I'm loving these questions, and it's nice to have a positive thing on the site after so tragic a day for all of us. Sad to see there's only one day of questions left, but that just means we're closer to Rambo, so there's a bright side. Hope the last 10 questions are extra good!

Sly, seriously... thank you so much for doing this. You're a real class act, man. While I LOVED what you did with "Rocky Balboa" (and am anticipating "Rambo" with pure excitment) I'd love to see you in more roles like "Copland". You were AMAZING in that film. Your performance stands the test of time. My friends and I still talk about how that's one of the most underrated performances of all time. The word "underrated" being the key there. It was so violently subtle. Please do more parts like that! We love you, Sly!

Surely, the director must be better than Sly's opinion of him. It seems Sly does not like Nighthawks. There is actually some interesting trivia on IMDB on this. Wonder what Sly thinks of The Deathrace remake? Not sure if anyone's asked him that yet. I'd love an honest opinion from an old star of a film thats recently been remade. Usually they always go on TV and talk about how the remake is a really great idea. Also Escape to Victory is class I want Someone to ask him about that. Is hilarious because the director says the exact same thing, blaming Stallone for the movie not being like the comic book. Who to believe? I have a question Sly, did you really get kicked out of a hotel for taking a dump in the bathtub? Eat your humble pie and enjoy it, 15 years Stallone would've answered every single one of these questions with a "DON'T LOOK AT ME IN THE EYES!!!".

Mr. Stallone, you should definitely pursue this with all haste. That series of books (by Nelson DeMille) is awesome and could be strung into an incredible new franchise. I've often wondered why more of DeMille's books have not been adapted into film, as the main character is just begging to be seen onscreen. So, yeah, one vote for The Lion's Game. And the rest of you should read it. Good Shit.

Q for Sly: Can you direct Sly biopic by Sly?
by geodesigns
Jan 23rd, 2008
10:35:39 AM
Sly, I'm a big fan and watched all the Rocky & Rambo movies. One of my favorite all time movies is Rocky Balboa. It has so much heart.

I watched many other Sly movies and you seem to have a mixed track record, some good single story movies that I really liked (Victory!!!, Cliffhanger) , some with very funny Sly Humor moments, and other not well received. With this many movies and a fascinating life and career--

Here is my Question for Sly:

Would you consider directing & producing a biopic about your life? "Sly by Sly", narrated by Sly, acted at times by a Sly Clone, other times use the Real Sly when talking in Sly Retrospect and drag the Sly Clone around the talk show cirquit to promote the movie and see the poor kid sweat(ha ha). A biopic not in a narcissistic kind of way, but the way people write a book about their memoirs.

And by the way, I know I speak for so many of the Talkbakers, thank you for doing your AICN Q&A. You are a favorite movie star, action hero, and, demonstrated through honestly sharing your experiences with us, that you are a really likable person.

Also- I think many here crack up reading your responses, written with your sense of Sly Humor- (use stick fighting anecdote for Sly Biopic) you need to infuse more of that in your movies!!

SLY!!!! Waiting for Rocky 6-pack!- Add updated videogame!

SLY!!!! Make Rambo the 1st of a new trilogy to get another 6 pack! kick tyrannical ass around the world!! Add updated videogame! Add Rambo comic books!!!

Best Regards,

geodesigns
Is it just me...
by vadakinX
Jan 23rd, 2008
10:44:24 AM
Or does this seem almost a little...I dunno, cold?

What I mean is, the last time around, with the Rocky questions, Stallone didn't just answer questions, he looked through the talkbacks and would respond to things from the talkback during each round of questions. This time around he just seems to be answering the questions sent, sometimes not even answering the actual question but instead trying to come up with an anecdote, which while cool, leaves the asker of the question still waiting for an answer.

Don't get me wrong, it's cool to have Stallone doing this, but he seems less personal and appoachable than last time.

Thank you Mr Stallone...

