"the weakest “Lost” season premiere"
by newc0253
Feb 7th, 2008
05:33:53 AM
yeah, i agree. but if, you think about it, none of the other premieres followed on from a finale with such a massive reveal.

To put it another way, the reveals at the end of season 1 (the Others snatch Walt) and season 2 (Swan Station blows up) were easily weaker than the season 3 finale. The real suprises (what was actually in the Hatch, the Others village) came in the followups.

"weakest "Lost" season premiere"
by Agent Johnson
Feb 7th, 2008
08:10:48 AM
Are you kidding me? I think it may be the best. I've never seen a show that didn't skip a beat from the previous season ender like this one. It was like a continuation, yet you feel the show has turned a corner, heading to an ultimate final. It really felt like a glimpse on what is to come from here on out. It seemed like every segment had a WTF? moment. Can't wait to see what's next on this show.

Watch in the first season when Adam and Eve are first found. They have those black and white rocks on them. Jack puts those rocks in his pocket. Maybe they're still there? Maybe he still has them? I think that Adam is Jack.
saying 4.1 was the 'weakest' Lost season premiere...
by newc0253
Feb 7th, 2008
08:33:20 AM
...doen't mean that it was bad.

I thought 4.1 was very good and i agree it was essentially a very smooth continuation from 3.22. But it certainly didn't have anything like the major reveals that we got in 2.1 or 3.1.

Again, I don't think that's a bad thing. But it is a departure from the 'tradition' (such as it is) of finding out something really big in each season opener.

What's in the hatch? A dude. And a computer. The episode started strong, but never really went anywhere. And major reveals? The Oceanic 6? Charlie MAY still be alive? Team Jack and Team Locke? Hurley sees Jacob's cabin? Hurley regrets his decision of going with Locke? Pretty MAJOR reveals, if you ask me. The actin was spectacular, especially by Jorge Garcia, who had the unenviable task of taking what has been a fairly comedic character and making him pretty serious. I don't know. Maybe people have just raised their expectations so high for this show that they can't see the forest anymore.

Contents of the hatch not a major reveal?
by newc0253
Feb 7th, 2008
09:05:52 AM
Really?

I made a lot of guesses as to what the hatch contained but i don't think any of them included a guy punching numbers into a computer every 109 minutes in order to prevent the world from ending.

and that this was all part of a funky 60s science initiative studying things like ESP.

*shrug*

If that's not a major reveal, I don't know what is. By contrast, I find the fact that Hurley regrets going with Locke is interesting but hardly a 'major reveal'. It's more like the kind of hints and clues that Lost hands out on a weekly basis.

Honestly, I think the premiere

seemed weak because of the huge gap since the last season finale. People forget and get out of the flow and it takes a while to get sucked back in. The same phenomena happened with The Sopranos. Everyone said it started going downhill after season 3, which - coincidentally - was when they really started taking huge breaks between seasons. I never watched The Sopranos until Season 6 Part 1 was released on DVD, and then I watched them all back to back. I loved them - all of them. Because I never "Snapped out" of the flow.
Season Premiere...Best/Worst.
by Cheif Brody
Feb 7th, 2008
09:16:18 AM
As far as season premieres goes...no...last week was not the best...Most anticipated? Yes...because we had to wait so fricking long for it...but as good as the Season 1 premiere was (most expensive pilot ever shot)...it pales to the Season 2 opener..."What's inside the hatch" is pretty hard to beat.

That said...last week's WAS the best Hurley-centric episode to date...even better than "Dave" which is hard to do. Poor Hugos flash backs had gotten so redundant...last week was a breath of fresh island air.

At least these flashbacks tonight will be from people we've never met before...which should greatly cut down on the "redundancy" factor.

Really looking forward to this episdoe, I read the spoilers above because I know that it wuld stop me from enjoying the show and wow, I think this one is going to be AWESOME!

The overall story arc might (arguably) be "slow" but the pacing of each episode is tight. The stories, writing, characters, acting, directing etc are all great. Plus it's one of the few dramas that both genders from all walks of like can enjoy.

