The trailer was unintentionally funny, which is never a good sign. And using Sabbath's Iron Man? sometimes the obvious is not the best direction to go. Still, even though I never read Iron Man as a kid, I read up on the character and he sounds a fair bit more interesting and suitable for the movie treatment than Hulk or Superman.
I think I'm in the obscure minority on this one
by Gwai Lo

01:50:42 PM
But I was not terribly excited about the Iron Man trailer, except for the one clip of him breaking the sound barrier. I thought the use of Black Sabbath was banal, that Downey just barely eked out enough of his charisma to pull off some really weak dialog (the reporter asking him about his nicknames, the MySpace bit in the desert) and the last robotic sounding "I am Ironman" audio byte was just silly. I don't think any of Jon Favreau's directorial output is any good so far. But I am still cautiously optimistic, hoping for a B+ superhero picture. The cast is great, almost everything looks good, but the way they cut the trailer got me a little bit more worried than I had been. Who cares, I'm getting the Dark Knight next summer so I have nothing to complain about as far as superhero films go.

The robotic sounding clip is FROM the Sabbath song, which I doubt they will use in the film. I think you're right about being in the minority on this one. I feel more confident about this movie rocking than any other hero flick in recent memory (DK looks amazing too, but I give Batman Begins no more than a "B")

Or Jeebus that this movie is awesome. I have absolutely geeked out over every trailer and shot that's so far been released. I'd be actually pissed if the movie turns out average. Like in a Godzilla 1998 or Batman & Robin "I spent money to see this" type of way.

I never said those pieces of ass dribble were average. In fact, they pissed me off because of their complete shittyness. Batman & Robin was gay, not in the pejorative sense, it was actually gay and Batman should never actually be gay. Godzilla caused anal leakage. The point of this hyperbole is to highlight what my reaction will be if Iron Man is garbage too. Also, go Giants! Everything Boston sucks.

It would be like using Eminem's Superman song in the Superman Returns trailer. Or using Surfing With the Alien for the Rise of the Silver Surfer trailer. All personal attachments you have to popular music aside, it's way classier to use original score. Now excuse me while I go work on a Hernan Cortes biopic so someone can get around to using Neil Young's Cortez the Killer in a movie.

that there are TOO many superhero movies out there. I remember growing up just wishing to see the X-men, spiderman, any hero in a huge movie that did it justice. But now there is a new one out every other month. It's just like how Scream ruined horror movies, because after it came out, there was a huge appeal to make those kinds of movies. Now that magic of seeing your comic heros on the screen has died. It's just another movie to get only mildly excited about. Soon they will be scraping the barrel to make the next superhero movie.

I imagine it would take great restraint NOT to use Sabbath, the most obvious piece of music they would have come up with for a trailer. But whatever, it's a trailer, all I'm saying is that the trailer didn't sell me on a movie I'm already pretty much sold on. I'll just be disappointed if they use Sabbath in the actual film. Like he's trying to come up with a name, and all of a sudden that song comes on the radio. That would drop the movie a whole letter grade for me.

How many MORE images from this film can be released and be SO utterly badass? This is the first official photo that anyone could describe as badass. The media have only been given a small handful of pictures from the movie, and until now, they have all been shots that show no effects work and are focused on the actors, not the action, and have been devoid of style or mood, much less the single most important element to sell IRON MAN to the mass mainstream: excitement. The advance publicity on this project, with the exception of the show put on at Comic Con, has been practically absent up to now. For the sake of everything that Marvel has staked in this project, the Super Bowl spot is going to need to hold nothing back in presenting IRON MAN to the world.

I've heard from a very reliable's source's cousin's neighbor that one suit in Iron Man DOES IN FACT have nipples.

But they learned from watching Batman vs. The Terminator that people get pissed if there's no reason for nipples on a suit. Sooooooooo....

They made NIPPLES that are actually MISSILES! It's just like Venus from Mazinger Z (Tranzor Z in the US).

Tony will yell out "Go, go, GADGET TITTY MISSILES!", and they'll launch going peeeeeeeeeewwwwwwrrrrr all the way until they hit their mark. Not only are these TITTY MISSILES, but they're HEAT SEEKING TITTY MISSILES!!!!!!!!!!

almost every Marvel flick so far was from the same mold: "half-baked origin story with a touch of fantasy/science-fiction to justify the hero's abilities". They completely failed to make GENRE movies, totally forgetting that the original comics were heavily influenced by genre movies themselves.