Jan 23rd, 2008
10:46:40 AM
Damn, I'm just feeling chatty today. I never post. Uh, yeah, the point. If one were to adapt The Lion's Game to film, one must be very careful to handle the ending properly. While the ending of the book pissed off almost everyone I know who read it, it was a pretty solid and honest ending, especially considering the current unfound Bin Ladin situation. While most movie goer cry out for bid bang up hollywood ending, I think I would probably expect more from the guy who gave us Rocky. The handling of the ending could change an interesting political/action film into something far more. Just a thought.
AHA! Mr Stallone is a student of Stanislavski!!
by ArcadianDS
Jan 23rd, 2008
11:12:01 AM
Some of his answers contain certain Stanislavski 'jingoisms' - looks like Mr Stallone has taken a few acting classes at some point, which is respectable. Too many hollywood ation stars think they just need to have beefy arms and a .50 cal machine gun and they have a solid movie. Credit to Mr. Stallone for realizing that you do actually need to know how to act - even in an action movie.

I guess thats why we're seeing another Rambo movie and not another "Howie Long Fights Fires" sequel.

12:25:18 PM
Judge Dredd was a visually great film. It was ruined by Rob Schneider and the lack of anarchy that the comic featured. Dredd should have been a hard R rated film (ala Robocop). Instead it was Dredd "light". Plus Stallone almost never had the face shield down.... BIG MISTAKE.
As an individual piece I'd say it's a toss-up

between The Mechanic or Death Wish as far as his best work. Ensemble pick without a doubt is The Dirty Dozen followed by The Magnificent Seven in a very close second. If you're going to re-make The Mechanic I can see Bale as the Jan Michael Vincent apprentice character. He's young enough, has the looks, and the temperment. I haven't been following the talkback that much so I don't know if Sly has the Bronson role, but I'd rather see another actor (sorry Sly). He's done it already in Assassins and The Specialist.
Masked Avenger...Danny Cannon blames Stallone...
by Quake II
Jan 23rd, 2008
12:32:21 PM
You're right about that. He said that Stallone didn't want to wear the helmet, wanted more dialogue and wanted to keep it audience/summer blockbuster friendly (aka dumbed down). So who do you believe? I side with Cannon. A young director with no clout is not going to tell Stallone what to do. A veteran mega-action star with tons of clout? I think we know who made the decisions on that set. Play the victim all you want Sly. Cannon was British and said as a kid, he was the biggest Judge Dredd fan out there...Sly is cool but we know how Hollywood egos are.

It's just that in Death Wish the Bronson
by Grammaton Cleric Binks
Jan 23rd, 2008

character went from average Joe, to cold-blooded killed very slowly. First time he killed someone, or was it even a kill after he smacked the dude in the face with the sock of quarters I forget, he went home, and puked his guts out over what he had just done. At that point in Bronson's career he was a tough guy actor, but not a supreme bad ass. Stallone on the other hand is. So, I have trouble seeing the metamorphasis in my head from average guy to cold-blooded revenge seeker. Plus even though this would be a re-make, you're re-making a classic. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part re-makes don't work unless the originally really sucked, and re-making classics is risky at best. You have everything to lose, and not much to gain. I love Sly, but I don't know if this can be pulled off by anyone. Mechanic re-make is much more doable. Also I heard Dredd was delayed for years because when Robocop came out the people who were making Dredd, and I'm not sure if they were the ones who ended up making Sly's Dredd, saw it and realized that Robocop was great, and it basically was Judge Dredd.

it could work then. I'm not sure if you're calling Rocky or Rambo re-makes. Those are just continuations with the same actor. But now that I know more about Death Wish I'm holding out hope for it. Here's a trivia question: What was Jeff Goldbum's first acting role on film? He played "Freak number 1"; one of the guys who broke into the apartment and murdered/raped Bronson's family.

I realize its a sad day for movie fans for obvious reasons but if you go over to the story about Anikin or somthing on the main page, check out the original artical where Harry tells you to. You read a talkback about the casting for that character. Its from back in 2000. some funny shit. and people have added comments at the end from today wich is a little weird...........or yeah er Rambo looks rather good I might add.

What lacks now is a kickass popcorn PRISON MOVIE!