It's "Lost Burnout". It's when you spend a ton of time looking up stuff about "Lost" on the interwebs, dissecting every little nuance in a particular episode, and thinking there is something much much deeper hidden within the show. It's happened to just about every person I know who watches this show. I remember getting in huge discussions about what might be in the hatch: A doorway to another world, and older version of the Losties, World War 2 soldiers. And then it was Desmond. Then your a little let down, because what you IMAGINED was there, was always cooler and better than what was actually there. I think a lot of people are just tired of the constant questions without really solid answers. Hey, I went through the same thing. You gotta learn to like this show for what it is and not what you HOPE or WISH it was. I now treat the show like a funhouse. Ultimately, there's not going to be a life-altering experience at the end of the journey, and I may even be let down. But, man, the journey sure is fun!
LOST > all other serial dramas on TV!

It makes The X-Files look like Howdy Doodie!

Season 1 of the new Battlestar Galactica was GREAT...but it doesn't really fit as a "serial drama." There just hasn't been a serial drama that has ever compared with LOST!

Well, we can relish in seven more weeks of LOST! Then we have to pray for an end to that damn Writer's Strike. Funny, but I didn't care about the strike until I realized that LOST might only air 8 shows if the strike isn't quickly resolved! Now, I want the pope or Congress to intervene!

People just freaked out because there were only 6 episodes before a 2 1/2 month hiatus. Because of that viewers put a lot of weight on those 6 episodes. They expected way too much from them because it was all they were going to get for 2 1/2 months. Rewatch season 3 again on DVD if you can, it's strong from start to finish.

Completely agree. I experienced that between seasons 2 and 3--I was expecting the Swan explosion to have all sorts of immense and immediate consequences, e.g. tons of people would start arriving the island, at least 2 or 3 characters would be killed etc. By the time "Tale of Two Cities" came on, I had the entire season 3 plot arc mapped out in my head... Not saying they did a bad job--I think they've been on top of it--but when you spend 4 months imagining the BEST! STORY! EVER! you can't help but be disappointed.

This season's premier worked really well because the viewers had been teased for weeks and months about the rescue. The mourning for Charlie had almost been lost because the viewers had months to get over it. So when we saw Hurley's reaction, it was very fresh and raw. The promos and teasers for this show usually suck because so many things are presented out of context but the marketing department did a great job this time. How many times can you say that?

'bout 2 years ago they had a night with the creators and stars

the most memorable thing was Edward James Olmos said that if he was relageted to only working in Sci-fi (on par with BSG) for the rest of his career he would be more than happy.

he followed that by saying that if someone had asked him pre- BSG if he would ever consider being in a remake of BSG, he said likely not.

what sold him on the series was when he received the script, he had no idea it was BSG as the first 2 pages before the title page were a mission statement from the shows creators about what they wanted to do with the show, and the level and depth of characters and storylines they wanted to acheive. if the first thing he saw was 'Battlestar Galactica', he would not have read it and just declined....

Season 4 (the final season) starts in April

Get over it people...that stuff has been posted on Lostpedia for months now, and I've managed not to read it. You can usually see a plot synopsis based on the first few lines. Once you do that, just scroll past it. Do you know how much effort it takes to actually sit and read that whole thing? If you read it, its because you really wanted to. Don't shit on Capn Jack because he thinks its funny watching people with no self-control ruin the fun of watching an episode fresh.

Also, Agent Johnson, I think the key to enjoying the payoffs to the LOST mysteries is to admit that whatever you think is automatically going to be wrong. I speculated about what was going to be in the hatch, but instead of trying to come up with a 'Perfect Scenario', I just realized that whatever was in there was going to be a surprise, which it was, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I hate all these people (not you, Agent J) that shout and scream about what they think should happen, and then bitch when that doesn't happen.

to wash up on shore. That would raise so many new storyline possibilities. Say, for instance, Jake Gyllenhaal or Hasslehoff or Lindsay Lohan or Bill O'Reilly just found their way onto the island and became an ongoing character. At the very least, there should be a character who's a talk radio host join the Losties.

Weakest season premiere
by Bob of the Shire
Feb 7th, 2008
04:36:16 PM
Was the Season 3 opener. The big reveal of the Others camp was handled exactly like the reveal of the hatch, so we saw it coming from a mile away. And the rest of the episode was boring as hell, foreshadowing the low quality of the rest of the first half of season three.

