I've been telling people this, and I want your opinion on it as well. I loved the mist right away, however I know a lot of people didn't like it or see it. I think that it is going to be huge on DVD just the way Shawshank was. What are your thoughts?

Condon. No offense to Mr. Darabont, who is a brilliant writer, but The Mist was one of the most frustrating theatrical experiences I've had in some time. Condon is an Actor's Director, which is what Harry was advocating for all along. He even got Brendan Fraser to deliver a good perf. in G&M. I'd definitely like to see Condon return to darker material and his name excites me more than the others on the list, though there's no denying the project would be in safe hands with Guillermo. Plus, I've always wanted the del Toros to work together.

I thought THE MIST was nothing more than a badly acted, Sci-Fi Channel Piece of Shit masquerading as a feature film. Ending was laughably bad too. Tomato, TomaTOE, I guess.

Lilja's-Library dot com keeps up to date on all things King, and posted info on the Mist DVD January 23rd. Now, as cool as I think it would be to see Darabont direct Wolf Man, I dont want anything to cause him to keep pushing back The Long Walk. OR just put him to work on the (stalled? not happening anymore?) Talisman project (which should be two or three movies, not a made-for-tv project). AND, how about an update on the Abrams/Dark Tower project? Come on Harry, I know if you dig you could find SOMETHING out about these projects for us.

but wouldn't you get a similar effect by turning the color down on your TV? Is there a certain worn in grey-ish look that he's going for? Will there be a washed out mono mix of the audio? Maybe he could include a bad red-and-blue 3-D version for added kitsch? Don't get me wrong. I loved this movie and I think that this is a great idea but there's gotta be something more to this than a change in the color.

Go Frankie-D! My other choice would be Stephen Norrington, and before lots of bitches start bleating at me, let me just say it's because I feel that he's not had a chance to really make "the one" yet. And I'm not talking about that shitty wasted-concept flick with Jet Li and Jason Statham. I'm talking about a real balls-to-the-wall, darkly emotional, atmospheric, career-defining film. And I reckon he could pull this off. He's had some bad breaks, give him a chance to really step up.

As for this black and white version of THE MIST; I hope it isn't just, literally, a B&W version. I'd like to think they would colour time the movie differently, enhancing contrasts and whatnot to really give it an old-school B&W feel.
my choice
by Bloo

03:27:13 PM
would be either Darabont or Condon, both can capture atmopshere, work well with actors, deal in a period setting. Although Marshall is an interesting choice.

As for Joe Johnston, I love Johnston, he's one of my favorite "unknown" directors and you can tell he's been mentored by Spielberg but has a nice early 'Berg touch to him, but I've been holding out for him to do narnia:Voyage of the Dawn Treader

It was a good conclusion. Everyone bitches that they didn't wait long enough to decide to do a mercy kill? How long did you want the movie to stay in the car? 30 more minutes? I for one, in that situation would have done the same thing. I'd rather get shot than torn to pieces. It's a twilight zone ending that was great for the movie.

Each one would bring something totally different. I don't think I want James Mangold, the guy just doesn't do atmosphere and I think he's a bit workmanlike in his sensibilities. Same goes for Campbell. This is a project that needs a certain creative spark. I think Darabont or Condon would both be really good choices. And both seem to be actors directors, and with pedigree like this in a film an actors director would be a match made in heaven.

I love the novella (I've probably read it three or four times in the past 15 years), and while I think its original ending was creepy, it's still standard and kind of obvious. The ending of the movie is so much crueler and more unexpected that you actually wish the world had ended. It would have been a relief if a tentacle had snatched Tom Jane away to a welcome death, but instead, the movie leaves him (and the audience) with a gut-wrenching case of survivor's guilt, rather than the comfy embrace of oblivion. And you gotta admit, it took balls to push that shit through the test-screening system. I never cared for Darabont before, but I'll definitely watch his Wolfman if he ever gets the chance to make it.

