I always thought the storyline and mythology behind the whole thing were pretty interesting. Sure, it got extremely convoluted after the third game, but it was much more thought out than the story to a lot of games, especially fighting games.

when i read the misleading title 'most important movie of all time', before i actually clicked on the link, i had a few moments to imagine what this could possibly be about, and for some reason i too thought about the Aliens movies, but in my case I was sort of hoping it was Ridley Scott coming back to tidy up the mess.

How staggeringly disappointed I am to hear that fucking MORIARTY wrote a draft for a Mortal Kombat movie. Unbelievable. After all your script and movie reviews and your opinions on writing and creating new material, and lamenting studios and execs for continually making remakes instead of original ideas, you wrote a Mortal Kombat script? Sorry, but everything you say from now on will be taken with a huge pinch of salt from me. Your writing in your reviews proves you have more talent and originality in you than to churn out something based on a videogame - and not exactly a great game at that. Sigh.

I have to admit, both my wife and I enjoyed the first movie when we saw it on the big screen. I think the reason it worked for us is that it didn't try too hard to make something out fo nothing. It was a simple plot, and the performances were 'good enough'. As long as the writing and performances dont' make you roll your eyes due to ultra-cheesiness, it'll be OK.

The biggest problem with the first movie
by Rufferto
Feb 8th, 2008
02:02:05 PM
was the acting. Sonya and Johnny Cage were particularly awful. I was kind of hoping Shang tsung was going to be old like he was in the original game but the actor who played him was hilariously over the top and so was Kano so it all worked out. Ha. Also Frank Welker is an awesome voice actor but playing Shao Kahn at the end with over used Malbolgia voice was lame. Shao Khan's voice was probably the best thing about the second game but he didn't sound anything like it. Ahh nostalgic.

FIGHT!!!

The first film is the best game adaptation. I fucking loved it. The second was a pile of shit though, and I'm usually tolerant of movies not a lot of people like, but that one was pathetic... I tihnka remake could be an awesome idea... you got talent like Tony Jaa and a bunch of up and coming foreign fighters that can kick ass, no doubt you can find some local people too... All we need is a balls to the wall hardcore movie with a decent plot that's a step up from the first one, which isn't that hard, c'mon! Rated R, you don't have to make it a gorefest, but it can be managably bloody and violent that can please all. In the post Matrix/300 age, the most important thing will be fight cinematography. Again you don't need to make the action totally unrealistic. Keep it as grounded as you possibly can and occasionally do some unbelievable shit, but as long as that shit looks really really fucking cool money shots and eye candy, it'll work!

Just cast a bunch of talented fighters and stuntmen... let's face it, we don't *really* need some Oscar winning acting here, it'd be nice, but let's be real m'kay? We need tough guys and occasionally the innocent people and henchmen who run away and die. Hire talented folks like Jaa if you need some high profile names for the leads, mena nd women who look like the early game characters and can fight. Make it a bit more 'epic' in scope this time, and by that I mean in set design and locations. And again, push the fight coreography, minimize the CG work and only use it when necessary for fireballs and shit. Also end all fights with the coolest fatalities. The fans will love it! Screw the Animalities that shit won't fit, but if you really really want to fan service some of that in there, like make em some kind of meditative scene where the characters are trying to find their inner chi or training or something like that, but honestly it doesn't need to be there.

And lastly, bring back KMFDM, Traci lords and the great soundtrack from the first film!
To Be Clear...

... I have no confidence this will be anything but dreck. And to anyone upset I worked on it, this was almost seven years ago, and it was a nice way to get the ball rolling on other work. Our script was written to order based on a very thick set of requirements from Midway and Threshold, and it is what it is. I'm certainly not going to tell anyone that there is a reason they have to see MK3. Not even my flippin' parents, okay? Trust me... this is the opposite of hype. Consider it "bemused distrust" that led me to post this. I just like hearing them announce things that will never happen... over... and over... and over...

Seriously, it's probably the best videogame adaptation. Not saying much, I know, but I dug the music, the casting, and the attempt to remain faithful to the game (right down to Johnny Cage's hilarious "friendship" fatality when he kills Scorpion). Sonja and Kitana... both smoking hot. The second film was one of the worst things to my retinas have ever been exposed to, but I stick by the first. As for this news... the guy's name is "mink" and he directed a Seagal film? Um, something tells me this will be shit. Just a hunch.

As long as the producers and director commit and publicly proclaim to pursue a very hard "R" rating. If they are going to "reimagine" this it has to be some of the most reprhensible, violent shit ever to hit screens. Full of Fatalities! I loved the first film when I was a kid, no denying. The second film I'm not sure if ever saw it. Mortal Kombat was the game none of us youngins were supposed to play (but still did). It was the GTA of its day. Because our story essentially got repurposed into DEADLY ALLIANCE when the film didn't get made in 2001. It's very Sub-Zero-centric, with him as the lead, and with Rayden forcing him to step up and go into the Netherrealm to find Earth's missing heroes. I wish I could give you a link, but I don't own the script, so can't post it. Sorry.

Peter Jackson as a four part epic length movie; THAT would be the most important film of all time! ..Mortal Kombat was a shite film from a Shite game that looked like photgraphs cut out and poorly animated to look like they're fighting. That 2-dimensional bollocks was behind the times alongside the likes of Tekken and SoulBlade which are the ONLY two video games that truly kicked ass back then and also the only two that would make half decent movies based on their video game backstory.
Mortal Kombat was AWESOME ... but ...

Annihilation broke my heart. So, so, so bad. The best actors: Lambert and Ashby were so much of what made the first one. Granted, I dug Sandra Hess as Sonja in the sequel, but that's all it had going. Plus my dad died two days after I saw it. So, you know ...
I hope this movie is a flawless victory and NOT a FATALITY!

So let me get this straight: They had Moriarty and another guy write a first draft, Moriarty is a name this 'savvy' audience member trusts! So they had you guys write a script, and then decided, no let's let our studio writers and the producers write it instead.

Why do I get the feeling that this is going to be the same pitch from the beginning of Three Amigos that Joe Mantengna gives?

"At first Raiden meets Scorpion, they fight. But then, they come together to face off with Shao Khan and respect each other."

Producers' writing along with 'studio writers' = Batman and Robin. That sucks.

Hey, as an old school gamer, I must have spent hundreds of hard earned dollars playing Mortal Kobmat, Street Fighter (in all its iterations) and all of the other games like World Heroes, King of Fighters and Fatal Fury...Now, that said, Tekken 1 existed alongside Super Street Fighter II and MK3...By the way, both of those games weren't the greatest achievements in gaming history. Mortal Kombat did something that fans wanted: The ability to beat a guy, then rip his goddamned heart still beating from his chest and hold it up...or just yank his head with the spinal cord attached from his body.

Bloodthirsty bastards loved it. The FIRST three dimensional fighter is one of the most in-depth and fastest out there: SEGAs Virtua Fighter. Tekken came after, and wasn't nearly as good. Didn't get good until Tekken 2 and 3....Soul Calibur came out when Street Fighter vs. X-Men did, and was indeed a better game, but the old 2D fighter requires skill, whereas any spaz with palsy can get a cheap win on Tekken.

I loved all the games, but MK will always hold a special place in my heart for the first time I saw the screen go dark and FINISH HIM! was followed by Kano punching into Sonya's chest and yanking out her heart...Tekken didn't have any HOLY SHIT moments like that. It did have a guy with a cougar head.

funny postscript

I mentioned earlier that Tony Jaa should play Liu, and it turns out he was Robyn's stunt double in MK2
