Didn't Crimson Tide have actual sub commanders credited for their advice? Seems like a shame to not use their input 100%. And yeah, the only promo I saw for Jesse James in Australia was the director and Pitt giving interviews for The Movie Show. I gleaned that they didn't agree on a few things and that Dominik ended up deferring to the star, but other than that they didn't seem displeased with the end product. I guess when you aren't kicking ass at the BO or getting an Oscar nom for everything, you're in no man's land.

That's a true Disney film. Any movie that has a group of scientists carrying a cat from outer space that has a magic collar and is also in a coma into a den of mafia pool sharks is a-okay with me. Plus, it has Sandy Dunkin's eye. Anyone ever notice that Sandy and Anne Heche are the same person?

02:54:48 AM
But it feels dated. It would have worked better if it had been made back in the early 80s. The other thing is and I dread saying this, but that Beegees Sgt Pepper Movie butchered those Beatles songs to such an awful degress. That when I hear them in Across the Universe. It takes me back to that dreadful movie. Especially when they sing that lyric - "I want you. I want you so baaaad. I want you so bad its driving me mad." It feels like late 70s cheese.

some real classics this week. Tootsie, Midnight Express, The Apartment and Wall St. I'd say those are 4 automatic purchases if you don't already own them in some format or other. And Harry, good call on Across the Universe. The ultimate missed opportunity of last year, although personally I'd say it's tied with Southland Tales for that dubious distinction.

...in his guest appearance on Beauty & The Beast. I still remember that episode, and I haven't even seen the damn show since it originally aired. I don't think they could have gotten anyone better and more suited for that role.

Anyways, Assassination of Jesse James is a must have for me, already picked up the new SE of Wall Street and Midnight Express, and I'm curious enough about The Brave One to give it a shot, but everyone I know who saw it and enjoyed it said the ending pretty much betrayed the whole rest of the film, so see how that goes I guess. Crimson Tide is another fun film, with a great ensemble cast, but again, already own it. Oh, and I thought Elizabeth: TGA sucked ass personally. Never been a fan of the massively over-rated Tootsie either. Wow, slow week for me, looks like...

by brokentusk
Feb 5th, 2008
06:27:12 AM
If you were bored during this film you need to hand in your film-lover membership card because this was not only one of the best films of 2007, but it will go down in history as one of the most over-looked films in cinema history. With all the problems behind-the-scenes, for the film to be so profound and well-constructed is a miracle. I wish I knew what really happened to cause Warner Bros. to turn against the film and Andrew Dominik, because for the life of me I can't understand why they wouldn't promote this more. It runs three hours, but it felt like half of that – truly an excellent, gorgeous film.

What a fucking tool you are, Harry. I don't think you will ever live down dissing MST3K, one of the most universally (geek universe) loved THINGS, not just series, but THINGS, of all time.

I don't think you really get what MST3k is trying to do. Sure they're making fun of the movies, but they do it with a lot of love and appreciation. Also, a lot of the movies they have done have gotten a lot of popularity due to their MST3k eps (such as "Manos: The Hands of Fate" and many others). To call it a "puppet show" is ridiculous. Sometimes you need to edit yourself for the sake of your fans. Otherwise, "Across the Cartooniverse" was not good and I'm glad that you realized that.

I hate HARRY KNOWLES. Harry's supposed to be the ultimate fanboy – comic books and movie posters from a young age and fattened up by the paterfamilias like a cow waiting to be led into the slaughterhouse in his oh so hip and trendy little Texas town, where Harry is supposed to be a fanboy. But the truth, True Believers, is that Harry has never met a film he couldn't slobber all over if the studios sent him somewhere or something for free...just ask Peter Jackson...or Guillermo del Toro...or Robert Rodriguez...or Quentin Tarentino. They all know he can be bought. His often embarrassing reviews, frequently lowlighted by their disgusting sexual declarations (what no stories about how you can't do the missionary position in fear you'll crush Yoko?), usually go on and on about what repressed memory from childhood could be dredged up by watching a movie or TV show. In one of the most obvious "I just don't get it" moments I've ever read, Harry spouts on about how he hates MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER because he hates talking during movies – and even more so – he hates talking during rare genre film efforts from the past. That's the whole fucking point, Von Blimpenstein! They are watching cheesy movies that no one gives a shit about, like SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS or MITCHELL! ("Ma-Ma-Ma-Mitchell!")and crack wise all over them, like the smartasses who did it during elementary school. "Rare genre film efforts from the past." What a clueless hump! If you want to get the original film, kiss up to some studio or DVD company and I'm sure they'll send them to you on DVD for free...just mention how awesome they are and I'm sure you'll get them. The truth is, I was a lesser fan of MS3K when the host switched from Joel Hodgson to Mike Nelson. Joel's episodes are hands down some of the funniest things I've ever seen/heard, leaving me breathless with laughter. If you can't even grasp the concept, you should just hand the whole reins of the operation over to Drew McWeeny, who has become over the years not only an excellent film reviewer, but Hollywoood insider to boot. Holy Jebus, but you suck!

