After all this is the same town that turn Paris Hilton into a household name, and routinely gives blank checks to any director who can produce even ONE hit show/film. The days when directors would try to take the material to a higher level are OVER! Who needs character development, story or a hint of artistry when all it takes to appeal to the typical American are some tits and CGI explosions. Flames on Optimus, Shia as Indy Jr. , and O.C. It's a movie based on a militaristic toy commercial from the '80s, it's from the director of the fucking MUMMY who has never and will never direct a good movie, but only now that they hired a guy whose name you think "sounds gay" do you decide it might not be a good movie? Nice detective skills there, Columbo.

If you grew up on this shit then you are, by definition, an adult. Right? So my question is, #1, what the fuck is wrong with you fucking people? And #2, isn't it possible that not EVERYTHING from your childhood is sacred? That just because you were babysat by some moronic garbage that some assholes shoveled onto a TV screen to brainwash you into buying toys when you were the right age to be susceptible to it does not mean that you have to give a shit that the movie version does not star Marlon Brando? Is it blasphemous to say that maybe some badly drawn army men shooting lasers at each other so that you will pressure your parents into buying consumer products is not necessarily your generation's equivalent of Greek myths? Or that if it is maybe there should be some sort of generation-wide class action lawsuit against the culture for fucking you over so bad?

Maybe it's crazy talk, I don't know, it's just a theory I want to float out there for you fellas.

The movie will be decent

"The consumer's don't WANT a format war"

01:36:21 AM
Somewhat off topic here, but you talkbackers are routinely full of shit. "The consumer's don't WANT a format war, us SMART guys are going to just stick to dvd, etc., etc." That's what a fuckton of you armchair analyst jackasses were always saying in Harry's dvd columns. Well I just read how the HD format is eclipsing the sales seen by dvds in it's early years. You people don't have the first fucking clue about anything. You were excited about a fucking GI JOE movie starring Marlon Wayans. GI FUCKING JOE. Hearing shit like "Duke doesn't matter. Hawk is the real leader. The had BETTER get Wolverine or whoever right as the munitions expert though, that will be key," it's embarassing coming from what I assume are grown men like yourself. Yeah, I'm sure they're putting a lot of thought into this one. You embarass me and I actually live in my real mothers actual fucking basement.

It's not that properties like G.I.Joe, or X-men, or even Transformers are sacred, it's just, their adaptations could be so much more, and keep each of their respected studios (and I use that term lightly with Fox) raking in the dough for decades to come, if only they'd take a little time developing the characters, and stories, and shooting for something longterm rather than a halfassed job now and try to salvage it if it's a hit later mentality. And yes, despite what you may believe there is plenty of material for each of those licenses (especially Joe and X-men) to keep interest alive...if only handled right. But obviously the studios are employed by a lot of people like yourself.

I'm tired of big budget shitfests based on things I know deserve better. I'm tired of people writing off something because the "movie sucked". I'm not stressing it, but I sure as hell am disappointed that this is the way it is, and probably will be.

First off, Marlon Brando's dead. Sorry to break that to you, perhaps as someone who covers movies on a movie site you should have been upto date on that a little bit better. Perhaps if you would have said George Clooney you might have been a little closer to the mark. Secondly, The television medium is not a babysitter. Many of the fans of those classic 80's cartoons were often more active than 90% of the kids growing up today with thier PSP's, PS3'a and xbox360's. I know you can sugar coat the WII as active, but lets fact it you're inside your house doing jack-all but moving your arms around. Thirdly and most importantly, This is no different that reading a *BOOK* and getting a description of one of the leading characters from the pages that paints a vivid image as to what he\she should look like and knowing that a seasoned veteran with a tough as grit voice and crow's feet eyes is leading this elite band of covert-op soldiers. Instead you have a 27 year old kid who's last big lead was a movie called STEP UP where he convincingly played a TEENAGER. Mis-cast is the word to be used here, you can mock the source, you can mock the directors past efforts but the bottom line is if fan's are upset there is a reason don't try to act like you're on some high-horse just because you got a hard on from the guy or this site got some sort of special inside line to the production. The movie isn't done yet and I'm not going to judge but I certainly am entitled to bitch when you hear shit like this, and who cobra commander is supposed to be in the script. Considering these forums have had an impact on the development of rebirth of the superman movie (remember the script leak that had Luthor as Superman's UNCLE!) I think you should shut it, instead of belittling the fans who actually faithfully watched the TV show and bought the merchandise and might be the KEY audiance to this film NOT going direct to DVD.
G.I.JOE: The movie true story:
by Playkins
Jan 28th, 2008
02:04:41 AM
Did any of you guys hear about why the original G.I.Joe: The Movie animated film had that weird ending? Hasbro and Marvel/Sunbow got alot of crap from parents about Optimus Prime dying in Transformers: The Movie, and they didn't want to paint themselves into the same corner with an unpopular leader (like Rodimus Prime). The animation was done, so they re-recorded some dialog and threw it into the end, which is why they are all waving to an offscreen recovered Duke. True. I herd it 0n teh 1nt3rwebz.