Darabont

The Mist was the single best movie I saw in theaters in 2007. For me, it was the perfect throwback to what makes a horror movie good AND scary. He took it back to the storytelling. We've had all of these shock-factor based films in the past ten years or so like The Grudge or The Ring that just try to make you think you're scared because of some remotely creepy aura they create with harsh compositions and digital tricks, but it to me it's really movies like The Mist that take your fright and concern down to the character level. Darabont has never, ever disappointed me. He has my vote.

People who defend "The Mist" relentlessly assume that people have major problems with the ending? I didn't love the film. I thought the dialogue was a little too much like a book, but I let it slide. The acting was great. And the movie was decent overall. The ending didn't piss me off. We laughed on the way out on some "that was fucked up!" type shit. My main problem was the really fucking weak CGI. The warehouse scene should have been scary.but that tentacle looked bogus, and the huge flying bugs looked corny. When the animatronics of "The Thing" trump the CGI in ur movie, you got problems. If their special effects were on point, "The Mist" would have really been special. Instead it was a B Flick with bad effects and great acting.

I thought they showed them way too much. And I was still disappointed that the spiders weren't the sixteen-legged mutants from the story. I also didn't really care for the "lobster" creature near the end. Nothing beats the movie I had in my head, but I thought Darabont's film was pretty damn good.

You won't find a bigger Stephen King fan than me, and I love the ending. Hell, even Big Steve loves the ending. Just because it isn't in the book doesn't mean it doesn't make sense. I'm not saying you don't have a right to your opinion, but I think the movie ending explores the themes presented in the rest of the movie (the way the decisions one person makes in times of crisis affects everyone around him/her) much better than the novella's ending, which was your basic horror anticlimax. We've seen that ending before. I've never seen Darabont's ending before.

But jumping on every single comment of mine is getting old. I know the Boll fight was hilarious and all, but it's time to move on, buddy. You're not bringing anything to the discussion. And no I didn't throw up during The Mist, but I wanted to after that ham-fisted, dreary, non-sensical ending with that music that sounded more appropriate for Crash. Without a doubt. Loves his old-school horror, directed one of the better (if not the only good?) werewolf movies of recent years, and can crank up the tension and make good character-driven pieces, as he showed us with The Descent. All he needs is a big-budget flick like this to announce to Hollywood that he's landed.

I love Guillermo Del Toro as much as anyone, but he doesn't NEED this. I would love to see a comeback film from John Landis. And he's proved he can do scary.

I think we can all agree that Brett Ratner not directing this is cause for celebration, but am I the only one here excited about the prospect of seeing well deserved comeback?

Any of those three would create a fantastic actor showcase for the family of werewolves. Which the Wolfman basically sounded like, a family drama involving Werewolves. So one of those three please and I'll be a very contented geek who will see this film AT LEAST three times in the theater. Scout's honor.

I absolutely loved The Mist, thought it was just an incredible piece of genre movie-making with a balls-out ending that I certainly didn't see coming. And The Descent was one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long, long time. So either one of these guys I think could pull off Wolf Man with no problem. All the directors mentioned could do well, I think, but Darabont or Marshall either one could knock it out of the park. As for you haters of The Mist, what gives? The ending rocked! Great movie!

What do those directors think? That's the big question. I never understand how these things work, there's a list of directors the studio is considering. But how did they get on that list? Are they even interested? The most important factor in my mind is if the director has a passion for this project and it's not just another job for him. Someone who brings a vision to it and really wants to do this. Any of those directors could do it if they really had a fire in them for this project.

