looks like an attempt to give it a stylized vibe à la 300. Given the sharpness of Libatique's work on the movie so far, I'm not sure it was a good idea to begin with. More than the CGI quality it's a lack of coherence from the TV spot point of view. Maybe it'll work on the big screen. The motion capture was pretty flawless though.

I was in Ireland a couple summers ago. All the news from the local papers to the hosts on the local radio shows was about Bono being exactly how South Park depicted him. Apparently, the noted anti-capitalist and Irish patriot was moving his personal equity/stock (it might not have been equity, but it was definitely a Wall Street/total capitalist model) business from Ireland to another country to avoid taxes. I guess it's all good and well to preach socialism, until you have to help pay the bill.

In the new superbowl spot Iron Man dodges a tank missile, shoots one of his own at the tank and yep, you guessed it... walks slowly to the camera as the tank explodes behind him. I think Ice Cube did this also in "XXX" and most recently, gulp, the Coen Brothers in No Country used the trick with Javier Bardem's character walking into a pharmacy after he rigs that car out front to explode as a diversion. Can anyone think of other movies that they've seen that played out shot?

I wasn't calling Ireland socialist. The nation has caught the attention of other European nations due to it's long history of economic suckitude, reversed by it recent trend towards freer markets and lower taxes. I actually know someone who worked for Stan Winston until the end of 2007 and those practical suits do ROCK! Just finished watching the 720p version from Apple.com. The casting should be interesting to see "act", the villain Iron Monger looked sweet in the dark fast-moving shots, and the flight stuff looks awesome. What looked bad or unfinished was that PS3 looking end scene and when slowed down the digital compositing of Bridges head onto the Iron Monger suit as well as the 75% armored RDJ whose head looked poorly slapped onto a CGI body. I hope that these small things get tweaked before the film's debut. I have tons of faith in Favreau and loved his work on Zathura and his comedic all-around great sidekick in Daredevil.

Actually, I believe I am the only one who is saying that the cgi is kinda bad/iffy right now, and since I know this is the first time I've written any comment about this film whatsoever, I'd say you are full of it, Bouncy. Why don't you hold off on your blanket statements until they're applicable, like say, tommorrow morning or something?

Besides, even you have to admit that the cgi was nothing spectacular. It was cliche, uninspired, and nothing that different from what we've seen for at least a few years now.

In terms of Marvel comic films, there's been a lot of compromises, (ie. Hulk, Spider-Man) but this one looks like it will be the most faithful and awesome one yet. Downey Jr. is just perfect in Stark's role. I can't imagine anyone else doing it and the scenes with the suit look great. I'm thinking this could be one of the summer's top films.
Agree, Cholo...
by SkinJob69

08:21:31 PM
Most comic-based films have been a disappointment to me(with Batman Begins being a notable exception). It's the performances that sell the film. And from what I've seen so far I'm encouraged by Downey's performance in Iron Man.

Regarding the CGI: Most CGI sucks (at least compared to models- look at Blade Runner for example- those effects still hold up and it was shot in '82!) so this is nothing new, folks. Even the excellent CGI in the Tolkien adaptations had bad moments. The human eye can tell something "isn't right" with CGI, even if the specific problem can't be pinpointed. We'll have to settle with Hollywood's dependence on inferior CGI until a) the technology improves, or b) the audience demands better effects.

The weather was awesome: sunny and cool, so were the people. Except one musician at a pub, where he complained about the Americans there, saying "Oh yeah, you say 'So what, Ireland's only half the size of Texas'." It's actually about 9% the size, but I'm Texan so that only matters to me cause I'm from The Republic. He quickly made up for it (in my mind) when he made fun of the Germans there, by complaining about how "they clap like they march." The Germans got pissed, but it was hilarious. And, I have to agree with his complaining about the Americans in general, they were mostly Yankees who bitched about everything. Ireland and the Irish are awesome in my humble opinion.

That would be awesome. Maybe they can do it in the next "Date/Epic/Spartans" fecal splash that pretends to be parody.

I grew up a big comic book fan, mostly DC though. But that spot may have been my first true geekasm. I hope this lives up, because it looks amazing so far. It really feels that they are starting to get it right with comic book adapts. Get the right actor! (Downey Jr, Norton!, Bale). The key, of course, is the delicate balance between staying true to the source material and making a real movie for non-geeks. And USE THE RIGHT STORY! All these characters have archives of great stories. While creativity is appreciated.....no need to rewrite history.