HD formats are outselling the early years of DVD because when DVDs first hit they were 30 to 70 dollars depending on the title at a time when the DVD players was averaging about 1,000 dollars to buy. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have been steadily 30 bucks since they launched and the Blu-Ray and HD players have seen far swifter price drops than the original DVD player ever did. Factor in the PS3 owners and the 360 owners and that consoles meager selling HD periph. and you've got more people with access to the technology faster than with how DVD got it's start. But the "war" won't matter much in a couple years when everyone has terabyte set top boxes and HD films will be downloaded with no concern for format anyway.

Well I don't know, you guys are the experts but it seems to me there is a difference between some of those names you're throwing out there. I enjoyed the X-Men movies so I can clearly see how those are good stories and characters with interesting layers and things to say about the world in addition to naked blue skinned asskickers, etc. But GI Joe from what I remember was a bunch of badly drawn army guys talking real slow and slowly parachuting and shooting lasers at each other and then at the end I believe they make a joke and laugh and then they tell you not to stick a fork in the electrical outlets or play inside a refrigerator. I bet if you interviewed the people who made that show they would openly state that it was designed to sell toys to you and that there was little effort put into it actually being good. And if there was effort put into it maybe there was no talent to back it up. Is my guess. But you're the experts.

See with the transformers I think I get it, because robots are fun and you don't see them done in too many movies. But soldiers shooting lasers at each other? I don't get it I guess.

But more importantly, you guys gotta learn the auteur theory. Let's say GI JOE doesn't have to be moronic garbage. Far-fetched, but I'll go along with it. Still, you saw that they signed up Stephen Sommers to direct it. You know who he is. You've seen some of his movies. So give up, dude. The guy is not gonna elevate the material. You can't teach a fish to type, so don't spend the next year hoping a fish writes a novel. I'm tired of seeing your hearts broken over shit like this.

Still, it's good to hear that a television is not a babysitter, but in fact a valuable member of the family. As for Marlon Brando, you could've broke the news to me in a little more sensitive manner, you fucking monster. Didn't your commercials raise you better than that?

Thanks for the insights though guys. No offense intended. Brought to you by Hasbro.

Cobra - Evil terrorist organization. The JOES - Ultra patriotic group of diverse AMERICAN soldiers from different backgrounds defending the US from Cobra. A REAL AMERICAN HERO. For GI Joe to work all they need to do is make it as jingoistic as possible. People should walk out of theater trying to find an American flag to kiss. It should Red, White and Blue and hated by every hippie-wanna-be liberal movie reviewer in the country. That's all it will take to make it a blockbuster. Hell, how many 80's movies put out in the US were major worldwide blockbusters without ever having to have a French character in it? Yeesh!

I know it's hard to believe, but the comics had moments of 100% badassness. ...sincde this movie is clearly going to be a giant turd anyway, and I generally try to avoid giant turds. But since everyone's dissing Tatum, I feel the need to defend him since he was monstrously good in A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS. I think it's funny that everyone's assuming he will "ruin" GI Joe when really it's probably the other way around- he's just starting to prove himself as an actor and he really ought to run far, far away from this hot mess before it destroys any credibility he has managed to build back after that stupid ballet movie. He really is a good young actor and he should stick to solid shit like "Stop-Loss." Which, coincidentally, also stars Joe Gordon-Levitt, who coincidentally should also should run the hell away from this GI Joe nonsense. Seriously, what are these dudes thinking? On GI: Joe and the Transformers comparisons : Only here is Transformers considered a bad movie. Everywhere else people loved it. One of the surprise success stories of the year. $300+ million. I know money doesn't equal quality, but it's a good example of showing what people want, lest you forget this is a business. If GI Joe is half as successful and good as Transformers was, it'll be worth it. 2. It's a damn toy movie just like Transformers. Nobody cares about the characters that only existed in the cartoons that were last popular well over 20 years ago. 3. On the Blu-ray thing, Blu-ray will be around for a long time, probably not surpassing DVD but perhaps equaling it. The set-top boxes and direct download services that everyone says is the next step will never meet widespread popularity. People still want to own things, phyiscal media in their hands. And the bandwidth will not be there in this country for any kind of mass HD downloads other than a little bit here and a little bit there. Ten years from now might be a different story, but for this generation, Blu-Ray is the future, especially now that it's won the HD war. Lastly on the casting...the only frame of reference for Duke for the audience for this is their toys. They don't care how old he is. It's not a Superman situation where he's always been portrayed as someone in their 30's. This character has never been portrayed in live action at all. just dye his hair and cut him loose. The end.