Lets all appreciate John for some fine work in the past. He did make a fine werewolf flick. He did create a fine batch of comedies. He did make the world's greatest music video for the world's most famous paedophile. All commendable. But he's a spent force. Like John Carpenter, his films were of an era and he has been struggling to keep up with fresh ideas for movies of today. Giving him WOLFMAN would be only out of the wave he still rides from the eighties and the end result, no matter how much we hate to admit it, would be only marginally better than the director who brought you a poor man's BEVERLY HILLS COP in MONEY TALKS.
The Ending was Outer Limits Crap
by RCFOM
Feb 1st, 2008
08:24:04 PM
It really felt like I just watched an Outer Limits movie. I don't have a problem with a down ending I just didn't think it fit with the characters and the movie. One thing the movie showed was that unless you went into the Mist or opened the door the creatures made no real attempt to get at the people in the Market or in the cars. The flying thing did break the window and come in but that was only because it was after the bugs and then attracted to the lights. The big tentacle pushed against the loading door but other than that no attempt was made to enter the market. Also when they got in the car the spider knew they were in the car, could see them as well and all it did was climb over the car and go away. While they were driving they either saw other beast or knew they were there but not once did they bother them. So why in the world when the minute after you ran out of gas would you want to a mercy killing instead of waiting to see what happened. Plus if the monsters did start to attack the car you could just do a killing then. It totally just felt like some tacked on dumb ending to edgy and dark when it just sucked .
I nominate Victor Salva for THE WOLFMAN.
by LoneGun

Salva is perfect for this. He wrote and directed a fantastic bogeyman flick, JEEEPERS CREEPERS, which was very much in the tradition of old-school Universal horror movies. He's also showed that he has a flair for big effects with the sequel, CREEPERS 2. And from POWDER to PEACEFUL WARRIOR, his films just look amazing and have real atmosphere. They are populated with well-rounded, real human beings. Victor Salva would bring both style and integrity to THE WOLFMAN. And he'd deliver the scares, too.

All I'm saying is that it isn't cool to just come out and challenge one of us to a fight. I don't care if it's just tounge in cheek. I don't see you challenging harry to fight because he called you 'a fucking retrad'. you get a black box for a reason that most of us will never have. So i'm just saying that you should have talked to Jarv in a more civil manager instead of asking him to fight you. I love coming on AICN, but there are people on here that I can't fucking stand sometimes, like glovedone/braff08 (even though he just got banned again), all I'm saying man is that it's not fair of you to single one of us out and yet just let someone like Harry call you out and do nothing about it to his face either. I'm done ragging on you man. It's not doing anything for you or me. I just hope in the future you think about who you are posting to. I gotta stand up for my friends no matter what as I would hope you would for yours. I appreciate you at least saying something back to me other than just pretending nothing happened. I'm trying to be civil with you. I just hope you understand my point too. I may have gone over the line, but I did it for my friend. And i would do it again if the need be.

"THE MIST" IS THE NEW "THE THING"
by jah_kingdom

I remember when "THE THING" came out it was hated. No one liked the ending, the special effects had people in an uproar and if it was at the movie theaters more than 2 months I'd be shocked. But now "THE THING" is loved and respected. "The Mist's ending blew me away. When the"Dead Can Dance" song came on the hairs on my neck stood up and I really felt the doom and hopelessness. It was one of the most memorable experiences I've had at the movies in along time. I believe time will prove me right. And for "Wolfman" I vote Norrington or Marshall. Love Landis' early movies but he's grown seriously out of touch. That easy Hollywood living has sucked out all of his creativity like Drew Barrymore can destroy a boyfriend/husbands talent.

"the wolf man" is a real classic - people will want to see this - its got a built in audience (anyone like me that grew up loving monster movies) - the cast and buzz alone will fill seats - even if its handled the wrong way and given the wrong director - the marketing for this will pull people in like moths to a porch light - even the lowest common denominators love werewolves - in other words, even if it sucks people will flock to it - i hope the studio has the balls to allow it an R rating - and "the mist" was great - best damn monster movie ive seen in many years - as someone stated above, its a lot like carpenters "the thing", it will gain even more fans in years to come

Don't get me wrong. I think he's a great director. I loved THE MIST. I just don't imagine him doing anything unique with THE WOLFMAN. Personally, I'd rather see Darabont devote his efforts to something different, perhaps a period piece, like a 1920's gangster film or even a period baseball drama. He's very versatile. For THE WOLFMAN, however, some other visionary filmmaker would be better. (Just keep Stephen Sommers as far away from it as possible.)

