He was pronounced dead at 3:26 p.m. in his downtown Manhattan residence by his housekeeper, who discovered him in cardiac arrest and called 911, an NYPD spokesperson says. He was apparently scheduled to have a massage in his apartment this afternoon. Sources tell CBS 2's Scott Weinberger the death may be drug-related and that there were pills scattered around the room. Ledger had recently separated from his wife, actress Michelle Williams. The couple have one daughter, Matilda. This is sad, I hope they didn't have a big fight and he killed himself over her . Heath was in the midst of filming "The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus." Poor Terry G can't get a break

Im sad he is gone on a human level of course, but to be truthful im more pissed at the possible derailment of the new Batman franchise.
And of course the Gilliam film.

But this is not some great mystery, the guy was a brooding unhappy dude.
He was in that Kurt Cobain mode of never being happy or comfortable with your own skin/success.

something I think all obits here should start incorporating is a nice list of 'watch this and watch that' for people who sadly cannot claim to know the recently departed all that well.

I cant even name the film, but I caught a showing on Showtime one saturday of an Aussie film where he played opposite a young girlfriend who got wrapped up in drugs and dismay after a promising start. Despite its hauntingly prophetic nature, it was a very genuine performance by Heath; and showed some acting chops Id yet to see in any of his American works. If anyone knows the film, it should be mentioned in this thread so people can seek it out.

Talk about an actor who never 'peaked'. He always chose the most interesting roles, and The Joker probably wouldn't have even been the most interesting. I can only imagine the roles he would have picked up with his new found clout. Damn fucking shame really. I don't mean to disparage any of the other deaths posted on AICN, but it is rare that an actor in such great form and on the rise just dies like this, River Phoenix doens't come close. So much wasted potential - if this was drug related - and such a shame overall.

A tragedy, and I feel loss similar to what Harry described... However if it was an accidental O.D. then it only goes so far to something more akin to "You'll be missed, dummy. You seemed smarter than that". However, if he punched his own ticket then, well, I am angry at Ledger.

He seemed like someone who had it all together (cliche',i know) as opposed to the obvious people on the fast track like Brittney Spears. I really enjoyed his work so far and I'm just dumbfounded. I pray for his family, especially the little one he just left behind. May that little girl and the rest of his family have peace in there lives soon.

His performance in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is one of the most emotionally nuanced I've even seen. When he was cast as the Joker in TDK, I knew we were going to be in for something good. not a single person in this thread has typed the phrase "he had it coming" so go put your soap box away. Oh and just so you know; as a general rule, all pills are legal when prescribed by a legitimate physician - so when someone is found dead amid a scattering of pills, you can't really start making determinations about whether they are 'illegal' pills or not. The illegality is determined by the user - the application.

I'll grant you this: it is possible that he suffered some form of seizure while taking legal doses of medication, thus pills being strewn around him. Its also possible he took one, swallowed wrong, and simply choked on it. For these possibilities, he deserves a moratorium on our judgement.

But I'm going on record that this will be declared an overdose, and that we'll find some unscrupulous money-grabbing pill salesmen calling himself a 'doctor to the stars' at the bottom of this whole sad affair.

A KNIGHT'S TALE. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU. THE DARK KNIGHT. Three I've seen, one I couldn't wait to see - until tonight.

This seems inconceivable. Heath really WAS on top of his game - and about ot explode with the role as The Joker. The world was at his feet. He had one hell of a body of work behind him. And, most importantly, a family - whether they were together or not, he and Michelle still had a daughter.

RIP Heath - whatever troubled you in this life, may you rest in peace. All our condolences (my fiancee and I) to his family and friends. An ascendant, spectacular talent is gone from us, and I can't fucking believe it.

Watching THE DARK KNIGHT will feel like nothing so much as watching THE CROW. One with so much to live for, with so much yet to do, gone far too soon.

Last year, I spent several days writing journal entries for the Joker on a certain web page that had "Mr. Sand Man" playing in the background. I stopped and took down the page after I found myself becoming too engrossed in the Joker persona. It was psychologically unhealthy.

That having been said, it is widely known that Ledger locked himself in a hotel for months, trying to summon that same persona.

If I began to grow disturbed after a few days, I can only imagine how disturbed he eventually became during his so-called psychological "training," Actually, I guess I do know... now. R.I.P., Ledger. You are the only real person that the Joker killed.

Ledger was definitely becoming a great actor and he had a mixed and varied body of work behind him. This is one of the first times I feel really sad about a dead celebrity/actor and I feel that the world has lost an interesting and heck, even sometimes electrifying, talent. Monster's Ball was the moment it started happening, and I hope that we can still watch a riveting performance from him in The Dark Knight that will do him justice. I don't care if its finished or not, that's not important. What sucks is the father of a young family losing his life.

If anyone's more bothered about the film, then you need to hide from your reflection for a few weeks.

ROAR! Was awesome! Ledger is in Vahalla now.

I'm not trying to be an ass but really,Right now as i'm typing i'm watching them lurk outside his home and his friends and family homes trying to push past police to be the first one's to photograph his body being placed in a bag. It is difficult for me to describe in words how fucked up and sad this is. What terrible fucking news. This guy had insane talent and there's no question why he was picked for the Joker. I was just laying in my bed and I heard the news on the radio. I guess this means Joker will not return for a sequel with Christopher Nolan. I wonder if they will use CGI to kill the Joker off in Dark Knight and then dedicate the film to him before the credits roll or before the movie even starts. Or maybe they will get an actor to replace Ledger as the Joker for Nolan's next Batman sequel? I dunno.

I'm happy you live such sheltered, perfect little lives. It's wonderful to know that there are people out there without a care in the world or a weight on their shoulders. Hooray for you cunts!!

I've knows several people who've died from drug overdoses; none of them would fit the typical drug addict sterotype you'd see on TV shows and movies and the one that some of you ignorant shitheads have in your brains. Rather they were intelligent, well off people who SHOULD have been happy but weren't. None of these people actually meant to kill themselves but when you can only find relief, albeit temporary, in some drug induced nirvana you'll take it; it beats the shit out of the alternative.

But that's beside the point since no one knows what kind of drugs Heath OD'd on but some of you are still out to rob the man of any shred of dignity he had by saying the tired and ignorant adage "he had it coming". From what I've read Heath has had alot of heartache recently and he's never been stable. Great people usually aren't. He's more than likely gone too far on a bottle of Prozak or some other drug that an overpaid shrink has dished out.

God bless you Heath, I only hope that there's something beyond this life and you find some happyness. You'll be missed.

Ledger seemed like a talented actor with a career on the rise. Even if you argue he did it to himself, it's still terrible it happened. Will this turn him into some legendary person? I wonder.

Not to go right into The Joker comments, but this IS AICN, after all. Aside from the "is it finished yet" question, I'm wondering what his fate at movie's end will be. This films may be letting villains stick around, but what if they've filmed it with the Joker dying at the end? That could end up affecting the film's release and everything. In any case, the film will be tainted somehow.

But wow, this sucks.

To hell with him.

Yea, I said it. Suicide is one of the most selfish self-absorbed things a person can do.

Nobody dies in a "social vacuum" either. His wife/gf/whatever and his child are going to pay the price for this for a very long time. Insurance? Survivor benefits? Nope. Not for a suicide. Just pray that he didn't squander his earnings like a lot of celebs seem to do.

Heath Ledger. Looked like he was on his way to being really great. Turned out he was just another selfish prick.
