out of the final action sequence of Batman Begins. At least the Burton and Schumacher installments occasionally had high spirit (if you ignore Batman and Robin). Any future director who wants to puts together a good action sequence should watch Three Kings and Children of Men first.

I'm not all that taken with Page but so many other people seem to be so this is a real coup for Raimi's return to horror. As for Raimi's style taking a backseat of late, I think that's been a smart move for him - to use it sparingly, not continue to make it the center of his films. I think he took his style as far as he could - or should - in Quick and the Dead and dialing it back with A Simple Plan proved a wise move. Raimi's Spidey films were the movies he was born to make - a perfect marriage of the visual stylization of his early films and the dramatic progress with actors that he had made with films like Simple Plan, The Gift and For the Love of the Game (whether you liked that film or not, it once again proved that Raimi could work outside his familiar zone). Raimi set the standard for Spider-Man on screen - it'll be hard for anyone following in his shoes to do as much justice to the comic. Please, no 'Nolanized' Spider-Man films for me. Looking forward to Dark Knight but the same approach to Spider-Man would be totally wrong.

People keep on complaining about "emo" Parker but do they realize it was a joke? I mean, it was supposed to be funny. It's camp, a kind of humor usually found in comic books and thus in a movie based on a comic book. If you don't like camp, fine, but you really have no business watching a superhero film (all three Spiderman films had their share of camp, the first film being the one who handled it the clumsiest). Anyway, what I'm trying to say is get a sense of humor.

Oh, and I disagree about Raimi dialing back his style for Spiderman. Go back and watch those action sequences and you can see him clearly using his crazy ass zooming camera. Just because his style isn't old school horror, doesn't mean it wasn't pure Raimi.

I've wanted to see that in a live action movie ever since I watched one of a few hundred anime hentai movies. I think this would be perfect here as Page's character is caught somewhere in Hell and has her clothes torn off by snake size dicks that proceed to penetrate her every orifice. That would be DOPE!!!!!

Unfortunately that would also require a XXX rating and I don't think Ms. Page would be into it. That's something I'd like to see, though, an A-List star that does a porno to shock everyone which would (in this society) guarantee a much bigger star and a higher paycheck due to the shock value plus would be the BEST selling porn title ever. Any semi-famous or A-list actresses reading this? Don't you want it? Don't you want it?!! Don't you WANT IT?!?! DON'T YOU WANT IT?!?!!!! - ARRF!!

The first two Spider-Man films were great and a lot of fun. The third... not so much. But Spider-Man doesn't need to be "Nolanized." He's a much lighter character (though with plenty of angst of course) than Batman, which Raimi captured well. Spider-Man doesn't need a super moody, "realistic" movie. He just needs one better than Spider-Man 3. But Spider-Man 3 being bad means the dude made a bad movie, not that he's sucked for years and years or that his entire take on Spider-Man was wrong from the start. Might I also add... I love you Ellen Page.

#3 would have been SO f'n unbelieveable if Raimi wasn't forced to include Venom. Imagine being nearly halfway finished shooting your movie, then have some idiot who has power over the property (I'm lookin at YOU Avi Arad, ya prick), come and tell you that you have to include a character that you swore you'd never use, or you're going to be replaced by someone who will.

Imagine what #3 would have been like with the Vulture. Imagine the Conner/Lizard arc finally taking place. Imagine what could have been if not for meddling fools.

I'm done my rant about Avi (coughprickcough)Arad now. Apologies.

Ellen Page is smarmy, and is, IMHO, what is wrong with so many (but not all) young girls today. SO... It's cool to be a bitch? OK. Just remember that people are eventually going to treat you like a bitch when that charming novelty wears out.

Jeebus, what was in my coffee this morning?

That said, I think she would be brilliant in a Sam Raimi horror. Just for the fact that she is a little firecracker that can spout profanities and wit, much like Bruce Campbell. I just hope that she can handle the action scenes like BC can.

Talk about a film that relied totally on circumstance and coincidence to have more than a few of its major scenes rely on in order to fully develop. There just happens to be a hole in a science lab 'exactly' where Sandman is running...the alien goo just happens to land next to Peter and Mary Jane...Eddie Brock just happens to be in the church underneath Parker when he's tearing off the suit...this was a major let down when compared to the superior part II. I also don't think the campy nature of the film (while only in parts) was intentional, given the fact that it would have totally separated it from the themes developed in the previous two installments (which it did). Spider-Man's story was complete at the end of the second, so they naturally just had to add a little nonsensical conflict to keep the story running. It was like finishing "Saving Private Ryan" only to have an old German Nazi return to the Capt. Miller's gravesite and start shooting at the old Private Ryan in order to 'finish some old work.' Just unnecessary.

Feb 10th, 2008

I agree it wasn't as good as the first two, I'd even agree that it was clear that Raimi's heart wasn't fully in it (probably because he wanted to use the Vulture, and was instead forced to use Venom who is really nothing more than a cool design with no discernible character), but it was still an entertaining movie. I liked it, though I admit it wasn't nearly as good as the first two which are genre-defining classics at this point.