I kind of agree with you there. Romanek has a really cool style that would meld deliciously with Walker's words much in the same way Fincher did with Se7en. Darabont, I believe, intentionally makes his movies without any discenable style. Darabont would no doubt make a great movie, but damnit, I want to see a two hour Closer video with Benicio as a werewolf. Is that so wrong? This is why I need to stop reading about movies thirteen years before they actually come out.

I dont think darabont's right for THE WOLFMAN either it's like its too good of a match, I can't believe the other guy left, I was expecting a good film with quality makeup effects and maybe even no CGI at all. I wish people still used those techniques listed above they were all done in such different ways where as CG takes away all the need for innovation, and because of that it looks cheap. and its also because no one uses CG the right way anymore or if ever, there's only been a handful of directors that have achieved an authentic look with CG (PJackson, Speilberg, Cameron)

They stayed in the car because it was their only means of shelter. If you recall, a simple trip next door to the grocery store proved to be disasterous. A trip to a gas station (assuming they could find one in that thick fog) would be too dangerous to risk. I'm sure they though that the fog was an isolated phenomena and they wouldn't have to drive far to escape it. After that huge thing walked by, I got the feeling that the whole Earth was taken over by those things as I'm sure the characters did to. So now, since survival is no longer a realistic option, you have to look into other options: Do we wait until those things put us into a cocoon so our bodies can incubate a bunch of little spider things? Or do we finish the job quickly with a bullet? Even though you and I eventually knew how it ended, the characters did not. They lost hope and picked the lesser of two evils. As far as why they didn't stick it out in the car a bit longer, I just attribute to the pacing of the movie. The story is done now. Time to wrap it up. If Darabont stretched it out longer to show them giving up more you would have just as many people bitching about how long it took to finally end the thing. That and it would just be redundant. They gave up already, we don't need to see them do it again.

you dont' do a homage to the Thing in the first five minutes and then proceed to clobber us with the CGI equivalent of projectile vomiting. the ending of the novella was more than an anti-climax, it was the hint at a resistance point, a possible holdout against the creatures from the rift. daranbont is a hack, he thinks he has exclusive rights to Stephen King's material, read his interview with Quint (I believe) from around the time of the Mist Screening and Q an d A at the Drafthouse. talking about what he would do to some other King projects (the long walk) for example in that interview (i know people will just jump on me without reading the interview but fuck it i'm trying to actually be polite), he's a pretentious, glorified hack that is getting more and more liberal with his interpretation of kings events. 'you act like daranbont fucked your dad', interesting choice of words there, you have to wonder what kind of subconscious train of thought leads to that analogy. so, i hated the garish, disgusting CGI, and no it didn't fuck my dad but yeah it DID fuck over a movie I had been waiting for since i was about 12. all i wanted was the translation of the source material, not...this. the mist is on my bottom 10 of 2007.

was nothing more than a STUPID, inappropriate and ham-fisted attempt to make a social statement using an AWESOME stephen king story. we are not lucky we got this Mist. this is not the Mist. even the pivotal scene with the Earth Walker towards the end left much to be desired. with movies like no country absolutely nailing the translation of source material and doing it justice it's frustrating to see a purely titillating, fun, creature feature flick usurped by a dumb, middle-aged, don't get enough cardio-bleak outlook on life finale. flame me all you want or agree people, the ant hill is all yours.

the original story was pure revelry in the concept, the claustrophobia, the twilight zone atmosphere, the societal microcosm was much more of an afterthought. if FD wanted to amplify those aspects of the story and make his own interpretation about society and moral responsibility and human nature he should have mined from material than wasn't so highly regarded by the original author's fanbase.

