and Alan Arkin, come on. I would watch him paint his bathroom. I still think his performance in The Russians Are Coming, is one of the funniest performances in cinema history.

Johnny English was terrible and I can't see this being any better. A real shame too since Steve Carell is a funny guy. I can even imagine him in the role of Maxwell Smart if the film right. Sadly it seems that they have decided to take everything that was wrong with JE and stick it into this film

It was dream casting. It was a show/scenario whose time had come again. I was convinced they could do no wrong. And yet, total crap. I hope they backed up a truck full of cash money to the homes of Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. I await the day movies are not merely a vehicle for disappointment.

I agree, Carrell and Arkin may be the only thing that can save this one (the script is, as I understand it, pretty bad - not Steve-Martin-Pink-Panther-bad, but bad) but, as a fan of the original from WAY back (as in age 8) I'll see it... I may be the only person IN the theatre, but I'll see it....

Even chud made a little aside to you doing that when they printed something about Parnassus (how they didnt have the heart to put that on the day Ledger had died see some people have respect). Parnassus by the way which they also scooped you to.. yeah you said youd come back with that but looks like you dont got the scoop for that either.

Maybe, but I have to say the last scene where he throws the phone cracked my shit up big time. Carrell as Maxwell Smart doesn't seem all that different from Carrell as Michael in The Office, which, all things considered, isn't such a bad thing; I'm currently suffering from Office withdrawals...

Let's face it: the 60's spy parody was already co-opted to everyone's satisfaction by Mike Myers and "Austin Powers." And for some reason I'm getting really tired of Carrel, which I thought I'd never say. He's done too many unfunny, crap movies lately, and this looks like just another in a succession. Also, I cannot STAND Anne Hathaway - she is just like that marginally talented girl in the college drama department who kept getting all the lead roles for no discernable reason (other than, probably, her oral sex skills). She's a self-conscious, obvious actress who can't stop mugging for the camera. It's tiresome. Actually, those last two lines would probably also apply to Carrel as well these days.

i laughed at the end, tho i think that was a direct steal from the tv show.

as for the shoe phone gimmick, the tv show was in an age where there were no wireless phones and no cell phones. and generally, phones were big and heavy, and when you dailed them they went whrrrrrrrr dt dt dt dt dt whrrrrrr dt dt whrrrr dt whrrrr dt dt dt.

So in that time, even a portable phone would have been entirely impossible to hide on your person. "hey whats in the big box you always carry around? Are you a secret spy or something?"

So having it be a shoe made it something he could always have, that even when captured he'd likely not be without.

I'm somewhat shocked

You know, I loved Don Adams and the original Get Smart series. Being ancient of days, I saw it first run. Sean Connery was James Bond and I had read all the Ian Fleming books. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Mission Impossible were current and popular. Get Smart was just brilliant from the start playing with all that. People laughed out loud watching...I know we did at my house. Remember...we didn't know all the gags and bits yet. "Hymie, kill the light" PFFT, PFFT "OK, Max" It was "must see TV" before NBC drove that phrase into the ground. I say all this to make a point; the timing for this flick may be perfect. Contrasted to Bourne, the rebooted James Bond (which goes back to the hard Connery badass vibe), Iraq War versus Cold War, a similar economic climate, this may be just the time for Maxwell Smart. I laughed during the trailer and guffawed at the bit with the "element of surprise" at the end. If this doesn't end up being the best of the film, and there's more to see, it very well may be a huge hit. As I said, huge fan of the original, and this didn't piss me off. Quite the opposite, I am looking forward to it. You know, not a few people thought remaking a gothic horror novel from the 1800's, written by a woman, into a comedy was a idiotic idea. Thankfully, Mel Brooks made "Young Frankenstein" anyway.

>They better have an awesome opening titles sequence with Carrel walking through craploads of different slamming iron doors, ending in him disappearing down an phone booth/elevator! That was really the only good part of the series and it'll be the only good part of this movie... The only good part of the series? Not hardly. I've just finished re-watching (several times) the opener of the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE send-up episode of GET SMART where Smart is in a bus terminal, getting his briefing from a portable reel-to-reel recorder set in a baggage coin locker. Once finished, the recording self destructs, but gets it wrong and every OTHER locker is trashed, except that one. Max takes the still-playing recorder out of the locker, sets it on the ground, jumps up and down on it, then tries clubbing it ... to no avail. Finally he picks the bulky box up, slips it partly under his coat and tries to look nonchalant as he walks out with the thing still blaring out his mission data. Riot, riot! Or the classic where Max barely avoids getting blown up and shot, then learns from a KAOS agent that there's a contract out on his head and that he won't live out the day. Smart replies breezily "I've got news for you, fella, anyone wants to collect that reward will have to do it over *my* *dead* *body*!" At which point Max pauses, thinks about what he's just said, and the resulting facial expression practically justifies the invention of television all on its own. Next to this SEINFELD is about as creative/funny as watching pain dry.