That's right! I said it! I played with both the tall "action figures" (I think they were like 11" or so) as well as the little ones the cartoon was directed towards. Of course, when we played, people actually got fucking killed. But in that dumbass cartoon...no matter what...the show went out of its way to show the viewer that no one was killed...that the Cobra pilot flying that helicopter parachuted out to safety at the last second. So, nobody ever got killed. In the war between the World Terrorist Orgaization known as COBRA and the elite fighting force known as GI JOE. Nobody ever died. Oh yeah, the same thing happens in paint ball. Nobody dies. But I don't consider guys holding pain ball guns as terrorists, much less consider 10 or 12 of them as a 'terrorist organization'. The toys were kick ass no doubt...kung fu grip...brilliant..but the cartoon was ass. Plus I don't think there's much of an international market for this at the current time...bad casting or not...this seems like a doomed project.

I think I will start accepting crap from the studios. In fact i hope for it. Especially if it's based on a property that isn't important to me. I'm a little young to have grown up with Speed Racer, ergo I think if it's garbage that any fans of it should just keep their fucking yaps shut, cause really it's just an over the top Japanese cartoon where people drive around and yell stuff. I mean it's a CARTOON for God sakes. Cartoons are stupid and only get made so people can make toys out of them. So if they mean something to you, their corporate sponsorship somehow completely negates any of your feelings. Let's ignore that a lot of these "licenses to print money" had character with well written back stories and well written comic books that continue to this very day, because it's just a stupid cartoon, and most of you live in your parents basement anyway. Oh and guess what, it's Stephen Sommers. So now that you KNOW the movie is going to be crap you should just accept that and be quiet. Happy event hat someone is making you C-A-R-T-O-O-N into a major Hollywood picture film. This argument is completely logical. Nope, no logic flaws at all......I expect more from you Vern

A young baroness I can get, even a young black ripcord, nothing wrong with mixing things up, Roadblock's not Roadblock, eh. But this is goddamn Duke. This is the Master Sarge this is the head field honcho and top kick of an elite SF group. In real life a guy like that'd be in his mid thirties minimum, to go that young is beyond unrealistic. I know its just GI Joe, but it needs some grounding in the real world you know. Top that with the fact Superhero Flix recently ran a story that Joseph Gordon-Levitt may be Cobra Commander, who of course is a former Joe in this treatment, that just breaks the bank for me. They used the old cliche that the greatest threat to America is one of its own SF guys gone bad, and as a former military man myself I have always found that insulting anyway because most guys who do that job don't become mercs or crazy; they want nothing to do with fighting or war again after they have voluntarily served, usually several years just to get to the point of becoming an operator and under gone training so tough that it make a grown man weep just to get their SF standing let alone a group like Delta, that a real Joe team would more than likely draw from. (sigh) This just sucks. I was a GI Joebaby as a kid. I pick on people that post things like you ruined my childhood all the time, but they certainly aren't respecting mine, or the service of people who fill roles like this in real life.

The people who liked Transformers are the idiot American public, the same people who made Norbit a success. Nuff said aboutt hat. Second of all while Transformers and Joe are originally cartoons, they also have comic books with years of well written history, in Joe's case by Larry Hama, who is fantastic. Just because you didn't read them, doesn't mean they don't exist or aren't important. So treat this project like you would any other comic book movie that's being bastardized. Also, SUperman hasn't always been portrayed by someone in their 30's. Christopher Reeve, thus far the definitive live action Suerman, was in his 20's when first cast. So know what you are talking about before you comment.
Just a toy commercial?
by Count Magpyre
Jan 28th, 2008
01:44:12 PM
I was wondering how long it would take before some moron decided to take a shot at the fans and dismiss the property as a shit based on a toy commercial. (congrats on the startling amount of research and accuracy there, Vern) Transformers, here we go again eh? Well, as someone who grew up reading the COMICS, including the excellent 'GI Joe-Special Missions' spin-off series, I'd at least like to see a good movie based on this property. But apparently it's sacrilege to ask for a good movie based on an existing property here (unless it concerns Lord of the Rings). Harry Potter is a kids property, but WB is knocking that out of the park, so why can't we have a decent PG-13 (no, you dont need to see blood and guts to have a good action/war movie) with fun and colorful characters that sit somewhere between Megaforce (yes, it's a shit movie, but the characters and vehicles are pretty close to the Joe team) and the Space Marines in Aliens. And I hope the suits casting this dont think that having a young Duke will pull in the kids, because I remember being a kid and it was never the pretty boy teens you wanted to grow up and be (or pretend to be when you were playing with your friends), it was the manly Han Solo/Indiana Jones types. Kids don't like Robin, they want to be Batman. And thanks to having a pre-teen daughter, I've actually seen most of the movies this guy has been in and he doesnt exactly light up the screen with charisma. I dont even care about the backlash regarding Marlon Wayans being in this because I can see his potential as a actor...I just think he should have been cast as the wise-cracking Stalker from the early issues of the comics. Anyway, enough of a rant. I just think that people here (especially the movie review crew) should stop trying to patronize the fans for having an opinion on a property they feel strongly about, when they (the patronizers) are clearly talking out of their asses when it comes to knowing anything about the property.