Where are the sci-fi concepts in the FF movies? Where is the political aspect in X-Men? Where are the courtroom drama and the reflexion about Justice in DareDevil?

Iron Man needs to rely heavily on superior tech and espionage, 2 major points they scrapped so far in the teasers in favor of lame jokes. That's why I'm eagerly anticipating the real trailer. If the take the funny route again I'd be really pissed.

This movie is not going to do that well. It might have a decent opening weekend, but c'mon. Nobody really knows who Iron Man is. And if they do, most people only know him as a guy dressed in iron. No matter how you slice it, for the majority of movie goers, this sounds ridiculous. I am excited and going to see it, but I will be surprised if this is going to be a huge box office blockbuster. The first trailer I saw was great, until the damn Iron Man song came on. Can you be more cheesy? That ruined it for me. And it ruined it for everyone I was with who saw it. In fact, a lot of people in the theatre started laughing, and NOT in a good way. So it's already off to a bad start.

. . . It wasn't a bad decision to use the Iron Man song in the trailer, but they used it all wrong. They should have started with the cool, rapid bass riff and then synched up the all-too-familiar part with the reveal of the title at the end. Using that part of the song as he first busts through the door was just too cheesy. The trailer still rocks though.

and yet it was the closest to an actual comic book movie than has ever been done, it actually took the material seriously instead of making constant jokes about it, it had more depth to it than most comic book movies have. Yes I hated the Hulk Poodle part, but I didn't think it was a bad movie. At least it tried to give something that came from a comic book (which a lot of people think are just stupid kid books) and try to give it a serious angle to show that they aren't just for children. And yet people show up in droves for shit like Rise of the Silver Surfer

In a way, we're to blame for the glut of superhero movies
by finky089
Feb 1st, 2008
03:33:51 PM
Like Kloipy, I would have killed for comic book characters to be turned into movies when I was growing up in the 80's. Sure, we had a little Superman, but nothing big-budget until Burton brought us Batman in '89.

I remember for years and years, hoping somebody (Cameron) was going to do the Spiderman movie. It seemed like it was never going to happen.

And, seeing what superhero movies we did get in the late-80's (Punisher, Captain America, FF - or was that very early 90's?), it's probably good that they didn't try to make many others.

But what happened is that those of us who wantd to see those films that we never got finally grew up, got disposable income, and even relatively influentially placed jobs in the entertainment world. And the movies we wanted to see growing up started getting written, produced, and increasingly popular.

I don't begrudge how far we've come or even where we're at right now, but I do think we're reaping what we sowed. We just didn't know guys like Ratner or Singer, or whoever you pick were going to come along and make it all so polarizing.

I rented it in the very early 90's, I guess, but it was so bad I purged most of it from my brain. All I really remember is the Red Skull's mask looking so shitty, it shoulda been brown.

If I remember correctly, the teaser poster for the movie was great, with just Cap's iconic sheild on a simple black background.

Sad, but true. But it's why the studios keep pushing everything from old TV show remakes to Transformers to direct to DVD Avenger movies. They know people are going to spend money on it. And not all of it's terrible. But they know if they don't do it, someone else will make their bucks. Our nostalgia and love of fantasy/comics/whatever you want to call it is being pimped out.

But I hate to be a downer. So, I'll spin it by saying, it's cool that people are at least TRYING to make good movies (most of the time), even if the ones financing them are really just doing it for the money. I'll still take all the Catwomen, FF's, Ghost Riders, and Daredevils (ok, I could really do without Catwoman) along with the recent Batmans, Spidermans, Hellboys, and the upcoming Watchmen flick over having almost none of it at all.

That's the poster, Finky!

I was under the impression that the "iron man" of the Sabbath song was a returning Vietnam vet - the "changing to steel..." being a metaphor for alienation. Paranoid being a pretty obvious anti-war album, with a theme of alienation throughout. But, damn, I'm looking forward to this movie. Been an Iron Man fan for 30 years. Told my daughter I'd only see it 2-3 times in the theatre if it stinks. Will see it 'til I run out of money if it's good... :) Cheers, BF

"superhero" movies within ten years of its release (bested only by Burton's Batman.) Nothing against TMNT, but watch it today and it's hard to say whether it's even as "good" as Ghost Rider. Maybe a little better, but the Turtle suits are a little hard to get past these days.

I confess to not seeing the new TMNT movie that came out last spring, but from what I saw in the trailers, I wasn't terribly impressed. At least, not enough to pay for it.

