...not that it has to be this one, but I'm starting to smell some serious Payola going on with this site. I have been reading AICN for years now, and have just recently joined up for the talkbacks. but come on now - not every new movie is worthy of such outrageous positive support. And, the entire Heath Ledger talkback fracas was really something! Only on AICN can you get such crazy shit. Whew!

wow great review if true! I am going to see Rambo DAY ONE!!! With or without Harry's Review. But its hard to take this with a grain of salt when he is always so buddy buddy with Stallone. hmmmmm would Harry have the balls to say it sucked and still assume Sly would show up for his GREAT 5 Day Q&A. I think not. Sly I am going to be there Day One ayways :) I just hope it is 1/2 as good as Harry said. He has a bad track record.

HBO's Entourage hit Harry on the Head... when they had their "internet reviewer" ie: Harry Knowles. So glad to see Sly reclaiming his action hero crown, I hope Rambo does the numbers so Sly can get the juice to pursue other Big Screen projects. Personally I'd love for Stallone to buddy up in Inglorious Bastards, just wish QT would stop pissing around with Russ Meyer remakes and jump back into the mainstream with something big.

And most importantly, I will go to SUPPORT old-school non-pussified action movies. I am sick, sick to death, sick to puke of PG-13 family-friendly blockbusters and action pieces touched by the Syndrome Of Michael Bay. Sick of all this shit. I won't pay a dollar anymore to go watch another Die Hard 4. Let the heads roll under Sly's Machete... and let the bodies hit the fucking floor !

Over The Top Review
by Alex Trevelyan
Jan 23rd, 2008
07:52:19 PM
I'd have to agree the review here is absolutely over the top. The stock in Mr. Harry's integrity is falling all the time with these HYPERBOLOIC reviews. Words are a currency sir. Spend them wisely! Anyway First Blood is good. A Classic. Rambo 2 is simply dated and poor. Rambo 3 "dedicated to the people of Afghanistan" (in the closing credits) is a terrible piece of communication and not entertaining. Rambo I think will be on a par with the first but not as good. I look forward to it and Sly can sleep easy as its going to make a fortune. $40m plus or minus $5m in the opening weekend. Cheers now!

"I won't pay a dollar anymore to go watch another Die Hard 4." What, a perfectly good movie, and one of the tops in the franchise, that doesn't have other word being 'fuck' and gallons of blood pouring everywhere? It's not a matter of growing up but a matter of what you enjoy in an action movie. And yeah, I won't hide that I love blood, non-edulcorated violence. Not that it makes a film great, but it's always a plus in my book provided the story and characters are interesting. Die Hard 4? Not a bad action film, but a true disappointment compared to the original trilogy. The techno terrorism was boring like hell, the characters as well, even McClane was unlikable. And no, I wouldn't spend 10 bucks on a Die Hard 4 again. I'd rather stick to DVDrips than encourage studios to go this way.

How come I get a sense everyone loves Rocky Balboa?

I know we all love the man, but comeone, it was pory scripted and you know it. When characters in a movie have to constantly EXPLAIN to you how they are feeling -- instead of just showing them in situations where you get a sense o said feelings --, chances are you will get a cliché ridden movie. And we did!

Plus [spoiler alert] Rocky's "you are all winners" finale is everything BUT badass.

As I stated above, I have been a fan of this site for several years, so obviously I know the drill - it's just that everytime I check out one of Harry's featured opinion pieces on a flick lately, it turns out to be another "Best. Movie. Ever." That said, it seems like we agree for the most part. And I am not a Harry-Hater - I enjoy this site alot. AICN is always my first stop for movie news and gossip. All I'm saying is that things are getting a bit Ebert-esque, whereas nearly every film that is reviewed gets "Two Thumbs Up". Props to Sly, though, for taking the time to respond to the fans.

will be able to handle it. If the scenes from the first trailer (the rated R one) are in the movie, it looks to be incredibly brutal and gory.

Hell, I may be disturbed. I haven't seen a movie that looks to be that graphically violent in quite a while.

Since I got married my viewing habits have been pretty much restricted to an MPAA rating of G, PG, PG-13 and the occasional R as long as it's a Rom-Com a la 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up.

I can't remember the last time I saw a super-violent movie. And this one's violence looks a helluva lot more realistically graphic than the other Rambo movies. I hope there's more to it than a lot of blood and guts. And I hope that Harry isn't being his usual hyperbolic self in this case.

Best Rambo Review I've read so far:
by Sledge Hammer
Jan 23rd, 2008
10:35:25 PM
Straight from the wonder that is the IMDB:

Therefore yes, I was at the press projection, and I have only a thing to say, my friends: This Movie Will Rock the World...