I don't lament the Joe movie for the cartoon, I like a lot of guys my age watched the cartoon as kids and tweens, but the show didn't win me over it was like killer said above; the comic. Larry Hamma made Snakes-Eyes the ultimate badass. I like this stuff mostly for him. The toys were the begining, every character statred as a toy then they went to Hamma to make that toy alive. He gave them their back story, he gave them their roles and attitudes in the books and did a damn fine job. I mean how many writers can be handed a toy design and then make that character and intigrate it into an ongoing story and run with it. He did. The cartoon was the last stop on the train, though admittedly the most widely known next to the toys themselves. But I feel like the diservice is mainly being done to the comic which was always one of my favorite things as a kid. In fairness Ray Park is a great choice for Snake_Eyes, I even like actor they chose for Storm Shadow, he's got a good look. I just really wish they all would have been around Ray's age. Think of watching Black Hawk Down thr Rangers are all younger kids Mid 20's maybe on the first or second reinlistment, but the Delat guys and were much older comparitively mid to late 30's some in their 40's. That is the range and skill level a Joe should be and that's how Larry wrote them. Haggered vets. Real Snake eaters. I want that damnit. Not Abercrombie models. the only ones I see that with are the casting of Heavy Duty and Snake-Eyes.

To quote Indy, 'It't not the years, it's the milage.' Yes, some 20-somethings can look mature and grown up. Chris Reeves was 24 when cast as Superman, but he looked like a 'man' then. It's kind of like the situation when casting Superbad...Seth Rogan wrote the part for himself, but as he put it, he 'aged really bad' and couldn't pass himself off as a teenager anymore. However, the guy (cant remember the name right now) who ended up playing the part was just a year or two younger than Rogan. There's a reason why this guy playing Duke still gets cast in teen movies...he just doesnt look like an adult.

People who have read and enjoyed comics are bashing GIJoe and Transformers??? First off, GIJoe has been around long before the cartoon arrived(it was Cobra that was new and created as the antagonists) Second, anyone who criticizes either of said toons who, as a child or adult reads comics about men in colorful underwear with superpowers, or a guy in a black rubber mask who beats up a homicidal clown is HIGH. HIGHHIGHHIGH. What was that old adage about the pot and kettle?? I don't get this whole "My childhood heroes and mythology is cooler than yours" schtick. Were these toons 'toy commercials'. DUH. Here's your cookie. Now having said that, let me remind its critics of something: Spiderman, Superman, Batman, et al. were created to sell comic books. All these toons of the 80s did was take that concept and go pro. It does NOT make them any less cool or any less beloved than any comic book/manga/video game characters that other people love. It's patently disengenous to hate on someone else's geek mythology as being 'silly' or 'ridiculous' when if you look at any comic book character, that can apply as well. Try repeating the story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to yourself and see if you don't think it's just a little whack. Applying real world logic to any of these mythologies defeats the whole purpose. It's FANTASY. Designed to get us to buy into it(some more than others) and to sell something. Be it comics, toys, or whatever. To try and pass ANY of this popculture as something greater defeats the purpose. Enjoy it and stop complaining. Thank you.

In the military there are three types: enlisted men, warrant officer (basically helipopter pilots) and officers. When you first join you start out ususally (exceptions for college credits but) as E-1, WO-1, or O-1. The grade tells us Duke is an enlisted man. He is not an officer. He works for a living. In the Army, E-1 is a private, E-2 is private (still a private, but a little more rank and money), E-3 is private first class. E-4 can be either specialist or corporal, E5 is Sgt. E-6 is staff sgt. E-7 is Sgt. First Class, and E-8 is First Sgt. Bottom line is no twenty something kids flies through the ranks like that. If he joined at 18 he would have to advance almost every year. I've been out for a while, and would have to look up any promotion information on the military websites, but bottom line is it ain't happening. No twenty something could be a First Sergeant. Thus endeth the lesson.

has the gaul to rip into a bunch for being excited about a production that deals with a property they loved when they were kids themselves.

Is GI Joe commercial in nature? Sure. Does that take away the fun factor for whomever enjoys it? Absolutely not, but then, someone like Vern, whose failure to understand GI Joe's attraction doesn't really surprise me, should no better then to knock other properties around based upon commercial enterprise and marketing. I mean, really, the sole point for his beloved comic books were to sell adds for kids, so how is this any different? Oh, excuse me, TOY manufacturing played a role in character creation, where as his beloved superheroes were based entirely upon serious creative concerns.