I simply do not understand the hate for Spiderman 3. Sure, you don't have to like it (I didn't, particularly), but it's not *terrible*, especially compared to other garbage that comes out. I mean, what's the big deal about Peter Parker looking greasy and dancing when he is supposed to be an unlikeable jerk? Or with all the "coincidences" that drive the plot? It's based on a comic book series, for chrissakes, and there's a good reason people treat comic books like cocoa puffs (a rare, guilty pleasure for adults, or something for kids): they are full of fantastic, unbelievable and often poorly-plotted events.

None of which is to say that you *have* to enjoy spiderman. But hysterical questions like "can anything undo the damage of Spidey 3" are something I find baffling. So maybe people expected an A, but Raimi delivered a B (or even a C), so now those same people are giving Spiderman 3 (and increasingly the whole spiderman series, and even, bizarrely, Raimi himself) an F-.

Weird.

by Forsakyn
Feb 10th, 2008
05:45:40 PM
I'll definitely see this since Raimi's directing it - I can't imagine it'll be as bad as the crap his production house has put out. I'm mixed on Ellen Page - she always plays the "very smart for her age" roles, and I actually wanted her to die at the end of Hard Candy. Kitty Pryde was probably her least annoying role. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out, though. Prior to Spiderman none of Raimi's films (to my knowledge) were mainstream. I love Evil Dead 2 - don't get me wrong - and I enjoyed Darkman - but I have trouble seeing him doing a mainstream horror film. The casting of Ellen Page seems to be a move to try to get a bigger audience (and it'll probably help some). I'll definitely watch it, though.

I haven't been on a studio junket - since the Cannes junket the Cannes before FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING came out. And the only come on my face was from seeing Gandalf face down the Balrog 7 months before it was released - and my spontaneous ejaculation which impregnated my face with one helluva grin!

you didn't like his latest movie. I really enjoyed Spidey 3, but even if you hated it, that doesn't mean you have to automatically hate the director. People who say Raimi sucks just because of Spidey 3 reveal more about their lives than Sam Raimi's art.

Sam Raimi got his: Spider-Man 3.

I now expect a return to decent filmmaking without emo poses, song-and-dance numbers, pointless plotlines and bad art direction.

you mentioned happen to be drop dead gorgeous. Berry, Jolie and Theron are f'ing hot! Juno? Not so much. I"m telling you, she's another Thora Birch. Just like in Ghost World, only Scarlett's career took off and Thora? Not so much. Why is that? Go back to the hot piece of ass theory.

She is manish and looks like the girl from Napoleon Dynamite back when she was in movies like Corrina, Corrina, Andre The Giant, and Best Kevin Costner movie ever. She makes me hope that ever pregnant teenager gets thrown down a set of stairs, which would have been a much better ending to Juno, AK. (Someone should have done that to Diablo Codies lesbian mother after her turkey baster conception).

If you didn't like Evil Dead just don't bother with Sam Raimi movies. Evil Dead is always going to be his highpoint, so if his best isn't for you don't bother. As for me though, loved Evil Dead, loved Spider Man 1 and 2, and developed the same crush on Ellen Page any self respecting nerd did after Juno. Will see.

Gotta love the Alicia Witt love. Who can resist that pouty mouth of hers? Dunno was right - she would have made a much better Mary Jane, better than either Dunst or Howard.

...yes indeed...firey red...beautiful...good actress...and a classically trained pianist. Not kidding...check it out (she did a movie where she portrays a concert pianist teenager going thru teenager things while trying to get accepted at Juliard or something similar...it's actually her playing too!).

Evil Dead 2 was the peak of Raimi's fun filmmaking. AOD had it's moments, but overall, Evil Dead 2 is one of the most joyous guilty pleasures in film history. Funny, Scarry, and a helluva ride. We saw flashes of Sam's inventive camera work in Darkman and some others, but ultimately, after AOD, I wouldn't be looking forward to an Evil Dead 4...unless on the off chance that they may actually take it from the original end of AOD. At least that would show some Balls. Can't bitch about his job with the Spidey Flix though. S3 was so so, but still a damned solid franchise...I'm just thinking the Evil Dead 2 Sam was really probably more of a lightening strike than a trend.

those comments creeped me out. Then, they reminded me of that episode of the Larry Sanders Show, Phil's Gay Jokes Go Too Far, where Phil the head writer is struggling with his sexuality before "making amends" with whatever Scott Thompson's character was called.

She was pretty damn good in that one. Story went a bit south in the end but that wasn't her fault. And I love that most of you think she IS the Juno character. What are you basing this on? The 10 seconds you remember from X3? Geez man. Maybe it's good that my posts generally get ignored. I wouldn't want to incur the wrath of the TBs!

Shaped like an 'H'? That's a great putdown, but it's not like she's 30 and has filled out! Jesus!

not just 'cause she's "flamin'" but because I'll always have the strong memory of her in Dune when I saw it as a kid (and she was a kid) shrieking "He IS the Kwisatz Haderach!" Creepy child!
