I see Harry's point regarding The Nines
by Jonah Echo
Jan 29th, 2008
02:27:30 PM
I saw this just recently, having anticipated it for a while due to some positive reviews floating around here back last spring or fall. While it seems like a cop-out for Harry to say he isnt sure if he likes it, I absolutely understand where he is coming from. The Nines plays like one of those "mind puzzle" movies, not unlike Donnie Darko and while it does manage to wrap all it's disparate pieces together in a crunchy metaphysical shell, the whole thing feels inconsequential when its done. Its alot of fun to watch, though. Ryan Reynolds gives the only tolerable performance of his career, and its always good to see Hope Davis and David Denham (Roy from the Office also has a cameo). The story follows three segments, each with a guy played by reynolds as the protagonist. John August's screenplay keeps trying to tease us with bizarre happenings (at one point while Reynolds is high on crack, he calls the hospital to ask if its a problem he doesn't have a belly button.) At the same time, the story actually reveals its hand, or most of it anyway, after the second segment and that eliminates most of the suspense and interest of the third segment. If you go into it expecting a fun, clever little indie with some light-hearted scifi wierdness, you probably won't be dissapointed. Expect the next Donnie Darko, or Memento and you probably will be. Agust also did the movie Go, and this one definitely bears alot of that one's personality.

Why do DVD covers suck so much?
by Knuckleduster
Jan 29th, 2008
03:52:20 PM
In the past few years, we've seen some pretty cool film posters, but for some reason so many of the DVD covers suck. Maybe it's just a UK thing. Has anyone seen the Region 2 DVD cover of The Fountain? It's terrible. Looks like a cheap 80's fantasy film. And remember that awesome, trippy poster for The Prestige? But somehow the DVD cover is just lame and unoriginal. Worst yet is the Region 2 cover for The New World. Looks plastic, like it belongs to The New World: The Game. So sad.

I have the same problem with lame DVD covers. It all stems from the amazing poster for "Rushmore" (my favorite film). For the initial DVD release, some genius decided to take that photo, completely delete all of the faces in the background, and (badly) replace Max Fischer's head from a different photo. The head is at the wrong angle and the size is off. I have no idea why they felt the need to change it.

DVD covers and why they don't use poster art
by moondoggy2u
Jan 29th, 2008
05:47:12 PM
I wonder if the artists who design Theater poster art get some sort of "per poster" deal or something. Could that explain why every single film's dvd cover art is different from the better-designed theater poster art? You know, so studios avoid having to pay extra or something?

Well, arent theater posters really expensive? Maybe part of the expense is the design that goes into them. DVDs, on the other hand, always use instant photoshop. Just look at Star Wars as en example.

I wish someone could answer this because its a question I've always had, myself. Why do DVDs always use inferior photoshop instead of the superior Theatrical posters?

Well here's a theory...
by EvilGeek1
Jan 29th, 2008
06:06:28 PM
I tear stubs in a cinema. Not exactly glamorous, but fuck it. All our posters are landscape and I'm assuming it's the same stateside. The picture would look stupid if you put it into portrait. It would look compacted and the words would be most likely illegible. The major studios have their own dvd design and distribution sector. Maybe they just have bad taste...

Right At Your Door is fuckin' terrifying
by SoylentMean
Jan 29th, 2008
06:13:08 PM
Why the hell didn't it get a theatrical release? I'd venture to guess that it's the logical conclusion that if any such dirty bomb(s) were to be set off in our country that the culprits would be the whack-a-do Islamic Fundamentalists (we gotta get these folks together with the Baptists, don't y'all think?). Because we're supposed to think that these people are just misunderstood, that we need to love them. Whatever, same reason why all the Iraq war related films tanked at the box office(The Kingdom was fuckin' brilliant).

Right At Your Door is as jolting as The Day After or Miracle Mile, and it's a good lesson. If the shit hits the fan-do the exact opposite of what your government tells you. At that point you are expendable. Guess what, you already are.

I'm assuming your are from the UK since you say your posters are landscape. Those are "quads" and are I think only used in the UK. The rest of the world uses "One Sheets" that are portrait sizes.

My theory for the DVD covers is that the studios feel the need to make it more Joe Six Pack friendly to sell more DVDs. Dumb it down really.

I design posters and they are always used on the DVD releases, saves money for the producer and it's what people recognize.

There are some sites that feature alternative cover art for your DVDs, I used to do some for dvdcoverart.com before they got shut down by Disney and the owner sued. Those of us left began contributing to a new site that you could probably find without much trouble.

As for The Keep. A brand spanking new print was shown in England on saturday with some of the cast and Michael Mann attending. Since they went through the trouble of remastering the film I would assume that a DVD release wouldn't be too far behind.

British Movie THREADS versus ABC's Movie THE DAY AFTER

Back in the 1980's I watched and VHS taped THREADS off of PBS TV. I thought it was superior to THE DAY AFTER. However the USA media circus selling machine acted like TDA was the end all, no mention of THREADS. I got in trouble with the wifey for putting THREADS on her home-made copy of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. Man, that made for an odd double feature tape. I think I still have that VHS tape somewhere. The tape speed must have been at the worst possible resolution, not SP, or LP, most likely SLP.

Spider-Man 3 - some dumb featurettes. Great commentary, though. Pirates - NO commentary. One okay feature. Transformers - okay commentary (would have liked a cast commentary), and some good features.

I thought Bug was pretty damn good, and the guy certainly knows how to build a great atmosphere for horror. I think he'd be a great fit for Wolfman.

But a bit dated today, and not as scary as it was in 1984. That's a movie we need a remake of, so we can update the "chilling" effect and make it even more creepier and depressing.
THE KEEP issues...

I have a laser-to-dvd copy that "keeps" me happy for now. But from what I have heard, there are a lot of hands stretched out wanting $$$ from a dvd release. I also read that Mann doesn't really like the film. The studio interfered throuout the whole production and forced Mann to give the movie to a studio editor to cut out a LOT of footage and get the running time down. Another issue as well is the slowness of Paramount to release any back-catologue titles. If The Keep was a Warner Bros. or New Line film. I assume we would have had 3 version by now.

It's one of the best movies EVER. I cannot name another film that is so funny, so intellectually ambitious, uplifting in purpose, perfectly executed and wholly satisfying as this masterpiece. I don't even think the makers of the film were intending to make a "great" film. But then neither were the makers of CASABLANCA... Sometimes these things just happen. Enjoy it when they do.