I agree that the season four opener wasn't the best ever, but it was a solid episode and made me eager for more. Abaddon, the "we have to go back" plot, more Jacob goodness, and rain-soaked Kate made for an intrigueing hour of television. It didn't blow my dick off but it was better than anything from the first half of season three and on par the series usual quality. Here's hoping it keeps it up.

Oh, and anyone saying Lost is the best drama on TV must be relatively new to the medium. The Shield and The Wire are the most obvious examples of shows that severely outclass Lost in the writing and acting categories.

It's like spoiling a book by reading the last chapter first and then saying: "Fuck you William Faulkner for putting the ending in this book!"

Although I'm not sure too much William Faulkner gets read in these talkbacks. Maybe I should have said Timothy Zahn or Dr. Seuss.

Oh, sure, The Wire and The Shield are great shows. But from originality, they are not. Lost has is something completely new to television. It is a soap opera without being a soap opera. It's scope alone is worth it being in the top tier of all time TV. I'm not one dimensional on this. The Sopranos did the same thing. I've seen The Shield, but I think it's really just an extension of gritty 90's anti-hero cop movies. BSG is also helping to redefine a genre, which is why it, too, is one of the best on TV. X-Files, Simpsons, Seinfeld...All these shows are some of TV's all-time greats. What's great about TV is that there are room for all kinds of great shows. Lost is one of them. And is in the same class as The Shield and The Wire.

I'll continue to watch "Supernatural" live and just record "Lost", but I may have to give up on the show completely if it doesn't start to improve.

For the one who asked earlier, I think one one producers of LOST mentioned if they could gear up and restart production by the end of February (and they are READY) they could spit out 5 or 6 more eps but not a complete 16 ep season. I know I read it from a producer but I can't cite it to back it up. I hope I'm way off and we can get 8 more. And the season 4 opener was just WAY too anticipated. Too long of a break. There is no way they could match expectations. But they moved the story along with another awesome flash forward, a beloved dead character makes an appearance and we know it was real in some sense since a co-patient saw him too (that was a slight WTF moment), we get a Ben Smack (thanks Danielle!), "I'm not quite dead yet" Naomi (best Monte Python accent), wet Kate, Locke Smack (thanks Jack! "click" -tilts head), a camp divided, Claire's quivering lips (oh boy...there is somewhere else to go with that), Jacob/Christian/eyeballs in the creepy cabin...that vanishes at the count of 3, and on and on and on. Some of you had some SERIOUS freakin expectations if that wasn't at least a B+ episode. Loved it. Tonight will be better. New drinking game...take a shot every time someone lands a punch. Whew.

Charlotte Staples Lewis. What about CS Lewis' works could connect to LOST? I've read all his major Christian work but none of Narnia - and I assume that something in there is a hint about the island. There is a Christian book called The Great Divorce where he wrote about a group of people who were caught in a Hell of their own making, repeating some of the same dreary choices and mistakes from life and the kicker was at the end, God offered them a chance to leave yet none of them would. They were unwilling to leave a reality they knew due to fear, arrogance, stubbornness - so they settled for the Hell they knew instead a Heaven that was an unknown. Terrible summary...that book just came to mind crossing LOST and CS Lewis.

Great point. Hell, the whole institution could be an illusion and he's lithiumed into a straightjacked drooling idiot in a padded cell. But these writers are so damned clever, they wouldn't throw in that patient acknowledging Charlie only to say, oh, yea that guy was a hallucination too. I think that was a purposeful clip - showing that at least "something" is appearing to Hurley. To the other patient, I guess he could have looked like anyone - but to Hurley he looked like Charlie. I gotta believe that was written like that to solidify the fact it wasn't just imagined.

"Cop shows"
by Bob of the Shire
Feb 7th, 2008
06:54:29 PM
I didn't watch The Shield for years because that's exactly what I thought, that it was just a "cop show" and it's gimmick was that it was gritty. I could not have been more fucking wrong. It isn't about genre or scope, those are things irrelavent to a shows quality. Labeling The Shield or The Wire as simply "cop shows" shows how ignorant you are to those programs. They're working on and exploring levels of storytelling and character that Lost doesn't even attempt.

