At least Ally McBeal had a cute waif in the starring role, and had musical guests like Al Green and Berry White, not George Michael.

I'd be tempted to watch to see Julie Gonzalo and that chick from Species but, on the whole, this sounds a little too cloying.

Ues, the commercials that aired two months ago made this seem like Ally McBeal with the apparent hallucinations and obscure musical icon interludes. You may still have that impression if you haven;t watched ABC since the strike began.

But as Not Judy Wice wrote over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ jumptheshark/message/69809 : "Being a fan of the offbeat spirtuality of "Joan Of Arcadia" and "Saving Grace" and the quirky fantasy of "Pushing Daisies" and "Wonderfalls," I intend to at least check this out with an open mind and give it a chance to win me over."

Why is an Eli Stone talkback up and no "Lost" yet? As Not jusy Wice went on to write in the spirit of cross-promotion:

"Oh, and an homage/shout out to the fan-kids over at Ain't It Cool News who kept the talkback from the "Lost" third season finale alive for over eight months and 10,500 comments. Now that's dedication!"

Wonderfalls

I like the Portland Oregonian pointing out that they liked Wonderfalls better. There were two things that I thought about when I first saw the commercials. One as that this was very similar to Wonderfalls, except that they kept the 'higher power' anonymous while this show was going with a definite Judaeo-Christian God. The second was that the song they were using has nothing to do with religion. At least I got a laugh explaining to someone the rest of the lyrics to the song.

Networks are still pulling the solo main character who is supposed to warm our hearts with CGI induced vivid dream sequences? STILL? They're still trying to pretend that is new and not a rehash of every other show from the 90s? I guess ABC finally built a computer to mash-up old TV shows and pretend they're new. That eliminates writers.

Mildly entertaining, despite its promotion of one of the MOST DANGEROUS Urban Myths/Conspiracy Theories out there right now that Thimerosal in vaccines causes or contributes to Autism. This claim has been thoroughly debunked by science, yet millions of parents have been deceived into thinking they can't truth medical science or necessary life-saving vaccines. At least at the end, they gave the website of a legitimate source for more information on Autism research. But you add to this further perpetuating of the Thimerosal myth the whole acupuncture mumbo jumbo and that super broad, new agey (to the point of meaninglessness) definition of god as a sunset, blah, blah, blah, and this episode is going to piss off scientists and skeptics everywhere. Well, at least Eli Stone is an atheist, so maybe future episodes will have been written by writers who aren't going to make him a strawman atheist and really balance out the spiritual interpretation with the more scientific interpretation.

OK, I love Pushing Daisies and I am currently watching episode 8 of Wonderfalls on my iPod. This show is not like everything else in the world. It doesn't compare well to anything, even Joan Of Arcadia or Wonderfalls where the lead may be talking to God or just nuts. On the surface, that may seem the case, but I think this show may go places the other two never would have. And, it doesn't hurt to have Lost as a lead-in....unless your show is called Invasion!

...how so many other good/great quirky-shows (Wonderfalls, American Gothic, Invasion, Keen Eddie, Freaks 'n Geeks, etc.) might have had the chance to get an audience & stayed alive if they were launched in a similar, starved-for-new-content environment. I think this show will benefit greatly from the fact it was launched during the strike. I'll bet the ratings will be pretty good. Not great, but 10X more than if it was launched against, say, the CBS Monday night lineup.
Ratings for first episode are mixed

From VARIETY:

"Eli Stone": Ratings verdict is mixed

"Lost" stomped all over the competish in its return to ABC's sked on Thursday. "Eli Stone" had a harder time of it in its debut.

The 9 p.m. fourth season premiere seg drew 16.1 million viewers and 6.7 rating/16 share in the adults 18-49 demo, per Nielsen prelims. The 8 p.m. "Lost" clip show did a healthy 13.1 million 4.9/13 in the key demo.

"Lost's" premiere ratings were down from last season's opener (18.8 million, 7.7/19), but we all know last night's numbers will balloon when DVR viewing sources are factored in week after next.

Kind of a mixed bag for the 10 p.m. bow of ABC's dramedy "Eli Stone." The well-reviewed drama about an idealistic lawyer who begins to realize that he's a prophet had a hard time hanging on to "Lost's" coattails. It opened to 11.6 million viewers and 4.2/11 in 18-49. Not great, but not terrible either, and it is an improvement over the perf of "Lost" companion "The Nine" last season.

Suprisingly entertaining

I watched the debate tonight on CNN, then watched the post debate stuff. Then I wasn't in the mood for Lost. So, I decided to watch Eli Stone. I was suprised that I liked it. It isn't on par with Pushing Daisies. If Daisies is an A+ then Eli Stone is at least right now a B-. But it felt good to watch. I thought about it and couldn't tell you why it felt good, because as a whole it should have sucked, but it didn't. Maybe after the debate I just wanted to see a story of someone returning to their ideals and doing the right thing. Guess that appealed to me. Oh, and my brother is autistic. And it was fun to hear George Michael singing again.

During the period in which Autism was know to increase, the following events took place in our world:

over 100 space launches from shuttles to rockets to satellite boosters. we've punched too many holes in our ozone and now our kids are retardos.

Two words: American Idol

The Clintons - two Bill Clinton Presidential Terms, Hillary in congress, and now both of them back on the Presidential campaign trail.

Babylon 5 - either as new episodes, spin off mini-series, or rebroadcast syndications, Babylon 5 thrived as autism increased in number. This cannot be ignored.

And now I offer you a perfect moment of retardo. BLLEEEARGHGLG!
