4 MONTHS is a queasy, harrowing experience, but in the end it has the same problem as 21 GRAMS. It commits the arthouse fallacy that suffering equals character. THE LIVES OF OTHERS, for example, leavened the misery of its characters with dollops of humor and grace. But 4 MONTHS will have none of it, and suffers for the lack.

When watching 4 MONTHS, I was reminded of David Simon's discussion of humor in THE WIRE. If we showed how life in Bal'more really was, he said, it'd be far too depressing. Not to say that Mungiu should've flinched from his source material, but -- once you get past the nightmarishness of it -- it IS rather drab and one-note.

As for IN BRUGES, I liked it ok. But the humor felt forced at times -- coked-up racist midgets? -- so forced that I got whiplash from the rather catholic ending. Gleeson and Fiennes were terrific, but Farrell -- an actor I've thought was superb in movies like THE NEW WORLD and MIAMI VICE -- was miscast. The part needed someone younger and more stupid.

Was it you or Quint who put this on his worst 2007 list? Which means you rated it along the likes of 'Who your Caddy, In the name of the king, rush hour 3 and Epic movie...pretty retarded if you ask me.. Anyway, Blanchetts performance was definately better than Jolie acting in typical, hysterical larger-than-life oscar mode.

Don't mean to get picky here but uh...Bullseye was a hitman in Daredevil...just saying.

Oh and "Kings" was a better film than most of the Foreign Language nominees but it didn't get a look in.

I am very excited for the release of In Bruge, I always take extra pleasure in watching movies filmed in places I have actually been to. The best part of Bruge was the chocolate, I hope that it gets at least a nod in the movie!
I agree: Bruges was awesome.

I still doubt I'll ever get to see it again, save perhaps if I found the DVD somewhere...

If you're a fan of good, snappy dialogue (and don't mind some serious violence) you need to see this.

The stuff on midgets/dwarves was awesome as well. So non-PC I couldn't believe it. The bit discussing a future, midget race-war almost asphyxiated me.

It's a Jaquelyn Steele movie of the week dressed up in Art House clothes. Some interesting stuff in there but man is the movie horrible. And that "Hurricaine" speech? Awesome in the trailer. Not so much in context.
Kick ass, Capone!

I've had the pleasure of spending a fews days in Bruges on 2 occasions, and It is probably my favorite place I've ever visited. It's a BEAUTIFUL city, filled with amazing shops, and museums. I highly recommend you visit during the Christmas Celebration, where it's all lit up, with an ice rink in the town square. And yes, nothing beats the chocolate and a cold glass of Kriek!

Good news? No one will ever hear about or watch this movie. Only the small percentage of folks that saw the movie will have the desire to go to Bruges.

Hopefully...

I did enjoy the film, but like the film, my experience was bittersweet. I had gone expecting a sharp brilliant comedy, but I did not expect the graphic violence. Reading Capone's review after the fact, I have to agree totally with it and admire how well he has conveyed the feel of the film without spoilers.
