We'd better get some kind of explanation soon about how this is different from The X-Files. Assuming it is, in fact, different from The X-Files.

Why? Because he is incredibly successful, and his shows are smart, suspenseful, and have great mysteries?

I agree this sounds like The X Files, but I am willing to give the dude a shot.

He hasn't produced anything really awful. Alias was OK, it just wasn't my kind of show. Lost, even though I have up on it shortly into season 2, isn't a bad show. Again, it just went in a direction I didn't care for. MI:3 was probably better than I give it credit for, because I utterly cannot stand Tom Cruise. So while Abrams hasn't impressed me, he hasn't turned me off either.
Wait, is that what they'd PAY ME to watch?

Because you'd have to pay me to watch Star Trek Enterprise from beginning to end.

By the way, what happened to them NOT using the name "Star Trek" in the show's title. As I recall, B&B made a big deal about the show being just "Enterprise" without the Star Trek name on it. Now, all of a sudden, it's got Trek all over the place.

Why not just make this an X-Files spin-off?

I'm serious -- just re-label it The X-Files: Fringe. They could even have AD Skinner appear every now and then.

It will probably involve lots of fake news footage of strange phenomena happening throughout the world, and web sites for mysterious fake corporations. (I am being sarcastic; I have become very weary of the ARG gimmick, which Bad Robot has overplayed. But we all know Fringe is going to get this treatment.)

(starring Patrick Stewart) from the UK. Ashley Jensen played the female lead and was the best thing about it - apart from that it was a complete failure. But this must be a remake - or a rip-off. Their choice. But if Gallagher isn't in the credits he should be having a chat.

between Fringe and X-Files is that the investigators are completely mainstream and that everyone in the country is aware of paranormal phenomenon, like they're aware of everyday crime. I'm also guessing that, in keeping with JJ Abrams MO, every episode will be tied into a greater mythology.

I love Lost, its an incredibly entertaining show. I love how they build the mythology, and characters. The rest of JJs stuff is mediocre, however. Gave Alias many chances, watched a whole four seasons before I realized it wasn't worth my time.
I just hope John Noble gets a better written character

What's with all these Brits and Aussies starring as Americans on TV? The trend is spreading. What's the count now? Hugh Laurie on House, Lena Headey on Terminator, Dominic West on The Wire, Kevin McKidd on (the late) Journeyman, Michelle Ryan on (the late?) Bionic Woman, Yvonne Strahovski on Chuck, Linus Roache on Law & Order... anybody got more?

but I just finished watching all of the short-lived Odyssey 5 - anyone else think that the show was pretty damn great? Cast Peter Weller in something right now! And I'll watch most things Abrams throws at me (also, as a huge x-files nerd, I'll take any rip-off I can get).

Doesn't mean it is anything like the X-Files. Many shows have similiar premises, but a very different shows. The X Files itself is very similiar to many shows from the 70s and 80s, but the tone was very different.

Just look at all the sitcoms we have had over the last ten years with the premise of "schlub of a guy with a hot wife" and how very different they were...... Ummmm.... Nevermind.
BTW, how can you hate JJ Abrams?

The guy brought us Alias and Lost. Those shows are two of the best shows in the last decade. Even when Alias rebooted too much, it was better than most of the action shows.

"Alias" started out fantastic, but it shortly became clear that he was making it up as he went along. Knowing this, there was no need to jump on the "Lost" bandwagon, and from what I can tell I made the right call. I won't condemn his new projects before the fact, but my expectations are not as high as they could be.

Well, maybe not. I also think it's unfair to compare beyond a certain degree, but it does sound like the same general premise. It's never stopped anyone from making dozens of different shows based in a law firm, or a hospital or in the old west, or on a spaceship, or in a nuclear family, or about fixing your home, or about antiquing, or about coming of age, or about.....

I think Alias' problem was that they rebooted too much to gain an audience. It started with the Super Bowl episode. They needed a big splash for the exposure. So they decided to take down SD-6 which not only make a big splash, but also allow new viewers to not have to spend too much time to catch up. The problem is due to a long post Super Bowl celebration, that Alias episode had horrible ratings.

The two years later thing was botched just that he realized he let SD-6 go too quickly and tried to clone it and poorly. And Melissa George was just so horrible.

Other misteps were beyond Abrams' control. If he knew Lena Olin would make ridiculous salary demands, he would have gone with another actress. Losing Irena Dervecco really took away one of the biggest storylines.

Also, the cliffhanger where Syndey finds out that Jack "killed" Irena was needed to be revamped because ABC gave marching orders to eliminate story arches and focus on self contained episodes to attract new viewers. Originally, the papers that Syndey found was related to Project Christmas (probably that Syndney was part of that training operation).

Abrams did make some missteps like neutering Arvin Sloane, dumping Will Tippin, "killing" Vaughn (kinda out of Abrams' control since it was partly done because of the break up of Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan), etc. I do think he has learned from his mistake and most of his reboots on Lost have been for the better. Granted it may have taken him to delegate responsibilities to get that done (although he did get writing credits on 16 of the episodes last year).
