I can't stand Bryan Hitch's work. The photo reference is so distractingly obvious to the point where every character is staring straight at the camera with a blank look on their face. At least find reference from different angles.

man you shouild kill yourself. who cares if it's photo reference or not. it's a visual medium, it either looks nice or not. it's not about deadlines. who cares if bagley was always on time, his art sucked ass compared to his earlier work. Hitch's art blows people away, that's how you can tell a fanboy from someone with logic, how a mainstream person sees it. The first issue of ultimates would blow anyone away, they can see the detail and it is pleasant to look at, the point of art.

The point of art is to "see the detail" and be "pleasant to look at"? Thanks for defining a universal aesthetic for everyone. Also says a lot about your brain power. I personally don't give a shit about Hitch, and while I admire Bagley's work ethic, his drawings often look sketchy to me, and everyone is emaciated-- I mean, his stuff doesn't look like it takes that long to draw. Batts, way to conduct yourself with decor. Also, JJ Binks was actually pretty funny. Rock-me is way too eager to jump down people's throats. Saying that as a long time reader.

I'll respond to you, but if you ever say anything as goddamn stupid a I should kill myself because I don't agree with you about comic book artists, then consider it the last time. I like Bagley's art, with the exception of some weird faces every once in a while. But he knows his posing, action, and storytelling. I liked Hitch's first few issues of Ultimates, but detail is not the point of art. In fact I would say it is clarity. I can appreciate an incredibly detailed splash page that I can stare at for a long time, but I want an artist who knows how to move a story forward visually. Too often with Hitch's stuff you can practically see the red carpet photos he's taking his reference from, with characters with half-smiles staring straight at the camera, looking real but totally screwing up the narrative. Either way, all art is subjective and no two people see it the same way. So arguing this stuff is pretty pointless.

when you bring it down to a cosmic sense, and after hearing people talk shit about Hitch yet praise Perez, it is about what you look at. It's visual. Most of DC's comics look like ass which makes it harder to enjoy the comic. Hitch's art is that, art, you read the story and look at the pictures, that's what comics are. And they are nice pictures.

Good Art Vs Late Books
by Jinxo
Jan 23rd, 2008
03:50:53 PM
Generally speaking I'm pretty forgiving about books coming out late. You know, unless a book is getting to seem bi-annual. But with the Avengers books there is another wrinkle and that's that Marvel is trying to maintain some linkage between The New Avengers and The Mighty Avengers. For me, that changes things. Trying to link the books and having one come out late stinks. The Venom bomb might have been a big surprise and exciting IF I hadn't seen it yadda yadda'd over a month back in New Avengers. And in New Avengers it played odd because it did pop up out of nowhere and then was given short shrift. At the time I was trying to figure out what it had to do with anything since The Mighty Avengers had the Ultron thing going on with no sign of Venom craziness.

Late is fine unless you are doing a book tied to another book's continuity.

You know, with Hitch and Cassaday and even someone like Brian Bolland, I can see how they miss deadlines, because their art is so intricately detailed. But Cho? I like his pictures, but they're fairly cartoony and don't seem like they require all this extra time to make happen. Yeah, the Avengers Venom-bomb thing was so poorly timed as to negate whatever narrative energy Bendis wanted to get by melding the two Avengers titles. Point, Jinxo.

I don't mind the art at all; so far the unlined faces and shallow depth work perfectly for me. The storylines, though, are another matter. How many big reveals are we going to get before the characters become trivial and we cease to care?

no, you certainly aren't. The claim that only a 'small percentage' of readers have complained about the Angel art seemed to be the biggest crock of shit: it's the one thing that everyone talks about.

I disagree about the story, though: I think the current direction is great, and but for Urru's lousy artwork, I think Lynch's stuff is of a piece with the writing in season 5 (which is possibly the highest compliment I can pay).

Lateness
by stones_throw
Jan 23rd, 2008
04:58:16 PM
The only reason comic book artists and publishers can be consistently late without any repercussions is because the fanbase is small and dedicated enough that the books being late doesn't make any significant difference. So if you don't like late books from Marvel or DC just don't buy 'em. Or broaden the audience of traditional comic books so that they'll be forced to become more professional.