To all the haters, give me a break. This movie has a timeless feel to it. On paper, perhaps the Sabbath song "wouldn't" work, but in reality, it absolutely did. I had no desire to see Iron Man, until that trailer. Downey was dead on and the humor and execution were outstanding. This is going to destroy. Each shot is impeccably framed, iconic. I'm looking forward to this far more that Dark Knight, which is the sequel to a poorly shot film that lapsed in focus.

Which lets face it, unless your getting some Harry younger poon in your life you still like geek movies. 08 is turning out to be a much better year then 07 (seen all the Oscar noms and still thinking poop). But I just saw the trailer for Batman Begins Again, after the fact, and I feel that if it turns out to be good (which lets face it, with a comic book/superhero movies its always 50/50), Candy man himself Heath Bar Ledger could end up with a possible Oscar nom (little chance of a win (i mean Juno got Oscar noms and since Crash (maybe $1,000,000 baby) they've pretty much jumped the shark)). But I just want to stake my claim here and now. Just somewhere besides the drunken ramblings to my dog. I doubt we'll see all thirty version in the movie. I hope we don't, anyway. Some of Iron Man's armors were UGLY. That white and red West Coast Avengers one was terrible! The classic one that had the NOSE on it was pretty fugly, too.

it looks like they're just fooling around with the character. Downey has a good chance to pull a Jack Sparrow with that one and achieve the same kind of popularity (at last!) thet Depp earned by going Disney... BUT the way they're blending 60's iconic stuff (that haven't aged well, see the Mk.I armor...) and the most recent kind of humor (the cynicism peppered with pop culture references à la Shrek) seems a bit off the mark to me. I mean, the original Stark is a mysoginistic control freak whose bad mood is tempered by idealistic views toward warfare, and a knack for challenging the authority. Not a single bit of cynicism or warmongering attitude...

Here's an interview of the two so-called Children of FUCKIN MEN "writers" who penned the movie. Once again their claims are a bit frightening: http://tinyurl.com/3bn5ej

My point was: they're trying to appeal as much to the classic fans (with the highly publicized Mk.I whose obsolescence can be only enjoyed by the long-time readers - most of the people I know just find it ridiculous because of their lack of knowledge of ol'Shellhead) as to the kids/teens with the cheesy humor (the Da Vinci line, Stark's failed repulsor testing à la George of the jungle) and pop references that will age terribly once the film is out (the myspace line is just terrible and spoiled the rest of the scene - the gang sign joke at least WAS funny...).

That's a mixed bag to me. I loved some parts (the shot of Downey brooding alone in his lab in the international teaser was dead on) but the blending of classic iconic stuff to lure in the fans and unnecessary humor reeks of demagogy and marketing strategy more than coherent filmmaking. Of course they need to market it wisely to cover their $200 million budget but then it raises another question: why give 200 fucking millions to an amateur like Favreau in the first place? The guy has no action credit and his previous films are seriously lacking both depth and visual flair. From what I read so far I understand HE is the one who was lobbying for a light-hearted flick, and forced his brand of humor into it after failing to develop a comedic version of Captain America. Is this a good sign?

they're always cited as being the writers of CoM while they wrote the rejected draft. So, we're supposed to be hyped by a false bit of information (in short: PR bullshit) and since these guys have no other relevant experience in screenwriting to be judged upon (First Snow was released in USA and a fistful of countries only) we can't do anything but pray, or fall for the boldface lie regarding their involvement with Cuaron's flick.

I'm not saying they're bad writers, what I'm saying is that the way their work has been presented to us so far is completely dishonest. Not to say fishy.

that the movie doesn't end with Stark fighting...whoever...without his armor. You know, typically the hero either takes off his armor, throws down his weapon, removes his power ring, etc, etc. Just rediculous. Please leave the suit on him! Even if it is at "21%" effectiveness, (quoted in a sexy female computer voice..."Tony, power reserves are down to 21-percent...") just leave the god damn thing on! Putting a dude in an expensive suit in front of expensive cars and motorcycles seems like the movie is just trying to be flashy and shit. Then again, it's got Robert Downy so they've got my ass in a seat so what do they care?
So he turns into Bumblebee then..........

However film still looks good. But please can we have a picture of Iron Man doing something, rather than tony Stark trying on gloves?

Looked a little CG, but I really dig the way the armor unfolds and retracts as needed. Good little commercial, and lots of new stuff

you guys piss on ratner all the time(which is justified, mind you), but ironman directed by the guy who did elf was going to be great??? so he wrote a decent romantic comedy a decade ago, but what have favreau directed so far that make you think this is gonna be anything other than mediocre??