And I think that most fans would agree that the comics did an excellent job of fleshing out these characters so that they became more than just saturday morning commercials. of course you can be an O-1 at 22 that's what ROTC is all about. As your the rest of your comments it appears that you are in the reserves, and not on active duty. Is that correct, or am I misreading your comments due to their (ahem) clarity. The path to promotion is much quicker in the reserves than regular army. No one is saying, and I'm not saying it's not possible to be an E-8 in your twenties in the reserves. There's nothing wrong with the reserves, I was in the NG myself, but we are talking active duty here. GI Joe is not made of reservists. So, I, as you put it, am talking like I know shit. Please take note of the complete sentences and correct spelling. If you are on active duty, and an E-7, then more power to you.

Last month, when Searcy himself joined those ranks with only 12 years of service, not many people considered it out of the ordinary. skills to be an E-6 as tme2nsb has still not answered the question which was asked. I will ask it again. Are you, or are you not active duty. And again, if you are an E-6 at 24 more power to you, but learn how to answer a question. As far as the rest, could very well be that the rank structure is changing. I left in 1993, and was considering re-enlisting this time as active duty because the job market sucks. Previously soldiers had to pass boards to make rank. The recruiter told me they don't do that anymore, and with a lot of guys if you're in for X amount of time, and don't pass the board you get promoted anyway. He said a lot of the old timers are mad about that one. Can't say I blame them.

by IndustryKiller!

The origins of something are completely and utterly irrelevant. It's where it ends up that counts. The entire Secret Wars story in Marvel comics was written as nothing more then an excuse to get all the characters in one spot in order to make a toy line out of them. It says this plainly in the intro to the graphic novel collection. Does this mean that every single Spider Man storyline with the black costume is total bullshit and unworthy of the best possible screen adaptation? No, of course not and only an ignorant fool would think as much. G.I. Joe is no different and deserves no less respect. So for the record, for every jackass who needs this spelled out for them. NO ONE IS ASKING FOR FUCKING SHAKESPEARE!! I'm going to repeat that, because most of the apologists during the whole Transformers fiasco were too thick to process it. NO ONE IS ASKING FOR FUCKING SHAKESPEARE!! Just an adaptation that stays true to the characters.

So according to Vern: if it's going to suck then why get upset when it seems to be guaranteed to suck even further?

Simple: Multiple offenses. Multiple offenses warrant more severe penalties. The worse this gets the madder everyone should get.

It's not about just raping childhoods. This is about using that rape to get a piece of shit funded. This is like your priest tapping your ass when you're 8 (*coughBSBcough*) and then writing a book about it 20 years later and making millions.

Ok that's a little severe but it gets the point across. Cause the icky gooey icing on this rape cake will be when the movie does huge $$$ there by validating Stephen Sommers as a film maker to producers and studios even further and resulting in 5 sequels.

I'm hesitant to weigh in on this at all, but: consider for a moment that although, yes, the reason Hasbro et al. were funding these cartoons was to sell toys, that's not what made them popular. Because they were popular, certainly more so than any other tv commercials I can think of. My sense of it is that the combination of 30-minute animated commercials and toylines created a new type of toy: action figures/robots that had personalities, backstories, and continuing adventures. Sure, simplistic and juvenile personalities, backstories, and adventures, but still.

My point, I guess, is simply that the dismissive arguments people make about the cartoons being cynical attempts to get kids to buy toys are wrongheaded. After all, every movie, tv show, comic book, dtv Segal vehical, etc. that people around here like was made for the purpose of making money. GI Joe and Transformers are no different. If you think that they are junk material unworthy of film, go ahead and say that (I'd wholeheartedly agree with you)--but realize that it's a separate question from whether or not their creators wanted to sell merchandise.

That said, this movie looks ridiculous. The premise is moronic, and I can't imagine any actor playing these sorts of roles straight without feeling like a complete jackass.

GI Joe is a comic book. Not so much a cartoon.
by Walterego
Jan 29th, 2008
12:31:01 AM
The cartoon was retarded, made by hacks who assumed little kids would watch anything. The laser guns were stupid. Back in the 80s the only kids who watched it were the ones who really would watch anything. The comic book was what gave the GI Joe toys any character. Snake Eyes especially was cool because of the comic book. The toy company emulated the direction that the comic gave the characters, such as when they started supplying Snake Eyes with samurai swords after the comic developed this whole Ninja backstory, followed by the Storm Shadow action figure. As somebody who was just the right age during the height of GI Joe popularity, I assure you that the appeal of GI Joe was all about the comic book. Even as a kid I could tell that the cartoon was just a commercial, and that it was totally lame. All my friends who collected the action figures and toys thought so then.

(in which case, I salute you), but if you are serious, you should really do a bit of research and think more about the US and its place in the world. The sort of sense of American exceptionalism and entitlement you're espousing is a big part of the reasons why the US is weakening power. The US was on top because its people worked hard for it (and the rest of the world was more or less destroyed by WW2 and colonialism), not because it was intrinsically special.

For an interesting/accessible analysis on how the US is in many ways a declining superpower in an increasingly tri-polar world, take a look at http://tinyurl.com/2m4xnw.