...Or do all of these comics sound that a complete waste of time and money? Not one of them piqued my interest in the least, except for the retrospective of Dan DeCarlo's pin-up art. :(

Just more of the same old lame storylines, sold at high prices. At least when they only cost 50 cents, I could enjoy it as mindless entertainment. But at $3.00+ a pop, these comic companies HAVE to do better than this lazy, unimaginative crap they pump out month after month.

Weird because for awhile I've been used to their just being oodles of titles coming out each week. This is two weeks straight of not much coming out. I mean, setting aside Iron Fist and such. Just seems like overall just fewer big titles have been hitting the stands two weeks straight. Then again maybe I'm just so used to having a bloated pull due to big event tie-in issues and such that it just seems less is hitting each week now.

I know what you mean. I'm interested to see some of the art that's being put out there nowadays but I have no desire to catch myself up on the hastily retconned Sisyphean soap operas that most of these characters have been made to endure for decades. Thankfully, there are 50+ years of affordable back-issues and reprints of oldies-but-goodies for me to work back through and hit the high points that I missed (mostly due to not yet being born) the first time.

I am firmly on the side that the artist should take their time and do the best job. Alan Moore's recent interview said that it might be great and help sales to be "on time" but in five years the work is gone and forgotten. Might as well take the time to do it right and make something great. I can see what people mean about the staring eyes of Hitch, but the books overall do look great. On the other hand, Bagely had a smooth comfortable style that always came out on time with USM, so I certainly appreciate his work ethic. While each issue may not be some grand work of art, the run as a whole stands as a great work in my opinion.

Any Artist Who Receives $ Has A Deadline...
by Buzz Maverik
Jan 24th, 2008
11:20:32 AM
The only artist who don't are the ones who are still struggling, who haven't sold anything or had a showing or commission.

If you're thinking of the paint splatter guy in the loft howling because his feelings can't be rushed, yer thinking of the movies. Like they say on AICN, Artistic Soul's Gotta Eat.

You like movies? Very few spec scripts get made, so the screenwriter has a deadline and if he or she doesn't make it, the producer can get 100,000 people to step up and take the job (including many of us right here). The director, even if its' Scorsese, has some sort of deadline.

What about the late Stanley Kubrick, Mr. Maverik?

Buzz lights a smoke. "Glad you asked that, Timmy. Even Stanley Kubrick. Sure, he went way over schedule, but he was Stanley Kubrick, not some guy drawing Ultimate Man Thing, however talented that artist is. And his vision was compromised for it. If Mr. Kubrick would have wanted to cast Sydney Pollack and some vaguely European actress, he wouldn't have originally filmed their parts with Harvey Keitel and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Also, actor's careers were damaged. Anthony Michael Hall is doing okay with THE DEAD ZONE series and all, but his career (and Matthew Modines) may have taken different courses if he'd played Sgt. Joker in FULL METAL JACKET, etc.

Certainly, novelists have deadlines. There's marketing and competition to consider.

Musicians have to think of their own careers. I think we're waiting more for democracy in China instead of CHINESE DEMOCRACY.

So comic book boy isn't painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (Michelangelo had deadline!) or sculpting Mt. Rushmore (deadline-- if nothing else, the guy wanted to finish before he died, right?). He's pro. So he should quit surfing the net and playing video games and start drawing. And we need to quit making excuses for these guys.

But it's not only the artist missing the deadline. The publisher is screwing up by not bringing in another artist to get their books out. Comic publishers have accepted a far more limited market (i.e. addicts who HAVE to buy comics) than they did in the past. And we accept the limitations and enable them to happen.

It's actually Stan Lee's fault. He created personality in comic publishing (sorta based on Bill Gaine's EC pages, but...). Now, we think Hitch is our buddy. And the artists still think, "Well, Liefield got away with it..." even though everyone is going to distance themselves from RL in every other possible way...