Stallone is sublime inside, the film is extraordinary, the personage magnificently is exploited, and the end is an absolute killings (and a complete butcher shop). I have almost envies to resume one to one the arguments of all the *beep* that descended the film without even to have seen it.

Outside of a small blow of soft one for about twenty minutes in the middle, the film is as good as Rocky Balboa (already a masterpiece to my eyes). This is really the only defect: 20 Mn in the middle where the film advances little.

But the first half an hour, this is masterpiece. And the final half an hour, this is total killings! Forget all that you saw, forget all that you imagined on the film: JOHN RAMBO IS BETTER THAN ALL THAT YOU SAW IN THE BANDS ANNOUNCE.

And I finish on the end: leave me to say you that you will be surprised, and very moved (I had the eyes a not very humid ones, I did not cry as for Rocky Balboa, but I were very moved)."

That's the full review posting, unedited, unchanged, and awesome in it's hilarious ineptitude. Clearly english isn't this guy's first language (I hope), but still I found it pretty damn funny all the same. Hey, it's been a slow fucking day...

eight notes

Jan 23rd, 2008

ever notice that all great movie scores can usually be distilled to seven or eight notes that define that score? Star Wars, Indy, etc. Well, the Rambo movies have eight notes too. You know the ones, the ones that happen when he steals the motorbike in First Blood. I think that's the test of great score. As to Chuck Norris fighting Rambo, in an urban environment, Chuck wins. In any type of non-developed environment, Chuck would find himself impaled on punji sticks, disemboweled or disintegrated.

Listen - you can think what you think - I do love the great and fun Stallone movies - but in AICN's history since 1996 - Stallone had just come off THE SPECIALIST, JUDGE DREDD and ASSASSINS - three crapfests. Then DAYLIGHT was ok, didn't care for THE GOOD LIFE, loved COP LAND - famously raged agains AN ALAN SMITHEE FILM: BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN - loved ANTZ, hated GET CARTER, DRIVEN, D-TOX, AVENGING ANGELO, SHADE. Enjoyed the goofy kids flick SPY KIDS 3D - then loved ROCKY BALBOA and RAMBO. I just feel Sly has finally hit his stride again - and as a fan, I'm glad - its been a long time coming.

if one thing i've learned from this site, it's that your reviews is not to be trusted. i dont doubt your integrity for a sec(always thought you say what you believe), it's just that after a lifetime of moviewatching i would expect your taste to grow alittle, but still... you gave glowing reviews again and again to mediocre pieces of trash. i can list the movies here, but why bother. moriarty may write better than you, but that only makes him condescending in defending his reviews sometimes. his taste is just as bad as yours.

i'm hoping it will be as great as harry says...if only because i want stallone to keep making more movies and thus more Q&A for me. :)

i'm just saying harry is too easily impressed, and tend to go waaaay overboard in his excitement. reading his reviews, you think every other movie is the best ever made. you got gore, monsters, pirates, and you're likely to get harry's seal of approval.

I'd love to see how adventurous your taste in cinema is. And to claim superiority over anybody else's taste is simply an act of an ass. Everyone, everywhere has the stuff they love and stuff they hate. They have what they say in public they love, then they have what they really love - Me - I tell everyone that reads this site the truth - It's not a pretension, its not meant to impress. But I see just about everything. I don't write about it all - there's too much, too much to type and share. There's a simple fact to movie watching. We are all different human beings. Some of us go to films hoping to love movies. Some of us go to find the flaws. Some of us go to impress our friends with our superior opinions. Some go because, the act of sitting in a movie theater is their artistic place of worship. Cloudrider... I don't know you. But you seem to be a bit hostile. I have no doubt that you believe absolutely in your opinion as being the end of discussion - but dude... there's a myriad of thought on stories and films. There are people that hate everything that ever gets distribution and love only the PURE world of cinematic experimentation. And those films that they love would drive a normal mainstream viewer out of their seat faster than an electric shock.

I'm passionate about film. It isn't a hobby or a passing interest. Film is my occupation, my passion and my primary love. I've seen more films than I could ever communicate. My screen is non-stop. Imagine - 11 years - 7 days a week. 12-18 hrs a day. Film. It's not a grind. It's not me going - "Aw fuck, another day." Its "Fucking A, another day!" I hope you have a similar life

It was pretty short call actually. They didnt really talk too much about Cloverfield because a few people on the show havent seen it yet. They did ask JJ if there would be a sequel and JJ said the studio has already asked him about it. They spent a lot more time on Star Trek and Lost. They talked about Shatner being pissed that he is not in Star Trek, JJ going from picketing to directing in the same day, etc. JJ also stated he really doesnt have much to do with Lost anymore. JJ is huge Stern fan and corresponds with Howard via e-mail all the time so they plan on having him back on to promote Star Trek.