They suffer that we may laugh. Really wanting to see the movies uninterrupted out of love of film is a very good reason not to like MST3K, though. Mind you, saying "me and my friends could do this" to MST3K fans is like yelling "hey say something? What are you, mute?" at Teller... definitely groan-inducing. (Actually Harry and his friends could do MST3K, and bring both the funny and the obscure references, but not everyone could. Besides, Joel thought of it first and that's just that.) PS: I have only seen Casino Royale 2006 w/ the Rifftrax show playing :P

Since you can remain anonymous and Harry puts himself out there and has for years to bring us this site and he cannot, how fair is it for you (and everyone else) to come to his house (this site) and call him names and make fun of his weight and make accusations that he is "bought" by the studios. Harry loves movies more than you ever will. I don't always agree with him or this site but I have loved it from the beginning and I will continue to. It takes balls and a thick skin to weather the insults and negativity of people like you (who are a lot braver online than in public where you would get your ass kicked into next week if you displayed such a blatant lack of civility and manners.) While not a fan of posts that insult people because of their weight like Kingkirby's did, he did offer a more lucid post as to why MST3K works as opposed to Harry's casual dismissal of the show. At least we can be grateful that Harry's review didn't wind up being a metaphor for a sexual act or female genetalia. I was taking Harry's original rantings against MST3K and altered them to both parrot and parody how absurd and dismissive he was being. The rest, "Frank Black" (like Meglos points out, I'm sure that's a completely real and unhidden-behind name), is shall we say...a work of fiction. Harry is a big boy and certainly has ways to take care of a free-speechifyin' numbnutz troll like me. So don't go getting yourself all worked up there, Sunshine. The cinematography is amazing, Casey Affleck is PERFECT as Bob Ford and Brad Pitt is BADASS as Jesse James. The book it's based on is incredible too, and the adapatation is spot on. Big Tuna and others, Harry was just making a joke for the sake of a ham-fisted (huh huh I said... nevermind) metaphor. Geddit?

As for Express, whatever you thought of the film's ending (I'm not disagreeing with you), look at your line in isolation. If you made the ending "a guy escaping from a prison boat" there are probably just as many people that would have found it just as outrageous/ridiculous in the context of the film, whether it was actually true or not. I'd lay a thousand bucks that it would have been ridiculed by the critics for an action ending, and wouldn't have been half the oscar bait it so assuredly was otherwise. Maybe totally unfair and he could have made a harrowing setpiece that would have knocked it out of the park, but I can understand why Parker wouldn't want to end such a heavy film with ostensibly an action setpiece. It's emotional and tonal logic (probably no such term but). Is that fair enough? Like I say, I'm just talking the action ending, not the one we got. Tonal inconsistency is a fair argument in this case. Cheers.

Starring the lovely Rosario Dawson as the sexually inexperienced ( cue Dr. Evil: Riiiiiiiight) college student who gets herself raped and then takes revenge! Sounds exactly like a grindhouse flick; too bad from what I've heard it is NOT--instead it's supposed to be quite serious and heavy-handed, though still "must" viewing for those of us who would like to lick her up one side and down the other! And regarding the Tripplehorn business: it is my opinion that there is one moment at which it is made VERY clear that Douglas' character has rammed himself in through the out door: watch Tripplehorn's face and you'll see a reaction that doesn't normally accompany vaginal intercourse.

and I can't help feeling that I just witnessed true cinematic greatness. Perhaps one of the greatest movies ever made. It'll take a while for that one to fully digest though, like all true masterpieces. It's gotta stand the test of time, but that's as sure a thing as I think I've ever seen. So let me put the question out there - HOW THE FUCK IS THAT ABORTION OF A FILM, JUNO (NO PUN INTENDED) NOMINATED AND JESSE JAMES ISN'T? To be that great and not win is one thing, but to get passed over for a nomination by some piece of shit comedy where every other line is so ridiculous it makes you want to puke and the main character is just a cipher for the fucking doochebag writer? This is an injustice the likes of which we have never seen. YES, this goes beyond Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Citizen Kane, etc. It's all relative, you see. The fact that there are VASTLY inferior films nominated and this was passed over is TOTAL INSANITY. I can't believe there aren't stories being written about this. How did this happen? Did the screeners not go out? Were they hijacked and sold in Chinatown? What the fuck?!!?!?!?!