Darabont is 2nd String At Best...
by ZombWii
Feb 2nd, 2008
08:40:30 AM
Sorry, Darabont's films are well crafted enough and all, but lacking the emotional and psychological punch that tends to take a movie from good, to great. He has a history of doing Stephen King movies and horror sequels.. 'Nuff said. The only truly great King movie was done by a director who knew a thing or two about delivering arresting visuals and baking up a good old fashioned mind-fuck....and that was Kubrick's "The Shining". Neil Marshall came to mind immediately as a good possibility, he's shown that he can do horror, and that the best special effect is tying our guts into knots with the little things. And I think he could do really well with this, if he kept the cast small, and the atmosphere claustrophobic...like the foggy soundstages of the original. But I think the director I'd love to see do it is Marc Forester. (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, Stay). He gets great performances out of his actors, he can deliver arresting visuals, as well as handle complex material beautifully. Most importantly, he makes me believe. But of course, it looks like he's doing the new Bond.

" but lacking the emotional and psychological punch that tends to take a movie from good, to great."
you really believe this? Shawshank redemption has of the biggest emotional punches I've ever seen! The Green Mile, holy shit it's like a punch to the chest. The Mist is able to make you hurt with the characters and doesn't rely on 30 minutes of giving you full backstory. How can you say that these movies don't capture King's spirit? I've been a huge King fan all my life and Darabont is the only director that I believe has been able to capture the spirit and heart of King's work.
have you ever heard of mick garris?

King might like him, but none of his fans do. You might here one or two people that like the stand, but Mick also doesn't understand that TV is not the forum for Stephen King. Did you see Desperation? One of King's scariest work, and yet the movie looked like shit

there is an unmistakable, frumpy, 70s-90s era feel that characterizes kings work and in a way the stand captures this, in brief moments, pretty well. keep in ming SK has described much of his own work as "the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and Fries", so in a way they're fun...in a way they're also pretty cheesy and bad...but you have to respect the effort to follow the book relatively closely

stuff like christine, pet sematary, a lot of the character development in the stand, short works like riding the bullet and the mist but also stuff like word processor of the gods, rage, the jaunt...a frumpy element, like a bad 90s haircut, but an awesome energy, and not everything either by any means

at least by the literary world. I mean he has such a huge fan base(me being one of them) and he's put out so much stuff that is just increadible and yet so many people call him a 'hack' and think of him as unimportant. I'm sure that his legacy will live much longer than most of the flash in the pan writers of this century.

Thomas Jane's acting in the end was on par with the Vader scream. Even the ending wasn't some absurdly tacked-on stunt, you really think they'd go from out of gas to mass suicide THAT quickly?? REALLY?! The lack of a soundtrack also made it BORING. Yeah, it was very TV movie.

!SPOILERS! You don't think that they would be running the suicide scenario in their heads while they were driving around for however many hours? Or do you think they were chatting it up the whole ride, with their minds on something else? I'd imagine that would be a pretty awkward drive after that whole situation lol. Do you think the giant fucking monster just walking around freely encouraged them during that drive? Kudos to Frank for having balls. PS I have never seen a reaction to any film moment like miss Carmody (SP?) getting shot, during a non opening weekend geek showing of a film. More kudos.

The action sequences are cool. When the monsters attack THE MIST is good. When they're not all we can see is the actors' awful acting, especially Thomas Jane's. The ending should have been heart wrenching, but Darabont's decision to cut away during the mercy kills was a big mistake. Also, was Jane's awful acting supposed to kill the audience too? Because his inability to produce a single genuine emotion is what ruined the ending. His giant sob screams were too funny to be heartbreaking, and having the military pass by should've been a bigger reveal, a bigger camera shot. That was another of Darabont's mistakes. This black and white version he's planning, if all it is is the movie in black and white then people will just be paying double for the DVD when they can just just change the color setting on their televisions.