I was just jokin' really. I saw Cloverfield last week, and while it wasn't the second coming of Christ movie they hyped it to be, it was a good, tight monster flick like I used to watch as a kid on late night Friday TV. Because of the way it's shot though (using only Hud's footage) you wonder what the movie would have been had it been told (and shown) in an omniscient way.

Did anybody play that game? It had one of the worst password systems of all time, and Rambo fought bubbles and giant spiders. The best part was the beginning where Col. Trautman asked if you wanted to leave jail, and you could say no. Of course he just kept asking over and over if you'd take the mission. The Sega Rambo game and Rambo III games were great, especially Rambo III on Genesis. Kudos to Stallone for trying to expose the world to what's going on in Burma. He may be doing it in the guise of an action film, but I think it'll get through to more people than a straight out drama would.

harry... you really dont need to defend yourself. why reply to mere me?:) anybody can clearly see that you're very passionate about films(me too - learned filmmaking & directed a few lousy shorts to prove it). no doubt you have watched more movies than anybody ever could in their in their lifespan. and while some TBers here accuse you of being an asskisser at times, i thought you always speak your heart out. every single time.

my beef is that some of the worst genre films got your love in this site, and thus personally i find your reviews highly unreliable. and yes, there's such a thing as superiority in taste. just ask mory - he thinks his taste towers over everyone else(at least, i got that impression of him sometimes). there are good taste and there are bad taste, otherwise there are no good and bad movies and awards are useless.

while my taste is not quite there yet, i'm at the point now where i can safely say i can recognize lousy films when i watch them. and i try to watch all kind of movies from all over the world(ones i could find in my ass end of the world anyway), some i found out only through this site, due to your passion. and yes, i can be an ass. :)

You read this site and expect Harry NOT to get excited when he likes a film? Of course his review's over the top, it's a frickin RAMBO movie, based on a character who is, by design, OVER THE TOP. Seeing an action idol like Sly's Rambo come to life again, and in a well-done fashion would get any action geek excited, let alone an all-around film-monster like Harry. Shit, go read some Entertainment Weekly high-brow poo-poo violence-makes-our-kids-misbeh ave review and get the FUCK off this site if you think for a minute you have a right to tell Harry he got too excited about a movie. Seriously, if you read this site with any regularity you'd know that Harry usually reviews movies that in some way interest him. Generally that leads to positive reviews. Sure, I like to hear Harry rip Hollywood-bloated films new assholes on occasion too. But I read his reviews cuz he's a geek like me, gets excited about film like me. No, he ain't always "right" but it's a fucking subjective review, people have different opinions. But instead of realizing this, all these dumb fucks come onto talkbacks and say "OMG Plant, he is maeking teh monies!!" whenever he likes a movie.

Harry has NEVER had a better grasp of a movie before

"When the missionaries show up, he just doesn't really want to have anything to do with them. They're the sort of people that he doesn't really know how to relate with. They care. Their hearts are filled with love for their fellow humanity. They believe in making a difference, in the basic good in the soul of mankind. Basically, they believe in everything that Rambo, through his life, has learned was a crock of shit."

You nailed the entire focal point of the movie in that paragraph, Harry - never before have I seen you be so rock solid on target. Action movies are given this bad rap of being all about loosely stringing a bunch of explosions together, culminating with the complete conflagration of an entire wharf or industrial complex, or something like that. This movie is actually a drama dressed up in explosions and blood. Its a character piece about a man who is forced to re-evaluate everything he has learned in life - and to consider for a moment that maybe all his conclusions are wrong. Thats what will make this movie resonate, and that is why Sly needs to keep making movies. So many action movies are made in what "Old Time Hollywood" used to refer to as "The Sausage Factory" where movies were scooped up from a beefy mash, crammed into skins, and belched out of a giant machine, each sausage link identical to the one that squirted out before it.

While Guys like Norris and Van Damme continue(d) to hand us movies stuffed into sausage skins, Sly is handing us a thick peppercorned porterhouse and telling us to dig right in with our bare hands.

Keep the steaks comin, Sly.