Why do you have to do the Kindergarten thing everyone else here does and call Juno an 'abortion' (oh the wit) just because JJ was treated unfairly? Can you not grasp the concept of not needing to denigrate one to somehow support your argument for the other? I call it shitting on one to shine the other.

I thought JJ was incredible and yes "it wuz robbed". Go the Aussies and so on. And good on Pitt for putting his weight behind a 70s type film that would otherwise never have been made in the first place. If you love it, great. Everyone goes on about how fucked up the Oscars are in the first place. Wasn't Afflek nominated for best supporting? There's your typical Oscars farce right there. There were two lead actors in that thing. Pitt and Affleck. Affleck wasn't a "supporting" actor - but the studio labels him that way because politically it increases their chances for more statues.

Talk about apples and oranges. I also loved Juno (barring the quirkier-than-thou songs), so sue me. I was going to go into why, but there's not much point in justifying it to you, obviously. I don't even know where to begin with your hackneyed assertion that a comedy is inherently worth less than a drama. You're ripping on them for some sort of outrageously subjective process of elimination? Glass houses buddy. Ooh it's all a conspiracy. Ever consider that the thing's release and cut was fucked by its own studio for ages? Why would anybody be surprised if they hardly bothered to submit the thing - maybe screeners barely did go out as you say - so why then aren't you ranting against the studio instead of Juno? What the fuck does Juno have to do with anything? Whatever dude.

Where did I make the assertion...
by SK229
Feb 8th, 2008
11:37:45 PM
that comedy was inherently inferior? I meant that Juno was a piece of shit comedy, which I believe it is. How does one defend lines like the Morgan Freeman bit? Or the now infamous, I swear to blog.

I don't think comedy is inherently inferior, I love comedy and think it gets a bad rap come Oscar time. Much worse off than dramas, but to me, comedy classics are films that would never have gotten nominated anyway. Movies like Trading Places or National Lampoon's Vacation, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles last much longer than the kind of comedy that typically gets nominated and are, I think, pure genius.

What the fuck is it with you Juno fans, anyway? So you like the movie, good for you. I'm happy for you. Does that mean everyone else has to like it? I'm just saying that when it comes to that movie, a LOTTA people are saying the emperor has no clothes. As far as the Oscars go, it just crossed a line that something so obviously as great as Jesse James should be passed over... you're right, it's a failure of the studio, of Brad Pitt, of the academy, and of the media for inserting Juno as the 'Little Miss Sunshine' indie darling that I think we're now supposed to get every year. The studios will happily supply it and the media and the academy will gladly eat it up, whether the film merits it or not (again, subjective, but imho, some things are, empirically, great, and I think Jessa James falls into that category.) They'll eat it up because A)those movies are cheaper to produce and B) if you're the studio that has the one that's just marginally better than all the others, you just boosted your bottom line on DVD sales and Oscar hype. Cause hey... it MUST be that good if such a small movie could compete with NCFOM and TWBB, right?

I believe the same goes for Atonement, which fills in another 'niche' in the Best Picture category and that's sad that it even seems to be going more in that direction every year. Each film that's nominated seems to have to satiate a certain part of the public's appetite for the kinds of films they like. TWBB filled Jesse James slot, and there's just no room for two similar films anymore. Casey Affleck being nominated doesn't make up for shit. So your'e saying fans of the film should be thankful that he was even nominated? As though they're giving such a gift to the film? He SHOULD be nominated and they're the ones who would look like fools if he wasn't.

Lastly... dude... I'm not the only one saying this. Plenty of people agree with what I'm saying, although I'll probably just get attacked some more. Whatever to you too dude.

No no (massive/verbose reply)

I think we're both crossing our wires a bit. I wasn't even remotely saying we should be thankful he was nominated. I don't know how I can actually articulate it any better than saying him being nominated for best supporting is a sham. Yes he should be nominated - as BEST ACTOR - and so should Pitt. Because they both deserve it. And because there were two leads in that film. Pitt and Affleck. See what I'm saying? No way in hell was Casey just a "supporting" role. It's bullshit semantics used by the studios because if they put up Pitt for best in a leading role (again there were TWO leads in this film) and Affleck for supporting it gives them a shot at 2 statues rather than lose out to themselves or get none at all in a single category. Which doesn't have much to do with the film itself. Am I making any sense?

O.K. - you've got an ensemble cast. In that case you don't (IMO) pick a male and female actor and call them your leads for your campaign at the end of the year. They're all leads if it truly is a balanced ensemble thing. What about something like (the original) Sleuth. Two leads. At least if one was a woman it would some a headache for the studio and the Academy (sarcasm)!

