I'm not a fan of wrestling, and I'm a firm believer that it is staple entertainment for closeted rednecks, but I want to see Aronofsky's take on it, and Rourke deserves decent roles. Guess the Noah thing is on hold.

This looks super cool. Like Lazarus, Rourke has re-emerged as one of the greatest character actors of his generation. Considering the success of Sin City and 300, I still have some naive hope that Miller and Rodriguez will someday get to do their version of "The Dark Night," ripped-from-the-comic-style, with Rourke in the lead and Daniel Day Lewis as the Joker.

And, even though he kind of looks like it, Rourke was never really dead. But wasn’t until Sin City that he reminded everybody how he could steal the show from even one of the best cast films in recent memories. Bit parts over the last ten years in Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Masked and Anonymous, Animal Factory, The Pledge, and Buffalo '66, were standouts, but it was a looooong slog through the direct-to-video 90’s from his seminal 80’s roles in Barfly, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Rumble Fish, and Diner. He even made uneven 80’s flicks like Johnny Handsome, A Prayer for the Dying, Angel Heart, Nine 1/2 Weeks, and Year of the Dragon interesting as hell. Loking forward to this, whatever the hell he's doing in THe Informers, and, most of all, his return as Marv in Sin City II, which, seriously, is the most similar in form to Frank Miller's aged Dark Knight that I've seen yet

D.A. makes some pretty heady flix. It is curious to see how he'll approach these stories that are much less sci-fi/fantasy and much more reality.

I was really hoping that THE FOUNTAIN would be the transcendent genre-bending, mind-melting extravaganza that it was hyped up to be, but it was barely above average IMHO. Though, to be fair it has stood up to multiple viewings. (Many of my friends wanted to watch it with me, so I obliged because the film was fairly complex. Second viewing was probably the best.) Many scenes have stuck with me since I'd watched it.

PI, on the other hand, was a well-thought concept, (much like The # 23), but the acting, story, and props were painfully lo-quality.

REQUIEM f/a DREAM, was pretty cool for expounding the visual style that PI touched upon, but pandered too much to the hip-druggie crowd, which, IMHO, sent the wrong message (I'll likely get plastered for this, but, hey, flame on, right?) by showing the exact process of drugs (even though the message intended was that it is harmful...kinda), and was very sensational in that vein. Otherwise, I thought it was an interseting follow-up to PI.

you can make fun of the fans all you want for being morons or gay or what have you...but I never really hear a comeback...people just trade insults back and forth with whoever made the allegations.

I'll definitely go on record as saying I think it takes about as low an intellect to be interested in professional wrestling as it does to watch The Hills. different demographic, but equal ability to quiet whatever functional braincells are left in your brain that are telling you this is all staged and moronic and a waste of your time.

so there you so, anyone want to step up to the plate and defend pro-wrestling and its fans? or is it sort of like saying, "anyone here masturbate with poop and want to talk about it, raise their hand"?

and by way of clarification...

I'm a big fan of wrestling...Old school wrestling, where all the guys looked like out of work plumbers rather than body builders. Where a guy like Dusty Rhodes actually had a shot against a guy like Ric Flair. If this movie's about wrestling, I'll see it....I actually have Body Slam on VHS, and watch it every now and again.

i"m 31 so I remember when I was growing up and wrestling was quite different. Junk Yard Dog, Roddey Roddy Pipper, etc. And of course I shouldn't speak ill of somebody else's hobbies. But i"m simply not a fan of current sport of "wrestling" and find it surprising when so many men are into it. I assume it's some sort of fantasy of being one of those guys that kicks ass, no? And I know not everybody is into PTA or Spike Jones, David O. Russell, et al...... and I"m a big college football fan. Oklahoma Sooners. But... that is an actual sport.

I'm a wrestling fan, i'm just finishing up my degree and applying for my masters. Sure, "dumb rednecks" watch the product but i can imagine like any form of entertainment it has a wide catchment demographic of fans and how "hardcore" or "casual" they are. For me its entertaining because i see it as an evolution of live theatre for the masses. It has great potential for great human drama within the comnfines of storylines (austin v mcmahon was simply a blue collar v white collar dynamic)as well as actually the in ring product (ric flair kicks someones knee for twenty minutes then wins with the figure four)..granted these highs are not always hit and being a wrestling fan is a dirty little secret but contrats in quality of entertainment is hgardly anything new, especially in geeksville, see batman begins v batman and robin. I personally think the wretling industry is ripe for movie examination in a meaningful way and this most certainly has my interest.

Wrasslin' vs. Sports Entertainment
by micturatingbenjamin
Feb 11th, 2008

I could go on forever about this topic. I love wrestling, though now a days I focus more on things like Ring of Honor or watch the old tapes I have of Florida Championship Wrestling...TNA comes close to the wrestling I like...

To wit, here's how I would describe 'modern' Sports Entertainment: A lady was in our break room on Friday night and asked why the man wearing patent leather panties was considered 'tough'. I asked myself the same things back in the day...when trunks show off the veins in a dong, you probably need to step back and wear some damned pants. If you're 'tough', put on some goddamned slacks, and fight. I don't need to strip down to my skivs just to wrassle. Though trunks are clearly different now than they were in the 80s...Kevin Sullivan...he wore trunks...so did Hogan, but not leather, boy-cut panty style shortie-shorts.

Long live wrasslin'.

but if you think wrestling is entertaining then you're just lame. just because you might be smart in something doesn't guarantee you to have a great taste. one thing has nothing to do with the other.

but really, if you're a pimply teen and you're into wrestling, then it's forgivable. but if you're a full grown man, a doctor to boot, and STILL love wrestling... then i'm sorry to break it to you, but you're extremely extremely lame.

I'm sorry i don't quite undertsand what you mean by "lame" i apoloigise if i attempted earlier to show off "how smart i was" or whatever, but i'm struggling to undertand why the topic has become such an easy target were the argument against it is so unfulfilled or frankly poor, u...i would imagine some doctors may watch purely in a vocational sense as they may have patients who have suffered injury thorugh wrestling. Although again i accpet that can be completely wrong. Someone earlier called this site a big glass house, which i would have to agree with. We are mostly geeks here, with interests that may be considred childish or lame, so why discriminate between them?