The Michael Bay of the written word. Ten percent seriously cool shit mixed in with ninety percent annoyingly half-baked dialogue, lame characterizations, empty metaphysical moments, 2 cups of cliche, and of course some overly sadomasochistic torture and blood-letting. It's certainly not all bad, but only about 1 in 3 books is worth reading. I think I liked "Everything's Eventual" best...let's face it, most of his ideas aren't good enough to hold up for 400 pages. As for movies...wasn't it The Onion or someone who did an article discussing the worst movies that everyone (for some reason) seems to love? I think Shawshank topped the list, melodramatic clap-trap that lets you root for the prisoners and "stick it to the man." And The Green Mile, oh please..that turd goes on and on and on...it's To Kill A Mockingbird with a slapdash of King's metaphysical/Neo-Christian tomfoolery but obviously lacking Mockingbird's authenticity. Take away Tom Hanks, and half the people who love the movie wouldn't give it a second thought. (the Hanks factor) Darabont's output is workman like. He's average. If you've got a decent script and $25-40 million to drop on a one-off project, then Darabont is a pretty good choice. If you want a chance at greatness, a possible franchise or maybe even a few awards...then you need a craftsman. Darabont is good for Creature From The Black Lagoon. (PS I thought 1408 was quite good as a movie, but even it borrows liberally from The Shining.)

the Michael bay of written word? Are you kidding? Lame characterizations? Stephen King is one of the greatest character writers of our time. Roland and the Dark Tower, the Stand, It, even in his short stories he writes beautiful characters. As for Shawshank you couldn't be more wrong. It's not about 'stick it to the man'. Andy is innocent of murder and wants nothing more than to be free. Red knows what he did wrong, but he's an old man who has lost any hope of living. Yes there are a lot of horrible people out in the world who deserve to spend their lives in jail. However there are some who deserve a second chance and can learn from their mistakes and become good people. Isn't that the whole point of the rehabilitation process. And, esp in that time period, there were a lot of corrupt prisons and the thing about Andy is that he never loses hope no matter what happens to him and he makes it out. It's a story about hope, friendship, and the beauty of the human spirit. AS for Green Mile, how is it like To Kill a Mockingbird? Please explain. Yes there is a black man in it convicted of something he didn't do but that all the similarities. I don't remember when Paul fell out of the old oak tree and got rescued by Boo Radley do you? The Green Mile is a beautiful movie that is a Christ allegory. It's also a movie that shows how each of us pay for our sins in our own way and how we have to live with our actions that will haunt us our whole lives. I'm sorry but you are either too cynical to appreciate beauty or you can't appreciate good film. I'd like your example of a movie that captures these themes that you think is better and not just as you put it "a melodramatic clap-trap"

So Tom Hank's character isn't Atticus Finch/Scout (the morally centered/nostalgic narrator) rolled into one? Coffey isn't Boo Radley and Tom Robinson (Black, innocent, uneducated, means well, man-child who ends up dying anyways) rolled into one? The frame work is there, King just added crap like Mr. Jingles. As for an example of something I think does a better job of covering the whole living with our sins material...How about any episode of My Name Is Earl. It even has a man-child, Randy and Christ figure in Darnell. Or, 21 Grams?
I think you are reading too much into it
by Kloipy
Feb 3rd, 2008

It's a completely different story. If you want you can read all that into almost any movie. Luke skywalker is Atticus Finch, Darth Vadar is Tom Robinson because it turns out he was good all along, people just misunderstand him! The part where luke gets his hand cut off it's like the part when Jem fell out of the tree and broke her arm. See it's easy

I would LOVE Darabond, Landis and Marshall to do this. That said this progect needed an off the wall choice. That's why the original director was perfect for this. these guys have most of them played with genre before so i'm afraid they would go the clichés root. my first choice would be the french director that did the Monnica Belucci rape film. A genius that can outcreep even David Lynch himself.