I didn't know there was a comic strip that you guys loved. If it's really so great then I apologize. I just wanted to offer the idea of thinking about that maybe just because you remember something existing on television in the '80s does not mean that it is worth getting emotional about. I've noticed you guys can get pretty nostalgic for alot of stuff that is not necessarily, like, good. And as far as I knew GI JOE was those army dolls everybody played with and then in the '80s it was some inept flagwaving swill that was cynically used to pump money out of your parents. Apparently it is that plus a comic strip. I mean, even a bunch of you guys who profess to love these characters are calling it a fucking "property." You say it's not just a toy commercial but you use businesssman terminology to describe it. I just worry I'm gonna see you guys getting all worked up about CHEETOHS: THE MOVIE next. How DARE they cast that guy as Chester the Cheetah! This is one of my favorite properties! Its trademarks and copyrighted likenesses were a dear part of my childhood!

But if GI JOE really is an actual story and they could've made it into a real movie then my apologies. Maybe this isn't the best example then.

But Industry Killer, I wasn't saying to just accept crap, you know me better than that bud. I was just saying you guys lost this battle months ago when they hired the director. That was when it became crap. I see a bunch of neanderthals ranting about gays and blacks because they don't like the name of an actor who was cast in the movie. But the cast is irrelevant at this point, you know that. You think if they really got Daniel Craig or Clint Eastwood that he would be able to teach Stephen Sommers how to make a movie that has rhythm and builds to a thrilling climax and tells a good story? I don't think he could.

And as for Moondoggy, you're thinking of somebody else, I don't know what you're talking about super heroes being precious and all that.

Anyway sorry to offend everybody, but if you do start defending CHEETOHS THE MOVIE I will take the apology back.

You think we had this much love for a glorified toy commercial? You call yourself a geek? Hang your head in shame. The comic went over 100 issues. It was before the days of the graphic novel, but it was a comic BOOK. Furthermore it is plainly obvious that you have not read a single previous talkback on GI Joe because a lot of us have been ragging on the cartoon where no one gets shot (and don't get us going on Cobra-la ie Highlander 2) but the comic had story arc, chemistry between characters, and yes, people dying. Were there times when it goes cheesy, sure, but not one-tenth of what was in the show. I can't believe Vern actually admitted to not knowing about the comic. Ask any Joe geek about the "silent castle" and they'll know what it means. Ask about Snake Eyes' tattoo and they'll know what it means. All this info was in previous forums. Those of us in the know tried to educate the uninformed. There is no way you read the previous talkbacks. Sorry, but seriously I've lost respect

it's a book, not a strip. 32 glorious pages a month. :-) seriously, though, Vern. Get down to a comic shop (or Borders or Barnes&Noble) and find a trade paperback of the Marvel series. The first 50 issues are available in TPB form. Hell, if you email an address, I'll buy one and send it to you. (or maybe check it out of a public library if they have it) You'll see the writing was excellent, Larry Hama never treated it like a toy tie-in. One good reason? He created the character profiles for Hasbro... so these were creations he had a vested interest in... and he kept it up for the better part of 155 issues. Anyway, yeah... the Joe fans remember the toon, there are some fans who are more toon fans than comic fans... but the toon was completely schilling the toys and we knew it.

issues. I thought it got killed just short of ten years i.e. 120 issues. Yeah, Hama didn't bow down to Hasbro. Of course since Marvel had the license from them there were some concessions that had to be made. Check out this little tidbit. One of the writers/artists of the book had a side band, just a hobby called the K-otics. In one of the issues, it was somewhere up in the 90s I think, it showed Clutch with a K-otics World Tour t-shirt. It was geek minutia, but I thought it was funny. Oh yeah, until Vern apologizes not for disrespecting GI Joe, but for not educating his dumb self by reading the other Joe forums, I have not respect. Might not even after that, but it is the only chance to redeem himself. I need to go through my comics this morning, see if I have any duplicates, and maybe send Vern a copy.

Dude, the casting is not that bad. We have no reason to assume that the people playing 'Duke' and 'Scarlett' are bad actors just because they aren't big names yet, and if they had to cast a Middle Eastern guy in the film to fill the international quota, why not a second-stringer like 'Breaker', and why not an actor as memorable as Said Taghmaoui, who stole every scene he had in THREE KINGS? Gordon-Levitt is a head-scratcher, as is the decision to use 'Heavy Duty' instead of 'Roadblock', but the only really cringe-worthy inclusion here is Marlon Wayans as 'Ripcord' (be grateful he's not 'Stalker'). Quaid, Miller, and 'Simon Adebisi' from OZ are actually better actors than the material warrants, and Ray Park as 'Snake Eyes' is a sky-punching home run (as is Vosloo).