I love Lost (and BSG) too, the first season of Lost is one of the best television history IMO. But The Shield, specifically, raised the bar on what I thought possible for the television medium in terms of acting and writing. It took me a long time to put aside my ignorant notion that it was just another cop show and actually give it a fair shot, and I hope everyone else does the same. If you have any interest in television and the potential it holds, The Shield, The Wire, and The Sopranos are required viewing. I don't think you can honestly bring an informed opinion to the discussion until you've viewed each.

There is nothing wrong with The Shield being a "cop show". It is what it is. The Sopranos is a gangster show. Labeling it's genre isn't a calling it bad. But it is a cop show. It may even be one of THE best "cop shows" ever. I'm not saying The Shield or The Wire are bad, but that Lost is equal to some of the best television ever. No, I have not sat down and really gotten into those shows, although I intend to. That doesn't mean I cannot see the brilliance of Lost. It is a show that has helped to redefine television. Perhaps it is YOU who are too ignorant to see the place of Lost in the history of television. Or, maybe you are just to pretentious.

I have had it with all you people who slam Ben incessantly. Use your brains, dammit. Like Ben, who is a master manipulator, you are being manipulated to hate him. Is there not one of you who will stop for a moment and THINK that he might be right about all this? Yes, his methods are Machiavellian, but he only resorted to ordering his people to kill when things started getting out of control. Before that there was intimidation and espionage – but the Others never killed anyone, did they? That didn’t stop our castaways from doing so, however. Think before you write capriciously . . . . . . . . and feel free to tell me how this show has jumped the shark? It’s a big mystery being revealed slowly over as many seasons as it will air. Perhaps some episodes may not be quite as compelling as others, but come on! We're seeing some of the best writing, acting, and production the medium has ever seen . . . . . . . . and of course, if you don’t like it, then you’re free to get lost . . . .

5 stars. *Spoilers* We learn
-why everyone thinks there were no survivors (we didn't know why for sure before now)
-that the downed plane in the ocean doesn't contain any of the people on the island (burying forever the 'purgatory' and 'twin' theories)
-why, in broad strokes, the new team is there
-that the new team is pretty much in the dark as to the true motives of the bad black dude
-that at least some of the team members are trying to figure out what Dharma is from the outside.
-there is a definite spiritual aspect of the show. It seemed pretty clear in his flashback that Miles at least THOUGHT he was talking to a dead kid, and it showed him the hidden money.
We don't know:
-what the polar bear was doing in tunisia
-WHY they want Ben so bad
-if the team truly is that bad
-Is ben wanted for the murder of the dharma team? If they wanted him so bad, why do they keep up with the food drops?
There are still a million questions, but I thought they did a GREAT job introing these people as good characters and fleshed out a lot of answers about why they're there. some final questions:
-why so matter of fact that the guy couldn't come to the phone, as if he was calling his friend from his house instead of a tropical island field
-why did Daniel cry at the beginning (and did his wife call him Sam?) Is he an "ESP" sensitive physicist or something? What does "not scatter quite right" mean?
I say Michael is his guy on the boat.

The dharma polar bear is found unearthed in an archelogical dig in Tunisa. The atmosphere has no pollution so the light doesn't scatter. The reason having children on the island is so important. The reason they didn't want to take a "native" back with them. The reason there is a list with good people on it. Why there's no radio transmissions or airplanes flying overhead. That island exists before humanity. If you travel back in time and create a society, then you control and mold human civilization itself. Anyway that was one of the best episodes of the series.

That's why people hate him. Instead of stopping to think about a situation like Locke, he just waves a gun around and gets all teary eyed. He's not even near as tapped into the island as Locke or even Hurley. Locke's the one people hate for no reason, other than them being narrowminded dumbasses who need a "badguy" to hate, so they picked Locke since he was the "weirdest" until Ben came along, who they chose to hate because his sheer intelligence compared to that knuckle dragging ape Jack intimidates them.

some people, Michael Ausiello of Tvguide included, were annoyed that no one seemed upset this episode that Charlie's dead. Come on! These people either A) think rescue is imminent, or B) Wonder what Locke is doing and who this new person is. How many people have died on this show? You have to assume that in the snippets that we see, the characters have more important things to do than cry over charlie. I'm sure they'll address his death more fully with claire later. I think he was referring to the light being "strange. it doesn't scatter quite right." given that faraday is a physicist (or so he says), it seems to indicate that the island isn't normal. I'm going with the stuck in time theory. It's late 2004 on this show, but they can explain Walt being older and the snazzy phones by saying that the outside world is actually current day.