Nolan saved Batman because he returned him to the Dark Knight, not Joel Schumacer's homoerotic fantasy. Lee had good intentions with Hulk, wanting to give the character depth, but Banner's phyche should have come second to well.....HULK SMASH! So far, the new installment with Norton sounds like they'll get it right. I can't imagine Norton not giving Banner depth, while still focusing on what we want in the Hulk....total mayhem. Here's hoping that the studios realize that they will make more money out of these characters in sequels if they put the time and care into them to allow the franchises to not fall apart. The X-Men Universe is much to vast to have ended on such a sour note. That franchise would have made the studio unGodly money......had they had the patiance and care to do it right. Moviegoers very well would have supported more sequels to X-Men had it been done right......and each sequel should have been a great opportunity to introduce characters that could have stood alone in their own movies....a la Wolverine.

Because EVERYTHING looked like CGI, it looked like a shot from a fully CGI movie, whereas the rest of the spot did not, that's why people are focusing on it. Try to differentiate between "haters", and people giving valid criticism. I'm sure most here want to see this, I know I do.

That's a bad sign. And whoever that tard was, yes the average fucking screen is just fine to make that judgement (of depth and detail and anything required to give CGI a convincing edge)

Look, I actually do intend to see this movie, but you can't tell me that a b-list comic character with a c-list director and an actor who is really just being himself in a film filled with been-there-done-that cgi and cliche camera shots is generating as much attention as you think it is.

What this film has going for it is a 50 million dollar marketing campeign which exists to make you think an obvisouly generic comic book film will be the greatest thing since Tim Burton's Batman. Whatever.

given the CGI questionable quality (no matter what apologists are saying) and the lack of coherence with the rest of the images and clips we've seen so far, I'd bet it's a VR training of any sort in the movie. A PG-13 Marvel flick wouldn't show its hero blasting people trapped inside a tank with that kind of cocky attitude. Looks like an elaborate holographic simulation more than anything, like Stark uses in the comics (on a side note, he mentions ILM as the artists behind his VR training in the comics^^)
IRON MAN HAS CHOSEN TO WASTE HIS MARKETING $$

AND HERES WHY

This ad was directed to people who area already going to see the movie. For those who haven't read a comic, and have no idea who Iron Man is, this ad didn't give them any reason to see it - it looked like a crappy Transformers-lite ad, and it wont get any mainstream buzz as a result. It would have been better to introduce Tony Stark, who he is, and why he is. Instead we get a guy in a Star Trek jumpsuit saying,"oh yeah.. i can fly." He dodges a tank and blows it up with a micro-missle from his arm.

And all of America thought, "who is this new villain going around blowing up American Tanks in Bagdad?"

Dumb Ad is Dumb.

the cast is top notch. no contest there. but in the end the movie will only be as good as the director's talent. anyone who's directing a superhero movie will claim how they love/embrace the material(gotta play kissy kissy with the fans, see), but it's all just useless talks. it's the talent that counts.

now, have you seen favreau previous movies? is any of them any good? if you thought so, then i'm sure you'll love this movie. me, my hope is not so high.

I'm already psyched for this movie. The crowd I watched the Super Bowl with was not. The adults kept trying to place who Iron Man was and the consensus from the teenagers was "I'm not feelin' it." So, I agree with ArcadianDS - this was the wrong place for an FX ad and should have given people who don't know who Iron Man/Tony Stark is a reason to see the movie. The "I just finally know what I have to do." line wasn't enough.

just because Elf wasn't running in the same league doesn't mean you can't judge the people behind it.

In all fairness I think Elf lacked substance and was ugly as hell. Since I expect some substance and visual flair in Iron Man it got me legitimally worried. Besides, Favreau's silly brand of humor seems (like many said before) to give the movie a Fantastic Four flavor that worries me even more.

I'm not dissing people enjoying Elf and I'm glad you had a good time watching it. My loss. But Nolan is a brilliant director while Favreau is mediocre at best, and a Hack Pack member at worst.

I wouldn't worry about the CGI at the end. I'm sure that will clean up in the final stages of post. Unless it's a VR SIM. Then it should look a tittle crapy.

I know a lot of you will disagree, but I would love to see this done a little like the "Rocketeer". The tongue-and-cheek humor is fine if they balance it with enough menace.

Bridges is excellent at playing evil, so I'm really looking forward to RDJ and him bouncing off each other.

How many times do you need this pounded into your head? Movies are not 616 or Ultimate. They're a different dimension, so the characters and events are slightly different. You accept this in the comics without much problem, so I don't see why you can't deal with it in movies.

Maybe they should assign a number to the movie dimension, so it's more in-tune with Marvel's books. You know, like this is Earth 90210 or something...