For what, not being a big enough geek and not throwing a fit because some guy named Channing is playing the yellow haired guy that leads a bunch of ninjas and some broad that throws spears against a terrorist organization spawned from an underground snake world led by a guy in golden armor who flies around and throws snakes at people? Look, maybe there's some good shit in the comics, but the reason the studio is making the film and the reason most people are going to go see it is because of nostalgia for dudes with silly names shooting lasers at each other. Maybe the comic does have a deep emotional story about Dr. Mindbender's childhood, but I don't think most people are going to give a shit. You can't throw a tantrum every time the studios don't cater to your personal fantasy of how a property should be adapted. Or maybe you can. I just hope Sgt. Slaughter gets to play himself, even if he is old as shit.

Adding Hawk to the team lessens the blow of Duke Jr. (Always hated Duke anyway so it's good to see the true leader getting included). But I still wish they would have used mostly the original line-up of Joes. Partially because each member filled a unique position on the team, and partially because they had the better codenames which were more realistic and reflected their personalities rather than what they did. Then, for the first movie, have it a straight up battle against Cobra, with Cobra Commander and the Baroness being the only 'face' badguys. You could also have hints of Snake-eyes being a ninja. Then, build upon this and include more of the mercenaries such as Destro, Baron Bludd, Storm Shadow, Zartan and Firefly in the sequel. This ups the ante and gives them somewhere to go with the series rather than blowing their load all in the first movie. But Vern's right...it's Sommers so I'm expecting something in line with Street Fighter.

The movie is going to suck....inevitably. Stephen Sommers is terrible and beyond that I think this is an incredibly difficult "property" to adapt to the screen right from the get go. With that said I don't care. I read the Transformers script months before the film and I knew given that and the director that the thing was a total wash. That doesn't stop me from being pissed that a perfectly good concept for an awesome genre flick (something in short supply these days) gets completely fucked over. In regard to G.I. Joe I just take the whole thing very personally. Out of all the 80's properties I grew up with Joe was my favorite. The characters were distinct, the vehicles were incredible, and the entire concept was pretty damn rad. So yeah it was made to sell toys, and they were god damn good toys. The cartoon was pretty good in that it that all the Joe's and Cobra had very unique and individual personalities and the comic just brought the whole thing to another level. So as far as how the idea of G.I. Joe from the start holds no water as a concept is completely ridiculous. Good is good, no matter the intention.

Who do you think would have been the right director for a GI JOE film? GI JOE was my favorite growing up, too, but I can't see it being anything more than a cheesy, fun action flick. I don't want them to fuck with it either, and I have some major reservations about certain aspects of the production. But, as cool as GI JOE is, this is not a "serious" property. Sommers may not ultimately be the right guy, but he's in the right ballpark as far as directors go. And, it's nothing supernatural like VAN HELSING or THE MUMMY - hell, he didn't even write the script. And, whatever flaws he has as a storyteller, he's a competent action director. But, this was never going to be RAIDERS or DIE HARD or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, and people need to calm down and see what actually gets filmed. Shooting doesn't even start until March.

and everyone should consider this: Take another look at Van Helsing. The introduction of the Frankenstein monster was a scene that was almost re-created scene by scene of the orignal Frankenstein movie. Having said that I think Sommers, hoping he's done some research, could do something similar with the comic panels. It'll be no Rodriguez Sin City translation. No one expected that, even from Rodriguez. But based upon that part of Van Helsing alone I think it could work.

is that he has no rhythm. It's just constant BANG BANG BANG. There is no build at all, it's just in your face from beginning to end. An example that comes to mind is that in THE MUMMY, even when there is a scene about talking in the library, for no reason he has all of the shelves fall down like dominoes, destroying the entire library. The result of this constant mayhem is that when it got to the end I thought "That's the end?" Not that I didn't want it to be over, but to me it just didn't have any build to it, it was just the same pitch the whole time.

To be fair though I gave up on him after his first two movies, so I don't know if he improved in MUMMY RETURNS and VAN HELSING. But I have not heard anyone claim he has.

But yes, I do agree that Verhoeven would be the perfect person to direct it. Then it would be my most anticipated movie of the year.

And if there was effort put into it maybe there was no talent to back it up. Is my guess. But you're the experts."

The depth of the Larry Hama comic aside (which introduced me to the I-Ching and taught me that Trotsky was assassinated with an icepick to the back of the neck in Mexico), there's an interview with Marv Wolfman on the DVD for the first Joe Mini-series where he actually states the complete opposite of your wager.

He said that UNLIKE other 30 minute toy commercials of the time, he said they were never pressured to shill products, they were encouraged to make the characters likeable and believable, and given almost free reign to do so.

The tail end of the G.I. Joe comic's run is a different story.

I think in the context of what it was they managed some remarkable things.

I rewatched a good chunk of the episodes last year when I was given the Season 1 DVDs. Hadn't seen the episodes in at least a decade and I was impressed by how well they had aged. Sure they have the aroma of cheese, but they don't creak and groan like Thundercats, He-Man, Transformers, or any of the other 30 minute toy commercials of my youth.