In the premiere during the final scene, Kate asked Jack if she was thinking of Charlie. So obviously they are mourning his death. How can those idiots consider that a continuity error? Did you not watch tonights episode and see how he was going to "clean up his own mess" Let me guess, your one of those people pissed that he "made" sawyer kill cooper, like he held a gun to his head. Sawyers a big boy, he can do his own thing. And why are people still arguing about Locke preventing people from getting off the island. We KNOW now that getting off the island is NOT GOOD. Or did Jack look like he was having a good time in the season 3 finale.

Probably. Remember Ben told Micheal and Walt to head is a specific direction to get off the island. Plus in the one flashback with the submarine, the passengers were sedated and made reference to the last leg being "a little bumpy" They are definately in the past. It explains how they could acquire people like Locke's dad so easily, Walt's aging, the phones, the polar bear showing up in an archaeological dig.

somebody mentioned that the others didn't really starting killing till later, but what people (including, sometimes it seems, lost writers) forget is that the others killed first. ethan killed AND mutilated that steve (or scott? ;)dude way back in season one when he was trying to get the castaways to give claire back to him. this is one of the things that bugged me at times during season three when it seemed like the lost writers were trying to get us to look at the others (particularly mr. friendly among others) in a softer light. that WERE cold blooded killers and they killed FIRST. why should we have any warm feelings toward their motives other than the fact that what they are doing they believe is completely justifiable which makes them even more mistifying and fucked up if they put so much faith in ben and his commune with jacob, a leader that they appear to be accepting on faith... anyhow, fucking cool episode.

Dharma discovered a way to anchor it in place and study it. Every 108 minutes the anchor had to be recalibrated or the island would jump to a different place/time. When the hatch blew, the whole thing started jumping again. How the boat got to the island with the helecopters.. fuck I don't know.
Dharma planted the plane?
by tristiac
Feb 7th, 2008
10:15:17 PM
goddamn that episode raised a bunch more mysteries and questions. another great one though. So I'm guessing that plane at the bottom of the ocean was planted there by some organization. Dharma? Certainly whoever scary black man works for. He and Naomi certainly seemed to be aware that there could have been survivors, and that the plane crashed in the pacific, not the indian ocean. Also beard man knew that that wasn't the pilot (because of his wedding ring? that seems like a dumb way to figure it out, also what news report shows decomposing bodies like that? but I digress). Also Charlotte doesn't believe the news she sees about the plane going down. I wonder how she knows. and polar bear in tunisia with a dharma collar? I can't even theorize on that one, I'll just have to wait to see how that unfolds. Anyway why go through this big show of lying? Maybe if Dharma knew the plane crashed there because of the electromagnetic anomaly thing, they didn't want the rest of the world snooping around. I mean despite the fact that all the members of Dharma who were on the island died, they still seem to be able to communicate with it. Remember that plane that dropped off food and stuff. And it would make sense that the freighter people are part of Dharma. For one, beard man referred to Juliet as a native, and Dharma was at war with the natives as we saw in Ben's flashback. Also it would make sense that they want Ben, who participated in the purge that killed off all of their people. But why would Dharma put together a group like that to go capture Ben, the great manipulator? Like Naomi said, they had no military training. What's the deal with sixth sense angry asian dude? Whats the need of sending someone who can talk to the dead? Well, if my theory about the big plane cover-up is correct, then It validates my theory as to what the Oceanic 6 are hiding from everyone. As I had previously guessed, they had to make a deal not to reveal all about the island and the people there in exchange for being taken out of the island. There will probably be some story about how they were found somewhere random, and some miraculous story about how they were able to leave the plane before it crashed. Although I still have no idea how they'll explain how a plane leaving australia to Los Angeles ended up in the Indian ocean.