Kind of like the middle part of Face/Off in terms of popcorn-ness, but without the futuristic stuff. Just a kickass, "realistic" (in terms of aesthetic and the components of today's prisons)movie about a guy or group grinding it out in the pen. Sly would be perfect for this.
If his upcoming remake involves a ex-con, I hope there is a prison scene.

How about a Chinese prison movie?

You know how American prisons are so loud with everyone screaming and fighting? I heard in Chinese prisons....its chillingly quiet, like a library. Everythings in super order and all the convicts are boy scouts. Lets do a movie on what goes on in there.
American prisons need to get tougher...
Fantastic Faraci review of Rambo over at Chud...

Sounds like Sly's really delivered the goods and made a terrific addition to the John-J cannon. |Faraci's one our own, and his impression of Rambo sounds like it has more in keeping with the grit and edge of First Blood (which is the way I was hopng it would go) with just the right balance of characterisation and human interest offset against what sounds like absolute bloody carnage. Was excited to hear that the Merc team nare not being mere cypher-cannon fodder, and they hold there own with John-J and his 50 cal in a full tilt 'Men on a Mission' third act. Can't wait to see this for some full on no nonsense Guts 'n Glory entertainment. GO SLY! ;-)

Sly needs to look at Eastwood...
by Sledge Hammer

...and recognise the way that Eastwood matured his onscreen image in the late seventies and through the eighties. He still did the action and franchise films, but he peppered that with smaller, more personal films, and interesting takes of familiar Eastwood archetypes. And then of course he would go on to beutifully cap those types of action roles with his work in Unforgiven and, to a slightly lesser extent, In The Line Of Fire.

That's what Stallone needs to do in my opinion, realise that he's not a young turk action hero anymore and look for films that allow him to work his age and experience and filmic history into his characters. I mean it's no coincidence that the likes of Eastwood and Lee Marvin did some of their most interesting work later in life, Stallone should take a note of that and do likewise. If he did then I think there's still a lot of interesting filmic life in the guy yet.

And I actually think that Rocky and now Rambo will hopefully mark not only a return to quality for Stallone, but a turning point for the guy. He's always been a better actor than he's usually credited with being, largely because he's so easy to caricature - just as Eastwood was earlier in his career, as were the likes of John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart - so it'd be nice to see him bring some more memorable characters to the screen now he's at this stage of his life, where the ego seems to have melted away, and the craft is well and truly under his belt.

As much as I'm no fan of the remake phenomenon, Death Wish actually has quite an interesting hook, the cold hard killer that has reformed, only to be driven back to unleashing the animal that was always lurking just below the surface, so if he can make that work then I think there's definitely potential there, and I say this as someone who loves Bronson's Death Wish (though Red Sun is still my fave Bronson as star film). This is the way to make a worthy remake in my books, take the core basic concept, but then go in your own distinct direction with it, and if you look at the great remakes of our time, The Thing, The Fly, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, et al, then you see that's exactly what each of those films did. They didn't recreate the original films, they took the concept and then ran in their own direction with it, and that's the way to go in my books.

As for The Mechanic, again, one of Bronson's very best, but I wouldn't be totally against a Stallone led remake, just so long as he keeps it gritty and doesn't turn it into Assassins 2. I mean I like Assassins well enough, but it was very much a popcorn flick, The Mechanic should be more a gritty and dark character piece.

Anyway it's great to see Rambo getting such positive buzz, gonna be another month until it opens down here unfortunately...damn, gonna be a long friggin wait. Worth it though I hope.

i never understand the critics' adulation over eastwood. i've seen 'unforgiven', and i failed to see its greatness. so it's about a killer who want to make peace with the world, unless, of course, he's forced to kill again. where have i seen that? only in every fricking hongkong and lone hitman movies! big fricking deal.

and no matter how many praises have gone towards 'mystic river' and 'letters from iwo jima', i think they're DULL DULL DULL, visually and naratively. in fact, i think his 'direction' is one of the most pedestrian and boring of all the big name directors working today.

before you all say i should stick to michael bay, let me assure you that i love kurosawa, fellini, truffaut(hated godard though!), wong kar wai, etc. and having loved these guys' films, i can say without pretension i absolutely loath eastwood's films.