There's a great deal of maturity in some of the storylines. The two-parter "Worlds Without End", for example, where some of the Joes get sent into a parallel dimension where Cobra not only rules the world, but has also defeated and killed all the Joe members. There's a scene where Steeler and Grunt find skeletons OF THEMSELVES. Total and complete mindfuck as a kid, let me tell you.

The comic book may have reinvigorated the toyline which led to the cartoon, but it's the nostalgia being mined, nothing else. So yeah. The cartoon was great. The comic book was better. This isn't either of those and was never ever going to be. G.I.J.O.E. is TRULY going to be GIJOEINO.

That's why this movie is going to be a stupid heap of failure. Not because it's based on a "silly" cartoon or comic book (strip). There's lots of movies/books/etc that have been based on slight material and turned out to be masterpieces. No, it's going to be a stupid heap of failure because the people making it could give two shits about what they're making other than trying to make a quick buck. They have no passion for the story they are telling and the end result will just be soulless and mechanical. Like Velveeta.

Maybe if the people involved actually CARED about the cartoon, the comic book, even the toys, it might stand a chance, but they don't.

I'm not a fanatic or anything. My childhood hasn't been violated in any way. The whole project's made me roll my eyes and sigh exasperatedly, but that's because, as a filmmaker, I just don't understand why someone would waste their time making something they have no obvious passion for. Go sell insurance or something if you're just "doing a job to get paid", y'know?

By the way, I am a huge fan of your reviews. I agreed 100% with your Transformer review and still quote portions of it to people when I try to explain my intense hatred for that film.

Belittling G.I. Joe
by BizarroJerry
Jan 30th, 2008

I gotta agree it's just hypocritical and silly for some people around here to dismiss G.I. Joe as something silly or too commercial or corporate. For some reason, a movie about a guy in brightly colored tights and a cape, who flies and shoots laser beams out of his eyes requires a serious, reverant film or fanboys riot in the streets, while a property about soldiers with machine guns fighting terrorists is somehow kiddie junk. Ridiculous. Apparently Superman and Spider-Man were created for charitable reasons. The cartoon was admittedly silly at times, but anyone who has been a fan of the comic book series realizes it deserves no less respect than an original comic book creation. And, for the past seven years, a new Joe series has been running. A lot of people care about the comics (and the cartoons) as much as many people care about Batman. It's just a fewer amount of people. And if you think those movies aren't for the sake of selling toys, walk down the aisle of a toy store. G.I. Joe villains, by the way, are basically James Bond villains, anyway.

I've just read that Larry Hama, the original writer of the comic series, and most of the character profiles included in with the toys way back when is to be a "creative consultant" on the new movie. Sure, that sounds like pandering to fanboys, but it also shows that there are enough fans worth pandering to. Geek snobbery is TOO funny. "G.I. Joe is just a silly toy... Organic webshooters?!? My God, no! My precious childhood memories destroyed! Waaahhh!"

The same guy has reviewed all 3 versions of the script in the past he loved the first loathed the second and he says this one is the best of the three. Bad news: Steven Sommers can find a way to fuck up a great script I'm sure, but since he's never been given one I can't be sure. It only gave details on the first act. Some of which sounded very cool, but he didn't really get into details about more worrisome things like Wayans' character or the rumored identity of Cobra Commander. Plus while the team's now led by Americans, it's still sounds like much of the international bullshit is present. It practically screams, "We may be Americans fighting terrorists but we formed an international coalition so you don't hate us, United Nations!" Having "G.I. Joe" refer to an international group is like having a movie about "Uncle Sam" in which he's a Guatemalan.

I'm OK with the international aspect of the team as long as it was the US' idea and our people are running it. The team itself can be international all it wants, as long as Duke, Hawk, Snake Eyes and the original core group are from the US, I'm good. I don't mind if Breaker is middleastern or Heavy Duty is African, etc, just so long as Duke isn't Iranian or any other classic Hollywood irony. The Pitt sounds like it'll be US based and if the unit is moble I don't have a problem with them globe trotting. I still don't like the idea that Cobra Commander is a former Joe, though. I'm even good with GI Joe being an acronym Global Interdiction Joint Operation Entity is not too bad, Though I thought the last part should be Expiditionary Teams, thus G.I.J.O.E Teams or J.O.E. Teams, but thats knit-picking, I know. I have a little hope left. Quaid, Park, and some of the other cast are good choices. Some not so good, but people can always surprise you. The real make or break falls on Sommers, dear God I hope he doesn't make this thing feel like the Mummy Movies which were fun to watch the first time through... given a healthy suspention of disbelief in the action scenes which were cartoonish at best and zero actor/director preformance directing. And Van Helsing was the biggest movie turd I have ever seen in my life... honestly how in the blazing blue fuck do you take a film with Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolfman and (Van Wolverine)and fuck that up? It should have sold itself for Christsake. He his the weakest link in the whole thing and that is where my fears lie and my hope fades.
