Casino Royale was awesome because Craig makes a great tough Bond (liked Brosnan as Moore's spiritual heir), and Eva Green was a better Bond girl than imaginable. She was half the movie. I hope the next one lives up to the promise.

Who Knew?! I was certainly surprised when they cast him, even more surprised when he was great in the role. Talking of eyebrow-raising casting, I just read that Larry David has the lead in Woody Allen's next (New York-located) movie. Now *that* surprised me!

Seriously, is anyone really critical over the new Bond film? The title, perhaps, which has really grown on me. But the film itself? Where are these naysayers? They need to be reminded that Casino Royale, right out of the gate, is one of the three best Bond films ever.

I thought that Casino Royale was awesome... I cannot wait for the new movie. I hated Bronson as Bond, thought that he sucked up the character and as a reader of Fleming's work, Craig is much more suitable Bond, gruff, worn down, beat up, and as an actor, just nails the character of Bond to a "T". I understood the negativity for the first Craig Bond, but I think he proved himself and that movie rocked the shit. Can't wait for Quantum of Solace!

Pessimism seems to be in vogue. I read an article from Berlinale in HR yesterday, and aside from one exception who I believe is familiar to you, all the producers were bitching about how the dollar is down and life in independent film is ooooh so tough... Dude, things have never been better. A filmmaker can go out there today and singlehandedly get his film seen all around the country, and then fall back on a thirty billion dollar aftermarket on DVD. David Lynch and John Turturro did it with TELEPHONES. No distributors, no publicists - their phones. AND, the studios haven't been producing squat, right? One of the few happy side effects of the strike is that indie producers can sell films for upwards of 200% of the usual going rate right now, and when indie companies profit at the expense of the studios, we know the industry is changing. Boy, do I digress. Somehow, people don't think it's cool when the good guys win anymore. I bet it all ties in with Brad Bird's thesis. People want to see mediocrity to justify their lack of action. When something awesome happens, they acknowledge it, and set up for the fall they need to cushion their own failures. Failure sells. It makes me puke. Now I've puked all over the talkback. Please excuse me!

I loved Casino Royale in great part because of Martin Campbell's second salvation of the franchise. He's a good action director and also a decent actors' director.

Now, with Marc Forster... I dislike evrything I've seen so far from him (haven't seen the Kite Runner yet) and I thought EON would've learnt something from the Brosnan era: you CANNOT make a decent Bond flick if you just give a script to shoot to some washed up drama director and give the story boards to Vic Armstrong. It just doesn't work. So unless Forster understands action and scope and really embraces it, building a healthy synergy with the 2nd unit, I'm afraid the franchise will give in to its old demons. But I'm giving the guy a chance because he seems humbled. At least he doesn't boast about big budget franchise not needing action directors or good script because the visual FX will do the work for him (I'm talking to YOU, Jon Favreau...)

"Washed up" drama director?

Oh please, Monsters Ball, FInding Neverland, and Stranger than Fiction are all very good films. He may not have directed his masterpiece yet, but give the man some credit. That is to say nothing about The Kite Runner, which I haven't seen but have heard good things about. He's earned the right to take a crack at this.

They were the Star Wars of the 60s. Everything afterward, no matter how good or how awesome they were are still commercialized moneymakers. The ship has sailed for Bond let's face it, as long as Babs Broccoli is in control it will always be this way.

You're saying that the goofy 60's bond is better than Casino Royale? Are you fucking kidding? Casino Royale embodies the tone of the Ian Fleming novel, it doesn't ham it up like the rest of them. The reason Bond is such a womanizing, wisecracking guy is because he is a complete sociopath. He's suppossed to be a fucked up character on the edge, which Craig does perfectly.

Re: commercialized moneymakers. It was as true then as it is today. The story behind the making of Dr No. did not follow work experience boy Timmy Twohats offering - "You know, we should make this 'Bond' into a film. But let's not make profit the number one aim. This is just for the sake of making a damn fine picture." It's a nice fantasy. Maybe when I've abolished all currency we'll get there.

The first few Bond films were good, and profitable. And, unless your are advocating the destruction of civilization, currency is good: it allows anyone to buy anything, including tickets to Bond films.

I quite liked Casino Royale so hoping this is good. I do think that the 'reboot' of the franchise was a bit unnecessary.

All the franchise needed was to get rid of the invisible cars and all the cgi which Royale did. Shame they abolished all revious Bond films though.

I was opposed to Craig at first, but thought he was good. My favourite was Dalton's performance in Living Daylights, very accurate to the Fleming Bond.

Still, wish they would dye Craigs hair darker, looks a bit weird.