You can build muscle without roids
by TheLastCleric
Jan 24th, 2008
11:00:28 AM
It's pathetic how anybody with arms over 18 inches get labeled a roid/growth hormone user when in reality building bulk isn't that hard to do, especially for experienced bodybuilders like Sly. I really don't see him popping roids at his age and given his history and muscle memory what he has accomplished physically seems completely reasonable. He purposely bulked up for this role and focused on his shoulders, back, and other regions that give him the look of an ox. He looked better in Rocky Balboa than most men a third his age so give credit where it's due.

I respect the amount of passion you have for movies; I live for them, too. But "11 years, 7 days a week, 12-18 hours a day?" I really have to hope that's an exaggeration. Have you ever considered the concept of "moving" or maybe something really radical like "stepping outside?" Perhaps you would even make that leap we all know you're capable of and "get some fresh air." Sorry to bust your balls, but anyone who spends EVERY SINGLE MOMENT OF LIFE in front of a screen... Ahh, I should just give up. Just don't want to see your obit next. "Rambo" sounds awesome, but we really need a review where you reverse that absurd gushing love and unleash the demons on some crapfest like "Dungeon Siege." I want to read you tearing a film's asshole out with the same gusto you devote to the explosive orgasms every film seems to give you these days.

over the cynical, joyless crap that constitutes most movie reviews this day and age. Compound that with the fact that the internet really has made every person on the planet a vocal critic and it's easy to understand why people enjoy reading Harry's reviews. He may over praise but then again, why do people care? Every film, no matter how universally loved, has its detractors and in the end the only thing that matters is how you feel about what you've watched. This is Harry's site, it's his opinion, and if you guys really want to be that dismissive of the man, why come here at all? He really does take a large amount of bile from some of you and he's pretty mellow in his responses. Lighten up people.

11:23:21 AM
...he may never kick Stallone's ass at the box office, but in a real fight, he wouldn't even get a chance to say "Yo". Seagal, Van Damme...posers. Neither has competed in any recognized or known fights with any real martial artist. I do know that Seagal got choked out twice by a stunt wrangler friend of ours during filming. He was failing to pull his punches and had injured a couple of stunt people. The coordinator asked him to ease up and Seagal went ballastic and made the mistake of putting his finger in the guy's chest. He got locked up in lion killer choke and went to sleep. When he came to a few minutes later, he foolishly thought to jump in again and took another nap. They had no other issues after that. Jet Li is the real deal, but doesn't have a fight pedigree either. So, the point here is that Chuck STILL does most of his stunts and all of his martial arts and can back it up in real life. Sly and the rest are ONLY actors with good choreography. If I'm heading to the biker bar and have a need to fight my way out (which I have on occasion!), I'll take Chuck over all of the wannabes. Chuck did have a friend of ours, Chip McGinnis, do work on Walker the last 2 seasons or so as he had some injuries and nagging stuff affecting the stunt work. Chip resembles Chuck at a distance and is a Black Belt with a dojo in Oregon. He flew in, shot some scenes, and flew out several times back then. Chuck is back in good health (so far as I know...haven't talked to him in person since Sidekicks was filming in Houston, and that was eons ago. He's in town every now and then and visits some of his old students or at least calls and says hello. Great guy and absolutely still has the mojo. I know I still won't fight him, even for shits and giggles. I was trained in his system by one of his top students from the old "blood and guts" days of the 70's when Chuck was Middleweight Champion. I have fought a slew of those guys and we're pretty similar in that, when we hit something, it stays hit. I'm retired now, so I definitely don't want to take a sidekick from Chuck. I like having all my ribs intact and lungs not full of blood! So, lay off the Chuck bashing. He may not be the thespian Sly is, but he can still kick Rambo's ass in a skinny minute.

I know Harry can be over-enthused about poor films, but he's dead-on rights about RAMBO. I saw a rough cut and it was beyond the two sequels. The direction is Stallone's best and most subtle, yes, the script is weak, but when Rambo goes into action...you will believe that evil Burmese soldiers can explode in clouds of gore. Stallone is also very good and the ending is perfect. I'd like to know how the audience at the Alamo reacted...it seems like it should draw a vocal crowd.

It was Under Siege and Gene put his ass to sleep twice in about 10 minutes. Chuck had the Muchados teach HIM Gracie BJJ, which he used on Walker. They had a training/workout area in DFW on premise when WTR was in production. I used to jam with the guy that wrote the theme for the show. He was one of "our" class of old school asskickers and he wrote the song for Chuck and just gave it to him. When they went to record it, it turns out the only thing Chuck CAN'T do is sing worth a damn, so Tirk Wilder (the composer) actually doubles the vocal so it sounds like Chuck is (sorta) singing the song. After the 1st Season, Tirk got the nod in the credits.