It also shits me that Ratatouille wasn't nominated for best film. Not best animated film, best film period. And here we go again with the semantics - WTF do they mean by best animated feature anyway? Best feature that happens to be animated? Or best achievement in the actual ANIMATION? Because those can be two completely different things. Take Blue Sky for example. They're the only ones who compete quality-wise with Pixar for the skill of the actual animation. But their (Fox-driven) stories are shit. Then you have (this may be a bad example as I haven't seen it yet but will hazard a guess) say, Persepolis. Just say the story is fantastic. It work completely as a film. But the animation isn't particularly skillful and certainly doesn't push any boundaries. Which then would you call "best animated feature"? Same with costume design or art direction. I work in these fields so I'm in NO way saying it' as simple as looking up a textbook. But I'm always offended that sci-fi and fantasy films are inherently more ambitious (due to having to design an aesthetic to start with) in these disciplines and therefore should be considered at least equal if not MORE deserving in some cases than your average period drama. It's called best ACHIEVEMENT in art direction, or costume design or whatever.

Finally, which should have won for best ACHIEVEMENT in visual effects for 99? The Matrix, which had great effects (which were completely in context and in service to storytelling) but whose signature bullet-time effect was a small extension of the frozen moment (and stretched it conceptually no further than the sex scene in Fight Club) which had been around for more than a decade and reportedly more than two. Or Phantom Menace, which similarly didn't' introduce anything new, but combined every existing old-school effect under the sun with every digital one in a display of quality effects magnitude that pushed the whole industry forward (too bad the storytelling was crap). Before I get shit about how 'computery' it all looked I'd be willing to bet most don't realise that they used more miniatures than the first trilogy combined, matte paintings by the truckload and photogrammetry of real miniature landscapes - but combined with a whole bag of innovative digital techniques. I guess the answer all depends on how we (or the Academy) define "achievement".

As for the comedy being "inherently inferior" sorry but when I read your polemic that's how it came across to me. From your second post I can see that's not necessarily how you meant it. Can you see how I got the "shit on one to shine the other" from the initial one? So fair enough.

I will defend Juno in so much as it took on the challenge of numerous character stereotypes but when it came to the crunch turned them on their head by introducing a completely believable twist in perception or honest breakdown of those clichéd traits. Construction and pacing was spot-on too. The initial view of the 'cool' and 'uptight' adoptive parents changes in a perceptive (semantics!) way, and not with some dorky speech. Even Juno when it comes right down to brass tacks doesn't have some pithy or even tear-jerking monologue. She falls apart silently like anyone else in over their head. No fireworks. Sure it was always going to be an indy critical darling but it's a bit kneejerk myopic to hold that against it, and the same goes with the media darling "douchebag writer". Don't confuse the singer with the song. Generally I would run a mile from this kewler-than-thou verbal gymanstic stuff. I'm branded a heretic for saying the Buffy TV show used it as a big-arse crutch. So I was surprised at myself for finding that I felt the smart-arse shtik was a reasonable defence mechanism that fades away when the important stuff kicks in. Just valley girl for the naughties sorta stuff. The music did shit me a bit though. To be brutally honest with you, I don't even remember the Morgan Freeman line, so you may be right there. And I also don't believe that if Codywhatshermadeupname writes shit for the rest of her media spotlight time that it diminishes this film. That's like saying a sequel or remake ruins the original. Moronic. The original is still there. It's still good. The bit about Cody being a douchebag was the other reason I thought you were doing "the kindergarten thing". Who gives a fuck about her tabloid antics, it has nothing to do with the film in isolation. They don't interrupt the flick with ads showing her latest wacky exploits. She doesn't break down the fourth wall with commentary. Let it go man.

Anyway SK if you made it this far and haven't committed seppuku through boredom, I hope I explained things a bit better and hope we can agree to disagree on Juno. And be united in our revulsion for the studio fucking around with JJ for what, over a year? At least we got the Andrew Dominik cut in the end, even if they did disown it come Oscar time. I'm just saying that the Oscars are such a joke these days so don't tear yourself up too much about the injustice. There wasn't much to begin with! Cheers dude.

We're looking forward to this new Jesse James flick on HD-DVD. And while I'm at it, allow me to mention that it is my belief that HD-DVD will continue to co-exist with Blu-ray. Consumers are making it so, seeing the advantages HD-DVD offers (especially in price). We're currently up to 14 HD-DVD movies in our house, preferring the "combo disk" format of HD-DVD. And our already huge dvd library will continue to co-exist with our expanding "HD" library, in only HD-DVD. Anyone want to take a bet that there will be "at least" two more studios joining (or rejoining) the HD-DVD camp by 2009? Sure, those studios may also provide content for Blue-ray. But I guarantee that HD-DVD will not be going away for a very long time.
